Also, I believe Amazon announced a few months ago they were going to
discontinue this feature at the end of 2018. No more being able to upload
your own music into Amazon storage for playback through Amazon Music. I
suppose the only way to get that music back as playable through Amazon
Music is to either upgrade to their subscription service, and/or, purchase
the music if not available via subscription. I'm not happy with this.

Windows Defender for anti-virus. Free version of MalwareBytes for
anti-malware.

Defender is already built into your Windows 10 and probably good enough for
your purposes. It's less annoying than free AV out nowadays, which is always
full of ads and hardly ever great from an accessibility standpoint. And it
does detect a lot of stuff. Arguably, too much. But you can exclude areas of
your drive if you are getting false positives.

[JAWS-Users] Magic 14

2018-02-09 Thread Miriam Vieni
Someone on this list answered a previous Magic question so I have another
one. I'm using Magic at 22X and I have light letters on a dark background.
Win 7 64 bit computer Jaws 18 IE 11. So, I turned off the magnification with
the cap loc key and delete so that a sighted person could see what was on
the screen. When I used these toggle keys to turn the magnification back on,
Jaws said, "Magnification enhanced" and the colors changed to the ones that
are set, the light letters on the dark background. But the magnification
wasn't on. I had to reboot the computer to get the magnification back. Has
anyone else encountered this? Is there an easier fix than turning the
computer off and on again?

Hey there, Dennis be mighty careful as eset has made claims that they're

totally accessible version of eset that was fully accessible was version 8.
I can't speak for their current version but when I tried version9 which was
claimed to be accessible it just totally wasn't accessible. I was never
able to change any settings. I brought this to eset's attention and opened

I've been following advice from various sources and using Windows Defender,
with the free edition of Malware Bytes installed to perform occasional
scans. I also keep the operating system and applications up to date. Running
out of date software is a very effective way to become vulnerable to
malware.

So far, neither tool has detected anything. I don't know whether that's
because I've managed to avoid malware, or because the malware is avoiding
detection. I hope it's the former.

Miriam,

When you perform the transfer to your SD card, do you transfer the entire
folder or just the files inside the folder? I'm wondering if the program
you're using to transfer the files is removing them once they are
transferred. If you're specifying the folder to transfer, it may be removing
it once it's been transferred. Just a thought.

What a hell of a problem. If you went to your documents folder and
then pressed the ctrl spacebar to insure that no folder had the focus.
And then pressed the application key and arrowed up to, new and
pressed enter. And you pressed return on folder. Then if you typed the
name of the folder and you got a new folder with that name. Then you
placed an item in that folder and you found that it was there but
when you went back later the folder was gone. Well then I think that you

might have a poltergeist in your new home.

Windows Defender for anti-virus. Free version of MalwareBytes for
anti-malware.

Defender is already built into your Windows 10 and probably good enough
for
your purposes. It's less annoying than free AV out nowadays, which is
always

full of ads and hardly ever great from an accessibility standpoint. And it
does detect a lot of stuff. Arguably, too much. But you can exclude areas

The late Jim Kitchen developed a series of free, self-voicing completely

Perhaps you can do a search for Destenno games. They were originally written
for DOS but were ported to Windows. The suite includes a great blackjack
game as well as craps, a slot machine, and a few other games.

Vicky, If you have the laptop keyboard configuration set up on your
computer, you should be able to tap quickly on the cap lock key and hear
either cap lock on, or cap lock off. When cap lock is on you will type in
all caps. With the cap lock off you will use the shift key to type an
uppercase letter. You probably already know that. But here's the thing, if
it is not working that way for you, then, it is time to call FS.

I was just looking for the key itself, which is the caps lock and how to
turn it off when I need to use the shift key.

For some reason, tapping it twice quickly has no effect. If I change the
JAWS key to another key, my caps lock key works fine, so I know it's not an
issue with the physical key on the keyboard.

I'm just wondering if there is something else I need to adjust to get it to
function correctly when tapping twice to use as a caps lock key.

Re: [JAWS-Users] My wayward Books Folder

2018-02-09 Thread Miriam Vieni
Thanks. But the point of having the books folder is to use the companion
software. Otherwise, I can just unzip the book in downloads, where it
arrives and transfer it. The reason for using the companion software is that
one can unzip and transfer several books at one time and it's somewhat
easier than unzipping the book with windows.

Why don't you try this. Create a new folder and name it. Put the zip folder
which contains the book you want into that folder. Now make sure that the
zip folder has focus. Press the application key and arrow up until you find,
extract all. Press return on that. The book zipped file will be opened, and
all of the files will be extracted to a file of the same name. You will then
have two files of the same name in the folder. One will be the original
zipped file.. The other will be your book with all of the necessary files in
it. Copy and paste this file to your card or device. You will then have
your book on the card or device, and the folder you used will still be
there with both files in it, one the zipped file the other the extracted
file of the same name. You can delete one of them if you wish. But anyhow, I
am confident if you unzip a book this way, and then copy the book file to
your card or device, the new folder you created will be there when you go
back and will not disappear.

Jeff,

The Humanware Companion software always works the same way. It finds the zip
folder that contains the files for the book in my books folder. It unzips
the zip folder, puts all the files in a folder, and then transfers this
folder onto the SD card for the VR Stream or the cartridge for the NLS
player. There's never been a problem, ever since Humanware developed this
piece of software. It works with zip folders from NLS and Bookshare. The
software is set to find the zip folders in my books folder which I've always
had, ever since I began downloading books in 2007.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS & Microsoft Silverlight Updates

2018-02-09 Thread Mike B.
Hi Fernando,

I've never had a need for Silverlight, & it has never been installed on this
computer, but I only started receiving updates after reinstalling MSSE. I
made sure that Silverlight wasn't installed by searching the registry, IE, &
Firefox, but then after looking in Windows updates / change settings, I
noticed this checkbox was added with the MSSE reinstall, & was checked /
turned on,

Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft
software when I update

I'm pretty certain this option is the reason for the Silverlight updates,
but I don't want to turn this off because then I won't get updates for other
MS products I have installed. So, hiding the silverlight updates is what
I'll do! LOL
Thanks much.

Hi Mike,

I don't know whiy you may want to prevent Silverlight from updating or ever
installing.
However, if Silverlight updates are continually unhiden, be aware that it is
actually an add-on for IE. Try opening IE, going to Tools and then Manage
Add-ons. In this dialog, find the Microsoft Silverlight plugin and disable
it.
Do similar steps in other browsers for which Silverlight plugins are
installed, such as Mozilla Firefox.

Hope it helps!

I Found a way to disable the popup asking what I have plugged in, you can go in

It seems to remember your last setting just fine.
Regarding the sound card dropouts when connected to the doc, not yet found a

Hi friends,

I Have just purchased a new laptop which has Realtek audio set up on it.
When you plug in speakers, it keeps coming up with a popup asking which device
you plugged in.
I Can use the JAWS touch cursor to move around this screen and there is a

but for some reason, when the touch cursor is on, I try to use the JAWS left

I tried pressing enter and return as well.
Has anyone come across any similar issues and found a way around?
The application for the Realtek Waves seems to be very poorly written
accessability wise.
I Have tried searching for the jack selection option in other ways e.g. in
control panel, sound and under the advanced and properties tabs to no effect.
Even tried searching the web for a registry entry but I have had no luck.
I Am also having issues with the Dell DW15 dock, when you plug in speakers to
this, it will work for a while and then the sound card will drop out.
I Have updated the system bios, device drivers and firmware etc and the same
thing still happens.

Any thought from anyone else with a similar setup would be very much
appreciated!

Hi all, I am running windows 10, Jaws 2018 on an Acer laptop. I went to show
something I was working on to my mum the other day, but she couldn't see
anything on the screen. My brother had a look at it tonight while I was out and

issue. When mum told me this I remembered the Jaws screen shade. I don't recall
turning it on and I have no idea how to find out if it is on or not. I have
spent some time in the different menu options tonight but can't find any
reference to it. Could someone please tell me how this is turned on and off so
I can see if this is the problem.

I am thinking more and more this could be the problem since this is a brand-new

have to contact Acer helpdesk and see what they suggest.

Thanks for any help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] My wayward Books Folder

2018-02-09 Thread LeDon

When you perform the transfer to your SD card, do you transfer the entire
folder or just the files inside the folder? I'm wondering if the program
you're using to transfer the files is removing them once they are
transferred. If you're specifying the folder to transfer, it may be removing
it once it's been transferred. Just a thought.

Can you press cap lock twice quickly and hear either cap lock on or cap lock
off? If so, then it is working correctly. If this doesn't work for you call
FS. Because if that doesn't work for you after all of the people on this
list who have tried to help you with this, they can not help you solve your

Re: [JAWS-Users] Turning on and off the screen shade

2018-02-09 Thread Shai
Hello,
The most effective means I have found for confirming whether the
screen shade is on or off is to go into the quick settings menu with
an insert plus v or capslock plus v if you are using the laptop layout
and in the search field type shade. Next, down arrow once and JAWS
should state whether it is checked or not if it is pressing the space
bar on it to uncheck it and then tabbing to the ok button should
disable it.
Hope this helps

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 17 reading blank in Word and excel files!

Hi All,

Just loaded JAWS 17 onto a new windows 10 computer. Now when I load up MS
Word 16 documents or an Excel file JAWS is saying blank even though there is
text contained within the Word document or numerical data in the Excel
documents. I am not sure if this is a compatibility issue or not. JAWS 17
will read the title bar and other extraneous material of the documents
window but will not read the general text typed up inside the document or
spreadsheets themselves. I have also downloaded a current JAWS 2018 and ran
it in demo mode but still the same result.
Just wondered if anyone else had an issue like this.

Many thanks for feedback.

Paul.

The late Jim Kitchen developed a series of free, self-voicing completely
accessible games for the blind that includes a suite of casino games like
Blackjack, Slot Machine, Craps, Roulette and Draw Poker. You can download
the entire suite of games here:

Perhaps you can do a search for Destenno games. They were originally written
for DOS but were ported to Windows. The suite includes a great blackjack
game as well as craps, a slot machine, and a few other games.

Anyone know of any, I did find blackjack once but never saved it to a
memory stick.
I found Klondike solitaire which is very accessible from spoonsville but
this person doesn’t program gambling type games.
It would be nice to find such games that I don’t have to play online!

2018-02-09 Thread Adrian Spratt
Wayne,

I assume that new versions of JAWS keep up with developments on the Web that
don't help sell a software product. That said, JAWS 2018 doesn't work with
certain messages in Outlook 2010 and fails to keep its place on certain (though
not all) Webpages. I've brought these two problems to the attention of VFO by
email, but they insist I call to seek solutions, even though others have
reported similar experiences on this list. I don't want to spend the time nor
risk getting one of VFO's less skilled tech service people, all for what I
believe would be a fool's errand.

You seem to be asking if it's worth keeping up with the biennial SMA. If you
can afford it, the answer is surely yes. Whether for 2018 or some other future
version, VFO's pricing system makes SMA's cheaper than buying JAWS all over
again. Also, although I've never come across VFO claims of security, it could
be another reason to keep up to date, as it is for all software.

Adrian, I see that you are using Windows 7 64bit as I am. Is there any reason
to use JAWS 2018? I still use JAWS 17.

Fernando,

Using your driver update example, I tried a couple of ideas on my system,
including seeing if the mouseover command would work. It didn't. However, the
words you indicate are missing from the control appear when I switch to the
JAWS cursor.

I'm using a 64-bit Windows 7 machine and right now the last release of JAWS 18.
I haven't tested this with 2018.

Hi Mike,

I have access keys speaking set to All and Tutor Messages to Custom Messages
Only. However, I tried the Menus and Controls options but the issue is not
fixed.
It is expected that this setting doesn't fix this issue. This is because tutor
messages handles speaking of hints given by JAWS on how to operate the focused
control type with the keyboard; for example, when you are on a button and have
Tutor Messages to Menus and Controls, JAWS will say using the Tutor Message
voice: “To activate press space bar.”
These are JAWS-specific messages. Control descriptions are small help texts,
often just under the control name, which gives information on what a specific
control does and it's displayed on the screen. For example, when you are in the
Driver Update wizard for a device in Device Manager, the Search Driver Software
on your Computer button have a description telling “Search and install the
driver software manually,” and the button for check automatically tells
something longer about the searching on the computer and Windows Update unless
you disabled this in the device installation settings.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Fernando,

In Jaws quick settings, Options / Basics try these 2 settings if you haven't
already. I know I asked this earlier, but I don't know which settings you
tried. Using the settings below produced extra Jaws verbiage, but I just don't
recall exactly what the control description is supposed to say.

Access Key Speak all radio button checked

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for replying.
Yes, I checked both Quick Settings and the Settings Center for the active
verbosity level. In the active level, which is Beginner, I have checked the
Control Descriptions item, and changing between long or short messages produce
the same result on this problem.
Regarding Speech and Sounds Manager, I only changed the Classic scheme to make
different heading levels to play piano sounds. Even so, I tried reverting to
