One other aspect of peel ply is that it helps to save over all weight as you
pull it off it removes some of the excess epoxy that you would not other wise
get just by squeege process.

  Mike Turner
  Jackson, Missouri

  Dubi
You are correct on all counts. Other hints are: A-Using peel ply will leave
a smoother finish with less sanding later on. B-If you are using urethane
foam, wipe down the cured glass with a lightly dampened (with denatured
alcohol) cloth to remove the waxy residue that epoxy generates in the
curing process. This will make sanding easier and faster. Omit this if you
are using styrene foams. Alcohol will attack/melt the foam if not totally
protected. Not all foams require slurry. Some urethanes are dense enough to
simply apply wet epoxy to, then lay your cloth on and stiple and squeegee
  off the excess. Good luck.

I had a conversation with Ken Boyer today who is very good when it comes to the
manufacture of aircraft parts. Mostly non-structural items such as wheel pants,
engine cowlings, turtle decks, front decks ect... He has spent years working
for Sabre-Liner on a number of their fiber glassing projects. Anyone needing
wheel pants or other parts might give him a call @ 573-543-5538. He doesn't
have an E-mail right now but I have found his work to be excellent and very
reasonable prices. This might save some of us a lot of time in getting our
projects finished up and in the air a lot sooner.
YHaa Ken has plans to be at the gathering
so you might want to seek him out.

KR> Air Supply

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner
Dan, I like the locations for fresh air/heat and carb air but I have a concern
about the cooling of the bottom of the engine which. I think your set up will
cool the bottom of the engine quite well but by ramming air under the engine
you may be pressuring the bottom and restricting the flow of cooling air from
the top of the engine and possibly over heating the engine on top.

Getting ready for the air supplies. The blue circles are where I am thinking

KR> Engine Test

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner

Dan, I had to put a recess in my wing tanks also. I just made the recess
diameter 1/8 inch bigger than I needed, installed the gasket with no sealer
then poured a little jeffco tank sealer around the probe mount. I hauled these
tanks around in the back of an old van full of fuel for a couple of weeks to
test for leaks. Missouri has the worst roads in the nation so I considered this
a good test. So far no leaks.

  Mike Turner
  Jackson, Missouri

When putting the fuel probe in the tank, do you use gasket sealer or just
the gasket. The probe seller man said to use sealer and I did. It was
Locktite sealer and it just gooed all over and leaked. Other than that, the
  fuel gauge is working now.

That's easy enough. Make your own! I used a computer cable for one end of
the cable, (so at least one end was "factory" perfect), shortened it and put
a radio shack D-shell on it and ran it between the TRT250 and an off the

Sport Aviation had a suggestion, a long time ago about carburetor fires.
They suggested a Halon fire extinguisher in the cockpit area be plumbed

sensor that would detect a fire and light up a bright red light in the

earth and the pilot had one of those big KR/Corvair grins across his face that
still has not faded away. So here it is guys and
gals.
YEHAA
I am now a true KR pilot. Does that mean I have to sing at this years
gathering? Joe Weber flew in from southwest Wisconsin to witness the event. He
even got the take off on video (which I have viewed at least 20 times since I
have been home). The KR flew better than I ever expected. Take off and climb
out were smooth as glass and absolutely no porpoising. I had intended to stay
in the pattern and make one circuit and land but the plane felt so good that I
made two circuits around the airport then left the pattern and headed north of
the airport. My carb is an Ellison EFS2 which is a little too small for the
Corvair but still yielded me a cruse at wide open throttle of 144 mph with the
Sterba 56 x 64 prop I have. My static rpm is 2650 but I can not tell you my
cruise rpm yet as I forgot to look. CHT temp at cruise was dead on 300°, oil
temp at cruise was 180°, oil pressure at cruise was 50 psi, exhaust temp was
around 1200° (I did not write that down but called it out to Joe down on the
ground). Here is the best partthis KR is as stable as you could possibly
ask for. Not one time did it pitch, wobble, shutter, or cough, and IT FLEW
HANDS OFF. Just thought you guys would like to know..

KR> tri-carriage

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner
Andy, I bought a kr2 in the boat stage and cut it into on purpose so I could
stretch it another 14 inches. It wasn't too difficult for me because the bottom
ply skin had not been put on yet. I leveled the boat, built a support for both
the rear section and the front section so the top logerons could be maintained
in the same plane at all times. I cut through the boat 1/2 way between 2
vertical members using a 1 to 12 ratio angle on the cuts. I added an extra
logeron to the bottoms of both top logerons and an extra logeron to the tops
of both bottom logerons for the length of 2 stations (approx 28"). Once I had
the rear section moved back 14" I clamped 1"x2"s to the sides at the top
logerons and also near the bottom logerons to hold everything in place. By
doing this all of the horz. members top and bot had to be cut and replaced
because all of those distances will have to change. Also the bottom rake as it
slopes up to the tail will also change and compensation will have to be made to
accommodate this change in slopes. I also added 4 pieces of 3/32" plywood by 4"
wide to the joints on the inside of the skin. (this is over kill) Then put in
an extra station. If you already have the skin on the bottom stretching might
be out of the question unless you just cut the whole bottom out from the rear
spar back to the tail and replace it.

I am from South Africa and have just bought a partly assembled KR2.
We are not comfortable with a taildragger and would like to fit a tri-
wheel under carriage. Where can one find such and perhaps plans to
  fit them?
The previous owner had to cut the plane behind the cockpit to get it
out of his garage, and I wonder if someone has some views on the
best way to join the two parts. The frame is of wood.

KR>nut staplers

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner
This is for you guys that are worried about those nut staplers. You just have
to know what "women want" They like for you to buy them stuff and think about
them all the time. Which is exactly what I do. When I started building a kr I
let her know how much I was thinking about her by naming the kr after her "The
Miss Carolyn". Every chance I get I buy stuff for her. Instead of wasting money
on stupid stuff like flowers for her birthday I got her control cables and some
an bolts. For valentines day I got her a matching set of alum fuel fillers
rings with settings of plastic fuel filler caps Along with this wonderful gift
I got her another matching set of fuel senders with gages. Mothers day came
landing gear and brakes. For Christmas I got her a new table saw. Sometimes I
get her stuff out of the blue just to surprise her and show her just how much I
love her. I made her an instrument panel out plywood and let her pick out a
color to stain it. After she stained it and put on about 8 coats of clear
finish it looked beautiful. When the kr is done I'll let her pick what ever
color she wants to paint it. She's so happy I'm getting all this stuff for her
she is almost speechless. She did however ask me to get her some real sharp
kitchen knives and a pair of scissors for the new year -my guess is that
she wants them for trimming off excess epoxy.

KR> Weight and Balance

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner
If you know the location of the mains relative to the leading edge of the of
the wing you can make this determination. Let's say the mains are 8" behind
the leading edge, then they are at the forward limit for the cg envelope. When
empty and with the tail raised to flight position and the tail weighing nothing
then your empty weight cg is at the forward limit. When you add weight such as
pilot/passenger the cg moves back. Fuel, if it's a header tank will move the cg
back forward so you may be pretty close.

Excellent comments on the self lock crimp on the nut plate. I just finished
removing the nylon screws starting with the very smallest bit I had and
working my way up to the crimp size. I then used a tap to start the threads
till I felt the tap grab the nut plate then I backed off. I then carefully
inserted a screw in each nut plate and threaded it in till it started to
grab. Everything seems ok now, thank God !!! Learn from others mistakes and
save you a lot of grief. I hope someone else will benefit from my mistakes.
You can bet I will not try the nylon bolt thing again. Now on to making the
  counterbalance arm.

nylon screws wouldn't get hung up, but I long ago concluded that experience
doesn't mean anything over ideas on the net. You should be able to run
through a drill a bit smaller than the crimp on the self locking threads in
the nut plate. The only thing left should be some nylon residue that you
can be rid of by simply running a screw through the nut plate.

the self locking capability of the nut plates. If you can't get a screw
started after drilling the nylon screws, start a tap into the nut plate, but
just run it in deep enough that you can back it out and run a regular screw
  through the threads.

Larry I think it is important to point out that extreme care must be taken
when trying to roll wings level when that low wing is very near a stall as the
down deflected aleron will increase drag and A0A and make it quite possible to
stall that low wing. I can only stress getting the stick forward first then
bring the wings level slowely.
      Mike Turner

  # 2 (the best if terrain is not a concern) is to forget trying to
save the turn and the approach. Roll to wings level so that
all lift generated can be used to check the rate of decent.
With all lift generate at 90 degrees to the ground we don't
need such a high A of A to generate enough lift to check
our decent at the slower airspeed. Fly out of the situation
and do a better job on the approach next time. Keep the
A of A below the stall angle and you won't find youself
  eating dirt.

  Netters,

This is the latest episode of my story of a South-African built KR2 that I
am now trying to register in France. This piece will come with a word of
warning: guys, make sure your WAFs and wings will remain inspectable in the
  future!!

I went to Orleans this week-end, and spent a few hours working on my plane,
with the aim of preparing it for the inspection of all critical areas, as
agreed with the local inspectors. Let's say I had no success.

  - First of all, my attempt to drill inspection holes along the spars was a
mess. I used the wrong drill, it hadn't got a variator; the spar end
surfaces were not flat either... oh well, never mind, I'll find a better
  idea for next time.

  - Second, I got a very bad surprise while I was trying to drill inspection
holes for the WAFs nuts and bolts. Not only had they been painted over, but
also, some of them had been epoxied over!

I suspect the reason is when long range aluminium fuel tanks were installed
in the leading edge of the stubwings, the guy who did it found it convenient
to repaint the bolts, ; then, he moved the stringer, and epoxied it in place
  without bothering about the bolts...

Now, this is bad, because it is now impossible to check the bolts for
corrosion, let alone to check their torque, which is what the inspector
  requested.

So, I'm back a few steps. I guess I will have to find a way to remove and
  replace those bolts!

On the bright side, the experimental club has got a Jodel D18 for hire, at a
bargain proce, so that will keep me busy!

I've got a 0-145 lyc and the overhaul manual. There are three types of the
0-145 a,b and c models. The a and b models are rated 65hp at 2500rpm. The c
model rated 75hp at 3200rpm. The only difference between b and c models is that
the c has an internal reduction gear that reduces the prop speed from 3200 to
arround 2100 I think ??(I don't have the manual with me-- doing this from
memeroy which ain't too good lately). I think the manual said weight with
carb--mags ect.. is 183lbs not counting a starter. I have a b model-- the 2
mags by themselves weight 15 lbs. I think it's just too heavy for a kr2. I'm
still undesided what engine I will use on mine. I plan to build everything I
can without the engine, do a w/b then deside on engine type. At the moment I'm
leaning toward the EJ22 suberue or the corvair.

  Netters,

My KR passed it final inspection today with only 4 minor things
  to do / correct.

  1. label my outside canopy latch handle for "open" and "closed".
That item is done.
  2. A slight re-routing of my fuel line from the gascolator to the
carb. I plan to relocate my gascolator a few inches to take
care of that item. Estimated time 1 hour.
  3. Install a stretched spring in my crankcase vent line to the
air/oil separator to keep it from colapsing. Estimated time
  10 minutes.
  4. Re-safety my prop bolts with .040 wire instead of the .032
I had used. He indicated he had seen the lighter wire
fail but never the .040. Estimated time 30 minutes.

THEN IT IS READY TO FLY!!!

The aircraft inspection took about 30 minutes and the paperwork
was maybe 1.5 hours. The inspector's only comment was " you're
going to have a nice airplane". I promised to stop in and see
him on my way to visit Mark Langford when I get the time flown
off. He was going to give me a 50 mile flight test area but I asked
him to include one of my favorite airports at 54 miles. He said he
would just make it 55 miles instead.

  What he looked for:
  - general workmanship
  - use of proper hardware and the correct use of that hardware. Bolts
the right length, only steel locknuts in the engine compartment,
  turnbuckles safety wired, etc.
  - All required placards and all controls, switches, knobs, etc., labeled
  for operation.
  - He suggested I install a heat shield on the bottom end of my brake line to
shield it from the heat of the brake. My line is nylon. He didn't
write that one up but I have an easy fix in mind and will probably
take care of that item before first flight.

It will be a few days before I have time to finish correcting the items
and the weather is forcasted to be bad for a few days so it will
probably be at least the weekend before first flight. I'll keep
  you posted.

KR>polyester/epoxy

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner
It is my understanding that there are three types of resins, polyester,
vinalester and epoxy resin. Epoxy resins will not bond to polyester products
but will bond to vinal-ester "sort of". The same applies to polyester products
not bonding to epoxy products but will bond to vinal-ester products "sort of".
So what you have is vinal-ester which will bond to both. So according to theory
if you want to bond polyester to an epoxy product you would have to use a
vinal-ester layer between the two products. This would not be as strong a bond
as epoxy to epoxy or polyester to polyester because of the makeup of the
molecules involved. Think of a vinal-ester molecule as being 1/2 poly-ester and
1/2 epoxy therefore you will get only half of the bonding strength.
The above is based on information from "Fiberglass Composite materials"
written by Forbes Aird

DO NOT use polyester resin to build your KR (period)

Polyester Resin, as stated below, cannot be properly bonded to/or with other
  adhesives.

So the statement "There is nothing wrong with building a plane using
polyester", has to be wrong on it's face.

- Polyester Resin comes NO WHERE near having the strength of epoxy.

I suggest that you build yourself a Flip-O-Matic, ala Mark Langford. You
will need it anyway. You must be building the top side on the plane.
Carefully remove it, flip your plane, turn the wing over, put it back on and

Roger congradulation on the first flight, I'm building a kr2s, have it in
the boat stage. I too am planning on the sub ej22. What did your empty weight
come out to? Could you tell us at what weight you are test flying this plane
and what kind and size of prop are you using? Got any pictures??

I've decided to sell my KR2 project. You can see details at
http://home.swfla.rr.com/ronmartha/ in the Ron'sKR2 directory. This
aircraft was started as a stretch KR2 with 14 inches added aft, and 5 inches
forward. Width is standard, and controls are set to allow single or dual
operation. Spars are finished and wing parts ready to foam. Aluminum tanks
<3> and set up for good CG control. See detailed description at KR2.rtf
Lots of pictures, in a somewhat organized grouping.

I've spent $11,317 somewhat wisely, and will sell for half price ($5653)
until mid November. Then, if not sold, I will part it out on eBay when I
get back to Florida in January. See $'s invested at KR INVEST.rtf

KR>progress report news

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner
Larry, where is your baggage compartment, behind the seat or in the front
deck area? It would be better if the cg was a little forward but you have 2
things going for you in the configuration you have now. 1) you have that extra
24" of strech which should help in the pitch area. 2) in the landing phase you
will proberly have the belly board down which will tend to pitch the nose down.
Have you done any high speed taxi test with the board down? It would be
interesting to see if the tail wants to come up.

First the good news. I found out today that I will become
GRANDPA for the first time next May! Awsome!

  Progress report:

I weighed the KR today. It is a 24 inch stretch with an
0-200, 600X6 main gear, 6 inch tailwheel, wing tanks
only, Cessna flap motor on the speed brake and basiclly
just a HEAVY bird. We used some very accurate electronic
scales. I'm using the same C.G. range as the standard KR
and will approach the rear C.G. with caution during testing.
Here is the long and short of it:

My C.G. range is __53.5 to 61.5 inches

  Total empty weight including oil,
intercom and headset 764 lbs.@53.4 inches
  Pilot (me) at 204 lbs._968 lbs.@57.9 inches
  Fuel (25 gal@6.2 p/g=155lbs._ 1123 lbs.@58.8 inches
  Pass @200 lbs._1323 lbs.@61.2 inches

I'll have to keep an eye on my baggage/passanger weight.
My C.G. will move forward 1 inch from full fuel to empty fuel.
As a frame of reference, Marty Robert's KR has an empty
weight of 780 pounds as of the last Gathering.

Jeff Scott has a KR basiclly identical to mine but he used
the Continental mount from RR ( I think) and his C.G. came
out an inch or two better than mine. I'm using a Hapi VW
mount with a 1 inch spacer. I believe the 2s moves the wing
back 2 inches or stated another way, moved the firewall
forward 2 inches. If my fuselage were built to 2s dimensions
I'd be right on the money.

I need to get my "N" number applied and get it inspected.
I've had it on the runway for some taxi test. I've had the
speed up to maybe 35 mph but have yet to lift the tail.
  I'll keep you posted.

KR>Isn't that PCB idea great?

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner

I would think the PBC would have the same strength or better than the
plywood but I would want to know what kind of resin was used in the manafacture
of the PBC. If it's made from a vinal ester product, then that's what I would
use to glue it to the wood. If it's made from an epoxy resin I would use an
epoxy resin glue. It's not a question of the type of glue used for the wood, it
has to do with the bonding properties between the glue and the PBC.

KR>new KR builder - spar question

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner
keith what you read is correct. You get a full web on the rear face of the
forward spar and a full web on the forward face of the rear spar (outer wings).
You also get a web on the front face of the front spar for the first 12" only.
and you get a web on the back of the rear spar for 12" only. You don't need
that extra web it only adds weight

  Hello,

Ok, so I've wanted to build a KR-1 since October, 1974 (yes, I still have the
magazine) and I just now got around to ordering the plans. They have arrived
and I am carefully reading the assembly instructions, trying to visualize this
project.

Step 4.2.10 includes this note: "the front spars have web full length only on
the aft face. The aft spars have web full length only on the forward face."

Huh? The accompanying drawings make no indication of this, and, if indeed
this is the case, where does the web stop? Do other builders do this? Or, is
this, like Monnett's "weight saving" spar holes in the Sonerii, advice best
ignored? Should the web be full length of the spar on both faces?

Thanks in advance. I'm sure I will have many more questions in the comming
months and years.

Keith, you need to read the plans and manual very carefully and then read
them again. It's the little things that'll get you. For example be carefull to
run the grain of the plywood vertical not horz. for the spars. It makes a
difference!

Thanks, Mike. The plans did not make this clear. Were I already building, I'd
be starting on effort no. 2. (I know. I wouldn't be the first.) I've already
learned a great deal from this and other KR sites.

KR>Register and question--folding wings

2008-10-12 Thread Mike Turner
Colin: In order to fold the wings with the bolts of the wing attach
fittings, the bolts would all have to be in the same plane and all 4 bolts in
line with each other which they are not. The wing attach fittings are in the
vertical plane but at different elevations due to the angle of incindence of
the wing. When you try to lift the outer portion of the wing you will put the
hinge points in a bind right away. Without a re-design of the wing attach
fittings I would not try it. Another method of folding wings was shown in the
march edition of sport Aviation on the Dyke Delta.

  Netters,
I bought an aircraft that was 80% complete and I registered it under the
previous builder's number (his social) and transferred the N number to me, no
problem. If it is a first time register, any number can be assigned so long as
no one else has it.
Second: Has anyone tried to fold the KR2 wings by just using the upper
bolts of the wing attach fittings and securing the wings vertically? Other than
the height, this seems the simplest.

I want to thank Jim Faughn, Larry Fleshner and others for coming to the
Cape Girardeau airshow. I'm looking forward to Jim's vido and Larry's first
flight in his KR2s in the near furture. My Kr2s is under construction and sits
in a warehouse about 10 miles north of the Cape airport. Next time you guys are
arround I would like for you to take a look at it. I would have taken you guys
there but just couldn't find the time as the airshow had me pretty well tied
up.

   Mike
Turner

I'm heading off tomorrow at noon for a quick trip to San Francisco but
wanted to update you on Oshkosh. I'll be flying in on either Sunday
(preferable) or Monday and all KR's that aren't camping should try to
park in the automotive engine area. I am working on updating the
presentation for Forum, with Mark's help, and have some pretty exciting
video I will be using for talking through the landing presentation. This
last Sunday, I took a friend who is in the video business (like Video
Bob) and he went for a 1st flight in my KR to the Cape Girardeau
airshow. The entire purpose was to get a video that showed what it was
like in the phases of landing a KR. We just finished editing the video
and it exceeds my expectations. For those that have never flown in a KR,
this is as real as it gets. We did a really good landing and then on the
way back, I let him know we were going to do a botched approach that we
would have to correct for. This required a good slip and a bit of a
bounce that was all captured out of the canopy. Pretty good friend to do
this with me! Anyway besides the landing sequences, you will also see
the KR up close and personal with an F-18, F16 and a Blackhawk
helicopter on the ground. They also gave me permission to make
closed traffic, a low approach and an abrupt vertical move to leave the
area which is also on tape. This video will be shown at our talk at
Oshkosh. By the way, I got to see several KR people which was why I went
in the first place. Thanks for the hospitality Mike and Larry. For those
that aren't going, you will have to wait. My friend, also named Bob, has
volunteered, once I'm back, to finish the edit with my narration of the
landings and then encode it for delivery on the Web. Hopefully by late
  August.

Take care and I hope to see everyone at Oshkosh.
