Good morning All,
Has anyone out there tried working on a smooth, plastic cover cloth? I
had read about them, 'somewhere' and when I saw some at the NEC last
year decided to buy a couple to try. I know that in France many people
work with a smooth piece of leather under their bobbins. The one I

Taking a workshop class or course we expect to learn, but what does the
different names suggest . Does it influence your choice? Should the name
reflect the content?
I think of a workshop as being short-term; an hour, a day, at most a
weekend.
Hello Spiders,
I came across these on eBay and thought someone might be interested in
them. I don't know anything about them but the price seems to be somewhat
reasonable. There's only a few hours left in the auction.

This does look like a good deal. I already have more Russian books than I

Jean,
When working Honiton and simliar laces I always use acetate to surround the area I'm
working on then a cover cloth with a hold cut in the middle (that sounds worse than it
really is).
I find that the acetate underneath the cover cloth gives the cover cloth a diferrent
feel to that of
I feel that I must apologise . Yes I can now see to do lace and am doing
some tatting. However, my fingers cannot stand to spend a lot of time
pushing pins in. I have become mostly housebound most of the time. I
refuse to list my health problems, just know that have no real access to a
xerox
I think that pins only get pushed down for certain laces (I could be
wrong), but it seems that the lace I've seen made (and made myself) pins
get pushed down in honiton, and tape, and probably the other sectional
laces like duchess, etc (I haven't made duchesse or Milanese so can't

I can talk about workshops and classes both from the perspective of taking
them, as well as teaching them.
I think of a workshop as a short term intense concentration on some specific
type of bobbin lace. Homework and preparation are both matters for teachers
as well as students. Students

In certain types of bobbin lace one does push the pins all the way down.
This is done specifically in free/part laces such as Honiton, Duchesse and
tape laces. The reason is that you constantly change directions as you work
and sometimes work over parts already finished. You have to get the
Hello all,
When I want to find out something I turn first to the internet (if I don't
have it here in one of my reference books) and then to you. Therefore:
O Great Fount of Wisdom and Knowledge that is the Arachne list,
What is the difference between a Tulip tree and a Magnolia tree?

Hello all,
It must have been because I asked for your wisdom that I found the answer
immediately after I wrote you the question. It seems that a Tulip Tree is
a member of the Magnolia family. I still am not sure what are the trees
that I see in my neighbourhood but at least I can check out
Thanks Jim,
It is that the tulip tree normally has yellow flowers that decides the
matter. What we have here are magnolias and they are just starting to
bloom. Lovely big blooms with petals fading from violet to white on the
tips. The petals are big and waxy and if only they lasted longer
Hi I wanted to thank my Secret Pal from somewhere in Brittain for another
lovely parcel!
It arrived on friday but i was out of town visiting family :-)
The thread snips are wonderful, i've no idea how i coped using regular
scissors before!
The bobbins are fantastic also, and i will be trying out
I clicked onto the URL that Heather of Abbotsford BC, and saw the blooms of what we in
the South call a Tulip or Yellow Poplar tree. In Virginia, my Magnolia trees bloom in
late May to early June with a beautiful creamy white bloom that has a heavenly aroma.
I often take the blooms and float
Dear Secret Pal, what a surprise when I got home yesterday, a beautiful
bobbin and a pile of spangles.Thank you so much. I love Scotch Thistles,
they are one of my favourite things, and all those spangles, I can have a
great time doing the bobbins I have had waiting.I still have no idea who you
Hi,
I'm just curious, am I the only one that just gets occasional digests?
Looking at the recent history, for lace I have got 74, 75, 76, 79, 80 and
83 and for chat I have got 55, 56, 57, 60 and 63. I know the issue is
unrelated to mail box size (it would be quite a challenge to come close to
I debated this one long and hard, and decided it was OK to forward to
the entire list, if only by the skin of the, er... teeth. As usual, on
the grounds that it's more funny than it's dirty. Apologies to source
(who's on chat, and will see it again).

Helen,
That probably indicates a problem at your ISP's end (digests being bounced),
although I'd have to check the server records to make sure. I have received
all the digests since the beginning of the month. If you want me to forward
missing digests to you, let me know and I'll gladly do so.

Personally, I think that, in a modern society, general draft is
excusable only by open and unprovoked invasion of one's country (ie,
like ours in Iraq). A *selective* draft should be totally unthinkable
in a modern *and democratic* one... Nevertheless, this little snippet
is interesting -- how
The East Texas (and central) magnolias are like Betty Ann's. The next-door
neighbors have one that is just outside my bedroom window (second floor).
Smells lemony when in bloom. Our cook always cautioned us about sleeping in
the same room with them, though. She said it was give us a headache.
Re: A *selective* draft
Tamara, thank you for alerting us as to what our wonderful politicians
are coming up with again. Not only am I appalled, but I think we should
draft those specialized politicians to be political and assist
whatever country into becoming more mixed up and asinine like
