I attended a class in Mechlin lace here in Australia several years ago, with
Ulrike Voelker. She used fine insect pins as support pins, and even brought
some with her to sell to us.
I learnt a lot in those classes about lacemaking, but never went on with

There was an article in Piecework fairly recently about lacemaking being
taught to Native Americans in the past, but I can't lay my hands on my copy
at the moment.
Someone gave me a bag of the beads they use to stuff dolls to use in a
pincushion. I found they worked very well. I've had the same pincushion in
use for over 10 years, it has never altered shape, holds the pins well, no
sign of corrosion in some brass pins that have been in there for ages (I
Jeri, what a lovely, cheering thought for those alone on Christmas Day. I'm
not alone, but dealing with some family medical problems, and these
confections brightened my day. I'm quoting the entire message below so

When I have a lot of magic threads at the beginning of a piece, I make them
quite long, and plait them together, in a couple of groups. I also knot the
raw ends together. I then pin all the ends together through the loops with
one safety pin. When I finally finish the piece, I undo each plait
in thread without fear.

We have a similar problem with another chat group I belong to, and I will
pass this on to those who are affected.
My biggest problem with Arachne (I use Explorer, but nothing goes into Spam

I've just heard that an Australian visiting the upcoming IOLI meeting in the

Sorry, my books won't be available at the IOLI convention, freight to the US
would be prohibitive. I only updated the original booklet and had some
printed for the OIDFA congress in Adelaide this year, and sadly, they didn't
sell well, so I definitely don't want the additional expense of posting
I think I've found a printing error in Pamela Nottingham's Bedfordshire
Lace Making. My edition is a hard cover, 1992.
On page 11 is a diagram of how to do a leaf. She says make a cloth stitch
and Take the third thread to the right under and over the outside thread.

I have just acquired from a deceased estate a quantity of reels of Bull
brand Irish Linen, 100/2 - Brenda's book says it is 33 WPC. I gather it is
no longer available, a Google search did not turn up any hits.
It is a very smooth thread, no slubs, compared to the 100/2 Fresia I have

I'm self taught from a book - Rosemary Shepherd's Introduction to Bobbin
Lacemaking which is based on the correspondence lessons she wrote for the
Australian Lace Guild. When you live in a small country town in Australia,
there's no other option. The book is still available from Rosemary

Cheap chopsticks make ideal bobbins for scarves, with the hair grip as
suggested by Liz, or just rubber bands tightly wound above and below the thread

I too looked up Brildor in Brenda's bible, without success, but by a
process of deduction, (on page 7 she quotes Nel 90/2 and Nel 100/2 as being
