Re: [lace] Ecclesiastical lace?

2021-06-15 Thread mary carey
Good Morning Elena and others

I am in Campbelltown (near Sydney), New South Wales, Austraila. A number of
years ago I was given a book on Ecclesiastical lace. It seems to be a record
of -3rd Biennale Internazionale del Merlerto, 13th to 28th Septtembre 1997.
The Lace is Cantu and - a cura di Marialuisa Rizzini.

My interest in Ecclesiastical lace is filet crochet, but I have held on to the
book in case I found someone who needed it.

If you are interested, Please let me know and I will post it to you. It is
entirely in Italian.

[lace] Armenian Lace

2019-09-29 Thread mary carey
Good Morning,

This morning I received four pics from my son, taken on and sent from a mobile
phone. He works for an Armenian School in Northern Sydney as groundsman, bus
driver, other non teaching jobs and was asked to go as one of the adult
supervisors with a group of Yr 10 (about 16 years old) students.

Would have been nice if there was more magnification of the technique but I
guess for the preservation of the article that was not allowed. When he
started talking about going I gave him a handkerchief I had done an edging
from Elena Dickson's book. The email heading was "Armenian cross stitch" -
should be grateful he took the time to take the pics I guess.

Do not engage in any of the other lines of communication, only email and a
couple of special interest lists like Arachne so unfortunately cannot share
them with you. One large round mat, I recognise the technique, but a ?
lizard, ? platypus is worked differently.

the five hat patterns seem to be just that, individual patterns, all in
Milanese technique. They are - Sommerhute, Hut Beatrice, Hut Kerstin, Hut

[lace] What about Nurses?

2018-05-20 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

I come from a Nursing background and find lots of nurses among fellow
lacemakers - Margaret Stephens of needlelace fame for one. A certain
preciseness is necessary in the performance of nursing duties. Lacemaking
takes one out of a stressful zone and allows rejuvenation in mind.

Noticing things, minute changes so as to intervene before a crisis arises
predisposes one to explore different techniques and extend one's field of
knowledge.

[lace] Lace and Getting Started

2018-03-27 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

My paternal grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 9 and has been a
passion ever since. Became interested in Ecclesiastical work and have done a
few large pieces (No 40 thread mostly) for Altar cloths.

In my early 'looking for books' journey I ordered from England Margaret Jeans'
book "Ecclesiastical and Ceremonial Embroidery" and went looking for
lacemaking from there. Have a copy of the book Margaret compiled on
Ecclesiastical bobbin lace of several styles. Joined the Australian Lace
Guild, NSW Branch in late 1983, kept the receipt, in order to do the
Correspondence Course. The text of the Course was refined and published,
republished several times, as "Introduction to Lacemaing" by Rosemary
Shepherd.

Another of our Guild members, Barbara Ballantyne, has published several books
on the life and work of Mary Card, an early designer of Filet Lace, would be
interesting to the lacemaker enquiring about crochet tablecloths.

[lace] Samples

2017-09-13 Thread mary carey
Good Morning All,

I first learned Lace by Correspondence, the text of which became "Introduction
to Lacemaking" by Rosemary Shepherd, and I had several preschoolers at the
time.

Now, 34 years later, I am finding the samples very useful when demonstrating,
makes an impression - early samples and I had preschoolers at the time. They
are worked in Perle 8 and are coloured which is also an advantage.

When some Kosova refugees were temporarily housed in Australia, one lady made
me a small mat, bottle green in Knotted Needle Lace, which was sewn onto a
plain square for a quilt.

In my "one day box" is a plan for a white on white (cream on cream also works)
quilt, would also be a good way to give function to samples.

Have some extra bobbins and a roll pillow which will work when stuffed a

[lace] Lace Express

2017-03-23 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

Received the latest (and last) copy of Lace Express this week. I joined a
couple of years in and purchased back copies early. Photography and layout
always top class, and we all have "how to" books to refer to if prickings not
immediately clear.

It has been a very interesting journey through different designers' work,
techniques, even the ones I would never do. Have found it interesting to know
what others make and to see what others have done with their finished pieces.

If we want to continue to have this standard of information available to us in
books as well as magazines, we need to be very careful about copying within
allowable guidelines, and making the effort to buy our own copies of designs
to enable the process to continue.

At least a couple of times a year, I get mine out and look through them. I
also have a Data Base a friend set up for me so if I am looking for something
specific I do not have to look through 20 years of magazines. I have sections
so almost all information on sewing/crochet/lace can be recorded.

[lace] Books/ out of print books

2017-03-19 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

I have taken the view that if I am vaguely interested in something and the
opportunity comes up I buy it even if I am not quite ready to go in that
direction.

Guild Libraries are good to introduce new ideas, and I agree with the previous
lacemaker who said that when she finds something she really likes, she seeks
to acquire her own copy of the book.

Cannot remember exactly how long ago was the visit to a Bookstore in Glebe,
Sydney (we were early for a function) when I paid A$120 for five books. One
was the first Read and Kincaid Milanese lace book and one Robyn Wild's, it was
35-40 years ago. Have only recently started venturing into Milanese.

On the other side I have recently acquired a copy of their second book, via
Abe books, used to be in a London Library!

The other reason I buy books when I see them is I like to know about other
styles of Lace (that I will never do) to have a broader understanding of Lace
in general.

Hi Arachnids

When I design a Beds pricking I always draw the lines round clothwork black
and plaits brown, after I once found myself using the line for the plait
adjacent to clothwork as the boundary of the clothwork. I also recommend
colouring in Bucks clothwork circles that have the same pin configuration as
honeycomb rings. After making the lid motif in my geometrical book three
times
and getting one of the rings wrong in each I coloured the clothwork circles
and had no trouble making one correctly. Your pricking is for your own use
and
what you do with it to enable you to make good lace is no one else,s business
but yours.

Have fun

However, we did catch the Exhibition of Inuit stone carvings which was missing

Dear Linda,

In May I attended a Workshop, Bucks but the suggestion would work for any
style, and Heather encouraged us to bring the working diagram (would work with
copy of pricking) of the piece we were working on copied A4 to A3 size and
come with coloured markers. We then traced the progress of the bobbins before
we started.

Learned lace by correspondence initially when I had small children which meant
there were breaks from lace so I understand what you mean.

It is a process I intend to use with some of the patterns from Lace Express
that are not in one particular style, but a mix of Lace styles.

Ecclesiastical lace is what brought me to Lace in the first place, and without

[lace] Teaching skills and lace

2014-08-23 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

My first experience of a brilliant person who had difficulty passing on the
information she knew was one of my first teachers in Primary School. I need
to point out that the first 5 years of my education were by Correspondence (in
Australia now called Distance Education) so I was about 11 at the time. One
of the best was in the Senior Years in High School, taught Geography and
instilled the formula for essay writing, saved my bacon.

My only teaching training was Certificate IV in Workplace Training, a method
of assisting adults teach other adults in the Workplace - I did it as part of
First Aid Training.

Have not found an outlet for my interest in teaching Lace, but I feel I could
manage it on a one to one basis. I agree with the Australian Lace Guild's
stand on Proficiencies before teaching on their behalf, but there would be
many teachers of Lace out there in local groups and on a one to one basis
without that background.

[lace] Lacemakers of Puget Sound

2014-07-10 Thread mary carey
Dear Ladies,

Had a success with your Demonstration Fish yesterday!!! Think I have two
converts in 7 1/2 yr old GD and daughter. Almost 3 year old GD insisted on
helping her mother.

Have waited patiently for this to happen!! Dad was looking up beginner
patterns on the internet so I think this one will be a goer.

[lace] Lace with and without an end use

2014-05-05 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

My best piece is back on my lounge room wall, Eeva-Liisa's Crucifixion.
Made is specifically for my Dad's 80th birthday and he gave it back to me when
he downsized as he moved in with one of my brothers. Incidentally, he
turned 91 2 weeks ago.

I have made dresses, pop over style, for my two eldest (now 8 and 7) for
winter with a strip of torchon on the bottom. Lots of crochet lace in Wedding
packages over the years.

For Bobbin lace, I make it with the intention of being useful but it does
not always work out. Have a number of lengths in a special box waiting for
something to be sewn on to, including a piece for a top for myself.

The one piece I sewed onto a square for a quilt was not my work. When the
Kosova ladies were at one of the local Army barracks, one of them made a
knotted needle lace doily which went into one of the Childrens' Charity
quilts. Have a basic plan on my Bucket List to do a cream-on-cream quilt for
a special purpose, with some handmade lace on it.

Finishing things is a problem for me - usually will finish part but the actual
finishing, e.g., mounting onto linen is often the problem.

RE: [lace] Digitizing designs?

2014-02-26 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

I have a Brother Quatro 6000D (Embroidery Machine) which has a pad connected
to the machine, a built in program and a pen(also connected to the machine) so
you can trace an outline and it is automatically placed in the machine's
design program. The defining of line thickness, stitch density and colour are
then determined.

If you have a friend with a newish embroidery machine (most brands would be
able to do what mine can) they might do it for you.

This a trace-and-colour process which is the domestic equivalent of
digitizing. Works beautifully using childrens' colouring books, but does not
do anything too complicated.

[lace] What is the biggest and the hardest piece of lace you have ever done?

2014-01-12 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

I find Torchon a suitable area to focus on with a little Bucks but have a
collection of Eevaa-Liisa's pictures and edgings.

Made, in 4 months, The Crucifixion for my Dad's 80th (he will be 91 this
year) and there were a few components. Firstly, my friend's husband made a
square base - approx 23 1/2 square, for a standard piece of styrofoam from a
local store. I covered the foam with wool batting left over from a quilt
project then plain homespun. Followed the advice of Pat Milne (did a few
workshops a number of years ago) to make not only the one needed at the time
and also made sections which fit in the base.

I made from my own design (usually use other people's ideas) a carry bag for
it - would have been better if I had made the handles longer, would then have
been able to carry it over my shoulder.

Working with 92 prs was a challenge until I started using stitch holders (for
knitting) and sets of 4 knitting needles with rubber stoppers on the end.
Found this useful as when restarting with a set of bobbins - you could start
from either end.

The framed piece came back to Sydney for the 25 yr Exhibition in the Foyer of
State Government House and now hangs off our wall. Dad returned it to me when
he moved in with other family.

The Guardian Angel has been on the pillow for some years now - might add
finishing it to the list of activities for 2014.

Good luck everyone with your finishing activities this year.

David, have you not trained the cat?
My most challenging piece is still on the pillow: Wisteria Hankie Edging.
It is a Bedfordshire pattern which was trued up by Christine Springett, and
I started it on her course last May.
Since then it has been sitting there, and I stare at it, and think: one day
 I am getting you finished.
One more comment: Christine does the most wonderful enlarged working
 diagrams.

I'm really proud of that piece. Shame the cat had to go and piss on it.

Hi All,

I have a plastic magazine holder from the Stationery shop to hold a number of
spiral bound, self published lace books from Aussie authors and find that is
neat and effective.

I like the idea for a spiral bound book because it does lay flat but I
also
 do not like
them because they do not sit on a self very well and tend to
 scrap against other books
when put on a shelf. They do not also slide as well
on a shelf so I would rather not have

Something else which is useful (did not always do it) is to put the source of

Have seen several ways (the one I have is from Pat Milne of Canberra) of

Personally I prefer plain fabric to cover both pillows and cover cloths.

One person has already mentioned machine embroidery, would not be difficult to

corner.

Am doing some Aussie flowers on the corners of some fabric given to me for
OIDFA in Adelaide - they will be about 18 square.

Recently made myself a cover cloth with a hole in the middle to fit the French
fan cross I make regularly for Weddings and First Communions and find that it
just fits the Torchon Ring patterns designed by Alice Vokac - book a

Hi All,

I, too, have learned much from the list but do not post often. The family feel
of a list is nice and you get to recognise the style of some of the regular
posters and will occasionally use the delete button if you are having a
difficult day.

I know that if there is an email from Jeri or others with history or
conserving information, I wait till I have time to read them.

It is possible that I do not do as much lace as I should, but the interest is
strong. Hope one day to teach a granddaughter, and am always looking for
opportunities to teach new lacemakers. When individuals learn the basics they
will indentify which lace they would like to try next, then they can be
directed to an expert in that area.

One of the lists I was on which faded out was Church Sew - after all it was
things Ecclesiastical that lead me to lace in the first place.

Am copying all the replies on how people have made Continental pillows and
keeping them in a folder. Expect it will be some time till I actually make

Met my friend with MS at an Aqua class at the local gym. Her husband gets her
into the pool from her wheelchair and they go several times a week. She is
still working as an Accountant and as he is so attentative I do not think he
would baulk at the idea of being a pin pusher. As an alternative, I would
like to try using the set of hand carved continental bobbins someone bought
for me at a Garage sale (not sure what North Hemisphere folks call them).

Thank you to everyone who took the time to reply. To Sharon, received
confirmation that the parcel arrived in Windsor, Ontario with one of my
heirloom crochet projects - cut my Wedding dress and veil to make a First
Communion outfit, worn by three daughters and now a granddaughter has for hers

2012-11-13 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

I have received the 100 photos from Flicker, starting with the butterfly at
least 10-15 times, not sure what it has done to my (and others I am sure)

Trimming posts requests have come before and I think the request applies to
that series of pictures.

Thank you to the person who posted them originally, but once was enough.

RE: [lace] Irish crochet

2012-08-01 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

The picture of Olgemini's work makes me think of the tendency of lacemakers to
want perfection in fine work for everything they do.

Irish Crochet is one practical way to introduce new people to lacemaking, they
may then be inspired to do finer work, they may not. It would be good to see
a booklet with practical applications - like a motif in heavier thread to sew
on the pocket of jeans, a shirt. It may encourage more people to become
involved.

Snakes make useful bookmarks, but lace to wear need not be as fine as the work
regularly seen by a NSW Guild member at Meetings.

Lacemaking is more than fine Bucks Point, Torchon, Milanese etc, etc, etc.

RE: [lace] Church lace

2012-07-30 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

There used to be a Church Sew List a number of years ago and we were able to
learn lots from that list.

Most of the church lace I do is filet crochet and the fabric distributed by
Church Stores in Sydney is called 'sharella' which is not linen, so does not
put up some of those problems - washes very well. It is hard to get best
quality lighter weight fabric for the smaller linens. I have a blocking board
covered by woven chech fabric which makes blocking crochet easier.

I have a length of a torchon edge, pattern from Marie-Clare Downham's book, is
worked in DMC 30, no destination as yet.

Any conversation about Ecclesiastical work is interesting to me.

Hi All,

Treated my eldest daughter - lives in Windsor, Ontario - to some credit at a
local knitting store for her birthday and Christmas - and she is already
knitting a shawl. She asked me questions I could not answer about knitting
from a graph. Have worked from a graph on lots of occasions for crochet and
tatting but not knitting. Yes, I knit but not from a graph.

Did tatting lessons with her once - we both had a copy to the same book and
was able to ask her to refer to a specific page, and it was before Skype too.

I hope to make a baby shawl for another daughter's baby (due April) but I will
dust off my knitting machine for that. I also have a large spool of pink
cotton to try lace knitting - a machine has an amazing range of possibilities
if one cares to explore them.

If anyone can help with a simple explanation, please email me privately.

RE: [lace] Your story

2011-11-24 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

I came to lace through my interest in things Ecclesiastical - have my original
receipt for joining the Australian Lace Guild, Nov 83, which was needed to do
the original Correspondence Course. The text of the course has been revised,
and revised again each time Rosemary Shepard republishes her book.

Can remember being 5-6 when I started knitting and using Mum's treadle machine
and learning to knit. My mum was only a basic seamstress (20 years old, 80
miles from the corner store and having babies), but taught me what I asked
when I asked. The real inspiration to go further came from my grandmother
Alice, who taught me to crochet aged 9 when she was dieing from liver cancer.

Crochet has always been my most productive area, but I have my second
Eeva-Liisa picture on my big pillow and have to finsih a Russian Lace reindeer
to go on a blue velvet dress for eldest granddaughter (6) who lives in
Canada.

Did a lot of embroidery in my teenage years, but in the last 30 years,
patchwork has occupied a regular amount of time. Lace still has a special
part in my creative life and the biggest regret that I have is not having more
opportunity to teach others some of the skills I have acquired over the years.
If it is a thread related craft, I have either tried it or have information in
one of my books.

Had already made the decision to work towards my Teaching Certificate in
Crochet when I heard this week that Betty Franks collapsed and died a couple
of days ago in Brisbane. Oh to be able to display the same generosity and
quiet confidence. I met Betty for the first time in October at the Australian
Lace Guild Workshop/AGM week.

RE: [lace] Lace diagrams

2011-10-30 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

The best thing about coloured diagrams is that it allows many more lace books
to be printed, the one edition catering for up to 5 language groups.

I am sure I am not the only one whose mind works quicker that than her hands,
plans to do more lace have to be shelved, or to put off finishing something.
The diagrams are useful to refresh ones memory when returning.

Many of the books I have give coloured diagrams for only the early, simpler
pieces.

When looking at a book of a style of lace not familiar to me, it is useful to
have the diagrams - as with the Swiss book with a different style of Point
Ground I bought at the Lace Guild Week earlier this month - so I can
understand the differences. Flanders is another lace that the learner
understands better with coloured diagrams - have not actually made any, hope
to book for a class in 2012.

Correspondence, and Rosemary Shepard was my first teacher of Bobbin Lace and I
think Rosemary's diagrams for the absolute beginner are the best available
anywhere.

For crochet, knitting and tatting diagrams make working those laces possible!

Hi All,

I have a pink and a blue length of narrow lace which I plan to put around the
hem, say 3-4 up, on a blue velvet material. The dresses will be plain bodice
(with reindeer on) and the girls will be 5 and 6 on their next birthdays. The
thread is DMC 30 and the patterns are from Pat Milne's collection and Lace
Express.

Question - should I wash it before attaching? The dresses will be 'special

lives in Canada and the other in Wollongong (about 1 hour drive south of

[lace] Pillows

2011-08-15 Thread mary carey
I have not made a roller pillow, but have made several sizes of blocks for
block pillows. I am lucky to be a quilter also which leaves me with pieces of
wool batting which make excellent coverings for styrofoam before putting
cotton - homespun - over that. The largest is a 23 1/2 square pillow (has a
masonite base with sides made by a friend's husband) and it has it's second
Eeva-Liisa picture on it at the moment.

One roller pillow (as per Pamela Nottihgham's book) was made for me by an
upholsterer and that works well too.

RE: [lace] Bobbin Lace Instructions - Written Out for the Teacherless

2011-03-06 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

This is not bobbin lace, but nevertheless lace - crocheting. I first learned
from my grandmother when I was about 9 1/2 when she was dieing from cancer,
and I taught my girls, one at about 6.

Jeanette now lives in Windsor, Ontario, and in the last few months before she
left home for Canada, one of her friends was having a baby. Since I first
taught her at 6, she only did granny squares - just large ones for babies. I
did not give her a choice, bought a pattern for a shawl and told her she was
going to make that one. Following the experience of learning to read a
pattern, she has produced some amazing things including a striped rug with 3D
sunflowers.

Seems to be like unlocking something or holding their hands while they take
the first step then they are off.

Personally, I learned from the Correspondence Course run by the Australian
Lace Guild, the text of which is Rosemary Shepard's book. Having started
school with Correspondence (now called Distance Education here) could have
helped. I can learn from books on my own after having studied the text,
watched videos - am about to launch my Tape Lace stage.

I have not done needle lace but have seen (saved it for my Croatian born

were working on cookie pillows on an angle as already described and they used
both hands to tension the thread when necessary. Their hands moved very
quickly.

The other two styles were Lepovka lace, a bobbin lace, and Hv. (?spelling)
which had mostly been worked in convents from hand spun fibres, seemed to be
related to Teneriffe from what I remember.

[lace] Fine Linen or Cotton Fabric

2010-09-21 Thread mary carey
Good Morning Wise Ones,

One of my regular activities is to wash the small linens from my Church
(I am Catholic) each week. Some of the corporals are getting a little
sorry looking and I would like some idea of where I can access some fine
linen or good quality cotton, slightly heavier than handkerchief
linen/cotton.

In an emergency, I have used some cotton from Spotlight but that is not
really good enough. The Parish does not blink when I present a bill,
eg, for dry cleaning when the candle wax will not come out, so cost is
not the first concern. I have looked at Church stores in Dymocks
Building, but what they sell is too fine for my liking.

With the highlighters, I photocopy the pattern first so I am not ruining the

an altar frontal), allows you to see where you have been as well as where you
are going.

Should work much the same for lace knitting patterns.

If you are also a quilter, wool wadding goes nicely on both sides of one of

Was advised by Pat Milne once, if you are cutting blocks from a sheet of foam,
think of the future and make an extra one or two while you are at it.

Unfortunately, after I did that, I have had less time for lace than I would

2009-05-23 Thread mary carey
Hi All,

The last thing my Paternal Grandmother did in this world was to teach me to
crochet (I turned 10 the week she died). Alice always had a number of things
on the go, and supplied many things to local Fetes and was a major inspiration
for me. Not sure of Northern Hemisphere equivalent - ? Fair.

My mother taught me what I wanted to know when I asked and this is important
to a kid. Much of what I learn comes from books after someone has held my
hand while I take the first steps - like the one hour lesson a sister in law
had with me for tatting.

Lace came to me with an interest in Ecclesiastical Stitchery and I did a
Correspondence Course with Rosemary Shepherd - the text of the course was
published as a How to book and is still the best how to book I have seen.

I have attended both a local group and the NSW Guild at irregular intervals
and always like to look at what other people are making. I love Lace Express
Magazine, and although I probably will not work many pieces, look through them
from time to time. It gives an excellent idea of the scope of the Craft.

My as-yet-unfulfilled ambition is to teach one of my Girl Guides to make
lace.

Nest time I speak to my friend Margaret, I will ask her what Anghared (Welsh
name) her daughter is up to now. Margaret's heritage is Italian and her
daughter went to Italy a number of years ago to catalogue the Lace collection

Subject: [lace] Quote of bobbin lace in 1476
 From: tiziana...@gmail.com
 To: lace@arachne.com

 Hello All,
following the thread about origin/history of bobbin and needle lace I think
it could be interesting to mention a quote of bobbin lace in 1476.
In the book Isabella , Beatrice e Alfonso d' Este written by Luigi
Gandini
( not sure about the date of publication, I believe is around the end of
19th century) there is a quote from an inventory of 1476 when Eleonora D'
Aragona , duchess of Ferrara, ordered to some of her dames to make
cordella with piombini the name of the precursors of the fuselli
 (bobbins).

Please, forgive me if this has been already mentioned and I didn't notice
 it.

 Kind Regards
 Tiziana

RE: [lace] website update

2008-10-08 Thread mary carey
Dear Jenny,

Your filet crochet looks OK to me, I do lots (buy yarn by the box, not
by the ball). Filet crochet usually requires to be blocked to look its
best after completion.

You may have an understanding of what blocking is, if not get back to
me. I have a board covered by some batting (used in quilting) and
checked material which makes the process easier. I might as well
describe it briefly - wet the lace in some starch solution and pin into
shape before it dries, leave to dry and you will be surprised with the
difference. I have done some quite large pieces, for Altar frontals,
and have to block them section by section. If I have to do that I use
a spray water bottle to dampen the next section when the first is dry.

Hope this helps. I have a large library of patterns if you want to try more.
