Just curious how many people would come to a bricks and mortar meeting in a

What about at TechRestore or MacAuthority?

Re: [MacGroup] The end of MacGroup

2020-02-04 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
Dan,
I remember the LAUG. I never had a legs but I loved that apple //e. I learned
to program in Basic on it and I also had taken an Adult Ed class through UofL
and worked on a TRS80 but the Apple was much more fun. I had tricked mine out
with two 3.5 inch disk drive and stopped using the 5.25 drives.

I had a friend who was a psychology professor at Michigan State. His area was
the judicial system. He had a list of judges on the schools mainframe and used
his //e at home to interface with that to create mailing labels. He had
programmed in, I believe, fortran to make the interface work.

I really liked the apple // version of Appleworks and missed it dearly after I
got my Mac. I thought it could do many more things better early on than the Mac
version.

Oh well. I am probably on my 7th or 8th Mac now and I love it.

2020-02-04 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
Lee,

Thanks so much for the long ride. I first discovered our little group when you
and Tom Guenthner managed a bulletin board which I accessed with a dial up
modem from my Apple //e. When Apple came out with the Apple //e enhanced model
Tom upgraded my computer.

One of my favorite memories was the group (led by Lee and Tom) building a 60mb
hard drive for group members. You found a box, cables, controller board, and
hard drive the computer shopper and we met at someone’s house and you helped us
put it all together. It cost us about $500 per unit. I used that drive on my
Apple //e. When I got my first Mac I reformatted it and used it with my Mac.

I remember meetings at the Mac Store on Breckinridge Lane - it’s now Simply Mac
and they have moved from that location. We moved to the government center on
Shelbyville Rd. I think at some point the membership dwindled and then you,
Lee, set up this list serve.

To everyone who has ever submitted a question to the group and/or supplied an
answer a heartfelt Thank-you. And to Lee we ALL owe you a huge thanks and a
round of applause for all the time and effort you spent setting up the group
and answering questions.

See you in the could.

Harry

[MacGroup] downloading photos from my iphone, iPad, iCloud etc. to my computer

2020-01-08 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
When I download my photos from iCloud or my iPad or my iPhone they are not full
resolution.

In the past I used imageCapture to download the photos, but for the last year
or more it doesn’t work well - for example, the photos are not in chronological
order and it does not load all the images in the window. Yesterday, I took a
bunch of photos and can’t find them in the image capture window.

I need full resolution photos to edit them in Photoshop.

In iPhoto preferences under iCloud, there is an item “Download Originals to
this Mac: Store original photos and videos on this Mac. Choose this option if
you want to access full-resolution versions of your entire library, even when
off line.”

Thats’s what I have done but it is cumbersome. I wish ImageCapture worked today
like it did a couple of years ago. My guess is they haven’t updated the app to
work with todays OS and iOS.

Does anyone know of an app that does what image capture does but works more
efficiently than the version I have which is 5 years old.

I would love a newer version but can’t find one.

Thanks.

Sorry for the mis communication. my appointment is in Louisville at 11:20. I
mentioned the Y so you would know I’m somewhat familiar with New Albany. I
would have to meet you by 10:50 or after 1 at your office, at the Y, or
somewhere else in New Albany.

Re: [MacGroup] Original Mac team

2019-12-02 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
Thanks Ed.

I’ve been an apple user since the days of the ll/e. I even set up a ll/e lab in
a school where I worked in the early ‘80s.

I have always had Macs. I did get a Compaq computer as a second computer back
in the day because I wanted to learn how to network them. It was never a
primary computer for me but my wife used it for her personal work till she
retired (she was a mainframe computer programmer who worked from home and used
a pc to connect to the mainframe. She thought it would be too confusing to
switch from the work pc to the personal computer if it was a Mac. When she
retired I got her a MacBook pro which she has been using ever since). I took
the hard drive out of the compaq and trashed the computer.

Life is good.

Re: [MacGroup] DropBox

2019-11-27 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
John,

Dropbox stores the files both on your computer and in the cloud. So it’s pretty
much instantaneous. I keep all my data in dropbox and can access it from either
computer or my phone or my iPad.

I store very little data on my computer outside of dropbox.

My macBook Air has a relatively small hard drive so I have attached an external
4t hard drive which I partitioned. One partition is for time machine and one
for Dropbox. So dropbox saves my data on its partition and not on my computer’s
small capacity ssd drive.

Hope this helps.

Harry

Re: [MacGroup] iPhone Security & Safety

2019-11-17 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
After I asked the question I DuckDuckGoed the question and found this:

https://www.imore.com/how-protect-your-sim-card-pin

> How to set up your SIM PIN
> • Go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
> • Tap on Cellular.
> • Locate SIM PIN and tap it.
> • Toggle the SIM PIN to ON.
> • Input your current SIM PIN if it was enabled before.

Before you try it read on:

My SIM PIN switch was off. When I turned it on I had to enter my code (I
thought it wanted the code to unlock the screen on my phone) Well I tried that
three times ( I thought I was typing too quickly and misentering the code) and
poof I lost cell service and was told to contact my provider to get my PUK
code.

Apparently the SIM PIN has a code which you have to know before you can turn on
the switch.

I went to AT on line and started a chat session with Nadia. Nadia sent a
verification code to my wife’s phone (she could have sent it to my email on
file but i’m not sure what email they have on file). I typed that verification
code into the chat window and Nadia sent me an 8 digit code. I had to turn off
my cell phone and then turn it back on and at that point I was asked for my SIM
PIN (i.e., PUK code). I entered the 8 digit number Nadia gave me and then was
told to enter a new code of my choice, which I did and cell service was
restored.

Apparently you SIM CARD comes with a code you have to know before you turn the
switch on and then you have to enter your own code to keep the switch on.

Also, if you turn the SIM PIN switch on, whenever you shut down your phone and
restart it you will have to enter the SIM PIN code to get cell service.

[MacGroup] photo cd

2019-11-13 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I found a foto CD from 1997.

There are thumb nail photos on the cd and there is a folder labeled “High” with
individual photos labeled P1.Z, P2.Z, etc. When I click on any one of them the
description says “unix compressed archive - 1.3 mb.

When I double click on the unix compressed file it creates a file called
P1Z.cpgz with the description is CPGZ archive. When I double click that it
creates a file called unix compressed archive.

Also on the cd is a folder labeled MacWks and inside that folder are three
folders labeled

PhotoWorks 1.0.1 (68K)
PhotoWorks 1.0.1 (Fat)
PhotoWorks 1.0.1 (PPC)

When I double click any one of those I get this message:

You can’t open the application “PW101(68K)” because the Classic
environment is no longer supported.

Any idea how I might open these photos in a form other than thumbnail size
(which I can open and view)

Thanks.

Yes. It is called cTiVo and it resides on my Mac and I can down load shows and
then burn them to dvd with Toast.
I believe it was free. BUT you TiVo must be on your network - either hard wired

I agree. I’ve been using TiVo over the air for about 20 years. I love it. I
have never had cable and do not plan to get cable in the future. I have an
antenna on my roof but there are some pretty good digital indoor antennas out
there - or so I’ve been told.

Good Luck.

[MacGroup] mail not delivered

2019-10-28 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
This evening I sent a message to 100 + high school classmates which I do
periodically.

I received a Mail Delivery System email indicating my email could not be sent
to five of my recipients because

Message
blocked due to spam content in the message. (in reply to end of DATA
   command)

I tried resending but to no avail.

Then just now I sent a message to my cousin and received the same notice from
Mail delivery System.

I sent it twice and received the same result.

THEN

I went to my iPhone and copied the email I wrote from the trash and pasted it
in a new email ON THE iPHONE and sent it successfully.

Any idea what’s happening?

Thanks.

I think you just create a new user with administrative power, then delete the

Others should weigh in on this to be sure or maybe call apple.

[MacGroup] photos and pdfs on my iMac

2019-06-24 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
Recently when people send me pdfs and photos I can open them on my phone no
problem but on my iMac, with pdfs I get this message:

The file x.pdf could not be opened.
It may be damaged or use a file format that
Preview doesn’t recognize.

When I get two or more photos in an email the first opens just fine but the
second only half of it shows up.

I have a Late 2012 iMac running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6 The files open
fine on my slightly newer macbook air running Mojave.

Any thoughts on why this might be happening?

Thanks.

I have a digital antenna on my roof and I’ve heard that you can get inexpensive
very good indoor digital antennas.

How many different cable channels do you use. It might be cheaper to cut the
cable and pay for two or three streaming channels. i get all the local channels
through my antenna and you can get HBO, for instance for $15 a month the last
time I priced it. I would imagine you can get sports channels, etc. too.

check out

[MacGroup] purported call from Apple Support

2019-06-03 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I just received a call on my iPhone from Apple Support, at least the caller id
said Apple Support

I foolishly answered the phone and heard a recorded message that said something
like this: "Your account has been compromised do not use any of your apple
devices till you speak with support. Press 1 to speak with support.”

I did and got a person who asked what I wanted. I said you called me. After a
few more questions he asked what the message said and I told him. He put me on
hold and then the call was disconnected.

How badly have I screwed up?

Thanks.

Re: [MacGroup] Cutting the cable

2019-04-28 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I have an antenna on the roof. The cable runs down the outside of the house and
into the basement and plugs into an amplifier. From the basement I run a two
cables to the outside of the house - one goes through the brick into a
television on the second floor and one goes through the wall to a television on
the third floor. Finally one runs under the floor and then through the floor to
a tv in the living room. All seem to work very well.

[MacGroup] Cutting the cable

2019-04-28 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I ran across this gizmo (LiveWave) that plugs into an outlet and uses your
houses electrical wiring as an antenna to pull in broadcast tv stations. It
negates the need for a rooftop antenna.

I have not tried it but there was some discussion on the list about cutting the
cable.

If anyone tries it please review it here.

[MacGroup] google mail on my MacBook

2019-04-15 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
Recently my google email on my MacBook isn’t working. I can get me google email

When I check the network it says the google server is offline.

My two other accounts (iCloud, UofL) seem to be fine.

Any suggestions?

[MacGroup] wifi connections

2019-04-13 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I am traveling with my MacBook. I am staying in a house with a highspeed wifi
connection with Cox (in San Diego) - actually two wifi sources coming from the
same modem:

2.4 GHz (longer range, slower speed) - 031FB7
5 GHZ (shorter range, faster speed) - 031FBD

I connect to the 5 GHZ wifi and every thing works fine till the computer goes
to sleep. When I wake up the computer it doesn’t automatically connect and I
have to choose the network I want.

When I visit my son in southern Alabama the wifi comes from Century Link and
it’s the same scenario - two different connections through the same modem. When
I connect to the wifi in Alabama and the computer goes to sleep I never have to
reconnect when the computer wakes up.

Why would it do it in one place and not another?

Thanks.

[MacGroup] App wish list

2019-03-20 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I turned on the television yesterday and there was a sci-fi movie playing with
George Clooney. There was no info about the movie on the screen I could have
gone to the guide screen on the TV and figured out the title but wouldn’t if be
great if there was an app for movies like Shazam is for music. Open the app,
press the button and after the app listens to the dialogue it would give you
the name of the movie.

Life would certainly be grand.

Play it again Sam!

[MacGroup] electronic key machines

2019-03-20 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I had occasion to go to a hardware store to have a key made. The clerk took my
key and put it in a slot in the machine. The machine’s display told her what
key blank to use. After she located the blank she put the blank into a second
slot on the machine and pressed start. In seconds my key was ready.

The machine doesn’t have an internal buffing wheel to buff away the metal
shards produced by cutting the key but it does have an external wheel.

Re: [MacGroup] VPN Offer

2019-03-03 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
John,
Don’t know what company this refers to.

There are places I go (Like the Louisville Free Public Library) where I cannot
connect to the internet with VPN turned on.

There are also websites that will not allow me to connect with VPN turned on.

I imagine with your work it shouldn’t be a problem.

When Sherry (my wonderful bride) worked from home she had a token (a counter
that was synced with the mainframe at her work) and when she logged on to work
from home she had to enter the 7 digit number showing on the token- it changed
every minute.

Good luck.

Harry

[MacGroup] Installing Mojave

2019-01-20 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I know this is crazy BUT…I have been having issues with my mac. I have run tech
tool and diskwarrior and the issues continue. I also had TechRestore check out
the machine and the issues continue. I want to wipe the hard drive and install
mojave. I have an external startup drive and I know how to reformat the drive
on my Mac but once I do that, I’m not sure how to get Mojave once I wipe the
drive.

BTW - currently I am running El Capitan - 10.11.6

Thanks.

John a little humor for you to help alleviate your frustration.

A first adopter was asked what he regretted. He replied I would go back in time

pulled out my trusty iPhone, opened my wallet and put the phone next to the
ApplePay gizmo - nothing happened. I couldn’t get it to work.

What do you think is going on?

2018-12-12 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
Thanks Lee.
I was confusing lightning with Thunderbolt since the Thunderbolt port has what
I think is a “lightning iconl”

Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2

According to Apple my MacBook Air has these ports:
Two USB 3 ports (up to 5 Gbps)
Thunderbolt port (up to 10 Gbps)
and
MagSafe 2 power port
SDXC card slot

What cable do you use?

Air Display 3 is $9.99 but Air Display for the Mac is $19.99. Is that what you

Re: [MacGroup] iPad Pro as an external monitor on my MacBook Air

2018-12-11 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
John,

I’m running El Capitan. Do you think Duet will work okay with El Capitan?
Also do you install duet on the iPad? the Mac? Both?
How do you connect the iPad to the Mac? Thunderbolt to USB? Thunderbolt to
Thunderbolt? USB to USB?

I know I would need a dongle for the iPad

I’m only going to connect my iPad to my Macbook Air - no other machines..

I’ll check out Luna too.

Thanks for your help

Harry

[MacGroup] java

2018-12-01 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I got a notice on my computer that a new version of Java was available. I know
this question has come up before but I don’t remember the answer. Should I
install this? The dialogue box said I had an older version installed.

Thanks.

2018-11-27 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
Hello everyone,

Hope you had a wonderful holiday.

I keep getting messages from linked in. They show up in my junk mail.

Sometimes they are from people I know but mostly they are from people I have
never heard of.

I noticed today there is a link to unsubscribe. Is it safe to do so or just
keep ignoring the messages.

Thanks.

Re: [MacGroup] What do you think?

I’m not sure I’m ready for this. I remember a story I read in Boy’s life when I
was a kid (mid 50s). It was about driverless vehicles. My question would be why
do we need them?

I’m just asking!

[MacGroup] creating a cd

2018-11-12 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I tried to create a cd of an album I downloaded from Apple Music. Using Toast
Titanium 10 I was able to drag the tunes to the toast window and burn the cd,
however it wouldn’t play in my cd player. It burned the tunes as mp4.

I converted the tunes to .aiff files, burned them to a cd and the cd would not
play in my cd player.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

[MacGroup] problem with mail and ethernet

2018-10-03 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I have 6 year old iMac running os 10.11.6.

I also use PIA version 81.0.0

I have two issues.

1. I have connected my iMac to my AT modem via my mac’s ethernet port. But
the ethernet functions sporadically. My TiVo is also directly connected to my
modem and the connection at the modem is always green. However on my iMac the
connection at the modem is sometimes green and more often yellow. When the
connection light is yellow I cannot send mail.

2. I also cannot send mail when I have PIA turned on. I’ll click send and the
OUTBOX mailbox show up and the message sits there. After a minute or two I get
this message

I

I have to exit PIA to get the mail to actually be sent.

This happens with my me.com outgoing mail but not with my gmail.com outgoing
mail.

I don’t seem to have any trouble with incoming mail when PIA is turned on.

This occurs whether I am connected using wifi or using ethernet.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.___

Re: [MacGroup] Need help with cord cutting (tv/ cable)

2018-09-09 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
Hi Bill,

I have never had cable. Always had an antenna on the roof of my house. It is
connected to an amplifier (which I purchased from radio shack years ago) and
from there it goes out to 3 TVs.

Each TV has a TiVo box with lifetime service. Two of the TiVos are Roamios
(about 3 years old) and one is an older machine. We record broadcast TV shows
on the TiVo units. With a TiVo stream and a fiber internet you can download
programs you TiVoed to your iPad and take them with you.

Our internet provider is AT (fiber) but we don’t get TV - I guess that’s
Uverse. We, too, have Netflix and Amazon Prime. When cable shows I want to
watch, HBO’s Game of Thrones for example, are being aired, then I subscribe to
HBO Go for the season, then drop the subscription. While watching the latest
season of the program I also check out other series in which I am interested.
For example, while the last season of Game of Thrones was airing for the first
time I also watched the first season of Westworld.

When CBS aired Star Trek Discovery last fall, I subscribed to CBS All Access
for the duration of that program. With all access we were also able to stream
the CBS broadcast series we watch (NCIS) when we were visiting our son in
Alabama.

With the newer TiVos you can stream netflix, amazon prime and some other
streaming sites through your non smart TVs. BluRay dvd players also let you do
this.

I don’t know about sports on cable channels, not my thing, but you can
certainly watch broadcast TV sports with your antenna. I believe, nowadays you
can get inexpensive, in-the-home digital antennas which you connect to your TV.

There is only so much time in the day and I’ll never watch it all, so I pick
and choose the programming I want.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Harry

so if you answer your phone with the Apple Watch does it have a speaker? If
not, don’t you still have to dig your iPhone out of your pocket?

Re: [MacGroup] Apple Pay

2018-06-20 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
John,

This doesn’t tell me how to do it. How does apple pay on my phone connect with
the site from which I am purchasing something.
Also I don’t have an Apple Watch or face recognition and my otterbox case won’t
let me use my fingerprint on my phone. I enter my pass code whenever I use
Applepay in the store.

[MacGroup] Apple Pay

2018-06-20 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I ran a bunch of errands today - 6 stops. I was able to use Apple Pay at all
but one stop.

These folks take Apple Pay:

Trader Joes
Paul’s Fruit Market
Mark’s Hallmark store in Gardiner Lane Shopping Center
Valu Mart
Keith’s Hardware

The one place I went that doesn’t take Apple Pay is Costco.

I always ask about it and this time the cashier told me Costco doesn’t take
Apple Pay because Apple attaches a fee to the transaction.

Don’t know if that’s true or not but thought I would pass it on.

This is problem that started yesterday. Until then mail worked well, so I am
not sure the link applies.

Thanks.

Harry

[MacGroup] Mail not working

2018-05-24 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer

I am sending this email from iCloud and not from Apple Mail on my computer.

Since yesterday I am unable to send email on my computer, iPad, and iPhone
(even if I turn off the wireless connection)

On my phone and iPad I get this message when I try to end an email:

 Cannot Send Mail
The connection to the outgoing server “p49-smtp.mail.me.com” failed
Additional Outgoing Mail Servers can be configured for
 Mail accounts in Settings>Accounts

On my computer I get this message:

Cannot send message using the server iCloud
Connections to the server “p49-smtp.mail.me.com on the default
ports timed out
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or
click Try
Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
    Sending from: Harry Jacobson-Beyer <harr...@me.com>

Then the window with all my mail accounts shows that all are offline.

Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know what's going on.

Thanks.___
