I’ve never had issues using the optical side. I have terminated an Apple TV previous generation with the optical out straight to a Denon AVR 5803 very successfully but that’s a $5K receiver when it was new a few years ago so it better work.:) I’ll have him give me the part number the next

The reason to get an Apple TV 4th gen is to run the apps. Whether that’s the various content apps, netflix or games any number of things that’s the deal with the 4th gen, it’s all about the apps you install. The HDMI port looks like a round cable with a computer type connector on each end

Hi, The Apple TV simply connects with an HDMI cable. Therefore, it should be no problem plugging it into a Samsung or any other TV model for that matter as long as it has HDMI input. It is extremely difficult to plug it into the incorrect port on the back of the TV as the HDMI cable
