Huh? You are either not a biker or you live in the wrong part of the country. I know, not too many bikers get killed on I-395. I lived there myself (Lake Ridge VA). [MBZ] sunroof tools and other items.
Dave, Thanks for the hint regarding the sunroof tools. I'm planing on having the car painted. Some months ago I posted the status of my 350SDL after an encounter with a discharge of sulfur dioxide. The refinery actually paid in full. Any hints on getting a good paint job will be appreciated. I am still getting a low frequency rattle. It occurs only between 700 and 1000 rpm. I did replace the a/c clutch which had a bad bearing. At that time I discovered a leak from the tandem hydraulic pump. All of that is in order and functioning very well. Another problem that developed is the kickdown function. I have 12 volts at the solenoid but have not tested the solenoid. The transmission is about 20,000 miles old. The bowden cable is set with a 1 mm slack. All comments welcome. Constantine
Re: [MBZ] Bike Rider, Loud Pipes
I can only answer from my own experience. I ride very defensively (since an idiot t-boned me coming out of a stop sign in 1976.) I always assume that no one sees me. Even if I make eye contact with the driver at an intersection, I am not seen. Here is my formula: car in an area of danger = reduce speed + left hand on the clutch leve + right hand on the front brake lever + foot positioned over the rear brake lever. Please bear in mind that I live in and ride in an area where the average age of driver is about 85. -- 1977 240D 1983 VW Quantum turbo diesel 5-speed 1972 Honda CB-500K motorcycle http://www.airamericaradio.com/listen

Last fall my sunroof got stuck. My trusted Indy said it needed to {redesigned} Angles as on was broken and they should be swapped as a set. Price was about $425 for parts and $400 for labor. Que? This got garbled, but I take the gist of it to be: Sunroof broken, estimate high. Par for the course, I understand, and that DIY on the popup-type sunroofs is not recommended (unlike the older style). Ours is broken too, and I didn't even try to mess with it (yet). I just managed to finagle it back in position and unplugged the cable to it. -- Jim

Re: [MBZ] PM, fuses, and wheel bearings
Marshall Booth wrote: Irrespective of what the fuses are made of, they become unreliable after about 10 years of use. It's the heating/cooling cycle that causes the fuses to fatigue. I've seen old European-style fuses where you could actually see the metal element sagging from this effect. One of my VWs had a few like that, including the wiper fuse. I didn't take the hint and replace it, and it promptly blew from old age on one dark, rainy night. I kind of like the glass-encased ones, not because of reliability, but because they're easier to install (the non-glass ones come apart if you're not careful) and because they're less likely to burn my fingers if a short causes them to blow immediately when they're inserted. Both kinds seem inferior to the American, blade-style fuses.

Unfortunately, the biker was also looking at the airplanes, but hadn't slowed. He wasn't seriously hurt, fortunately, but his bike was. Maybe if he'd had louder pipes the truck driver would have heard him and sped up? ;)

I can only assume that the half shafts are the same too. I think Rusty carries them for around $400 but better check with him on that. You should probably get new rear wheel bearing kit while you have it down that far. I'm with you. Whether it be on Harleys, Hondas or pickup trucks, loud pipes are just a more abrasive and slightly more mature version of sticking playing cards in your bike spokes- it is about making noise to draw attention to one's self. It has nothing to do with safety. You could pop an engine out of a 240d in the thing. There isn't enough actual metal in that old datsun to hold it back any. the thing would be a screamer :-) ---Robert Rich Thomas wrote: So in my dad's barn is a 70something Datsun wagon that belonged to my grandfather, and when he got sick/died my dad stuck it in the barn where it has sat for 15 or 20 years. I was visiting the other day and dusted it off and looked at it. It is quite good shape body-wise, the interior smells really bad from all the inhabitants over the years. It was running when parked, probably would not be hard to get running again. But that was not really my thought... It is a little front-wheel drive thing, nothing special, but kinda funky in its way. Got me thinking that doing a rat rod job on it might be kinda fun at some point, put some power in it, rear-wheel drive, weld in some frame to hold it all, etc. An old rat rod ricer! Then I got thinking that rather than the standard 350, an old Benz engine/tranny would be kinda cool. Probably not a diesel unless I did one of those Finnish mods to give it stupid power. And it would have to have a boomer sound system and wiper/underneath neon and skulls (or maybe Godzilla heads). And a couple of wings, gotta have wings. The car has a 4 ft track and an 8ft wheelbase, more or less, a sheet of plywood size! Not a lot of room to stick much under the hood, but those older SLs really cram a lot in not much more space, if even. And 190s and such are not a lot bigger. Hmmm... A 6 or an 8, maybe a 5? Ooh! Don't let that one get away, no matter how bad that condition. Datsun 510s are real collector's items with a huge cult following, at least on the West Coast. I rarely see them in Portland (a hotbed of car nuts), but when I do they are always beautifully restored or obviously built up for autocross or other amateur racing events (low-profile tires, roll cage, lightweight seats, etc.).
