Rick I've been using Picasa occasionally since it was created but didn't realise its storage program was accessible publicly. [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car
I think that argument (which goes back a long time) is a waste of breath. I've got a 2003 Ranger - zero electronics failures. My '96 Dodge Dakota had the oil pressure sender fail, cheap easy fix. My '88 GMC - zero electronics failures. My wife's '91 Ford Tempo used to have ignition controller failures every 25,000 miles or so. It was a simple fix, you were supposed to buy a special tool but I modified an 8mm socket to fit. I think the controller was $25 or $30... Everybody says you can't work on cars anymore which is ever so much bunk. Sure you need a SanGauge or VAG-COM but its really just a special wrench. -Curt Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2013 17:22:11 -0400 From: Gerry Archer arche...@embarqmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car Message-ID: 4358D89CC73B456293E2FF9CE93C0BF4@PC466116028214 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1; reply-type=original What's the aftermarket parts situation on Japanese cars, Gary? Which model has the largest installed base? Camry? Accord? Civic? One disturbing factor about new and initially less troublesome cars is the cost of the electronic modules that seem to run everything; engine, transmission, etc., etc. If cheaper aftermarket modules were available for when the car gets a few years older, I'd probably buy a new, trouble free car primarily for the purpose of making out-of-county trips. These old Mercedes are great locally, but a breakdown on a long trip could get very expensive with days in a motel. Best is a very relative concept. I like the Jetta/Passat. A gasser of either will run in the $18-20k range, the TDI Jetta starts around $23k with the Passat about $3k more. My in-laws have a Fusion, I think theirs is a 2008. Its a very good toaster of a car. Boring as all get out but gets you from here to there. If I were wanting toaster transportation I'd probably go with that, for a bit more driving excitement a Jetta/Passat with preference to the TDI. I'm not a good judge of air-conditioning, we so rarely need it. The last couple days commuting its been relatively warm but although the AC works on my 190D I rarely use it, I can handle the heat just fine... -Curt Date: Sat, 31 Aug 2013 15:07:36 -0400 From: Gerry Archer arche...@embarqmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car Message-ID: 4D9CB6EFEF814E8AA5241AC31963D7FA@PC466116028214 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1; reply-type=original Okay, you convinced me. Nothing in the box about a required breakin procedure, and long before the breakin procedure discussion started here. The ceramic pads sometimes work fine and sometimes grab and jerk worse than anything. Brake pressure does not seem to be related. The brakes may be fine, or may be jerky on soft, moderate or hard braking. Very disappointing. Sometimes the jerking is so bad the front tire comes off the ground and it feels like something in the front end could break. Let up and hit the brake again, and it may be smooth, less jerky or bad. very disappointing performance. I am not sure if new rotors, and this breakin procedure would perform correctly or not. I don't think that if I spent the money for rotors that i'd want to spend the $$$ for ceramic pads again. What I do know is that the cheap pads from flaps are very good for normal use. They are dusty, but no jumping, and no ruining rotors. OK, given those parameters, go to your nearest VW dealer and test drive a Passat TDI - you might like it. I don't find the seats quite as comfortable as a Mercedes seat, but my wife can't tell the difference. Otherwise it meets all your requirements, with the cost of parts being an unknown (for me at least). I actually thought the Passat drove better than the new C class MB when I was shopping a couple of years ago. The AC did great today driving around town with a little highway time at 102F. IIRC, there are at least three different seat options (that come with the different trim levels) - should be one that will work for you. We have the middle one - electric drivers seat, manual passengers seat. FYI, we bought a set of Oregon Aero seat cushions for the 182 - they make a HUGE difference in comfort. Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car
From: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com Best is a very relative concept. I like the Jetta/Passat. A gasser of either will run in the $18-20k range, the TDI Jetta starts around $23k with the Passat about $3k more. G: Those are good prices. G: As I mentioned in another email, my son has a Fusion Hybrid, but you can't touch one for $25K around here. That would be a great choice since it's a good solid car that rides well and has comfortable seats. My son averaged 37 mpg between Nashville and Orlando driving 80 mph. I'm not a good judge of air-conditioning, we so rarely need it. The last couple days commuting its been relatively warm but although the AC works on my 190D I rarely use it, I can handle the heat just fine... -Curt G: The Fusion Hybrid A/C could have frozen us out on a 200 mile trip we made. Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car
My take on really good car for long trips would be an S series benz. I drove to Colorado and back this past July 4th week. Covered 1250 miles in 22 hours, all in one sitting. No sore butt, cold air and other than having to stay awake, not too tired after the trip. Got back home to Seattle in 18.79 hours, same route. This was in the 2002 S430. The #1 boy got his 92 300SE back in shape, so it is road worthy. That thing has ICE cold air. A major surprise to me in how quickly nipples become glass cutters in that thing. Comfortable seats that would be great for long trips as well. For a 20 year old car, the passengers must have been tiny chinese dames, as there is no wear on the leather and seats are pretty close to factory plumpness and spring. YMMV, but the benz seems to hold up well if treated relatively well. Quality between the w140 and the w220 is noticeable. Far less oriental cheapness in the older model. Both cars came in well under $20k. Both would be a really nice #2 condition at sale. clay 2002 s430 - Victor, a Stately well tailored chap 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1972 220D - Gump - She was green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Gave her life to save me against a Dame in a SUV POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers On Aug 31, 2013, at 12:07 PM, Gerry Archer wrote: Okay, you convinced me.
