It depends. If you have a yahoo account, Flickr is yahoos photo site. If
you have a google account, Picasa is theirs. They are pretty simple to
use, a couple of mouse clicks and every thing gets uploaded.

Rick

I've been using Picasa occasionally since it was created but didn't realise
its storage program was accessible publicly. Early Picasa was simple and
easy to use, but its upgrades seem to have made it more complex.
Already being a Yahoo member, perhaps I'll try Flickr.
Thanks,

[MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car

2013-08-31 Thread Curt Raymond
I think that argument (which goes back a long time) is a waste of breath. I've
got a 2003 Ranger - zero electronics failures. My '96 Dodge Dakota had the oil
pressure sender fail, cheap easy fix. My '88 GMC - zero electronics failures.
My wife's '91 Ford Tempo used to have ignition controller failures every 25,000
miles or so. It was a simple fix, you were supposed to buy a special tool but I
modified an 8mm socket to fit. I think the controller was $25 or $30...

Everybody says you can't work on cars anymore which is ever so much bunk.
Sure you need a SanGauge or VAG-COM but its really just a special wrench.

What's the aftermarket parts situation on Japanese cars, Gary? Which model
has the largest installed base?  Camry?  Accord?  Civic?
One disturbing factor about new and initially less troublesome cars is the
cost of the electronic modules that seem to run everything; engine,
transmission, etc., etc.  If cheaper aftermarket modules were available for
when the car gets a few years older, I'd probably buy a new, trouble free
car primarily for the purpose of making out-of-county trips.  These old
Mercedes are great locally, but a breakdown on a long trip could get very
expensive with days in a motel.

Thanks Rick,

It occurs to me that all the rear brake work on that truck has been done at a
shop and they've probably put in whatever cheap Chinese thing they would for
any other schmuck. It'll be good for a couple months and then get grabby. Last
time the friction material came loose from the shoe. Its way worse when they're

Curt,
I put Wearever Gold (Advance

really grabby (nearly un-drivable in snow) and the problem I discovered
after I changed the brake shoes was the emergency brake cables were worn

A twin turbo 1000hp 6bt with a triple overdrive for ridiculous low rpm
highway cruising and 50mpg or better is what I had in mind..lol

Why 50 mpg?  It's a diesel, they're not quite as sensitive to
RPM as a gasser.  You can get a solid 25MPG in the truck if you
keep it under 1800 RPM, which is (I've heard) its sweet spot.
But 50?

Also, do remember that at low RPM's the torque out of that
engine is very 'lobey', it could beat your drivetrain to
pieces.

I disagree.  I own nothing but Diesels of many types and every one but the
Mercedes is very sensitive to RPM when efficiency is in mind.   Only the
Benz seems to like to rev and still get great figures.  My Powerstroke will
pull near 22 mpg if you never let it over 2000rpm while towing a 6500 pound
truck.  It gets 16 if you don't.  My 6.2 will pull 25 empty @55mph but run
65 with no OD and it drops dramatically to 15.

Google high mpg Cummins.  There are trucks out there that will go like hell
and are pulling 50+ empty.

Put decent pads on there, usually fixes weird stuff.

Also make sure the axle seals are good -- differential lube on the

My 1962 BMW R69S went back to Germany, and stayed. I sold it to my brother,

then sold it to a local for more than twice what he paid me.

Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car

2013-08-31 Thread Curt Raymond
Best is a very relative concept. I like the Jetta/Passat. A gasser of either
will run in the $18-20k range, the TDI Jetta starts around $23k with the Passat
about $3k more.

My in-laws have a Fusion, I think theirs is a 2008. Its a very good toaster of
a car. Boring as all get out but gets you from here to there. If I were wanting
toaster transportation I'd probably go with that, for a bit more driving
excitement a Jetta/Passat with preference to the TDI.

I'm not a good judge of air-conditioning, we so rarely need it. The last
couple days commuting its been relatively warm but although the AC works on my
190D I rarely use it, I can handle the heat just fine...

2013-08-31 Thread Hendrik and Fay
I have had ATE ceramics on my TE for a few months now and no dramas,
except for a bit of squeal when reversing down the drive.
Also getting a bit of slow braking ABS pulsing but not sure if the pads
are to blame for that.
It's getting close to needing to do a few jobs on the S124, so will
investigate.

Wish I had done these a long time ago.

I broke down and decided to try ceramic pads in the van about a year
and a half ago. Nothing in the box about a required breakin
procedure, and long before the breakin procedure discussion started here.

The ceramic pads sometimes work fine and sometimes grab and jerk worse
than anything. Brake pressure does not seem to be related. The brakes
may be fine, or may be jerky on soft, moderate or hard braking. Very
disappointing. Sometimes the jerking is so bad the front tire comes
off the ground and it feels like something in the front end could break.

Let up and hit the brake again, and it may be smooth, less jerky or bad.

very disappointing performance. I am not sure if new rotors, and this
breakin procedure would perform correctly or not. I don't think that
if I spent the money for rotors that i'd want to spend the $$$ for
ceramic pads again.

What I do know is that the cheap pads from flaps are very good for
normal use. They are dusty, but no jumping, and no ruining rotors.

I am not impressed so far with ceramic pads.

New? Ford Fusion ticks all your boxes for comfort, reliability, and good
climate control. Get the four instead of the V-6, it's plenty powerful
and
easily gets 30mpg on the highway.

I agree completely since my son has a hybrid Fusion. Problem is that I'm
looking for around 40 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg around town. Hybrid
Fusions cost about $10K more than I want to spend. Corollas, which are
selling around here fairly cheaply, get up to 40 mpg on the highway, but I'd
rather pay a little more and get something that's a little heavier and
hopefully safer.

OK, given those parameters, go to your nearest VW dealer and test drive a
Passat TDI - you might like it. I don't find the seats quite as comfortable
as a Mercedes seat, but my wife can't tell the difference. Otherwise it
meets all your requirements, with the cost of parts being an unknown (for
me at least).
I actually thought the Passat drove better than the new C class MB when I
was shopping a couple of years ago.
The AC did great today driving around town with a little highway time at

IIRC, there are at least three different seat options (that come with the
different trim levels) - should be one that will work for you. We have the
middle one - electric drivers seat, manual passengers seat.

FYI, we bought a set of Oregon Aero seat cushions for the 182 - they make a
HUGE difference in comfort. Wife won't fly without hers now.

2013-08-31 Thread Gerry Archer

From: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com

Best is a very relative concept. I like the Jetta/Passat. A gasser of
either will run in the $18-20k range, the TDI Jetta starts around $23k with
the Passat about $3k more.

G: Those are good prices.

My in-laws have a Fusion, I think theirs is a 2008. Its a very good toaster
of a car. Boring as all get out but gets you from here to there. If I were
wanting toaster transportation I'd probably go with that, for a bit more
driving excitement a Jetta/Passat with preference to the TDI.

G: As I mentioned in another email, my son has a Fusion Hybrid, but you
can't touch one for $25K around here. That would be a great choice since
it's a good solid car that rides well and has comfortable seats. My son
averaged 37 mpg between Nashville and Orlando driving 80 mph.

I'm not a good judge of air-conditioning, we so rarely need it. The last
couple days commuting its been relatively warm but although the AC works on
my 190D I rarely use it, I can handle the heat just fine...

-Curt

G: The Fusion Hybrid A/C could have frozen us out on a 200 mile trip we
made.

Thanks,
Gerry

Which is why I didn't recommend the new Dodge Dart. It's a worthy
competitor to the Fusion IMHO and gets closer to 40 mpg on the highway, but
they aren't selling too well and I have my doubts that Chrysler will be
around in five years. I predict that Fiat will bungle their acquisition of
the company, cut their losses just like Daimler did, and the only part of
the company left standing will be Jeep, which'll probably be bought by one
of the Japanese companies (rebadged Land Cruiser as the new Grand
Cherokee?).

You can not give the dang things away. I have a headlight up on CL in
exceptional condition. Not a nibble or bite. Had it on fleabay for a few
months. No interest there either.

Re: [MBZ] RE; New car expensive parts. was: my kinda car

2013-08-31 Thread clay
My take on really good car for long trips would be an S series benz.

I drove to Colorado and back this past July 4th week. Covered 1250 miles in 22
hours, all in one sitting. No sore butt, cold air and other than having to
stay awake, not too tired after the trip. Got back home to Seattle in 18.79
hours, same route. This was in the 2002 S430.

The #1 boy got his 92 300SE back in shape, so it is road worthy. That thing
has ICE cold air. A major surprise to me in how quickly nipples become glass
cutters in that thing. Comfortable seats that would be great for long trips as
well. For a 20 year old car, the passengers must have been tiny chinese dames,
as there is no wear on the leather and seats are pretty close to factory
plumpness and spring.

YMMV, but the benz seems to hold up well if treated relatively well. Quality
between the w140 and the w220 is noticeable. Far less oriental cheapness in
the older model. Both cars came in well under $20k. Both would be a really
nice #2 condition at sale.

Also, what's a SanGauge? Internet turns up nothing related to car repair.

I think that argument (which goes back a long time) is a waste of breath.
I've got a 2003 Ranger - zero electronics failures. My '96 Dodge Dakota had
the oil pressure sender fail, cheap easy fix. My '88 GMC - zero electronics
failures. My wife's '91 Ford Tempo used to have ignition controller failures
every 25,000 miles or so. It was a simple fix, you were supposed to buy a
special tool but I modified an 8mm socket to fit. I think the controller was
 $25 or $30...

I am having a hard time seeing the w116 as a collectors car. There are a
number of good examples, but somehow they miss the bus for sex appeal. The
W126 is much more exciting. Maybe I am seeing too many that have been thrashed
over 30-40 years with little thought for future use.

Re: [MBZ] green/green 72 450SL

2013-08-31 Thread clay
Froggy is not that green on the exterior, thought I suspect my hard top is that
color. Matches the hub caps. Hard to tell with such miserly photographs.
Center console is correct, but should have been repainted to match the rest of
the interior. The addition of wood trim sort of cheapens the car, as it tarts
it up.
