Re: [MBZ] Think the E320 Needed...
3/4 of the way done with this job. Some observations: Having the engine up in the air makes removing the spark plugs easy-peasey - at least on the passenger side. I’ve gotten both mounts swapped and the passenger side spark plugs done. I haven’t lowered the driver’s side down yet and will be doing that side’s plugs next. You definitely have to unbolt the AC compressor to get the driver’s side mount out, but it was amazingly easy. I haven’t put it back yet as the engine is still lifted up, but it’s close to the mounting points right now, so lining everything up once the engine is lowered shouldn’t be an issue. Mounts were definitely worn out. Here’s a picture of the right side mount with a new mount: http://penoff.com/Penoff.com/Photo_dump.html#0 Despite reports to the contrary, the driver’s side wasn’t bad at all. Now that I have the little 16mm offset wrench (needed for both sides) it’s just a matter of breaking loose the top bolt which can be unscrewed by hand for the most part. Lots of gyrations getting the bolt back in, but what I did was get the top bolt and heat shield all lined up and then run the bolt into the top of the mount. Get everything on the top side tightened up while there’s space, then lower the engine down and the bottom bolt hole lines right up. If you do one side at a time the side that’s anchored maintains the alignment, so you’re not moving the engine around trying to get the holes lined up. All in all, not a bad job. Some brute force and fiddly stuff getting to the top bolts on the mounts, but the rest is pretty straightforward. I’m going to head out and finish the plugs on the driver’s side and put everything back together. That will be the end of major work that’s necessary on this car. Only thing left to address is the headliner, which is starting to droop in the back…grrr. -D > On Aug 5, 2017, at 12:55 PM, Kaleb C. Unfortunately the vast majority of Spark EVs were sold in California, and virtually all of the current lease returns are being sold there. For Nissan Leaf, it seems like Nissan Financial really, really likes to sell them in Portland. I've seen off lease cars with Georgia titles sold there. A huge and presumably reliable carrier quoted me $1200 for a car or $2200 for two from Sacramento, so it's probably not worth going 4400 miles in a 14mpg truck unless I can save freight on 3 cars. I've been wondering if I should just go with United Road or subscribe to a load board like Central Dispatch and post it up there with a lowball price and see who bites. [MBZ] My first welding job and the e300 and the SDL
So I when out back to the rusty 95 e300 to harvest the rear exhaust for the green 95 I started driving. After I pulled it and got it in the shop I discovered it was cracked in the same spot as the one it is replacing. I decided to try out the HF 220v welder. I got t welded up but it ain't pretty. See photo. I then when out to the pile of parts to hunt for an axle shaft. I found one that looks right but I suspect it could be for a 126. I won't really know until I get the one off the car. After about an hour of getting the 6 bolts loose from the diff side I removed the big bolt on the outboard side. Normally I hit it a couple of times with a bfh and it pops loose, but I could not seem to locate it so I used the next biggest one but it did no good. So I'm at a stand still till I locate or go get another hammer. I'm afraid I will get it out and the one I have will not be the right one. I really do not think this is a job I want to do out back on the ground. So, if it's not right I may have to look into just buying a new one. Where can you get these? Seemed like there used to be a place that had decent quality decent priced ones. Before I even started this mess I did front and rear pads on the SDL. The first wheel I did was the right rear and one of the pistons was jammed and would not push back. So I pulled a caliper from the pile of parts and put it back together. I did not seem to really loose much of any fluid and did not bleed that caliper. The rest went as normal. After getting it back together I have no brakes at all. It goes to the floor and after working it a bunch it seems to grab a little when it's almost to the floor. So I guess I will have to get a helper to pump the pedal while I bleed the brakes. I am not sure if you can do it alone with a mitivac and I don't have one of those power bleeder deals. IIRC, only the gravity method doesn't work with ABS. You should build one of the pressure bleeders from a small pump-up sprayer. It's cheap and works great. Done. The driver’s side spark plugs were pretty easy, even easier than the passenger side, mainly because having the engine raised up made it possible to get directly on them with a socket and not have to worry about universals or wobbly extensions. AC compressor went right back on, took maybe all of five minutes to get it back in place and the belt and tensioner back to normal. The car runs amazingly smooth now. You can’t even feel the engine at idle. While this wasn’t a small job, it wasn’t bad. Glad that I was able to incorporate the two jobs together, as it made it a lot easier. I still have to change the fuel filter, but I’ll do that tomorrow if I feel like it. I’m pretty sure it’s the original as well. -D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] Wiped up the OM617
Yesterday I picked up a Uhaul van and picked up the rest of the past that came with Allen. Getting the spare engine/trans into the van was a huge PITA due to them not being separated. The very warm weather did not make it any better, and trying to drive an unknown vehicle loaded up with near max weight was entertaining. I was able to lasso a neighbor into assisting in getting the package out of the van and drug across the road and up the driveway. I had to purchase the cheapo harbour fright one ton hoist and a pair of el cheapo appliance moving critter things. I chose the super deluxe steel enforced over the wood. Getting the motor into the van was a chore, as the arm was higher than the door opening. We had to mess about lowering and shifting the thing to get it in, then unhook and hook back with the arm inside. Coming out was less extreme. The motor had tipped over and getting upright was interesting. I was able to get the arm just under the door and tipped the engine over so it would sort of spill out. I then had to make a magic rope hooked to my deck which overhangs the garage door. Two of the cheep chinee ratchet straps and a come along did the trick. Sadly the come along was only 36" worth of cable, so much adjustments were made to get the thing across the street and up the drive to flat ground. All the while the motor is swinging and swaying on the hoist as it gets hung up on every dang pebble and bump. Once on flat land, I slid this 1000# moving dolly under the motor and lower it. First drop was not good, so pump it up and try again. Second drop looked great. Lowered it just right so that the oil pan and the trans pan are both on the dolly. Drop the arm a bit more so the motor settles, and the crap dolly explodes. Cheeppy recycled plastic shatters and the "steel" box support twists and contorts. Wasted $20 on these things. At least I can salvage the casters. At this point we give up and just let it hang on the hoist. Job is "done" so time for beers to cool off. When the sun went lower and temps dropped I grabbed a bottle of Dollar Store LA Amazzzing cleaner and begin scrubbing the accumulated filth off the engine. It took the whole bottle, but on the whole, it looks quite nice. Missing injectors, some throttle rods, hoses and small things. Probably good enough for the guy who wants to toss it into his mudder truck. Re: [MBZ] Wiped up the OM617
Next time, buy some 4x4 lumber and cut pieces that will go across the engine lift. Rotate the engine / trans so you can let the lift down and rest the engine/trans on the legs of the lift while just enough "tension" on the lifting chain [or nylon rope, if you use that instead] to keep the engine upright and centered on the 4x4 cross pieces. If you need more stability for this "load" tie some rope to the top of the engine [what ever you can find that is solid, and to the legs of the hoist using truckers knots to pull it up tight. The whole load will then travel where ever you want to take it using the engine hoist as the "engine dolly".. Tip... sweep the drive to remove any rocks or chips that will cause the wheels to stop rolling... before you start to move the load. If you need to do it "alone" use something to chock the wheels on the engine hoist while you reset the come along for each "pull". I have done this more times than I can count.. suggest, next time.. rent a pickup truck, and back it up to the garage to unload as close as possible. This is why I now own a 12,000 lb fork lift.. ;)) BTDT On Sat, Aug 5, 2017 at 10:19 PM, redghost--- via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Yesterday I picked up a Uhaul van and picked up the rest of the past that > came with Allen. [MBZ] What Idiot...
... decided that the w201 need to have the high side port hidden under all manner of inaccessible hoses and hot things? Neighbor has recently been having me look at his benz cars. I was able to help with the W210 issues that were rather simple. He has a '90 201 that has not had AC for a while and the radio (Becker ) is not making nice sounds out of the speakers. Radio works fine from what I was able to see. It finds stations, switches to WB and plays tapes. Just has crap for sound. Fader was replaced, as was the radio at one time. Never played well since. I removed the fader and gave it some needed contact cleaner. That did not make it notably better sounding. It was too hot to remove the speakers, but that would have required pulling the cluster. As for the AC, I was trying to at least pull a vacuum and see if it would hold. My paws are just too huge to get access to the high side port under all the hoses and hot engine. There was no way to screw on the manifold hose. I had low side, but an hour of poking around just could not line up the hose. Are the cars just meant to have a single charge? I could have tried a vacuum on the low side, and then just charge without knowing if the high would hold. clay ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] 95 E300D W124 Water in Footwell
Right fender liner, stud for holding liner on the outside face of the foot well. Pull the liner and check this area for rust. That is where my '87 wagon rusted through and allows water to get in. I had that patched and it held for about a year, but now it is leaking again. The cowl drain discharges right onto this stud, which eventually (rust never sleeps) will hole the body. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 On August 5, 2017 5:38:08 AM EDT, Dan Penoff via Mercedeswrote: >Eldest son tells me that his driver’s footwell is still filling up with >water after torrential rains. What idiot totaled the car instead of taking it to a dealer and making GM fix it while it had a warranty? Unless it's a flood car and for some reason didn't get a flood label on the title, I just don't get it. My salvage dealer looked at it and said "I smell a rat".
