Never noticed the light on while driving. The 'new' gp's are German, but not Bosch. I'm going to have them all replaced I think. They offered to swap them for a better brand... Re: [MBZ] It's a plot
Up until this morning I have had no problem with it. Everything was as it should be. I would turn the key, the glow plug light would come on, by the time I had my seat belt fastened it would fire right up. Dash light would stay on for about ten seconds, then off until the next start. This morning I did my usual routine, but no start - it just cranked for 20 seconds with nothing. The way the steering wheel was turned I couldn't see the glow plug light was not on. Tried the key a few more times and not a glimmer from the light. I'll put in the relay in the morning and give it a try. Re: [MBZ] Justice served
Here's a Chicago Tribune article on the trial date. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-kass_bd_20jan20,1,2047849.story It seems the lawyer didn't realize that defendants in Chicago don't have the right to keep the judge waiting until the reporters give up and go home. (unless, of course, the defendant is a drunken Chicago cop accused of beating up a 110lb waitress who cut off his booze) So the judge is a Marine, a former cop, and he's really unhappy with a defendant who intentionally showed up late for not one, but two court appearances. And the first time Grodner asked for a continuance to 'find an attorney', then appeared pro se for the 2nd court date. They posted excerpts from the court transcript on blackfive, it's just too funny: http://www.blackfive.net/main/2008/01/anti-military-l.html 22 THE SHERIFF: Mr. Grodner, put your hands 23 behind your back. 24 THE COURT: You were warned once. I got a Page 4 1 message that you were -- you didn't want to come 2 here because you wanted to wait for the press to 3 leave. 4 I don't run my courtroom that way. You 5 have no regard for the Court. Bail is increased to 6 $20,000. Re: [MBZ] It's a plot
Bill, Did the car start? It could be something as simple as the bulb in the dash or it could be the controller itself. Have you checked if there is power at the glow plugs and the dash light? I would check those things as a start. Also check if you get power at one or both poles of the fuse strip. Of course all those are to be done with the key turned to on and then do the checks real quick before the controller (if it is not the problem) times out and turns the power off. That's about all I can think of. Hope some of it helps. The other possibility is that as it turned over 299k miles it started getting vain about hitting the big 30[0] and put a stop to it. For whatever reason, when I got in this morning there was no glow plug light. The strip fuse is good, so I ordered a kit for it. Anything I might be missing here, or tips on putting the new one in? So the plot thickens. The battery is new [within the year], not that that means a whole lot, but it would turn the crank easily. GP's are all new, but three have gone out in a few months and have been replaced. Relay is @$160, relay kit [including 4 bosch gp's] is $5 more. I'd have ordered from Rusty, but I'm working through a local shop. I'll try the relay first - looks like it might be within my limited skill set. Absolutely. The thermostat is top priority. I just need to make time to call Rusty and tell him all that I need to order. Oh, and I would like to start using Mobil 1 with our next change. For the most recent oil change, I used Rotella T just because I didn't know how long the previous batch of oil was in there, and I felt like a fresh batch ought to be run through before I put in the expensive stuff. On Dec. 1, Chicago lawyer Jay Grodner took offense at "Semper Fi" Marine Corps license plates on a black BMW. So the anti-war activist keyed the car. The car's owner, Marine Sgt. Michael McNulty, saw him do it and had him arrested. The police wanted to charge Grodner with a misdemeanor. McNulty held out for a felony charge, which the damage warranted. The prosecutor felt it was a minor case and urged the parties to make a deal, but neither was inclined to do so. Complicating matters was the fact that McNulty was en route to Camp Pendleton for his second deployment to Iraq. He was slated to report Jan. 2. The case was set for Dec. 31. Re: [MBZ] slow starter
Just to let you know that I had a 87 300D that had a failure in the idler belt bearing that pretty much stopped the car. It happened at a signal light and when I tried to restart the car it appeared that the starter was slow. Had it towed home and replaced the starter only to have the same problem. Re: [MBZ] Camshaft Appearance
Camshaft lobes wear at the high point, typically producing flat spots. You will probably have to turn the engine by hand to see the "top" of the lobe well. Scratches or dark marks are not a problem so long as the surface is smooth. You often will see dark sludge on the back (low) side of the lobe on engine with mechanical lifters are there is no pressure on the lobe there. With hydraulic lifters, you only see dark stuff where the lobe isn't pressing down on the lifter (really a tappet on the 602). A pronouced flat spot will be obvious -- there should be a smooth curved shape to the lobe, although they can be rather "pointy" at the tip. Usually they wear on the forward side in rotation, so look (and feel) for an edge there across the lobe. Not usually a problem on the 60x engines, they have plenty of oil up there. A bad lobe will click every time it goes round, while a bad lifter or sticky valve will usually only clack sometimes. You need to switch to synthetic oil and replace the two o-rings on the center "bolt" of the oil filter cover, that should stop your flat lifter that clacks once in a while. Mine went quiet while I was checking for leaks after changing the oil to synthetic, just in a couple minutes of idling! [MBZ] Camshaft Appearance
Okay, here's one of my famous "different" questions. Bear with me: On our 190D 2.5, I was looking into the oil filler hole in the valve cover. As I looked at the lobe of the camshaft that I could most easily see, I noticed that I could see marks on it from wear. They were sort of black marks - or dark anyway. I ran my fingernail across them and I don't think I felt anything. Question is: If I had more engine experience, I would know this, but are the marks indicative of unusual or excessive wear? Or are you pretty much going to see that type of thing normally? The odometer is at about 271k mi. The car runs quite well, and the seller claimed a rebuilt engine and trans. My guess is that's a lie. But the way the car runs, though, it feels like new. Easy starting and has power right away pretty much. Somewhat rough and noisy for the first 5 - 8 seconds after startup though. Oh and there's that troublesome ticking that comes and goes every few seconds. Unfortunately, we can't afford to have the oil tested right now, and I don't know what I'd do with the news anyway. Re: [MBZ] this is nice
Yeah, there's been a lot of talk about pricing in Canada, especially now that our dollars are pretty much on par. There have been several articles in publications, asking why we pay more here, and no one can seem to offer a good reason, other than we put up with it, so want not. I've read articles where higher end cars, such as a Porsche GT3 can cost as much as $30,000 less to buy new and bring in from the US, taxes and all, than buying local. I think it's been said before, in many parts of the world, a mercedes is just a good dependable car, but here, even the lower end models have been marketed as lux items. Once a product gets the reputation, it's pretty much like stamping "For Marine Use" on it. Doesn't matter what it is, the price just doubled. hee hee. Re: [MBZ] valve cover bolts tightening torque
If you know the size of the fastener and the thread you can generally look up the appropriate torque on a chart. If it did not come with your torque wrench, then look on the net. Alternatively, as has been said, just tighten to snug and then check them a couple of times after you have run it a bit to see if they are staying tight. Shouldn't be the sort of thing where there is any real magic to it. Too many variables for accurate torque in a lot of areas anyway - especially with low numbers, I would think. My experience with non MB products is that they often loosen a bit. It's klunky on windows, I think you have to use Citrix or some such software, whereas X11 allowes remote display natively, very easy to mix and match local and remote apps seamlessly, you can secure the remote ones over SSH if you need to, etc. Allan -- 1983 300D 1966 230 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Somehow you would need to convert this comparison to cost per gallon to factor in that only the Smart requires premium fuel. Somehow I think the Smart would end up at the bottom. I'm in Canada. Toyota offer cars almost as good economy, but more space and just more car in general. While advertised starting at 12, I've never seen one for that. Used they sell for more here. And the end product is, in my observation, slower and clunkier than it should be, too. I really detest the fact that every large organization I have to deal with these days seems to run Windows Terminal Server. I lost 20 minutes of my life yesterday at a hospital, for example, waiting for a nurse to update my girlfriend's patient records through a clumsy point-and-click database interface running on some kind of diskless thin client equipment. I could see, reflected in her glasses, how slow the screen was redrawing every time she clicked to go to another window. It doesn't have to be this way, but it's going to get a lot worse before it gets any better. These kind of systems are only going to be installed in more and more places from now on. People think computerized interfaces to cars like Mercedes' Comand and BMW's iDrive are bad now---just wait until they're all built on Microsoft embedded OSs. You wouldn't see a TRS-80 in deployment today, per se, but I've got an old P75 system that runs some modern software with a very light weight X11R6 implementation and using WindowMaker as a light window manager that runs as snappy *feeling wise* as my B&W G3 running Tiger. (OS X 10.4) A company does *not* need Vista on a corporate wide desktop system to be able to perform work functions. As late 1996, 1997, the Sun Microsystems office here in Indianapolis was still using a SparcStation IPX on the receptionist's desk. That's one of the greatest assets of any UNIX based system anyway. It was designed as a mainframe to terminal system. So computation was done server side. Today you can still set up a UNIX environment to run heavy apps on the newest, fastest hardware money can buy and have far older systems running light weight desktop feature sets with light apps running local and make it all look like it's happening on the user desktop easier than a Windows environment. (Note I'm not saying it can't be done on Windows, but I know from exp. that it takes a heck of a lot more work to get it happening than it should on modern hardware with a modern OS, and UNIX was built in the 70's.) Re: [MBZ] OT old Chevettes
Yes, the brakes and exhaust were the only major expenses. Th brake (shoes and rums??) cost roughly triple what my Mercedes pads cost to replace and lasted fewer miles than MB pads. IIRC we had a glove box and door (we had the upgraded coupe model, not the Scooter). The hatchback was neat for hauling junk with the rear seat folded down. All in all, it was 70s high tech at its mundane best. I went to Midas and recall replacing exhaust components several times under warranty. We have tonnes of them running around town here. Lots of guys in them too. You just know, these same guys were driving bugs with tweed jackets 35 years ago. they're just fashion things here for the most part, many share garage space with Land Rovers and big German sedans. Just as it was common to find a Mini sharing a garage with a Roller in London 40 years ago. I think a Smart is fine for what it is, if a little over priced for what you get. Re: [MBZ] this is nice
Few years back, Subaru required premium fuels here too, and it put a lot of buyers off. I hear most now run on regular, other than their "hot" cars. All my cars run on premium, but I don't really mind. Here, they cut the lower grades with ethynol, so you're paying for gas, and yet getting something with less bang for you buck, or less bang per litre anyway. Some stations cut everything, but the one I use cuts there regular by up to 10%, and their mid grade by up to 5%, while premium is not cut at all. Hi, Kaleb et al. 190DT 87, have 2, one bent and one responding to tlc. My experience is probably not too typical, I drive either half asleep or too aggressively and this is aided and abetted by a car that corners as if on rails. That means it stretches from the leading edge of a Horizon's front rim to its back axle. I'd rather drop a VW TDI drivetrain in a Horizon than pay $13k for a 4-2. Interesting to me is that the 4-2 matches the weight of the first car I ever owned, an auto tranny 1488cc 1975 Civic Hatchback. (The Civic's title said 1850lb) The Civic could carry more than 7 cubic feet of stuff behind the back seat, and it held more than 8.7 gallons of fuel. With the back seat folded, I could stick a bicycle in the Civic after removing the front wheel. Try that in a Smart. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT: auto-darkening welding masks
That's similar to what I use. The solar cell directly powers the darkening feature from the light of the arc. Otherwise you need batteries and a light sensor. They work well. They are never totally transparent so you do need light to see through them when not in dark-mode. Working outside in sunshine works fine. -Dave Walton On Feb 7, 2008 9:52 AM, Allan Streib <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Saw this in the latest spam from Northern Tools... > > Any comments on whether this would be OK for "occasional" > non-professional use? > > http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod > uct_6970_200311850_200311850 > > What does it mean that it's "solar" powered -- it will recharge from > the light of the arc? > > > Allan > -- > 1983 300D > 1966 230 > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ > For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Guess you could always swap the front and back ones around to see if it helps. You use the front doors much more than the back anyway. Re: [MBZ] OT old Chevettes
I remember the weak bits being the brakes and exhaust. Mine was subjected to lots of stop and go city driving, which isn't the best for either part. But the engine and tranny would just go forever with nothing more than oil changes once in awhile. GM worked very hard to remind you how little you paid. The thing that always got me was no glovebox door. Reason being, was to keep costs down. lol. If one was fitted to the standards of other interior bits, it wouldn't have used more plastic than a recyclable milk jug and 5 seconds of time to install it. As I said, they constantly wanted to remind you how little you paid, or maybe they were just trying to help promote Japanese cars in that segment at the time. It worked. lol Ed 300E On 07/02/2008, andrew strasfogel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Drove a brand new 1976 Chevette off the lot without even attempting to > bargain with JKJ Motors in Tysons Corner, VA. They are a real fashion thing here, but if you're mostly after good fuel economy, there are cars built as well, that are larger, cheaper and are as just as good on fuel. Re: [MBZ] Transmission saga - not the end yet
Original problem was a jammed kick-down cable. The indy buddy who did the engine transplant knew the cable was worn since he had trouble to hook it up at the tranny. Since the transplant 8 months ago the tranny worked super. Smooth shifts with the shift points controlable. Yes, they made it actually better than when I took it there (or worse by bodging the [?] rebuild). When the cable jammed there was no upshift at all. Now its shifting 1 - 2 - 3 - and no 4th. The indy I am going to is C & J Mercedes Services on Jenetta near Westpark. My Ex took the E300D there and they treated her good and fair. Rich, do you know that shop? Re: [MBZ] Valve adjustment, latex gloves
That's just how I did it. I would leave a little extra clearance knowing that it would get tighter as the locknut was torqued down. This is why the last few went MUCH more quickly for me. Re: [MBZ] this is nice
both those colors are neat. I might opt for the dijon-looking yellow - don't want to be too awfully noticeable. Re: [MBZ] mercedes related!!
Yes, replace your wife with mine. She'll have 'em slamming real fine. Wait - that sounds a bit dirty. The point is if you want a door slammed, my wife is the person to do it. Actually, she probably wouldn't slam them if I actually did want them slammed. Good luck with your doors, Rick.
