Re: [MBZ] Steering position

2015-06-27 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I think that when I learned to drive, the push-pull was called the shuffle,
and was frowned upon. It was too slow and in-efficient. That was when most
cars didn't have power steering, and it seemed that the average was 8 turns
of the steering wheel, lock to lock. I was learning to fly at the same time
I was learning to drive, and since I thought then (and still do) that
flying was much cooler than driving, I usually drive with thumb and a
finger lightly holding the wheel at 9 and gently applying pressure instead
of moving the wheel. This doesn't work so well when parking, but then it
doesn't work well when slipping the 182 either - you adapt to the situation.
I never heard about the airbag breaking arms, but it does sound plausible -
"we'll break your arm to keep you safe!"

Re: [MBZ] Should I buy this?

2015-06-27 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Kleb,

Buy it.

I can probably scrounge up 6 tires for you. I have good tires on
trailers. I'd just have to find some carcasses to put on storage
trailers, or scrap a trailer.

If the engine is truly shot, why not buy a newer bigger MB engine out
of a freightshaker. I doubt anyone wears out the MB engines. THe
V-8 OM??? that DB put in a white in the 70s had a million or 1.5
million miles on it and was still in perfect shape. That engine may
still be laying around. I can ask the soninlaw if they still have
it. They scrapped the white but kept the engine.

If you think of the durability of an OM617 vs the durability of an OM
603 or OM606, then a MB truck engine form the 80s or 90s should be
quite a but more durable than the 70-something V8 truck Diesel.

With more power, you could gear it so it will run highways speeds
without working hard. It could make quite a rollback.

1113 had the lowest HP engine, somehow related to the 13. the 1116
and 1316 had more HP. A 1316 may require a CDL. A truck with a GVW
rated 26,000 lb or less do not require a CDL. 26,001 up require a

I am guessing this one is under 26,000 GVW

Good luck

Should use 11R x 22.5 tires, which are common to all semi tractors and in
good supply,, even as retreads for the drive tires ... about $200 each...
Steer tires should always be virgin rubber, no recap.. so another $350 each
for two of those.

What engine does it use?

Would make a killer rollback car haul truck. I've seen several rollback
beds on Craigslist here for decent price.. Moving cars with a rollback is
almost painless, I've moved cars that didn't even have wheels with a
rollback.. it didn't even blink..

Buy it you need it... really... I'll join the "attaboy chorus" when

I was taught what I think you're calling push-pull by one of the car test

I picked it up shortly before I started driver's education, my teachers, if they
noticed, never mentioned it.
Back then I did it because it was supposed to be more secure than letting go of
the wheel with one hand and crossing your arms over each other.
Bring both hands to the top of the wheel, grasping the wheel in one hand and

I'm pretty sure they taught me 10 and 2 o'clock in driver's ed, but in cockpit

About 25 years ago I read a gripe in Autoweek from a reader who got hit backing
out of a parking spot. He claimed he was holding the top of the wheel in his
left hand while turning his body to look out the back windscreen when the bad
deployed, breaking his arm in multiple places.
Air bags are weaker now, back then they were required to restrain unbelted

[MBZ] DAS 'O' Matic

2015-06-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Got my DAS system connected to the S430 for the first time today. First thing
I did was to run a full scan and look for fault codes.

All the major components (engine, transmission) passed with flying colors and
had no faults. There were a bunch of other systems that had faults, but many
of them were historical and not errors, for things like a lamp going out and
being replaced, and the fault not being cleared.

Because I made all sorts of changes to the D2B (fiber optic) system, I had to
reprogram the adaptations for several systems, including the COMAND as well as
the main CANBUS controller and instrument panel display. Fortunately, the
service bulletin for retrofitting the phone had all the menu entries so I knew
where to go and what adaptations to change.

This probably took me a good 30 minutes to do, but now that it’s done the
instrument panel display shows all the phone information and the voice control
integrates completely, including the phone voice commands.

While it’s a little spooky having a car with this level of electronic
sophistication, having the MB diagnostic software makes it pretty easy to see
what’s going on and understand what or if there’s a problem.

Changed the spark plugs today, too. The back two plugs (four and eight) are a
PITA to get to, but doable. I found one of the plug wires on #5 just hanging,
so one plug in #5 doesn’t appear to have been firing for some time. Thank
goodness for double plugs!

There’s a spark plug boot removal tool that’s about $15 that I snagged off eBay
last week. Boy, what a difference that made. Popped those little buggers
right off.

Can’t say I can tell a difference in how it runs, but I haven’t driven it much
since I did it, so the next few days will tell.

Tomorrow if I drive it much I’m draining and refilling the differential with
Mobil1 gear oil.

Re: [MBZ] OT VOIP apps / usage

2015-06-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Part of the work I do involves looking at traffic to see how secure it is.
There is readily available, open source packet capture software (Wireshark is
the most popular) that can be used to open up pretty much any protocol in a
data stream that isn’t encrypted. VOIP is easy to encrypt, and most is.

However, if it’s not and I can grab the packets coming across your wireless
router, for example, it’s a matter of applying a filter and playing back the
VOIP data stream, and I can hear your conversation as if I was a part of it.

Max,

I don’t do VOIP, other than at work. It’s inherently unsecure depending on how
the traffic is being handled. If I can capture your VOIP packets I can listen
to your conversation.

Sorry.

That’s why I chuckle when people talk about the “heat and humidity” here in
Florida.

Where I grew up in the Midwest it was not uncommon to have it be 90F and
80%-100% humidity. Goshawful weather to work outside in, and far worse than it
is here. The only difference is that we just have the heat for a longer time
than they do.

The one in my S210 worked fine when I bought it.
After I used it 15-20 times it failed, one side tried to close from pop-up while
the other side jammed.
Took me an hour or two to disassemble it far enough to close it so it didn't
whistle.

I don't use pop-up sunroofs much after that, and I'll never pop one up again.

Well, since most of us never bought the MB new, we don't have choices

THat's nice weather for the south in summer.
humidity here is generally in the 80 to 99% range
in summer. with temps in the high 80s and 90s
and some time over 100. 60% is exceedingly low
for summer. That is why I laughed at the
Varithane tech rep a few years ago. He told me
not to put it on under 70º OR over 20% RH. I
told him they obviously would not sell varithane
in most of the continent then.

The documentation for my S430, including Owner's
manual, COMAND manual, and Voice Control totals
over 1,000 pages of text and diagrams. The
COMAND manual is over 400 pages alone.

Thank goodness I like documentation. Made for some good reading.

How the typical consumer operated this stuff
I'll never understand. I have to believe that
about 85% of the features are never used.

Taking a break from swapping spark plugs. Ugh.
75% humidity and high 80s. It's already rained
twice this morning. How I wish for an air
conditioned garageŠ.

When a 72 year old friend of mine was buying a new car and wanted to bluetooth
it to a phone, I got him a BT compatible phone and he made the Nissan dealer set
it all up as part of the purchase deal.
He loves it. He tells the car's communications center to call somebody, and it
mutes the radio and puts the call on the radio speakers. I believe it also
displays the number called on the navigation screen.
