I'm not sure I understand the question, are you saying going from a laptop 2.5 ATA (ie. PATA or IDE) to a desktop SATA? Not always an apples to apples conversion. Many (most?) laptop drives are 5400rpm (some older drives are even 4300) while many (again most?) desktop drives are 7200rpm. Random reads on a 7200rpm drives will be much faster. Try a different resolution, the monitor has native resolutions at which it will look best, if it has to interpolate pixels it'll get fuzzy. If its a 16x9 monitor your old video card may just not be up to the job. On an old mac thats pretty much tough tiddlies. Get whatever is cheaper that you have a port for. 99% of people don't need the extra speed that SATA gives. Pfff, what you really need is to dump Windows entirely... My P4 2.4Ghz 512MB of RAM works just fine with Linux. I don't see the need to do anything other than upgrade the RAM within the next 2 years. RAM, RAM, RAM. Thats what most people need in their computer. My folks just bought a Compaq with Vista that has a mind bending 512MB of RAM. For Christmas I bought them 2GB which has made their slugly POS into a decent machine. I would agree with Curt, as I have a laptop (15 MBP 2.0Ghz C2D, 2G RAM) that has a SATA drive in it, and I don't see a significant difference in access speeds over my former 15 G4 1.8Ghz that used ATA. I do some video field work with this machine, and I saw more of a kick in performance when I dropped a 7200 RPM drive in to replace the stock 5400 RPM drive (both SATA drives). My only thought is that SATA is more prevalent in the market now, so if you're looking for a larger and cheaper drive it will probably be a SATA drive. I just set up a 400G RAID 1 array in a G4 Quicksilver as an NAS machine for backups, and at the time I bought all ATA hardware, including the RAID controller. The mechanisms in 2.5 disks are slow and won't saturate an ATA interface let alone a SATA interface, so changing from ATA to SATA makes little, if any difference. When I do upgrade I just buy the board etc and swap over my hard drive, cd drives etc One other question, Im trying to remember the windows command that brings up the options to check what programs load when it starts up. I have a computer at work that is VERY slow and want to manually select or deselect which programs load at startup. I've bought quite a bit from Tigerdirect. They used to be poor to deal with but now are pretty good. Their prices are reasonable. You can do better from wierd Eddie's internet emporium but the chance of getting scammed is pretty good. I have a 2 year old Samsung 17 that is the best computer monitor I've ever had hands down. Its VERY bright, and has a matte screen so glare is not an issue. I've had to turn the brightness down to something like 35%... Hi Dave, Thanks for putting that parts list info together - it's often tempting to buy a bunch of parts that have good prices but as not very compatible. Sure they work, but it can end up being a Yugo with a Ferrari V12 - where one end is great but limited by the other end. Compatibility is critical to get speed. One question - is SATA the way to go? Everything coming out now is Sata. It uses one cable per device so you don't have to worry about Device ID's or Master/Slave configuration. Even CD/DVD players and tape backups are going Sata. It used to cost a premium, now it's the cheap one. Making a PC into a Tivo-like video recorder is pretty straightforward. Getting them to do HD is right at the limit of the current processing power. You don't need a quad-core, but you do need a dual-core. There is some command that you run that brings up a window that lists everything that loads and you can unselect what you dont want to load. --- Kaleb C. If it yelps just after you install a new program, it's probably just the program. If not, there may be a virus, worm, or trojan mucking about.
