I have lived out in the country for many years, but now live even further
out on a ranch/farm. Why do all farms/ranches

Actually, they don't have to. All you need to do is to rig up a small
light (maybe even a laser pointer) to shine on the photoce

If it's not too high, that's not a problem - it most likely is wired for
that already. If you want it higher or further away, just add wires to move
the switch out of the light housing down to where you can reach it.

I just looked at my bill and I am paying closer to $10 a month for
that light. I told them to remove it. Hope I am not making a mistake.
I did this when I moved here in '93, and never looked back.
If I'd have wanted to live under a streetlight, I'd have
stayed in the city.
Cost was $X/mo here,
No they are charging me for the power to it. All said and done it's
about $10 a month and my yard looks like a parking lot. I'm going to
install several motion activated lights. I wonder if they sell any
that are motion activated but I can also cut them on with a switch
full time if wanted.

Yes, your switch wires just go from a hot to the light after the motion switch.
I guess I was getting screwed by PSO. Yea I get having a switch
before the motion light but I'm talking about a switch I can turn on
to have the lights stay on bypassing the motion sensors.

Easy to do - just put a switch in-line before the light. The motion
detector is in the light - up where it is. The switch is where you put it
then - hopefully where you can reach it. Maybe even inside. Mine at $7/mo.
includes the power - it's before the meter.

This is actually a good deal for the electric co -- they can keep their

Way back in the early days of Rural Electrification, the
electric load in the rural areas dropped to near zero at
When you put your own light up, pay more up front for the lamp, and get LED.
Cheaper to operate and should last longer.

I think the advantage on those lights is a reduced rate.
If you run your own light all night, every night, the power will cost
you more than if you use theirs.
If you don't keep your outside lights on much, you may not save much,
but it likely won't cost you more.

Ours is $7/month. My wife likes to be able to see the skunks as soon or
before they see her when taking the compost out after dark, so we still
have it.

Forget the power company. you did the right thing by telling them to stuff it.
If you want a light, put it on a building, or worst case, put in a
pole or an old windmill tower, then add whatever switches or motion
sensor you want. You could really freak out trespassers by having

Why? It's not like the utility
A: offers a motion sensor option
b: meters the power consumed by the light
___
Yes, you are. Insist on a motion sensor and offer to pay for it.

Motion sensor would be the ideal solution, so it's probably against power
co. policy to install one.

Well that's what I am thinking but since it seems like everyone has one I
thought maybe it was for the cows or something. I can see the point though at
night I can look out and see if anybody is creeping around but with motion

It's so the criminals that come from the city to rob you can see at
night
I would vote for motion lights with on/off manual switch instead.
