Keith Anderson, from Sioux Falls SD, saw and photographed a Tricolored
Heron at Slaughter Slough in Murray Co. (roughly 2 miles east of Lake
Shetek S.P.) on 22-23 April 2017. One photo includes the heron with four

April-like temperatures brought an unusually early surge of waterfowl
into Dakota Co. (and, from eBird reports, elsewhere in southern MN,
especially Southwest). At the west end of Lake Byllesby today (2/19),
Susan and I found 700 Greater White-fronted Geese, hundreds of Canadas,
and a few
There is a huge winter robin roost at the Univ. of St. Thomas, St. Paul
(Ramsey Co.). Birds spend the night in a small grove of conifers at the
west end of the O’Shaughnessy Science Hall on the south side of Summit
Ave., about a block west of Cretin. Sunday evening (1/8), Susan and I
censused
white facial feathering of adult breeding White-faced, but
further details could not be determined due to poor lighting (heavy
overcast with fading light).

Many people reported Snowy Owls from the Vermillion area (Dakota Co.) on
12/31 and 1/1. Susan and I saw three each day, of at least four

yards to the southeast of the platform, feeding on one of the small islands.

(apparent adult) on Long Meadow Lake (from Old Cedar Ave. Bridge
observation platform). It was to the SE near the far shore, diving

This afternoon (Friday, 11 Dec., 2:30 p.m.), from the pedestrian
overpass at Grand and Hardman Ave. in South St. Paul, I watched a
female LTDU in the mostly frozen Mississippi River. I saw it only in
Ramsey Co. but the limited open water extended into Dakota Co. as well.

The very late male Prothonotary Warbler reported earlier today (27
October) by Ruth Hiland was still at the same location at 5:30 p.m.
It was on the N side of the middle of the second boardwalk along the
trail SW from the Old Cedar Ave. Bridge parking lot (Bloomington,
Hennepin Co.). I had
Susan and I watched a female White-winged Scoter in the Mississippi
R. from the Freedom Park overlook, Prescott, WI this afternoon (18
Jan., 3:45 p.m.). It was in both MN and WI waters. This is probably
the same bird (based on facial pattern) that was seen here about 4
weeks ago. The male
Sunday, 9 Nov.: one adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, Lake Calhoun
(also present yesterday, 8 Nov.), and one 2nd or 3rd winter, Lake
Harriet. Both were seen from W shore of lakes, late afternoon, in

Vireo at Murphy-Hanrehan Park, Scott Co., along the pet trail S of

m S of marker #29, but I was unable to see him. Today (20 July) at
07:15 I relocated

Kentucky Warbler at Murphy-Hanrehan Park, Scott Co. He sang
sporadically over a 30-min period (including while foraging on the
forest floor), and appeared to be patrolling the periphery of a

an adult male Harlequin Duck in the Mississippi River at Prescott
WI., specifically out from the public boat launch and parking area
just N of the marina. We watched it swim from the WI side to the MN

On Sat. 17 Nov. there were four female/juvenile White-winged Scoters
at the far E end of Lake Pepin, viewed from the overlook off Hwy 61

Southwest Marsh at Murphy-Hanrehan Park, Scott Co., has rather good
shorebird habitat and although diversity is modest, numbers have been

There is a very visible active Bald Eagle nest at a surprisingly
urban location: just northwest of the Cedar Ave. (77) / Crosstown

Since at least the end of July there have been 3 juvenile Merlins in
the vicinity of 28th Ave. S and 44th St. E., Minneapolis (Hennepin
Co.),
On 24 and 25 June there was a singing male Black-throated Green =20
Warbler at Murphy-Hanrehan Park, Dakota Co. I first found him 200 =20
yards SSE of trail marker #9 on 24 June (morning). By that afternoon =20
he had moved 350 yds. NE, where he remained through 25 June (mid =20
afternoon). This
Mon. afternoon (2 Jan.) there were 3 Iceland Gulls in the roosting
gull flock (~500) east of the power plant at Black Dog L. (Dakota
Co.). Two (1st winter, 3rd winter) have been seen (and photographed)
previously; the third (adult) is a new arrival. The adult appeared to
be nominate
Over the past weekend (11-26, 11-27) gulls at Black Dog Lake (Dakota
Co.) included: adult Lesser Black-backed Gull (probably the same bird
seen occasionally earlier this month at L. Calhoun); adult Franklin's
Gull (ditto); and several Thayer's Gulls (at least 5 on 11-26: 3
adults, 1st 2nd
Sat. morning (12 Nov.) there was a Ross's Goose on Lake Hiawatha,
Minneapolis (Hennepin Co.). At 9 a.m. it was with a large flock of
Canada Geese near the east shore (28th Ave. S and 45th St.).

Saturday 21 May (12:20 p.m.), 1 Northern Mockingbird was just W of
Murphy Lake Blvd (Scott Co. 75), SW corner of Murphy-Hanrehan Park,
roughly 1/2 mile N of 175th St. It was on the roof of the house at
17120 Murphy L. Blvd, then flew to the neighboring house (17180).

At 11:15 a.m. Sun. (8 May) three Cattle Egrets were feeding in a field
just west of U.S. Hwy 52, about 1/4 mile south of 170th St., Dakota Co.
They were not present at 12:45 p.m.

A 1st winter Great Black-backed Gull was with 18 Herring Gulls at the
east end of Black Dog Lake (Dakota Co.) late Sunday afternoon, Jan. 30.
This is presumably the same individual reported sporadically here since
Dec. and is apparently overwintering. I also saw it two weeks ago (16
Jan.) at
Two Lesser Black-backed Gulls (one adult and one 2nd-winter) were
roosting on Lake Calhoun (Hennepin Co.) Friday evening (3 Dec.). The
2nd-winter bird was present from at least 4:00 p.m. to dusk; the adult
probably arrived about 4:30.

An adult Lesser Black-backed Gull was among the roosting gulls at Lake
Calhoun (Hennepin Co.) Sat., 11/27, but was not found the following
evening (11/28). This bird appeared smaller than the adult that was
there a few weeks ago and may be a different bird. A 1st-winter
Glaucous Gull was
On 31 October (4:00-5:00 p.m., overcast) and 2 November (4:50-5:20
p.m., clear) I observed a 1st-winter California Gull among the several
hundred Herring and Ring-billed gulls swimming and roosting on the west
side of Lake Calhoun (Minneapolis). The California Gull was with the
mostly Herring
,
circled overhead, and then departed back to the SW, toward (and probably
crossing) Hwy 77. Although the ibis approached to within 200 yards or less,
we could not see diagnostic features for specific identification. We were
unable to relocate them later.
