[nysbirds-l] Oct 16-17 Overnight Pelagic Has a Few Spots

2022-10-13 Thread Paul Guris
The rescheduled Brooklyn 24-hr overnight pelagic has several spots free
since some couldn't make the new date. The trip is scheduled to leave Sun,
10/16 @ 9:00 PM and return Mon, 10/17 @ 9:00. This is an underexplored time
of year. Though we have still found summer birds like Black-capped Petrel
on a previous October trip it's also a time of year that can be good for
jaegers and with a possibility of either skua. Details can be found at:

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn 24-hr Overnight Pelagic - May 22-23

2022-04-05 Thread Paul Guris
A 24-hour overnight pelagic is scheduled out of Brooklyn for May 22-23.
This is a great time of year to find certain species including South Polar
Skua, Long-tailed Jaeger, Arctic Tern, Leach's Storm-Petrel, and a shot at
seeing both Red and Red-necked Phalaropes in breeding plumage. It's also
the best time of year for Sooty Shearwater in our area. See the list at the
link for other targets.

[nysbirds-l] Jan 8 Brooklyn 8-hr Pelagic

2021-12-05 Thread Paul Guris
The American Princess out of Brooklyn, NY is going to do a nearshore 8-hour
pelagic for birds like Common Murre, Razorbill, Kittiwake, and perhaps
Dovekie as well as gulls and close-up Gannets. This is a great opportunity
for beginners and old hands alike. I plan on going. It's been too long for
me!

[nysbirds-l] Overnight Brooklyn Pelagic Re-Scheduled for Sun evening, Oct 3 - Mon, Oct 4

2021-09-25 Thread Paul Guris
Brooklyn had another weather-out but if they can get enough people to sail
they plan on sailing Sun evening, Oct 3 and be out all day Mon, Oct 4. This
is a great time of year. We've had multiple Black-capped Petrels this late,
there could be more Leach's than Band-rumpeds, and it's a better time for
jaegers than summer. Hope you can make it and support New York pelagic
birding!

[nysbirds-l] Overnight Deep Water Pelagic Trip - Brooklyn, Lvs Sun Evening, 9/26

2021-09-19 Thread Paul Guris
There's still space aboard the American Princess for their scheduled
dedicated birding overnighter out to the deep waters off the Continental
Shelf. I haven't spoken with the captain for a bit but the last time I did
he said the trip was already half full. The trip leaves at 9:00 PM on
Sunday evening, Sep 26. This is a great time of year to be offshore and the
later date increases the likelihood of jaegers, especially Long-tailed, and
possibly Sabine's Gull.

[nysbirds-l] Still Spaces Open for Brooklyn Mega-Pelagic, Sat 9/21 - Sun, 9/22

2019-09-07 Thread Paul Guris
We still have spaces available for the 34-35 hour Brooklyn pelagic
scheduled for 9/21-22. The summer species we search for should still be in
the area but it should be a better time for migration of jaegers, terns,
and phalaropes as well. The trip is scheduled to leave Sat, Sep 21 at 8:00
AM and return Sun, Sep 22 at 6:30 PM. The cost is $360.

The extra long trip allows us time to work the Hudson Canyon waters on the
way out, spend hours in the deep water before dark, and have our normal
full pelagic the next day. This extra time gives us more chances of finding
good birds and other marine life.

As usual people will be allowed to board and pick their sleeping spaces in
the order that they sign up. Sleeping accommodations are benches and
floors, so expect to be camping on the high seas. There is a galley so hot
food will be available.

Go to our website to sign up or contact us for more information if you have
questions. Hope some more of you can make it.

[nysbirds-l] Announcing a 34+ Hour Brooklyn Pelagic on Sat-Sun, Sep 21-22

2019-08-30 Thread Paul Guris
Our long trip from Pt. Pleasant was so successful that we decided to try to
run one for New York on our old favorite the Brooklyn VI. We will be
limiting the trip to fewer people for comfort though we might be willing to
add a few more from the waiting list last minute if the forecast looks like
it’s going to be nice.

The trip is scheduled to leave Sat, Sep 21 at 8:00 AM and return Sun, Sep
22 at 6:30 PM. The cost is $360.

The length of this trip allows us to maximize our time in deep water and
explore multiple areas. Our plan is to explore on our way out, set up a
chum slick which we can bird until dark, have our slick set back up
pre-dawn, and bird until it’s time to come home. The amount of time this
trip gives us our best chance of finding something rare and provide more
chances to observe those species that are more regular.

This time of year should still provide the same species we see in the
summer as we’ve had Black-capped Petrel as late as October and there are
multiple records of White-faced Storm-Petrel for September. The time of
year gives us an increased chance for all 3 species of jaeger, terns,
potentially greater numbers of Leach’s Storm-Petrel, and it could even be a
good time of year to pick up a Sabine’s Gull.

As usual people will be allowed to board and pick their sleeping spaces in
the order that they sign up. Sleeping accommodations are benches and
floors, so expect to be camping on the high seas. There is a galley so hot
food will be available.

Let's see if we can get this trip out!

[nysbirds-l] Rescheduled Brooklyn Pelagic Has 8 Spots for This Sunday, Nov 4

2018-10-31 Thread Paul Guris
The rescheduled pelagic has just 8 spots left if anybody is interested. I
know it's still a few days away but right now the forecast is looking good
with light winds and long seas. If you're interested in signing up or want
more information go to:

Targets on this trip include Manx and Great Shearwaters, Northern Fulmar,
Pomarine and Parasitic Jaeger, Red Phalarope, Black-legged Kittiwake, other
gulls, Gannets, and if we're really, REALLY luck maybe we can dig up a
Great Skua. It's also a good time for cetaceans like Fin, Minke, and
Humpbacked Whales and Common Dolphin since a lot of migrating baitfish are
coming through our area.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Trip Report: 8/20/18 Brooklyn Pelagic

2018-08-26 Thread Paul Guris
The weather started out a bit breezy and bumpy, forcing us to head east
along the beach before turning south to give us a smoother ride. That added
extra travel time but nobody minded not plowing into the weather. We
arrived at jut about first light at our starting point off the edge of the
Continental Shelf roughly 125 nm offshore in well over 6,000 feet of water.

One of the first birds to pass by was a Black-capped Petrel, better for
waking everybody up than a Grande Starbucks with 4 espresso shots and a
couple of No-Doze. Additional Black-capped were seen along with the now
virtually expected Band-rumped and Leach's Storm-Petrels. It's amazing to
think that Black-capped and Band-rumped were once considered ultra-rarities
in our neck of the woods (well, ocean) and now they're considered to be
downright regular since we've been getting out into deeper water than
earlier trips.

After racking up some nice birds we decided to try another place, still
deep but closer to the mouth of Hudson Canyon. This too produced similar
birds but the big one was a light-morph Trindade (formerly Herald) Petrel
that make multiple spins around the boat for several minutes. There's
nothing like the panic a great bird causes on a pelagic!

On our way back in another fun sighting was a Pomarine Jaeger that stayed
ahead of us, climbed up into the sky, and then dropped on a Great
Shearwater. We moved up to it as it sat on the water and began throwing
chum. The bird flew up to the boat giving multiple passes and great photo
ops.

The final tallies for the day are:

Trindade Petrel- 1
Black-capped Petrel- 21
Band-rumped SP- 19
Leach's SP- 23
Wilson's SP- 716
Audubon's Shearwater- 6
Cory's Shearwater- 43
Great Shearwater- 39
Sooty Shearwater- 1
Pomarine Jaeger- 2
Bridled Tern- 2
Red-necked Phalarope- 21

There were also10 Great Black-backed Gulls, 2 Laughing Gulls, and a Common
Tern on the much more inshore homeward bound leg.

A big thanks to leaders Doug Gochfeld, Sean Sime, Andy Guthrie, Shane
Blodgette, Bob Diebold, and late stowaway Tom Johnson. A big, big, BIG
thanks to my wife Anita Guris. Without her help we'd never get these trips
out.

Our next adventure is a 14-hour day trip that has been moved a day to
Sunday, October 28 due to a scheduling conflict. Hope to see you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Summer Overnight Brooklyn Pelagic - Sun, Aug 19 to Mon, Aug 20

2018-06-30 Thread Paul Guris
We are running a trip out of Brooklyn, NY to the deep (over 6,000') waters
beyond the edge of the Continental Shelf. The trip will leave at 9:00 PM
and return at approximately 7:00 PM the next day. The cost is $250 per
person.

Past trips of ours in the Mid-Atlantic region at this time of year have
found great birds like FEA'S PETREL (once), HERALD/TRINDADE PETREL (once),
BLACK-CAPPEP PETREL (multiple trips), BAND-RUMPED and LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS
(most trips), WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL (multiple trips), SOUTH POLAR SKUA
(multiple trips), LONG-TAILED JAEGER (multiple trips), SABINE'S GULL
(once), BRIDLED TERM (multiple trips), and more regular species like
CORY'S, GREAT, and AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS, WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, and
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. We've also found good cetaceans in these deep waters
such as CUVIER'S BEAKED WHALE, several other species of beaked whale, PILOT
WHALE, RISSO'S DOLPHIN, and even STRIPED DOLPHIN.

We will be aboard the approximately 100' long BROOKLYN VI. Our plan is to
head out to the deep waters beyond the edge of the Continental Shelf in the
dark and set out a chum slick. We will spend some time at first light scanning
the storm-petrel flock since this has been our best method for finding
Band-rumped
and Leach's Storm-Petrels. When we feel we've covered the slick well, we'll
work other areas until we head for home. We expect to spend all of our
offshore time in New York waters though it's possible we may also be in New
Jersey waters if water conditions predict that's where the birds should be.

Sleeping conditions are roughly camping style, and the choice of sleeping
space will be determined by the order people signed up. People who sign up
early get first pick of where they wish to sleep. Sleeping bags and ground
pads are the way to go, and people will be sleeping on benches, the cabin
floor, and on the upper deck. We will limit the number of participants so
as not to overcrowd the boat.

See Life Paulagics always provides friendly, helpful, and approachable
leaders for all of our trips. We use radios to get the word of any
sightings around the boat quickly. It is important to us to get the
participants on the birds and make sure they are comfortable with the IDs,
not just create a good trip list.

Be sure to check out our web site for information on how to sign up,
and to review
our policies. If you have any questions or need more information, please
feel free to contact us by e-mail or phone.

Hope to see you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Overnight Pelagic Sun, May 20 - Mon, May 21 Still About a Dozen Short to Go

2018-05-06 Thread Paul Guris
See Life Paulagics is running a spring overnight pelagic trip leaving
Sunday evening, May 20 and returning on Monday, May 21. Targets at this
time of year include Northern Fulmar, Cory's, Great, Sooty (spring is the
time of year for us to find them in our area), and Manx Shearwaters,
Leach's and Wilson's Storm-Petrels, all 3 jaegers, South Polar Skua, Arctic
Tern, and Red and Red-necked Phalaropes. In 2015 we found a Black-capped
Petrel out of Cape May and six South Polar Skuas out of Brooklyn! Spring
seems to be the best time to find South Polar Skua in our area. It's also
prime time for migrant songbirds some of which may land on the boat!

Here are the particulars:
Date: Sun-Mon, May 20-21
Time: 8:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Cost: $250
Boat: Brooklyn VI

The Brooklyn VI is docked at 2200 Emmons Ave. in Brooklyn. It is
comfortable 100' boat with a full walk-around lower deck, birdable upper
deck, and galley where you can get hot food and coffee. Sleeping
arrangements are sleeping bags and ground pads on benches and on the deck.
People select their sleeping spots in the order they signed up so it pays
to sign up early. We hope to be out at the edge of the Continental Shelf
at or even before daybreak to start a chum slick first thing and attract
birds to the boat.

For more information check out our website. If you have questions or wish
to make a reservation, please contact us by email or phone. We hope to see
you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Jan 20 Brooklyn Winter Pelagic

2017-12-15 Thread Paul Guris
It's that time of year again when we load up the sleigh (er, I mean boat)
to chase after Dovekies and other alcids in New York. This trip is your
best bet to find numbers of Dovekies and there are plenty of other target
birds. Here are the trip details:

Date: Sat, Jan 20
Time: 5:30 AM - approx 7:30 PM
Cost: $190
Boat: Brooklyn VI
Leaves: 2200 Emmons Ave, Brooklyn, NY

This is the prime time of year for Dovekie but you need to get far enough
offshore to reach the water temperatures they require for feeding. Other
possible alcids include Atlantic Puffin, Common Murre, Razorbill, and sometimes
even Thick-billed Murre. This is, of course, the trip that found the only
Western Gull ever accepted east of the Mississippi. We've also had a
loggg distance Great Skua on one trip (photo identifiable as a skua
when blown up like crazy) and even Black Guillemot. You never know what
we'll find. We chum along the way to attract Gannets, Fulmars, and gulls
including Black-legged Kittiwake, Lesser Black-backed, Iceland, and
sometimes Glaucous. Fin and Humpbacked Whales are always possible, Common
Dolphins are regular, and we even sometimes see Atlantic White-sided
Dolphins or Harbor Porpoise.

Photography Advice: If you're planning on bringing a long telephoto for
alcids and other more distant birds, be sure to also bring a shorter zoom
lens. Gannets have a 6' wingspan and regularly come very close to the
boat. I've often clipped off wingtips in my pics when using my 300mm
lens. Of course there's always headshots!

If you want make a reservation or need more information, contact us at the
email or phone number below. Hope to see you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Rescheduling Brooklyn Pelagic to Sat, Jan 14

2017-01-06 Thread Paul Guris
Due to a poor looking forecast we are rescheduling the Brooklyn pelagic
trip to next Saturday. This trip was full but we expect at least some
people to drop out so if you hadn't signed up and want to go, let us know.
If you're already signed up please let us know if you can make it and, if
not, whether you would like a refund or a credit. Here are the details:

Date: Sat, Jan 14
Time: 5:00 AM - approx 7:00 PM
Cost: $190
Boat: Brooklyn VI
Leaves: 2200 Emmons Ave, Brooklyn NY

Target alcids for our winter trips include Dovekie, Atlantic Puffin, Common

behind the boat to attract gulls and Gannets, and we usually manage to find
Northern Fulmar, Black-legged Kittiwake, Lesser Black-backed, Iceland, and

we've often had Fin and Humpbacked Whales. Common Dolphins are regular and
sometimes Atlantic White-sided Dolphins make an appearance.

If you like to take pictures we usually get great photo ops for Northern
Gannet coming into the chum. If you're planning on bringing a long

[nysbirds-l] Upcoming Brooklyn Pelagic on Jan. 7

2016-11-29 Thread Paul Guris
See Life Paulagics is running our annual winter pelagic trip on Saturday,
Jan. 7 out of Brooklyn for winter seabirds. We will be searching for
Northern Fulmar, Razorbill, Common Murre, Dovekie, Atlantic Puffin,
Kittiwake, Iceland, Glaucous, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Red Phalarope,
Northern Gannet, whales, dolphins, and anything else we might come across.
Dovekie, in particular, has become a specialty for us on these trips and
we've had some good counts in the past, including a 9,000+ day out of New
York! Less common species we've seen on NY winter pelagics include
Thick-billed Murre, Black Guillemot, and even the only record of Western
Gull for the Atlantic Coast.

Our plan is to head offshore and as soon as possible chum up a flock of
gulls behind us. We'll drag them around all day which in turn should
attract some of our target birds. Fulmars, Kittiwakes, and even Razorbills
are often attracted. The Gannet show can be amazing with birds coming very
close and diving for chum in our wake. If you're going to take photographs
and plan on bringing a 500-600mm lens, we suggest you also bring a shorter
zoom. It can be tough to fit a bird with a 6 foot wingspan into your frame
with a very long lens.

Here are the particulars:

Date: Sat, Jan 7
Time: 5:00 AM - approx 7:00 PM
Cost: $190
Boat: Brooklyn VI

We will be aboard the comfortable 100' Brooklyn VI. The boat has a full
walk-around lower deck, upper deck, heated cabin, and galley where you can
get hot food and drinks. The boat leaves out of Sheepshead Bay in
Brooklyn. We intend to spend our entire time in NY state pelagic waters.

For more information check out our website. If you have questions or wish
to make a reservation, please contact us by email or phone. We hope to see

We hope to see
you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Attempting Re-Schedule of Brooklyn Pelagic to June 12-13

2016-06-05 Thread Paul Guris
Tonight's Brooklyn overnight pelagic has been cancelled due to an ugly
forecast. We are going to reschedule the trip for next Sun-Mon. We'll be
contacting all those who were supposed to sail with us tonight but we
expect we'll need a few more folks to hit our minimum to run.

We just had a very interesting trip out of Delaware yesterday with well
over 100 Leach's Storm-Petrels, 5 shearwater species, several Pomarine
Jaegers, Red-necked Phalaropes, a freshly dead Dovekie and a very live
Puffin! The marine mammals put on a nice show as well. Needless to say
there are a number of us desperately wanting to get offshore again.

The particulars of the trip are:
Leave Sun, June 12 @ 8:00 PM
Return Mon, June 13 @ approx 6:00 PM
Cost is $250
Contact: i...@paulagics.com or 215-234-6805

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Announcing a Brooklyn 8-hour Pelagic on Sat, Jan. 9

2015-12-27 Thread Paul Guris
We are attempting to run a nearshore pelagic out of Brooklyn. We have been
running similar trips out of Belmar, NJ with good success. The shorter
duration makes it a great trip for those who have not yet experienced a
pelagic and want to get their feet wet. Wait. Scratch that last part as a
poor choice of words.

Here are the particulars:

Date: Sat, Jan 9
Time: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Cost: $130
Boat: Brooklyn VI
Leaves: 2200 Emmons Ave, Brooklyn, NY

Past trips out of nearby Belmar, NJ have had success finding Common Murre
and Razorbill, occasionally Dovekie and Atlantic Puffin, and rarely
Thick-billed Murre. Chumming behind the boat brings in gulls and gannets,
and we usually manage to attract Kittiwake, Lesser Black-backed, Iceland,
and sometimes Glaucous Gull, and in some years we have found Little and
Black-headed. If we have the time or if the weather dictates we may also
search jetties along the coast and the islands south of the Verrazano
Bridge for alcids, eiders, and perhaps Harlequin Duck.

If you're a photographer or even just like to snap photos, there are
usually multiple opportunities to photographer Northern Gannets coming up
to the boat and diving into the chum. As a warning to photographers with
large fixed focal length lenses, bring something smaller as well. I have
full frame gannet shots taken at 100mm.

If you want make a reservation or need more information, contact us at the
email or phone number below. Hope to see you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Oct 23-24 Brooklyn Pelagic Still Too Short to Sail

2015-10-14 Thread Paul Guris
We are still short of the number of participants we need to make this a
break even trip. We're so stoked to get out at this time of year that I
and the leaders are willing to pay for our own slots just to get the trip
to sail. Our cutoff date from the captain is next Thursday so we've got
one week to get enough to go!

There is an amazing temperature break out near the tip of the Hudson Canyon
that can be seen on this chart.

http://marine.rutgers.edu/cool/sat_data/show/?file=../../regions/nybight/sst/noaa/2015/img/151012.285.2125.n18.jpg

Tuna are in the area in good numbers which means that there is a lot of
life. A recent fishing / birding trip on a private boat found both Manx
and Audubon's Shearwaters, Red Phalarope, Pomarine Jaeger, as well as other
common species. Our plan is to bird the waters of the Hudson Canyon, some
of the flats outside the canyon where the tuna boats are chumming, and
around any scallop draggers we can find.

This is a highly underexplored time of year in our area and one of the few
trips we ran in the past found North America's second record of Cape Verde
Shearwater! Interestingly we seem to find more nominate Cory's Shearwater
candidates at this time of year as well. Interestingly, both of these
species leave their breeding grounds at around the same time.

The trip is an overnighter running approximately 18 hours, leaving Friday
night at 10:30 PM and returning Saturday afternoon around 4:30 PM. The
cost is $220. The Brooklyn VI is approximately 100' long, can cruise at
17-18 knots, and has a galley so you can get a hot breakfast and lunch.

To sign up or if you have any questions, please call or email us.

[nysbirds-l] Overnight Brooklyn Pelagic Scheduled for May 31-June 1

2015-04-24 Thread Paul Guris
It has been a number of years since there has been an organized pelagic in
New York waters at this time of year. Due to multiple requests (and one or
two threats ... just kidding) we have scheduled an overnight pelagic trip
out of Brooklyn leaving the evening of Sun, May 31 and returning late
afternoon of Mon, June 1. Many of the old 1980s trips sailed out of New
Jersey at this time of year due to the potential variety of birds. This
trip is longer than most at 22 hours due to the distance from anyplace in
New York out to deep waters beyond the Continental Shelf.

Possible targets for this time of year include Northern Fulmar, Cory's
Great, Manx, and Sooty Shearwaters, Red and Red-necked Phalarope, Leach's
and Wilson's Storm-Petrels, South Polar Skua, all 3 jaegers, and Arctic
Tern. It's also a good time to look for cetaceans like Fin, Humpback,
Minke, and Pilot Whales, as well as Risso's, Common and Offshore Bottlenose
Dolphin.

The trip details are:

   - Leave: 8:00 PM on Sun, May 31
   - Return: Approx 6:00 PM on Mon, June 1
   - Cost: $250
   - Boat: Brooklyn VI, Pier #6, 2200 Emmons Ave, Brooklyn, NY
   - Public Transportation: Q Line, Sheepshead Bay Station (approx 0.7
   miles away)

We had an excellent experience with the captain and crew of this boat on
our inaugural trip with them in April. The boat is a fast, stable
platform. It is 110' long, 26' wide, has a cruising speed of 18 knots, and
is licensed for 132 passengers. A full overnight trip for us is about 42
people so there will be room for people to sleep. We'll have 5-6 leaders,
headsets, and chum to help attract, spot, and identify the birds and try to
get everybody on them.

We will be sleeping wherever there is room, which means benches or floor
inside the cabin or on the floor of the upper deck. People will be allowed
to board and select their sleeping space in the order they sign up and
pay. Sign up early for the best selection of sleeping spaces.

For more information or to sign up, email us at i...@paulagics.com or call
215-234-6805. Hope to see you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Pelagic Scheduled for Sat, April 11

2015-02-21 Thread Paul Guris
For our inaugural trip out of Brooklyn, we have scheduled an experimental
trip for Saturday, April 11. This is a time of year with very poor pelagic
coverage in our area, but we have chosen the date to coincide with the
large northbound migration of gulls, Gannets, loons, waterfowl, and
baitfish that typically occur at this time of year.

Target birds we hope to see include Northern Fulmar, Great, Manx, and Sooty
Shearwaters, Red Phalarope, Northern Gannet, Pomarine Jaeger, Black-legged
Kittiwake, and perhaps lingering alcids which at this time may already be
in breeding plumage. Our real hope, and it's definitely a hope, is that we
might find something rare like a Great Skua or even an albatross moving
with this push of birds and bait. With schools of bait moving, it's also a
good time to look for cetaceans like Fin, Humpback, and Minke Whales, as
well as Common and Atlantic White-sided Dolphin.

The trip details are:

   - Leave: 6:00 AM
   - Return: Approx 6:00 PM
   - Cost: $175
   - Boat: Brooklyn VI, Pier #6, 2200 Emmons Ave, Brooklyn, NY
   - Public Transportation: Q Line, Sheepshead Bay Station (approx 0.7
   miles away)
   - We can arrange to shuttle people from the station to the dock with
   their gear.

We're very excited about working with the Brookly VI. The boat is a fast,
stable platform. It is 110' long, 26' wide, has a maximum speed of 27
knots, and is licensed for 132 passengers. A full trip for us is normally
40-50 so that means plenty of room. For those who have sailed with us
aboard the Starstream out of Freeport, this is essentially the same hull
except that it is a bit longer and a little wider. There is a full galley
aboard and a regular cook so real food will be available. We visited the
boat and spoke with the captains and crew this winter. They are friendly,
professional, and are VERY interested in running pelagic birding trips with
us.

For more information or to sign up, email us at i...@paulagics.com or call
215-234-6805. Hope to see you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Upcoming Freeport, NY Pelagic on Sat, Jan 10

2014-12-03 Thread Paul Guris
We have scheduled a pelagic out of Freeport, NY aboard the 100' Starstream
VIII on Saturday, January 10. The trip is scheduled from 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM
and the cost is $185.

Target species include Dovekie, Atlantic Puffin, Razorbill, Common &
Thick-billed Murres, Northern Fulmar, Red Phalarope, Black-legged
Kittiwake, Iceland, Glaucous, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, all of which
have been found on past trips. We also expect to see more common birds
like loons, cormorants, sea ducks, Gannets, and Bonaparte's Gull. Possible
cetaceans we've seen in winter before include Fin, Minke, and Humpback
Whales and Common Dolphin.

We will carry chum to try to keep a flock of gulls behind the boat all
day. These in turn attract other birds that are curious about what’s going
on. Be sure to bring your camera. The Gannets come in so close on most
trips that they can be well photographed even with a short lens or even a
quick point and shoot!

This boat is spacious and stable with a birdable upper decked, heated
cabin, galley, and separate men's and ladies facilities. The captain and
mates are experienced with birding trips, and as always we'll have multiple
leaders to help find and get people on the birds.

To make a reservation or for more information, contact us by phone at
215-234-6805 or e-mail us at i...@paulagics.com.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Sat's Freeport Trip is a Go, Weather looks excellent

2014-01-29 Thread Paul Guris
We now have enough people to make this Saturday's See Life Paulagics
12 hour offshore pelagic out of Freeport, NY a "go". Not only that,
but the current offshore forecast for the area we'll be visiting is
for light winds most of the day and seas running 2-2.5 feet. If that
holds, you can't ask for better conditions at any time of the year and
if winds stay down, conditions should be great for alcid spotting!
There's a good temperature break now set up offshore, the type that we
associate with Dovekies, and a nearshore trip out of nearby Belmar, NJ
in the middle of January found Dovekie, Common Murre, Razorbill,
Kittiwake, Iceland Gull, etc.

The trip cost is $185. The boat sails at 6:00 AM, returning at
roughly 6:00 PM. To make a reservation, contact us by phone at
215-234-6805 or e-mail us at i...@paulagics.com. As long as there is
space, walk-ons are welcome but we can only accept cash then.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Feb. 1 Freeport Pelagic is Scheduled

2014-01-06 Thread Paul Guris
See Life Paulagics has scheduled a 12 hour offshore pelagic out of
Freeport, NY for Saturday, Feb 1 with the Capt. Lou Fleet. Both of
their boats are large, stable, with a big top deck, heated cabin, and
separate men's and ladies facilities. As always we'll have multiple
leaders to help find and get people on the birds.

Dovekie is one of the prime targets on this trip and the right water
temperatures for this species are currently close to shore. We just
had a dozen out of Belmar, NJ within 20 miles or so of land. On an
offshore fishing trip at the end of December out of Cape May we also
saw Dovekies, multiple Fulmars, flocks of Red Phalaropes, Kittiwakes,
and even a very late Great Shearwater! Other birds we often find on
this trip include Atlantic Puffin, Common and Thick-billed Murre,
Razorbill, Glaucous, Iceland, Lesser Black-backed, and Bonaparte's
Gulls, Black-legged Kittiwake, and numbers of Northern Gannets. We
also see nearshore birds on our way out like Common and Red-throated
Loons, all 3 scoters (White-winged tends to be further offshore than
Surf or Black), and other sea ducks.

The trip cost is $185. The boat sails at 6:00 AM, returning at
roughly 6:00 PM. To make a reservation, contact us by phone at
215-234-6805 or e-mail us at i...@paulagics.com.

[nysbirds-l] Nov. 23 Freeport Pelagic Still Needs Participants

2013-10-29 Thread Paul Guris
We've got just a bit over half the people we need to make the Sat, Nov. 23
pelagic trip out of Freeport a "go". Trips at this time of year in our
region have consistently turned up Manx and Great Shearwaters, Red
Phalarope, Kittiwake, and Fulmar. Other good shots include Parasitic and
Pomarine Jaegers, Iceland, Glaucous, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and
migrating waterfowl.

I'll be checking in with the captain to find out what our cut off date will
be if we don't have enough to go in the next week or so. If you didn't see
the prior announcement, here are the details:

Date: Sat, Nov 23
Time: 6:00 AM - approx 6:00 PM

[nysbirds-l] New Freeport Pelagic Scheduled for Sat, Nov 23

2013-10-15 Thread Paul Guris
After some nudging and threats, we've decided to try to get a late autumn
trip out of Freeport on Saturday, November 23. (If this makes you happy,
you can thank Doug Gochfeld.) We've run trips from NY to NJ around this
time of year and it is prime time to look for Manx and Great Shearwaters,
Red Phalarope, Kittiwake, and Fulmar. I'm still hoping that one of these
days we'll find that ever more elusive Great Skua among the gulls and
Gannets we'll be dragging around behind the boat. It's also a good time
for Parasitic and Pomarine Jaegers, the less common gulls like Iceland,
Glaucous, and Lesser Black-backed, and lots of migrating waterfowl like
loons, scoters, cormorants, and the like.

The captain is willing to hold the date for us until we see if we can reach
the minimum needed. As usual we'll run if we can get close to break even.
 Here are the particulars:

Date: Sat, Nov 23
Time: 6:00 AM - approx 6:00 PM
Cost: $185

Our usual plan of attack for this time of year is to to head out early,
chum all the way in and back, and try to drag in as many good birds as
possible. Our maximum distance from shore will be about 50-60 miles, a
little short of the tip of Hudson Canyon.

So now it's up to you (or "ya'll" since I live south of New York) to let us
know if you're interested. Give us a call or drop an email to:

RE:[nysbirds-l] Pelagic trip Freeport Long Island March 2

2013-02-06 Thread Paul Guris
David's got the basics, but if any of you who aren't pelagic veterans have
any specific questions, feel free to drop me an email. We're not running a
trip this winter due to personal reasons, but we're supporting the boat
owner and New York birding community to try to get a trip out this winter.

One question that already came through was about the destination. The boat
will be targeting New York pelagic waters only, most likely heading in the
direction of the Hudson Shelf Valley. This is an underwater feature that
is the old Hudson River valley when our continent was higher and drier. It
extends just offshore of the Raritan Bay and on all the way out to the
Hudson Canyon along the Continental Shelf. The trip will probably get
40-50 miles from land.

Based on previous trips, birds that are a good shot on this include
Atlantic Puffin, Razorbill, Common Murre, Dovekie, Black-legged Kittiwake,
Glaucous, Iceland, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Northern Fulmar, and Red
Phalarope. Chumming along the way usually creates a nice gull and Gannet
show that causes photographers to kill many, many pixels.

That probably covers the basics, but as I said you can feel free to contact
me with any questions.

[nysbirds-l] Results of 9/16 Freeport Pelagic

2012-09-18 Thread Paul Guris
See Life Paulagics ran a 16-hour trip out to the deep waters in the Hudson
Canyon on Sunday, September 16. The trip left at 12:30 AM and we had a
very comfortable overnight ride on the 100' long Starstream VIII. While no
rarities were found, birders had excellent looks at good numbers of GREAT
SHEARWATERS, drive right up looks at CORY'S SHEARWATERS and RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES, and POMARINE JAEGERS that flew right over the boat. Several
landbirds were seen on the trip, including a NORTHERN FLICKER and a female
type PURPLE FINCH. At least one warbler was seen but went unidentified.

Mammals were interesting as well. Two young HUMPBACKED WHALES were seen,
and one breached for the crowd repeatedly. What a show! For me, it was
the highlight of the trip. I've never seen a whale breach that many times
or that close to the boat. COMMON DOLPHINS rode the wake early in the
morning and a small pod of ATLANTIC BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN were seen working
behind a trawler. We also had a nice showing of bats. We found 1 RED BAT
and 4 unidentified to species. I've actually seen bats offshore before,
but never that many.

Here's a tally of the birds seen offshore:

Common Loon1
Cory's Shearwater 5
Great Shearwater 350+
Audubon's Shearwater 4 (all pre-dawn)
Wilson's Storm-Petrel175
Leach's Storm-Petrel 1
Red-necked Phalarope 3
Herring Gull 33
Lesser Black-backed Gull 3
Great Black-backed Gull2
gull sp. 2
Black Tern 1
Common Tern1
Pomarine Jaeger3
Parasitic Jaeger 1
jaeger sp. 1
Northern Flicker 1
Purple Finch 1
passerine sp. 1

Common Dolphin40
Bottlenose Dolphin10
Humpbacked Whale 2
Red Bat1
bat sp.4

We'll be working on our future trip dates soon, but expect a 12 hour
offshore trip in Jan-Feb to look for alcids like Dovekie, Puffin, Common
Murre, and Razorbill. These offshore trips can also produce Northern
Fulmar and Red Phalarope, as well as Kittiwakes, a great Gannet show, and
uncommon gulls like Iceland and Glaucous. Hopefully we'll see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Sep. 16 Freeport Pelagic Nearly Full

2012-08-06 Thread Paul Guris
The 16-hour pelagic out of Freeport on Sun, September 16 is nearly full.
Registration is restricted for this trip since we are leaving at 12:30 AM
and we want to make sure people have room to sleep. At this time we only
have 4 spaces left.

Our planned itinerary is to sail out to the deep waters at or beyond the
Continental Shelf edge and start chumming. On multiple trips in the
Mid-Atlantic we've found that this time of day and the heavy use of chum
are the best way to find LEACH'S, BAND-RUMPED, and even WHITE-FACED
STORM-PETRELS in our area. It seems that the Leach's and Band-rumpeds in
particular feed nocturnally so finding them later in the day means having
to push them up off of the water or come across one as it travels around.
In addition to storm-petrels, birds that occur regularly at this time of
year include BRIDLED TERN, AUDUBON'S, CORY'S, and GREAT SHEARWATER, and
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. Less common but still somewhat regularly occurring
species include SOUTH POLAR SKUA, LONG-TAILED JAEGER (usually juveniles),
and ARCTIC TERN. On one trip out of Delaware we even found an adult
SABINE'S GULL. We expect to return around 4:30 PM.

We will once again be aboard the 90' Capt. Lou VII. This is a wide,
comfortable boat with a covered upper deck which is great for sleeping
outdoors. Sleeping accommodations consist of benches and the floor, with
people being allowed to select their sleeping spot in the order that they
paid for the trip. The cost of the trip is $230. If you are interested
or have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Announcing Overnight Freeport Pelagic on Sun, Sep 16

2012-07-04 Thread Paul Guris
By popular request, See Life Paulagics will be running an overnight pelagic
trip out of Freeport, NY. We will be leaving at 12:30 AM on Sunday,
September 16 and returning around 4:30 PM. We will be aboard the Capt. Lou
VII that we've used before. The cost of the trip is $230. Due to this
being an overnight trip, our maximum is 40 people, about 15 lower than our
normal daytime trips on this boat. Sleeping accommodations will be benches
and floor, with people being allowed to select their sleeping spot in the
order that they paid.

Past trips in the Mid-Atlantic we've run at this time of year have found
great birds like WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL, BAND-RUMPED STORM-PETREL,
LEACH'S STORM-PETREL, SOUTH POLAR SKUA, LONG-TAILED JAEGER, BRIDLED TERN,
ARCTIC TERN, and even SABINE'S GULL. Recently a FEA'S PETREL was sighted
in New York waters. More regular species include AUDUBON'S, CORY'S, and
GREAT SHEARWATER, WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, POMARINE JAEGER, and RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE. This can be a good time for cetaceans as well with SOWERBY'S
BEAKED WHALE having just been reported off New York.

Our tentative plan (all plans are tentative at sea) is to head out to the
deep waters at or beyond the edge of the Continental Shelf. We expect to
arrive fairly close to dawn and immediately start chumming. We will work
the chum slick early, scanning the storm-petrels. In our experience our
best chance for finding Band-rumped and Leach's Storm-Petrels is in these
very early hours. Later we will move down the slick and then search other
offshore areas before returning home. The exact area we choose to start
will depend upon sea surface temperatures and conditions, but we will stay
within New York state waters.

See Life Paulagics always provides an appropriate number of friendly,
helpful, and approachable leaders for all of our trips. We use radios with
headsets to get the word of any sightings around the boat quickly. It is
important to us to get the participants on the birds and make sure they are
comfortable with the IDs, not just create a big trip list.

Be sure to check out our web site for information on how to sign up, and to
review our policies. If you have any questions or need more information,
please feel free to contact us by e-mail or phone.

Hope to see you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Jan. 28 Freeport Pelagic Results - Record Common Murre Count!

2012-01-30 Thread Paul Guris
Saturday’s trip out of Freeport, NY was a big success with both great
weather and great birds. Seas were running about 2 feet with winds less
than 15 knots for most of the day, eventually building only up to 3 feet.
The winds and waves started to pick up quite a bit in the afternoon as
forecast, but we had planned our route to make sure we put this on our tail
so the ride was comfortable all day.

On the way out, before we reached the inlet, I thought I spotted a “BLACK”
BRANT, a subspecies from the West Coast. I took some long distance Hail
Mary photographs and sure enough that’s what it was. We turned around to
try to find it but it must have wandered into the mass of its eastern
cousins and blended in with the crowd. If you’re birding the area, check
the Brant flocks.

Once we cleared the inlet we quickly began finding numbers of RAZORBILLS.
They seemed a bit skittish and didn’t allow real close approach, but we
often had several small flocks in the air at once and there were plenty of
birds to study. Ditto for the return trip with streams of birds very close
to the beach. Some of their nervousness might be explained by a PEREGRINE
FALCON we found about a mile or so offshore. We’ve had good numbers of this
species in the past but our count of 481 was exceptional.

Further offshore we started to pick up COMMON MURRES, mostly in ones and
twos. With the calm seas they were visible from a long way off. We
destroyed our previous record (which I believe was also a New York state
record) of 49 birds and came up with a final total of 86. Unlike other
years nearly all of them were in basic plumage. Were these mostly young
birds? We don’t know, but it’s one of those things that keep pelagic trips
interesting.

We got to about 16 miles offshore. We picked up some DOVEKIES in these
more distant waters, mostly birds in flight though we had one sitting on
the water for a little bit. It is unusual to have this species this close
to shore on our January trips, but water temperatures are much higher than
usual and I think they are finding food closer than they normally do.

Throughout the day we were given a good show by the BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKES, and many pixels were killed by the photographers on this
dynamic little gull species. An amazing sight was watching one that had
grabbed a piece of our beef suet chum getting dragged across the water by a
Herring Gull that had grabbed the other end. Nearly all the birds were
adults with just one 1st cycle bird making a brief appearance. The chum at
the back of the boat also pulled in two ICELAND GULLS, though they didn’t
stay with us long, and the usual NORTHERN GANNET show which also caused the
filling of photographers’ cards.

All in all, it was a great day to be at sea. Here are the totals from
outside of the inlet:

Long-tailed Duck- 225+

Common Eider- 250+

Surf Scoter - 2

White-winged Scoter - 8

Black Scoter- 3

Surf/Black Scoter - 32

Red-breasted Merganser - 40

Red-throated Loon - 23

Common Loon - 26

Northern Gannet - 200+

Peregrine - 1

BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE - 29 (incl. a single 1st-basic)

Bonaparte's Gull- 12

American Herring Gull - 700

ICELAND GULL- 2 (ad and 1st-basic)

Great Black-backed Gull - 75

DOVEKIE - 12

COMMON MURRE- 86 (3 breeding, 1 heavy molt)

RAZORBILL - 481 (incl. one bird well inside the inlet)

large alcid sp. - 52

Harbor Porpoise - 4+

Short-beaked Common Dolphin - 5+

dolphin sp. - 25+

whale sp. - 3

(spouts looked Fin Whale like, consistent with elusive behavior)

And here are a few notable birds from inside the Jones inlet and along the
Loop boat channel.

BLACK BRANT - 1 (photographed, details to NYSARC)

HARLEQUIN DUCK - 3

Double-crested Cormorant - 11

Great Cormorant - 1

Great Blue Heron - 21

Peregrine Falcon - 2

We currently do not have any trips scheduled for Freeport this year, but
several people aboard have requested that we try to run a few more for
2012. We’ll talk to the captain to see if we can pull something off,
perhaps in early September for summer species like White-faced, Leach’s,
and Band-rumped Storm-Petrels, Bridled Terns, Long-tailed Jaegers, etc. and
maybe a November trip which produced birds like Red Phalarope, Northern
Fulmar, and good numbers of Manx and Great Shearwaters out of Delaware this
year. Stay tuned!

perhaps in early September for summer species like White-faced, Leach’s,
and Band-rumped Storm-Petrels, Bridled Terns, Long-tailed Jaegers, etc. and
maybe a November trip which produced birds like Red Phalarope, Northern
Fulmar, and good numbers of Manx and Great Shearwaters out of Delaware this
year. Stay tuned!

[nysbirds-l] Forecast and Photos for Jan. 28 Freeport Pelagic

2012-01-25 Thread Paul Guris
We've got enough people signed up to go and the forecast right now looks
fantastic. They're calling for winds at 5-10 and seas at 2 feet. That's a
great marine forecast even for the middle of summer! The trip runs out of
Freeport from 8:00-4:00 and costs $130. We have a weather date of Sunday,
Jan. 29 but right now it doesn't look like we'll need it. Contact us if
you need more information.

Calm conditions make it much easier to find sitting alcids so the flat
forecast is welcome. Warm water continues, and so far has kept numbers of
Dovekies unusually close to the coast with dozens only 10-12 miles offshore
last weekend. Hopefully they'll still be around. Small numbers of
Kittiwakes are out there, and chumming always has the chance of bringing in
Iceland, Glaucous, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls. And as we've found at
this time of year, Common Murres and Razorbills have been regular. Several
past trips have also found Thick-billed Murre and even Black Guillemot.

If any of you are interested in going, you might want to check out the
photos up on the Paulagic Birding Facebook page so you can prepare for some
of the species we hope to find.

[nysbirds-l] Jan.28th (Weather Date 29th) Re-scheduled Freeport Pelagic

2012-01-18 Thread Paul Guris
After our Jan. 14th pelagic out of Freeport was weathered out, I asked the
captain if we could tentatively re-schedule the trip for Jan. 28 and he
said yes. With those people from the cancelled trip who have already said
"yes", we need about another dozen or so to make the trip sail.

We did get out on Sunday from Belmar and covered similar waters (but in NJ
rather than the NY waters we stay in from Freeport)out to just 11-12
miles. Highlights of the trip include 40 Dovekies, 5 Common Murres, 55
Razorbills, several Kittiwakes, an Iceland Gull, a Lesser Black-backed
Gull, and a couple of Fin Whales. All alcid counts were probably on the
low side due to breezy conditions. Full trip results can be found at:
http://www.facebook.com/notes/paulagic-birding/trip-results-belmar-nj-jan-15-2012/147624872020234

Photos from the trip can be found at:
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.147667368682651.30046.13181671988=1=bf05dc9e1f

Because of the weather patterns this year, we've decided to add a mandatory
weather date. Here's how it will work. If the weather looks decent, we'll
sail on the 28th. If we have to cancel that date, we'll sail on the 29th.
Anybody who can't make the 29th will not be entitled to a refund, but as
long as we have enough people aboard to cover our costs we would issue
refunds or partial refunds to those who tell us UP FRONT that they can't do
the weather date.

Here are the trip details:

   - Date: Sat, Jan 28 (weather date Sun, Jan 29)
   - Departs: 8:00 AM
   - Returns: approximately 4:00 PM
   - Cost: $130 (includes tip for the mates)
   - Boat: Captain Lou VII or Starstream VIII
   - Location: Freeport, Long Island, NY

Further information can be found on our web site at www.paulagics.com. If
anybody has further questions, feel free to drop us a line.

[nysbirds-l] Alcids in NJ & NY from Belmar, NJ Mackerel Fishing Boat

2012-01-08 Thread Paul Guris
Today I boarded a Mackerel fishing trip out of Belmar with my brother Steve
and birder Marty Dellwo. We first moved north and fished in NJ pelagic
waters out to about a dozen miles. Fishing was OK, but the Capt. decided
to move towards a pack of fish off NY, and we worked an area a mere 4-6
miles off the beach. Maybe somebody can identify where we were from the
photos I posted on the Paulagics Birding Facebook page? The link to the
gallery is:

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.140871612695560.28753.13181671988=1=f7080e96d0

One of the big highlights were 10 DOVEKIES within a dozen or so miles of
shore. The water out there is still warm (well, by Jan. standards for the
area) and so Dovekies don't seem to be completely pushed farther offshore.
7 COMMON MURRES were not at all unexpected.

Here are the results for the species I tabulated:
Common Loon - 15+
Northern Gannet - 100+
Great Blue Heron - 1 (about a dozen miles offshore)
Black-legged Kittiwake - 8 (5 NJ, 3 NY)
Dovekie - 10 (4 NJ, 6 NY)
Common Murre - 7 (3 NJ, 4 NY)
murre sp - 4
Razorbill - 34 (22 NJ, 12 NY)

Be sure to check out the photo gallery for this trip. Photo opportunities
aren't the best from a fishing boat, but there's some identifiable stuff.

We are running trips to these same waters next weekend from Freeport, NY on
Sat. and from Belmar, NJ on Sun. Hope to see some of you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Jan 14 Freeport Pelagic Needs 9 More People To Go

2012-01-03 Thread Paul Guris
Sign-ups are running behind this year as compared to last and we're still
short of having enough to go. There have been a number of good alcid
reports throughout the Mid-Atlantic. The warmer than usual waters also
mean that some species like Puffin and Dovekie that are usually more
restricted to further offshore waters are on trips might be in closer.
Some years back we have found both species on 8 hour trips in this area in
December, when the water temps were similar to what we're seeing now.

If you're interested in going please let us know by the weekend so we know
if we can go or have to pull the plug. Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Announcing Sat, Jan 14 8-hour Pelagic Out Of Freeport, NY

2011-12-05 Thread Paul Guris
We are running our now annual nearshore pelagic in New York waters on
Saturday, January 14. We'll again be working with the Capt. Lou Fleet that
that we've used in the past. The boat is comfortable with a birdable top
deck, heated cabin, and separate men's and ladies facilities. As always
we'll have plenty of leaders to help spot, identify, and get people on the
birds.

The waters we're targeting have consistently produced Common Murre, often
literally by the dozen. In addition some trips have found Thick-billed
Murre, Black Guillemot, and Atlantic Puffin those these 3 species are much
less frequent. We've also found large numbers of Razorbills, sometimes
numbering in the hundreds. We chum as we go to attract a gull flock and
this has brought in Bonaparte's, Glaucous, Iceland, and Lesser Black-backed
Gulls, Black-legged Kittiwake, and Northern Gannet. We've even checked out
the Jones Inlet area on the way back in to find Common Eider, Harlequin
Duck, and other sea ducks.

The trip cost is $130, and the boat sails at 8:00 AM, returning at roughly
4:00 PM. To make a reservation, go to our web site, contact us by phone,
or e-mail us at i...@paulagics.com.

For bird ID preparation you might check out "Paulagic Birding" on
Facebook. We will be putting photos of birds this trip is targeting so
people can study them. There is already a set of photos from our Nov. trip
out of Delaware showing Bonaparte's Gulls, Kittiwakes, various Gannet
plumages, and other species.

Hope to see you aboard.

we'll have plenty of leaders to help spot, identify, and get people on the

For bird ID preparation you might check out Paulagic Birding on
Facebook. We will be putting photos of birds this trip is targeting so
people can study them. There is already a set of photos from our Nov. trip
out of Delaware showing Bonaparte's Gulls, Kittiwakes, various Gannet
plumages, and other species.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Results of Sun, 3/27 Freeport Pelagic

2011-03-30 Thread Paul Guris
See Life Paulagics ran a rescheduled NYSOA / NYSYBC pelagic trip out of
Freeport on Sunday. Our course took us out a few miles, then west towards
Sandy Hook (but still within NYSARC defined NY pelagic boundaries), offshore
in a southeastward direction to about 25 miles out, and back into port.
Highlights included hundreds of RAZORBILLS and unidentified alcids, 2 COMMON
MURRES that were unfortunately quick flybys, a 2nd/3rd cycle GLAUCOUS GULL
that followed the boat for a half an hour, a prob. 2nd cycle ICELAND GULL
that followed the boat for several hours, multiple LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS, and 6 HARLEQUIN DUCKS at the jetty on the west side of Jones Inlet.
The final tally for the day, which is a compilation of what the leaders saw,
is:

Brant 1
Harlequin Duck 6
Surf Scoter40+
White-winged Scoter 7
Black Scoter 20
Surf/Black Scoter 28
Long-tailed Duck4
Red-breasted Merganser 7
Red-throated Loon 33
Common Loon50+
Northern Gannet 250 (primarily adults)
Bonaparte's Gull 25
Ring-billed Gull2
Herring Gull 925
Iceland Gull4
Lesser Black-backed Gull8
Glaucous Gull 1
Great Black-backed Gull 215
Common Murre2
Razorbill 230
large alcid sp.90
Fin Whale 1

Both Common Murres were seen in flight by at least two experienced
observers. Details to be submitted to NYSARC. The majority of Razorbills
and unidentified large alcids (most likely Razorbills as well) were seen in
one stretch about 3-4 miles offshore.

I'd like to thank NYSOA and the New York State Young Birders Club for
co-sponsoring this trip. If you aren't a member of NYSOA or aren't familiar
with the NYSYBC, I recommend you visit their web sites for more information
on these excellent organizations:

http://www.nysoa.org/
http://www.nysyoungbirders.org/

I'd also like to especially thank the cadre of NYSYBC "chum monkeys". No,
this is not a derogatory term, and in fact the proper and consistent
delivery of chum is what kept our uncommon gulls right at the back of the
boat for stellar views and fantastic photographic opportunities. The
Gannets and the two Razorbills that flew in to check out the gull action
were a bonus. Our chummers were:

Hope Batcheller
Jacob Drucker
Lila Fried
Nathaniel Hernandez

I'd also like to thank my leaders Angus Wilson, Dick Veit, Andy Guthrie,
Doug Gochfeld, and Tom Reed for a great job of finding the birds and helping
us get as many people as possible on them.

Thanks to all for participating and we hope to see you aboard next trip.

[nysbirds-l] Just Scheduled - March 27 8-hour Freeport Pelagic

2011-02-13 Thread Paul Guris
Today's trip with NYSOA and the New York State Young Birders Club was
unfortunately weathered out due to high winds and bad seas. With so many
people interested in the trip, we are attempting to re-schedule it for
Sunday, March 27.

This has been an amazing year for alcids in our area, with excellent counts
of Common Murre and Razorbill, and Thick-billed Murre seen on trips out of
NY and NJ. It seems that the cold water temperatures may have actually
pushed many of these birds south. What we're hoping to do is to be out
there when they return. This should occur when the offshore waters "warm"
back up into the 40s, which over the past few years has started in
mid-March. Our plan is intercept them when they come back our way, with the
added bonus that many of the alcids should be in breeding plumage. We'll
also be looking for returning Gannets (which may be in large numbers and an
array of plumages at this time of year), loons, grebes, sea ducks,
Kittiwakes, and other good gulls.

We'll once again be aboard the 90' Capt. Lou VII out of Freeport. This is a
comfortable boat that has a huge, covered, and birdable top deck, a heated
cabin, and separate men's and ladies facilities. We also usually arrange to
have hot food and coffee available for sale in the galley as well.

The trip cost is $130, though members of NYSOA or the NYSYBC can sign up for
$115. The boat sails at 8:00 AM, returning at roughly 4:00 PM. To make a
reservation, go to our web site or you can contact us by phone or e-mail at
i...@paulagics.com.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Still Room on Jan. 23 Freeport 8 Hour Pelagic

2011-01-05 Thread Paul Guris
We still have space aboard our Sunday, Jan. 23 pelagic trip out of Freeport.

We ran this trip last year and did very well. Our sightings included 33
Common Murres, 2 Atlantic Puffins, roughly 200 Razorbills, dozens of
Kittiwakes, incredibly cooperative Iceland Gulls, a great Gannet show, and
various winter waterfowl.

The trip sails on the Capt. Lou VII, a very comfortable boat with full
heated cabin and spacious upper deck that's great for birding. We'll leave
at 8:00 AM and return around 4:00 PM. The cost is $130 and is being run in
conjunction with New York City Audubon.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Announcing Jan. 23 Freeport 8 Hour Pelagic

2010-11-29 Thread Paul Guris
We are running a nearshore pelagic in conjunction with New York City Audubon
out of Freeport, NY Sunday, January 23. We'll be aboard the 85' Capt. Lou
VII that we've used in the past. This is a comfortable boat with a birdable
top deck, a heated cabin, and separate men's and ladies facilities.

We've had good luck on this trip in the past. We have been finding Common
Murre to be regular and in numbers in the area south of Jones Inlet within
10-20 miles of shore. Last year we found over 30 Common Murres, as well as
several Puffins and over 200 Razorbills. On other trips where we've just
passed through this area we've also found Thick-billed Murre and Black
Guillemot.

As we bird, we'll be chumming and hoping to bring some good gulls into the
back of the boat. In addition to alcids, we'll be looking for Northern
Gannet, Bonaparte's, Glaucous, Iceland, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and
Black-legged Kittiwake. We also expect to find more common seabirds such as
loons, scoters, Long-tailed Duck, Red-breasted Merganser, etc.

This can be a great trip for photographers, with Gannets often coming so
close to check out the chum that you can clearly see their blue eyes.
Kittiwakes, Iceland Gulls, and other gulls will often stay for extended
periods of time while dining on the delicious chum we'll be shoveling out.
With a bit of luck, we might get some alcids to sit on the water and pose
for us.

The trip cost is $130, and the boat sails at 8:00 AM, returning at roughly
4:00 PM. If you are a member of NYC Audubon, be sure to see their site for
information on a discount for members. To make a reservation, go to our web
site or you can contact us by phone or e-mail at i...@paulagics.com.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Special 22 Hour Overnight Pelagic - Sun, Aug 22-Mon, Aug23

2010-07-20 Thread Paul Guris
This year we are attempting to run a special type of trip that we have been
running successfully out of Lewes, DE for a number of years now. We are
going to attempt to do a long overnight trip to and beyond the Hudson Canyon
for a small group. The trip is 22 hours long and goes beyond where the old
trips of the 80's and 90's would visit. As an FYI to New York birders, all
of our planned daylight birding will be countable for NY. Only the last 4-5
travel hours when we're riding home will be NJ only waters. As an FYI for
New Jersey birders, the whole trip will be countable for NJ.

We'll be aboard the 80' Suzie Girl out of Belmar, NJ, a stable boat that
we've used often. We will be taking roughly 15 people so there is room for
everybody to sleep. The trip is not cheap at $385, but with 15 people this
is still not quite a break-even for us. It is, however, a trip we'd love to
run just to see what's out there. Sleeping space will be given on a first
reserved, first pick basis. Participants need to provide their own food and
beverages.

The general planned itinerary is to leave on Sunday night, August 22 at 9:00
PM. We will cruise gently and get some sleep on the way out past the Hudson
Canyon and into deep 1,000+ fathom water. We will arrive in the dark and
set up a chum slick. Those of you who are interested are welcome to fish
(tuna being the main target), and those who are not can bird in the lights
or sleep until first light. When it's light enough to bird, we will scan
the slick to see what we've brought in. Tubenoses feed at night, so we
should have birds ready and waiting for us. This is one of the big
advantages of an overnight trip like this. Out of Delaware, this early AM
time of day is when we find LEACH's STORM-PETREL. Oddly, we don't find them
later in the day. Once it's light enough and we've worked the nearby birds,
we'll motor down our slick which, at this point, may be well over a mile
long. After we're done with the slick, we'll work our way back in through
the length of the Hudson Canyon until it's time to head for home. We expect
to return around 7:00 PM.

In addition to LEACH'S STORM-PETREL, other birds we've found multiple times
on our half dozen Delaware overnight trips include WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL
(incl. two trips with two birds), LONG-TAILED JAEGER, BRIDLED TERN, SOUTH
POLAR SKUA, and ARCTIC TERN. We have even found BAND-RUMPED STORM-PETREL
and SABINE'S GULL once each. Birds we have seen more commonly include
AUDUBON'S, CORY'S, and GREATER SHEARWATER, WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, POMARINE
JAEGER, and RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. For those who are interested in
cetaceans, we have found SPERM WHALE and CUVIER'S BEAKED WHALE out in the
deep waters.

See Life Paulagics is dedicated to provide an appropriate number of
friendly, helpful, and approachable leaders for all of our trips. We use
radios with headsets to get the word of any sightings around the boat
quickly. It is important to us to get the participants on the birds and
make sure they are comfortable with the IDs, not just create a big trip
list.

Be sure to check out our web site for information on how to sign up, and to
review our policies. If you have any questions or need more information,
please feel free to contact us by e-mail or phone.

Hope to see you aboard!

[nysbirds-l] Sun, Feb 28 Belmar, NJ Pelagic Still Has Space

2010-02-06 Thread Paul Guris
We are running a 12-hour winter pelagic on Sunday, February 28 aboard the
Suzie Girl out of Belmar, NJ. We plan on visiting both New Jersey and New
York pelagic waters. Beyond a certain point, birds actually count in both
states!

This trip is planned for the best time of year to find Dovekie. We have had
excellent success in these waters on past trips, with one trip out of
Freeport, NY finding over 9,000 birds! The water conditions that we want
for finding these birds appear have set up off the coast, so we have an
excellent chance of finding them again. Other target birds include
Razorbill, Common and Thick-billed Murre, Northern Fulmar, Northern Gannet,
Glaucous, Iceland, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and Black-legged
Kittiwake.

It looks like there are excellent pelagic birds out there. One of our
regular leaders recently went on a fishing trip to this area that went out
less than 20 miles and saw 9 Common Murres, a Puffin, dozens of Razorbills,
and two Iceland Gulls. Our inshore trip out of Freeport, NY in January went
to similar waters (the other side of the same underwater feature) and found
33 Common Murres, two Puffin, over 200 Razorbills, several Iceland Gulls,
and dozens of Kittiwakes. We have an excellent shot at all of these
species, plus the zone we're targeting further offshore is much better for
Dovekie, Northern Fulmar, andPuffins.

The trip cost is $175, and the boat sails at 6:00 AM, returning at roughly
6:00 PM. To make a reservation, go to our web site or you can contact us by
phone or e-mail.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Results of Sun, 01/17 Freeport Pelagic

2010-01-18 Thread Paul Guris
Sunday's trip was a success, with the weather holding back long enough for
us to get in a great trip.As we cleared Jones Inlet, winds were blowing
about 10 knots. The usual winter waterfowl and gulls were flying around,
and our designated Chum Monkey (not a derogatory term, as this was the
person responsible for the killer looks we got at some of our birds) started
right away.

Our path took us 18 miles due south offshore, crossing rocky undersea
habitat which is good for holding baitfish, and hence attracting seabirds.
We then moved east, and returned to Jones Inlet at an angle so that as the
afternoon winds picked up, they were on our rear quarter. This gave us a
pretty comfortable ride back in, despite the strengthening winds.

Within about 5 miles of leaving the inlet, we started to find flocks of
RAZORBILL flying west. One single flock had 25 individuals. This is
probably part of the same movement that brought so many Razorbills to
Montauk earlier. Razorbills continued to show up throughout the day, giving
us an excellent total of over 200 birds.

Further offshore, we found our first sitting alcid. As we approached, we
were able to clearly ID a winter plumaged COMMON MURRE. After enjoying that
bird, we moved a short distance and found two more Common Murres, on in
winter plumage and one molting into it's summer finery. We continued to find
Common Murres outside of 10 miles, and ended up with an excellent count of
33 birds. This was short of our record of 49 birds in 2008, but it was
still good enough to be New York's second highest count, surpassing our 20
bird total from 2006. We have now found this species in numbers in 4 out of
4 trips, with our worst year being 9 birds in 2007. During the trip, I was
gently lobbying the NYSARC members aboard to remove this species from the
review list.

A nice surprise was a sitting ATLANTIC PUFFIN. Often we have to go further
offshore to find this species. It was a very dark faced and dark billed
individual, indicating that it was a young of the year. A second Puffin,
also a young bird, was seen flying by the boat later in the day.

By keeping a steady stream of chum going, we always had a flock of gulls
behind the boat. This brought in some of the more desirable gull species,
and even caused several RAZORBILLS to make close passes by the stern or land
near the boat. Early in the trip we had a first winter plumaged ICELAND
GULL come in to the chum and put on a stellar show. Later we also had a
full adult bird come in close to the boat and show off. The real star of
the chum slick show, though, had to be the BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES. While
many came in, checked us out, and flew off (as these birds often do), we had
a number of them that stuck with us. They put on quite a show as they flew
amongst the other gulls and quickly snatched up pieces of chum.

Before we finally returned to the dock, we checked out the jetties just
outside the inlet and found a male HARLEQUIN DUCK, a number of COMMON EIDER,
and several HARBOR SEALS. We returned to the dock, shuttled those people
taking the train over to the station, and called it a very successful day.

Final counts for all species were:

Brant - 40
Black Duck - 40
Greater Scaup - 5
Surf Scoter - 20
Black Scoter - 30
White-winged Scoter - 40
dark-winged scoter sp. - 56
Harlequin Duck - 1 (male)
Long-tailed Duck - 500+
Common Eider - 273
Red-breasted Merganser - 35
Red-throated Loon - 50+
Common Loon - 36
Horned Grebe - 1
Northern Gannet - 40
Great Cormorant - 1
Double-crested Cormorant - 4
Bonaparte's Gull - 75
Ring-billed Gull - 16
Herring Gull - 300+
Iceland Gull - 2 (1st basic and ad.)
Great Black-backed Gull - 60+
Black-legged Kittiwake - 73 (only 8 1st basic)
Common Murre - 33
Razorbill - 202
large alcid sp. - 78
Atlantic Puffin - 2 (both 1st basic)

Harbor Seal - 3

Although we have no other trips scheduled out of Freeport this year, two
trips out of Belmar, NJ will be going to New York pelagic waters.

Thanks to my leaders, an excellent captain and crew, and all who
participated.

[nysbirds-l] About Posting Pelagic Trips to the List-Server

2010-01-15 Thread Paul Guris
Hi, John. Yours is a very reasonable question, so I thought I should chime
in and explain my postings.

The general view on advertising pelagics, as compared to other tours, is
that they are of particular interest to state birders, plus they are very
hard (or at least very expensive) to do on your own. A trip to Borneo might
be of interest to some birders in New York, but it's not New York birding.
Trips to Montauk are popular among NY birders, but it's easy to do that trip
on your own.

When I started to run pelagic trips, I requested permission to post them
from the list owners from each state list whose pelagic waters I'd be in.
If any of the list owners felt that this was not reason enough to allow
posting, I would not. For example, the Pennsylvania list-server is run on
National Audubon servers. They have a very strict non-advertisement
policy. Although they don't have pelagic waters, pelagic trips are of
interest to PA birders, but the list owner politely denied my request. No
problem.

FYI, back when I made my request, the list owner in New York asked that I
limit myself to two posts per trip. Although my memory ain't what it used
to be, I've tried to stick to that.

[nysbirds-l] Sun, Jan 17 Freeport Pelagic 8-Hour Pelagic

2010-01-15 Thread Paul Guris
We still have space on Sunday's 8-hour pelagic trip out of Freeport, NY.
The marine forecast as of the last update is for very calms seas in the
morning, with winds picking up some in the afternoon. Understand that it's
a weather forecast, so they may be wrong, but right now it's looking pretty
good.

Our plan is to work the inshore areas that we normally just pass through for
Common Murre, Thick-billed Murre, and maybe even Black Guillemot, all of
which we've seen on past trips. The water is still fairly warm (well, warm
to an alcid) inshore so if we get out far enough, we might even have a shot
at Dovekie or Puffin. We'll be chumming along the way to keep gulls behind
the boat, and have a good shot at Glaucous, Iceland, and Lesser Black-backed
Gulls, and possibly Kittiwake. We can also expect more inshore species like
Gannets, loons, and waterfowl.

Visit our web site or contact us for more information or to sign up. If you
plan on taking the train to Freeport, let us know so we can arrange a rides
between the train station and the boat.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] 8-hour Freeport Pelagic on Sun, Jan 17

2009-12-26 Thread Paul Guris
See Life Paulagics has scheduled an 8-hour nearshore pelagic (a bit of an
oxymoron, I know) for Sunday, January 17.

We have been thinking about running this trip for a while due to our success
within 20 miles of shore on our three previous NY February trips. On those
trips, we simply ran through this zone in a roughly straight line in order
to get farther offshore. We found numbers of Common Murres in all three
years (20, 7, 49 respectively), found Thick-billed Murre twice, and even
found a Black Guillemot once. There is excellent undersea habitat to the
east that we've never been able to search before, and we hope to do so on
this trip. Other reasonable possibilities in this area at this time of year
include Razorbill, Northern Gannet, Iceland, Glaucous, and Lesser
Black-backed Gulls, Black-legged Kittiwake, possibly Little or Black-headed
Gull if we find good numbers of Bonaparte's, and winter waterfowl such as
loons, grebes, and sea ducks.

The particulars are:
Date: Sun, January 17
Time: 8:00-4:00
Cost: $130
Boat: Capt. Lou VII, Freeport, NY

This is a big, comfortable boat with a heated cabin, separate men's and
women's heads, a full walk-around below, a large birdable upper deck, and a
galley. Directions can be found on our web site at www.paulagics.com. If
you sign up and wish to take the train to Freeport, let us know and we'll
arrange a ride for you to the boat.

[nysbirds-l] Dec 6 Belmar, NJ Pelagic is a Go (Weather Willing)

2009-12-02 Thread Paul Guris
Seabirders-

We have enough people to make the See Life Paulagics pelagic trip scheduled
for Sunday, December 6 out of Belmar, NJ a "go", weather depending of
course. We'll be aboard the 80' Suzie Girl, a fast, comfortable boat with a
full walk-around, birdable upper deck, and heated cabin with benches.

We expect to be in New Jersey and overlapping New York pelagic waters up to
40-60 miles offshore. Target species at this time of year include Dovekie,
Puffin, Razorbill, Fulmar, Greater and Manx Shearwater, Kittiwake, Red
Phalarope, Gannets, Iceland, Glaucous, and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and
other winter seabirds. We've been having our local Pennsylvania Dutch
butcher save suet for us, so we should have a good amount of chum to keep
the gulls behind and hopefully bring in some other birds. We'll also be on
the look out for cetaceans.

The trip is scheduled to run from 6:00 AM to about 6:00 PM. The cost is $175.

Contact us by e-mail or phone if you are interested, or sign up on our web site.

Hope to see you aboard!
