2013-12-28 Thread Alan C
There are always several old bulls in the area. Most likely died of natural
causes. Parks Board probably took the tusks. There must have been quite an
orgy a couple of days ago when it died. I'm sure a large croc could take a
young elephant I have seen photos of elephants with the end of their
trunks bitten off. Mind you, a 6m brute like this one from the Zambezi might
be able to do the job:

I agree, one does tend to get a bit blasè after a while. You have to look
beyond the obvious to stay interested. Most people don't even notice the
small stuff.

That must have been a sight to see. I wonder how the elephant died. Too old
to defend itself? Can crocs take a healthy elephant?

Your comments about the turtles remind me of my South African hosts when I
was there. Getting all excited about seeing giraffes, and elephants and
buffalo and lions, they just went meh!, but got themselves all excited
about dung beetles.

Secondly, a tortoise drinking from a small puddle on the road. Have never

What would you do (stay with Pentax, or...)

2013-12-28 Thread Juan Buhler
Hello all,

I don't post here much anymore, but I decided to ask this because I
see a lot of the old names and the pdml has always been an awesome
group of people.

As some of you might know, I've shot with Pentax all my photographic
life. Starting with an ME-Super, going through PZ-1, MX (I still have
two black ones!), ZX-n, istD, K10D, to my current ones, a K5 and a
K-01 I bought because it was a really cheap way to put a sensor behind
my lenses.

I love the quality and ergonomics of my Pentax cameras. After all
these years, I obviously have a nice set of lenses. I am currently
traveling in South America long term, so I have a subset of those with
me: 12-24 zoom, 21 Limited, FA28/2.8, FA35/2, FA50/1.7, 17-70 zoom.
The first three are my most used ones right now. I also shoot a lot
with a Leica M8 and either a 28 or 35mm lens on it.

Now the time has came to renew my DSLR. Obviously, an option that is
up there is a K3. It seems like a camera I'd love, and given that it's
a Pentax, I can just use it without waiting for my fingers to learn
where the controls are.

BUT. I've missed having full frame all this time. I would love to go
back to shooting mostly with a 50mm, because of its shallow depth of
field. I would love to have a big viewfinder, and fast AF wouldn't
hurt. Every time I pick up a Canon, it makes me sad how fast the AF
is. Even way older models, like an original 5D, focuses way faster
with a 50/1.8 than my K5 with a 50/1.7 or 35/2.

So I am now trying to make this decision: get a K3, along with a 20-40
(that zoom looks great for photos in the street!), or get a 60D ($1300
at KEH), with a 50/1.8 and possibly a 28/1.8? If I get a Canon, I have
lenses available through my girlfriend: a 17-40/4 and a 24-105/4, so I
would immediately have a complete kit.

The money spent would be about the same. One option means staying with
a brand I know and love. The other means getting full frame and state
of the art AF, no more little screws on my lenses.

I feel like if I get the 60D I will miss Pentax tremendously. And if I
get the K3 I will love it, and in three months I will be wishing for a
full frame K mount.

What says the PDML? It seems like the only good thing about Pentax not
releasing a FF camera is that Cotty's hat is still intact, no?

2013-12-28 Thread Paul Stenquist
All I can say is that the K-3 image quality is terrific. I suspect it would
equal the 60D, although the sensor wouldn't be as large. (Both cameras shoot a
full frame:-). The autofocus of the K-3 is much improved over the K-5, but I
don't know that it's the equal of Canon.

Juan - I have been enjoying the adventures of Milo and envy you your trip.
With each photo you posted I played a bit of a guessing game: Did he shoot
this one with Leica or Pentax? I never found any defining characteristic in
the subjects or in the rendering which gave a clue as to which one you used...
I don't know Canon, so I can't speak to your alternatives on the dark side. I
do have the K-3 and 20-40. Very quiet in operation, very comfortable,
straightforward to use, good results... If you go this route, you may still
lust for a 35mm-sized sensor, but you won't otherwise be disappointed with your
choice.

Going with a friend in about a week (big electronic show), and haven't

Googling I have found: Valley of Fire (red rock formations, 1 hour

a
mock Venetian street with water and gondolas, a mock Eiffel tower, a mock
Sphinx, and a neon sign boneyard (junk yard of old Las Vegas signs).

Sometimes people on this list know where to shoot. Anything I've missed?
Or shouldn't miss?

Anyone been to Las Vegas in recent memory? Know  any good photo spots, in
town, or out?

Going with a friend in about a  week (big electronic show), and haven't
been there since I was about 15. I am  not a gambler. I will visit the show for
a while, but it's not really my  thing.

Googling I have found:  Valley of Fire (red rock formations,  1 hour
north), Goodsprings (ghost town, 30 minutes south), and in Las Vegas  itself:
a
mock Venetian street with water and gondolas, a mock Eiffel  tower, a mock
Sphinx, and a neon sign boneyard (junk yard of old Las Vegas  signs).

Sometimes people on this list know where to shoot. Anything I've  missed?
Or shouldn't miss?

Thanks in advance, Marnie aka Doe  :-)   Probably no one on this list has
been there at all recently.

Re: What would you do (stay with Pentax, or...)

Now the time has came to renew my DSLR. Obviously, an option that is
up there is a K3. It seems like a camera I'd love, and given that it's
a Pentax, I can just use it without waiting for my fingers to learn
 where the controls are.

Fingers are generally pretty good at learning new things, even if it
takes a week or so of fumbling at first.

But do they focus accurately that quickly?

So I am now trying to make this decision: get a K3, along with a 20-40
(that zoom looks great for photos in the street!), or get a 60D ($1300
 at KEH), with a 50/1.8 and possibly a 28/1.8? If I get a Canon, I have
 lenses available through my girlfriend: a 17-40/4 and a 24-105/4, so I
would immediately have a complete kit.

Or, you could offer your girlfriend half the cost of the 60D, as long
as you get access to it. That way you have access to full frame,
and get to see how well it really works, plush she gets to carry
the heavy kit.

My hunch is that if you get the K3, in three months you'll be wishing
you had the money for the full frame K mount.

What says the PDML? It seems like the only good thing about Pentax not
releasing a FF camera is that Cotty's hat is still intact, no?

It seems to me that debating K3 or full frame is kind of like debating
Corvette or Ferrari. There are differences in performance, but I don't
know how often they'll have an effect in day to day use. I think that
we are also starting to see the effects that Ricoh is having on Pentax.
There are people on this list that know more about marketing than I do,
and perhaps they could answer what would be the ideal timing on releasing
a high end APS and a high end full frame. If you release them at the same
time, you only get one publicity bump. If you release the full frame first
then people who buy the full frame won't buy the APS, however there are
certain people that will always buy the top of the line body when it is
available. However, even they might take pause at dropping $2K+ on a full
frame body only a few weeks after dropping $1,300 on a K3. Also, when
the full frame comes out, the K-3 will no longer be the best Pentax body
on the market, and will lose sales value.

So, even barring engineering challenges, I don't think that they'd
release the full frame until prices start to drop on the K-3. The other
question is, would they announce it at a big show? Or would they avoid
that period and announce it during an otherwise quiet photo news period,
so that they are not competing with other announcements?

I'd be inclined to wait until at least a short while after whatever would
be the best time, from a marketing point of view, to announce a full frame,
to make any Pentax buying decisions that have a long term financial impact.

If you were to buy the 60D, would you keep your Pentax gear? If you were
to buy it, and in four months Pentax announces a full frame, could you
sell it to your girlfriend to finance the Pentax upgrade?

Is there anyplace that you could rent the 60D for a week or two and
see if you really like it?

Re: What would you do (stay with Pentax, or...)

2013-12-28 Thread Boris Liberman

Few random idea, Juan, if I may.

1. Canon 60D is not a full frame camera. The Canon 6D however is.

2. You can buy a bundle of 6D plus 24-105/4L relatively cheap. Further
it stands to reason that currently there're further discounts.

3. I would suggest you double check whether you could adapt your Pentax
lenses to Canon camera in reversible manner.

4. I don't think you should consider a *possibility* of Pentax
introducing a full frame camera *in the future*. You, if I understand
you correctly, want to renew your camera here and now.

So I think the strategy would be simple. Someplace along your travel
route there ought to be a shop where you could actually hold/look into
viewfinder/take few shots of a sample unit of both Canon 6D and Pentax
K3. So instead of asking us - you will see for yourself.

You know what - may be, just may be, instead of buying a new DSLR you
could buy a new lens for your Leica M8.

Upcoming UK Trip

2013-12-28 Thread Mark Roberts
OK, so Lisa and I have pretty much solidified our travel plans for our
upcoming trip.

We'll be arriving in London on the 11th of January (Saturday) and
staying in London for the week (I talked Lisa out of going to
Cambridge). We have theatre tickets for Tuesday and Thursday evenings
(although the Tuesday show is contingent on the Apollo Theatre being
re-opened by then as they have stated).

We're doing a day trip to Oxford on Wednesday, largely so Lisa can see
the Bodlian Library's exhibit on 800 years of medical history in
Oxford. Considering that return trains to London run fairly late,
perhaps we can connect with Cotty and company?

For the rest of the time in London we're planning on seeing the
Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit at the Natural History
Museum and the Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibit in Greenwich
(Bob Walkden territory – fancy a pint somewhere in the neighborhood?)

We've got plenty of other items on the itinerary but they're all
pretty flexible, so if any UK PDML people can come down we'd love to
meet up.

Re: questions about the 20-40

2013-12-28 Thread Boris Liberman

Zos, my reply interspersed. I also took the liberty and used * symbols
to outline some things that kind of jumped to my eyes.

On 12/27/2013 8:00 AM, Zos Xavius wrote:

Let's see. As a walk around lens this is ideal. Compared to the
DA*16-50 its:

Smaller Lighter Slower Less Range

Both have WR.

I wonder how come the lens that is slower and has less range is ideal
walk around?! You see, I have about 5,000 images in my collection shot
with DA* 16-50/2.8. It is a very good lens. I did not like its double
cam barrel design and wasn't very appreciative of not knowing whether
the SDM motor would quit on me. Also I did not like the sharpness
towards the corner at wider zoom settings. However, when it would hit,
it would hit it big.

Further, for walk around, I would rather agree to lose on the long end
of the zoom range rather than on the wide one.

Its f2.8 on its wide end and f4 at 40mm. From the samples I saw it
rendered very nicely. Much better than the 16-50. Out of focus areas
and the roll off are rather smooth and pleasing. I don't know what
minimum focus is, but I suspect its closer than the 16-50. I also
have a feeling this lens would look really nice on some extension
tubes. This looks like nearly a stack of primes and could replace
having a 21ltd, 35ltd, 40ltd with one lens. For a zoom like this, I
rarely shoot wide open, but it does look very usable there.

That's right. All these limited lenses are rather slow, so it would be
only natural to replace them with another slow zoom lens of similar
range. Re the three limited lenses you mentioned:

1. 21/3.2 - well, better close it to 4.0 or even 5.6 to get optimal
sharpness.

2. 40/2.8 - the OOF rendering is not to my liking from what I've seen on
the net.

3. 35/2.8 - this one looks particularly limited to me. What would be
the use of a macro lens if at maximal magnification the distance between
the front element of the lens and the subject would be how much? Few
centimeters?! Good for inanimate subjects or reproduction. And slow like
a zoom lens...

So indeed, it would seem that new DA Limited zoom is preferable to these
three. Beside macro capabilities of 35/2.8 - one would seem to be only
gaining.

*Compared to the Sigma 18-35*, it has a slightly different range and
is much slower. I think they are both pretty sharp lenses, but I bet
the limited resolves more. The sigma is also HUGE, lacks SMC/HD
coating, and *doesn't say pentax on the barrel*. I know that if I
wanted to shoot some street, I'd want the much smaller lens. I only
wish it were say 16-40. The extra width would come in handy, but
other than that this covers a range that is very useful, at least for
landscape and outdoors shooters. I think it is way too expensive, but
I have to admit that I really want one and a 15 and 70 to go along
with it.

The fact that average banana weighs approximately like an average apple
which in turn weighs somewhat close to an orange, does not mean these
fruits need to be compared. Let me suggest to you, Zos, that Sigma is a
truly revolutionary breakthrough in lens design. The sharpness that is
provides and other renderings qualities (except work against the light
sources) are indeed worth of title stack of _high quality_ primes.

Additionally, you get wonderful USB connectivity option that would allow
you to fully align this lens with AF system of your very camera, which
for critical applications is well - critical.

I have very old 17-70/2.8-4.5 and in terms of coatings it is 100% there.
I don't miss SMC/HD or whatever.

I totally don't understand doesn't say pentax on the barrel
argument/sentiment/mention. Let me ask you - when having to choose
85/1.4 lens, would you then immediately dismiss Zeiss 85/1.4 (in Pentax
K mount, of course) or Leica R 80/1.4 (with properly applied Leitax
mount conversion) just because both Zeiss and Leica are not Pentax?

Granted the Sigma 18-35 is big and heavy and very much so, it is how I
would want Pentax to push the envelope and not offer to me yet another
slow limited lens. The FA limited lenses were brilliant in being of
exceptional optical quality and optimal speed (not too fast, not too
slow). The DA limited lenses are, well, how to put it - indicative of
someone in Pentax non-engineering headquarters deciding - I want my new
limited lenses small, nothing else matters, give me small lenses. And so
we have all the pancakes...

And like I said - DA 20-40 seems like a good small street shooting lens
or common purpose slow around the standard focal length optic. The WR
adds nicely, the barrel design would seem to ensure somewhat better than
average longevity.

As for optical qualities - I would very much hope to see PDMLers shots
that were made with it.

I would say definitely go with the Canon - my son has the 17-40/4 he

for a full-frame beast? (the 60D is APS-C) There's plenty of choice

As Tevye said, on the other hand

If Pentax do pull a rabbit out of a hat and bring FF to the market, I
would love one. Exactly how possible this is, is anyone's guess. The hat
stays on the plate for now.

I'm shooting with some Fuji hardware at the moment and loving it. I've

Ann, Bob: my tongue was firmly in my cheek when I commented about
places not to go. Well, half way, I guess. :-) But I think it's a
great topic, and it's been darned quiet 'round here of late.

I realize that folks find new ways of seeing and presenting the
familiar all the time, and that is a worthy challenge in itself.
Reinterpreting the classics is a language, like writing new blues
tunes by plundering the old ones.

I don't actually travel much myself, so I reinterpret what's around me
(flowers, cats, people) and I hope I can somehow do it with a fresh
PoV. Regardless, it's new to me, and that's good enough for now.

The places make for quantity, but not necessarily quality, of photos. I've
always liked Steve McCurry's photo of the Taj Mahal as an example of seeing
something new.

In fact, if you google steve mccurry taj mahal you'll see that he's found many
different ways to show the Taj Mahal differently. I guess that's why he's in
Magnum and working for National Geographic, and we're not.

PESO FA 50/1.4 wide open

2013-12-28 Thread Paul Stenquist
When I posted a Christmas pic of Grace I noted that it appeared I had missed on
setting the fine focus adjustment on my FA 50/1.4. It was obvious that it was
front focusing. Adjusted it again today -- with a new target that precludes
focusing on the wrong line. Then I shot Grace and her Christmas present at
f1.4. The focus is on her left eye. The FA 50/1.4 is a darn good lens when its
calibrated. (Mine came in at -4.) While the K-3 delivers more DOF than would a
24 x 36 camera, I find it delivers enough softness in the foreground and
background to make me happy.

Re: What would you do (stay with Pentax, or...)

2013-12-28 Thread P.J. Alling
Well, based on everything I've read lately, if you're not sticking with
Pentax the better choice as far as imaging would be Nikon. I haven't
compared Nikon and Canon directly for autofocus speed but others have
said that Nikon is as good as Canon at for that at least at the upper
end of their respective camera ranges. I read somewhere that Canon had
managed to capture the lions share of the SLR market without having a
wide angle lens worthy of mounting on a camera. I kind of agree.

Now you probably want an optical viewfinder. I guess that would leave
out the new Sony 24x36mm mirrorless cameras, though they're supposed to
be very, very, good, with what might be the best or second best EVF
available, but in that case, if you can get repetitively clean 16-24mp
images from 4:3 or APS-C mirrorless cameras there seems to be less need
for full frame, the viewfinder isn't quite so constrained by the laws of
physics. The real advantage I suppose of the new Sonys is that with the
short lens registration distance adapters for lots of legacy lenses will
be available, which would make my lovely wide angle K mount lenses wide
angle again, and maybe easier to shoot.

So that's where I think I'd go, either to Nikon, they have the best
output for imaging right now, or take a good hard look at the Sony
a7/a7R but that would probably be in addition to keeping a Pentax body.

This is beside the point, but I've handled Nikon and Canon bodies and I
can safely say I don't hate Nikon ergonomics, I can't say the same for
most Canon and some Sony products.

On 12/28/2013 11:48 AM, Juan Buhler wrote:

Re: What would you do (stay with Pentax, or...)

2013-12-28 Thread Juan Buhler
Thanks all for the thoughtful replies.

Sorry--I was thinking 6D and looking at the 6D reviews, but somehow
wrote 60D. Maybe it was some kind of Freudian thing that means that I
want to stay with a smaller-than-35mm format. Or it might mean the
opposite, the only sure thing is that it was Freudian :) Thanks Boris
and Cotty for the correction.

Paul, Stan--thanks. I am sure the K3 image quality is excellent. Heck,
my K5 makes better images than I care for--give me a 12MP full frame
sensor on a istD sized body and that's what I'll shoot with. Image
quality stopped being an issue for me when we passed 10MP.

Larry--that is a great idea. Except that Stephanie doesn't really
shoot with Canon. She has a 1Dsomething mark2 (a non full frame one)
and those two lenses, but in the last year found that my old Panasonic
GF1 and 20mm/1.7 is plenty for her. I envy that, she manages to make
great photographs and tell the story she wants to tell with a little
four year old camera. The Canon hardware was left in San Francisco
when we went there briefly in August. Besides, there would be no
offering her half the price of the 6D, we are past that stage--money
is our money...

Boris--I actually have access to a 6D right now. I'm in Buenos Aires,
and Stephanie's brother is here visiting. Another gearaholic, he
brought both a 6D and a Sony 7R. I'm glad I got to try the
Sony--extremely nice, compact full frame, but the shutter sound is
like you are shooting a Pentax 6x7, and there's this (digital)
viewfinder blackout that lasts an extremely long time between shots.
So the Sony is discarded, even though I could easily mount all my SMC
glass on it. The 6D strikes me as a little too big for my taste. It's
too bad he didn't bring any prime lenses other than a Zeiss 35mm,
which is also too big.

All--I agree, it really dosn't seem like there's going to be a FF
Pentax any time soon, if ever. More and more of their lenses are APS,
and there doesn't seem to be a price range where they would fit: how
much better than a 6D would it have to be for it to compete? I know
*I* would gladly pay $2500 for a digital MX sort of camera with a K
mount and a full frame sensor, but how many more people would?
Probably not too many, and Ricoh/Pentax knows that.

Cotty--as usual sir, you embarrass me with your praise. Thanks! The
Fuji cameras seem really nice from what I've seen.

BTW, one more thing: I might be getting an M9 to replace the M8. Not
buying it--it's a long story, but basically I'll have an M9 to use and
keep as long as I want. So maybe that will take care of the full frame
urges. I'm flying to the USA next month, so that's when all the gear
renewal is going to happen. Incredible how much cheaper things are in
the States compared to most everywhere else.

I'm leaning K3 now, because of the size and ergonomics...

Re: What would you do (stay with Pentax, or...)

2013-12-28 Thread Juan Buhler
Funny, I was writing when your email arrived. The Sony a7r I discard,
after hearing the shutter and seeing its frame to frame VF blackout. I
hear the cheaper a7 might be better in those regards, and seriously,
it is tempting. Wouldn't it be great to have one of those with an SMC
M 50/1.4 on it? It even *looks* kind of like a black MX!

Nikon is not an option for me because then I would be all on my own
regarding lenses. With Canon, I could be borrowing really great glass
from family. With Nikon, no such luck.

Actually they don't trust their mail to it - it's blocked, and there's no
insert for the next collection time. Not sure if it's George V or VI,
probably V based on the font. Not earlier because the Post Office was
started under Victoria. There are plenty of her post boxes still in use.
I'd guess that one is listed or subject to some other sort of preservation

Well damn. There goes my plan to send letters full of coins, paper

Send them to me - I'll make sure they don't get here.

Re: What would you do (stay with Pentax, or...)

2013-12-28 Thread P.J. Alling
I've heard that the Sony shutters are loud too. But then again, I'm
still shooting a K20D and there's talk about how loud that shutter is,
until I talk too some of my friends who are shooting mid range Canon and
Nikon bodies, and then they tell me how quiet my camera is, (I guess
they don't listen to it autofocusing because I use mostly manual focus
lenses).

On 12/28/2013 3:44 PM, Juan Buhler wrote:

Funny, I was writing when your email arrived. The Sony a7r I discard,

hear the cheaper a7 might be better in those regards, and seriously,
it is tempting.

Well, based on everything I've read lately, if you're not sticking with
Pentax the better choice as far as imaging would be Nikon. I haven't
compared Nikon and Canon directly for autofocus speed but others have said
that Nikon is as good as Canon at for that at least at the upper end of
their respective camera ranges. I read somewhere that Canon had managed to
capture the lions share of the SLR market without having a wide angle lens
worthy of mounting on a camera. I kind of agree.

Now you probably want an optical viewfinder. I guess that would leave out
the new Sony 24x36mm mirrorless cameras, though they're supposed to be very,
very, good, with what might be the best or second best EVF available, but in
that case, if you can get repetitively clean 16-24mp images from 4:3 or
APS-C mirrorless cameras there seems to be less need for full frame, the
viewfinder isn't quite so constrained by the laws of physics. The real
advantage I suppose of the new Sonys is that with the short lens
registration distance adapters for lots of legacy lenses will be available,
which would make my lovely wide angle K mount lenses wide angle again, and
maybe easier to shoot.

So that's where I think I'd go, either to Nikon, they have the best output
for imaging right now, or take a good hard look at the Sony a7/a7R but that
would probably be in addition to keeping a Pentax body.

This is beside the point, but I've handled Nikon and Canon bodies and I can
safely say I don't hate Nikon ergonomics, I can't say the same for most
Canon and some Sony products.

On 12/28/2013 11:48 AM, Juan Buhler wrote:

I realize that folks find new ways of seeing and presenting the
familiar all the time, and that is a worthy challenge in itself.
Reinterpreting the classics is a language, like writing new blues
tunes by plundering the old ones.

I don't actually travel much myself, so I reinterpret what's around me
(flowers, cats, people) and I hope I can somehow do it with a fresh
PoV. Regardless, it's new to me, and that's good enough for now.

A couple of lines (somewhat paraphrased) that come to mind thinking about
this - you certainly miss a lot if you avoid all the places people have
photographed often -

It is fun to find a secret place, a place no one knew - but it
isn't going to necessarily make for better photos.

Two things:

1 – I hope you can contribute to the PDML Photo Annual this year

2 – I think the K3 would work for you, but if you consider switching I
think the new Sony full-frame A7 and A7r cameras would be suitable for
street photography. Smaller than cameras with a reflex mirror and
quieter, too (the 24MP A7 is apparently even quieter than the 36MP A7r
for some reason).

No problems here. It was bloody miserable in Versailles until the afternoon of
Christmas Day when it cheered up a bit, and they had a lot of flooding in
Normandy and Brittany.

Funnily enough, wandering around the gardens at Versailles reminded me of
Beamish.
