The biggest negative about Flickr is that you have no control over the

I add 'tech info' to my photos when I think of it and want to give the

Subject: Bargain Pentax "People" zoom for crop sensors

Reading the lens reviews in Pentax forums, I came across an interesting
lens I just had to buy as
the cost is absurdly low (under $45 shipped ). It also has the
distinction

of being the smallest
zoom lens Pentax ever made ( it's barely larger than a F50mm F1.4 ). And
it has a built in macro mode
which gives a usable 1:4 magnification @ 70mm. It has an aperture ring
with the "A" setting for autoexposure on DSLRs and AF too.

What lens am I referring to? The smc Pentax-F 35-70mm F3.5-F4.5 I call
it

a "People" lens
on a crop sensor as the equiv. focal range is 53-105mm, perfect for full
body shots or small groups
to individuals and head shot portraits. Ideal for an all in one family
portrait lens.

While I havent done extensive critical testing yet, initial snapshots
show

outstanding sharpness and contrast throughout the range, very minor and
easily correctable CA, and no PF to speak of, at least stopped down a
little. AF is snappy and accurate, even indoors on my K-5IIs. No
distortion even at 35mm.

As an example of the typical sharpness, Ive posted a macro pic:

are you talking about the smc pentax A 35-105 F3.5? that lens is
outstanding but its big and
heavy and built like a tank but has no AF. otherwise the smc F 35-105 is a
f4-F5.6 lens that

is slower than the smc-F 35-70 F3.5-4.5.

Re: question about zooms and TCs

2018-08-15 Thread J.C. O'Connell
I think the main reason TCs arent recommended with zooms is that if your
shooting
at the short end of the zoom with the TC attached, you would get better
results by

removing the TC and shooting at the long end of the zoom by itself.

Re: Dont miss my Bokina so much now

2018-08-12 Thread J.C. O'Connell
when working with live subjects, the extension of the lens barrel is not
the issue as
to whether they will be "scared off", what is key is the so called working
distance and that
is determined by the focal length of the lens. Longer lens focal length
means greater working distance for a given magnification.

Irfanview replaces Adobe Camera Raw for PS CS2

2018-07-30 Thread J.C. O'Connell

Last week I was looking for solutions for developing K=5IIs raw files

suggested
Irfanview, so I installed the latest version V4.51 64 bit. opening the raw
files
from my istDS to try it, I was disappointed compared to ACR and PS CS2. I
left

Irfanview installed on my system however.

Then later, something interesting happened. While in PS, I opened a istDS
raw file
from the file menu and instead of ACR interface kicking in, an Irfanview
interface
kicked in, with sliders for exposure, shadows, highlights, brightness,
colorspace,
etc and an "open" button. Basically its a replacement for ACR, but if Im
lucky, it
is up to date with all models of pentax DSLRs and it should be able to
open K-5IIs

raw files as well as istDS file.

Anyone else using irfanview interface instead of ACR with PS?

First few are the ones I've already shown, taken from the town of Mount
Shasta.
The next few are shot from an I-5 vista point just after entering
California.
The last few are from Louise road a few miles north of Weed.

I'm using the fluidr link so people can look at the exif data

http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157697414506681

40 seconds and above is shot using astrotracer.
If Mars has lens flare it's shot with the 24/1.4

Many of them were processed using dehaze +50 to bring out the sky.

Some attempts at astro landscapes.

I don't quite have it wired yet, but I'm learning things to try for next
time. These were done with the rokinon 24/1.4 from the town of Mount
Shasta. A couple of these might print up well.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157697414506681

24mm isn't wide enough to get the full arc of the Milkyway, even
positioned vertically.

These were done with the DFA 15-30 using astrotracer from outside of
Weed, just off of I-5. I was hoping the smoke from the fires would be
beneficial for foreground effects, it may have caused more problems,
possibly even the rainbow effect, I'm not sure.

This set doesn't show the ones I tried with the 24/1.4 or the non
astrotracer with the 15-30. I don't think I really got any keepers out
of this set, but I learned a bit.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157698646538354

I should go back at about a half moon so that I can get shots both
with no moonlight and also with Shasta lit after the moon rises.

I need to do more overlap on the frames, particularly with the 15-30
The astrotracer really helps with the sky, and with the dark foreground
doesn't make a lot of difference there.

I should definitely bracket the photos.
I wish there were stacking software that could separate the sky from the
foreground and stack them each appropriately. Also software that could
stitch an astrotracer sky with a non astrotracer foreground, while
stacking them for HDR and panorama.
I also wish the software would use the gps, accelerometer and compass
data to make the stitching go faster.

80-200/2.8 lenses, a tamron SP and a Tokina AT-X, They are both optically

they are bulky so I rarely use them, prefering the A70-210/4 most of the

good customer relations, and those higher in the organization wonder
why no one wants to use the US mail.
I cannot fathom why UPS, FedEx and other delivery businesses would
want to emulate the latest stupidities that strictly enforcing USPS
rules have created.
On the other hand it is disturbing that a signature required tracked
package could be left on one's doorstep, as FedEx did, and be
considered properly delivered, as happened when I ordered my K20D
from B&H photo several years ago.
I guess there's no middle ground, either they follow the rules
exactly or ignore them entirely.

case, I believe, the end result is "as doctor prescribed": the
package was delivered to their outlet, as you requested. So, from
the UPS point of view, - they complied with your request. :-P )
I would argue that it is a feature of any large service system: it
works acceptably well until it breaks; but when it breaks, all hell
breaks loose, and nobody knows what to do.
Speaking of large service "machines": I was greatly impressed with
the design and setup of another large machine: Disneyland. They
have a very complex traffic control/switching, and it is designed
extremely well. But with all of that, the staff is trained well and
they are given enough freedom to think and make decisions on the
spot if needed.

was opening the door, he scanned the parcel, and told me that it

Re: We Tried It: The Pentax K System

My Mamiya 1000TL died about then. I had been shooting with it for years and had
acquired four M42 lenses. So I went to buy a Spotmatic only to find my camera
store had only the new Pentax K cameras. If the counter guy had explained the
screw mount adapter I probably would have gone for a Pentax K. But he didn't,
so I bought a Fuji 801 M42 camera. Good technology and I probably shot over
100,000 frames with it over ten years or so and made quite a bit of money.
Finally got my Pentaxes used in the late '80s. First an H3v, then a bunch of
Spotmatics and Spotmatic Fs. I made up for lost time. Even had an all black
Spotmatic motor drive. Sold that beauty for big bucks to a guy in Japan but
still have my other M42 Pentax cameras. No Ks, but an LX and an MX.

I still have the MX I bought only a year later.

I've often wondered why Pentax introduced two entirely new
body ranges so close together - they must have had the M-series
bodies well on the way to production by the time the KM/KX/K2
were released.

The answer is Market Forces. If you will recall, everyone made big
body SLRs until Olympus shook up the world with the introduction of
the OM-1 system.

The Pentax M series was clearly a response to that.

That's always been my understanding, too. But as John pointed out, the
M series appeared only about a year after the K series. That's a very
short time frame for development and production of a new model. If the
M series was a response to the Olympus OM series, Pentax must have had
prior knowledge that the OMs were coming. A spy at Olympus, perhaps?
:-)
