Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Material Skin
Thanks to all for the advice. I have now created an iPhone shortcut that does the following: Opens a WOL app. Waits a while, Opens Material skin. During the waiting period I can manually get the WOL app to send the wake command. I would really like to do without the manual action. I wonder if any app would allow a shortcut that opens the wake-on-LAN app and automatically sends the wake command. I'll ask this in some of the Mac forums, as it is very specific to iPhone. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109624 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Material Skin
I've just installed Material Skin on my iPhone. Looks nice. I'm wondering if there is a clever way to do one thing I want. My LMS runs on my Mac Mini (using Big Sur). If the Mac is asleep then using the power button on the remote wakes up the server and connects. If I am using the iPhone, I suppose I can use an app like Fing to wake up the Mac, and then switch to Material Skin on Safari to control LMS. But is there any way to avoid having to use first one app (Fing) and then another (Safari)? danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109624 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

I have only just discovered this bookmark. I note that it can be used to bookmark a remote item. I take it this means that I can bookmark a BBC program that I have been listening to using BBC iPlayer. sternenjaeger wrote: > If you want to bookmark a remote track, album or playlist then click in > the "Now Playing" context menu on "Add bookmark for current Playlist" I plainly don't understand some of the basics of LMS or have something set wrong. What is the context menu? I would have guessed that it is the menu I get when pressing the Right button while listening. Archive on 4 is broadcast once a week on Radio 4, but episodes from the past appear frequently on Radio 4 Extra and can push the Radio 4 item down the list. Also, I see that the Radio 4 listing for February 23rd on that page is not the same as it was listed in the Radio Times, so the item broadcast may have changed from what I was expecting and I would not have found it. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110254 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Archive on 4 is a BBC Radio 4 weekly series (Saturdays at 8 p.m.). At one time it was visible in the BBC iPlayer listings. I think it's no longer there, certainly when I looked for last week's episode it wasn't present. I thought it might be among the podcasts shown under iPlayer Extras, but the series wasn't there. There's a problem I have frequently. I have assumed it is a BBC issue, but have decided it is time to post in case it is a problem with the plugin. I am in the UK, and regularly use Listen Again. I find that when listening to Radio 4 the last few seconds of most programs get cut off. So I don't hear the credits, which is a minor issue, but also part of the last sentence (or two) is also missing, which is annoying. Not much point in naming a particular program, as it happens more often than not. I don't get this issue on Radio 2 Listen Again (where programs usually include part of the following news summary) and I don't think it occurs on Radio 3 either. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104672 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

The specific program was the CMA awards (Radio 2, Wednesday 2 p.m.), though the same happened on a later program, but one earlier program I tried worked fine. I was rather surprised that iPlayer Extra and iPlayer gave different result (Extra giving this strange message, and iPlayer running properly for a few seconds and then stopping). Do you recommend using DASH rather than HLS? I think at one point HLS was the preferred (or else I was having problems with DASH) and I have never moved away from that. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer with DASH support - test version
I must admit to being a bit confused as to what the best settings are, and what problems can occur. I am in the UK and always use Listen Again, not Listen Live. Today I got the following. Using iPlayer. Programs seem to run for the first few seconds and then stop. Using iPLayer Extra (Radio 2 for Wednesday) I selected a program in the normal way, but when I tried to play it I got a message "Competition entries have closed" and not the program itself. This happened with several programs, though Radio 4 worked fine. My settings are HLS>DASH for iPlayer, and the checkbox marked for iPlayer Extra (Select if you do not want Dash). iPlayer is 1.4.7 and Extra is 1.9.3. Using a Mac, otherwise I might have tried the latest version of iPlayer. Maybe it is time to change to put DASH first rather than HLS. And while I'm posting can I mention an issue that comes up from time to time that seems different from the rebuffering that people experience. I understand about the six-second chunks. It seems that occasionally the playing gets stuck and after a chunk has been played it just goes back to the start of the chunk, not actually playing anything but counting down for six seconds and then back to the start of the count repeatedly. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104672 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

[SlimDevices: Plugins] BBC iPlayer oddity
I have various problems with BBC iPlayer Listen Again streams cutting out (stopping completely, not just rebuffering) that I am fairly sure are due to problems at my ISP. However, a new issue has come up in the last couple of days, using iPlayer Extra Listen Again. The stream will suddenly stop producing sound, and the Now Playing display will recycle the time. That is the time remaining will show (say) 20 minutes 45 seconds, count down to 20 minutes 40 seconds and then go back to 20.45 and again. What's happening here, and can I do anything about it? I've found Listen Again hopelessly unreliable since the BBC change in February (was that when it was), with programs just stopping in the middle, but that does seem to be my ISP not coping with the repeated change in URL that I gather the new chunking method uses. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer Plugin (UK only)
I don't know if this is a pure coincidence, but when I tried Listen Again (as with everyone else, getting nothing playing) Little Snitch (program that blocks outgoing connections until they are authorised) reported that Perl was trying to connect to zdnet.com and (on another try) to quantservere.com. Can't see why trying to play a radio stream should want a connection there, but I wasn't knowingly doing anything else involving perl at the time. Sometimes Little Snitch has blocked a genuine connection (on the macromedia port 1935) and the stream only started playing when I allowed this. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53229 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

As so often happens, the problem disappears after posting about it. I have just been listening to a Listen Again programme for two hours, with only a couple of very short drops. The problem could have been with my internet connection, but I have a feeling that it was somewhere else, that something is going on that clears up after the SB has been on (not standby) for an hour or so. And that this has to work itself through again after each time I turn the computer on. My normal practice is to keep the computer on for weeks at a time, so I would not normally run into such a situation, but my recent need to shut it down several times might have led to the issue. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101437 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

The attempts to use ReallyPreventStandby I proposed earlier in this thread, and also the new version of PreventStandby in the current 7.8 nightlies, do not reliably get in fast enough to set the power assertion before that timeout. This is largely due to the 60 sec polling approach that these plugins take. I think this explains why on occasions when I have turned the player on it will say waking server, connecting to server and then almost immediately can't connect. I suspect it also explains why a second attempt always seems to work. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95980 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Once that has expired a WOL does not keep ML awake for another idle period. This is why we are trying to find a solution. I don't think your earlier explanations were clear on this. If I now understand you correctly, there would be other situation where this would apply. For instance, if the Mac wakes of its own accord (say, to perform the daily tasks) it would not stay awake for the period set in Energy Saver. As I have also said before I think Apple have it right with ML. It is now up to developers to use the tools properly, (And I do know about legacy programs which will not be fixed but caffeinate and a corresponding GUI will provide a solution for that.) We seem to agree on this. I must have been misinterpreting you earlier, because I thought you were arguing that such a solution was a bad thing. Caffeinate is fine for interactive use when the Mac is already awake, directly, or indirectly from scripts, but to call after WOL will give us race conditions in my view. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] OSX Mountain Lion sleep issues
So, is this a simple change that we can make for ourselves, or does it require a modified plugin? If the latter, can you post your modification. I would be prepared to try it, though my own solution seems to be working for me at the moment. I have had no problems with WOL. Maybe my answer is not subject to the problem you report. But more likely that issue depends on the model of Mac that one has. I am using a 2007 iMac. I do agree that the best solution is for LMS to deal with the issue in its own code, but I don't see that we will have to set the assertions within LMS itself, when ReallyPreventStandby works, rather that it would be *much* neater. The one advantage of my approach is that it does provide a double-clickable way of preventing sleep, whatever else is going on. That is something I find useful. For instance, at the moment I m expecting an instant message from a friend so like to have my Mac awake with display awake, so as to make it easy to check if there is a message. Power assertions would not be the way to go with Messages/iChat, since most of the time one does not need to keep the machine awake, it is just a personal preference. Another case where power assertions wouldn't work is VisualHub, which still works fine but is not being developed further, so we are stuck with it as it is. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95980 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] OSX Mountain Lion sleep issues
nonnoroger wrote: It is a simple change to the plugin that you can make for yourself once it is installed. See next post for the modification. But let me clarify once again. ReallyPreventStandby still relies on polling every 60 seconds. There is an almost inevitable race condition that depends on the precise timing of asynchronous events that leads in my testing to the Mac occasionally going back to sleep after WOL before caffeinate has set the power assertion. For similar reasons, it sometimes goes back to sleep too early - ignoring the set grace period in the settings of Really PreventStandby. I asked if others wanted to try it nevertheless so we could get an idea of just how often this happens in practice. Sorry but again I seem to have failed to help you understand my point. It is not an issue with WOL in general but with WOL from a Squeezebox when ReallyPreventStandby is polling every 60 seconds. Hopefully, other applications that use WOL will do what is necessary themselves. The nature of the race condition will no doubt change depending on how many cores the processor has. I run LMS on a late 2009 Mac Mini. It is not just a question of neatness. It is only with LMS creating and releasing its own power assertions that we will be able to reliably avoid the race conditions explained above. Of course, I too would like Caffeine or something like it to work reliably again (I have had no response from the developers). But that is a different solution to a different problem I felt some of your earlier posts implied that you did not like the idea of Caffeine. It seems I was wrong. I have also written to the developer with no reply as yet. I understand about the possibility of a race. What I do not understand is why, after WOL has woken up a Mac, it would ever go to sleep before the idle period as set in Energy Saver. If it stayed awake that long, RPS would always win the race. That's why I was suggesting trying what happens with WOL in other situations. I note that a Google search does reveal some issues with WOL, for instance https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3735289?start=0tstart=0. When I have a bit of time, I'll follow your instructions on reworking RPS, much neater than mine. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95980 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] OSX Mountain Lion sleep issues
Couple of thoughts on your solution. The -i switch should not be necessary, as the default is to prevent idle sleep. For debugging purposes, caffeinate -di might be good. That prevents both display sleep and idle sleep, which makes checking easier in step 14. Yes I first found the issue with BBCiPlayer. But of course it also happens when playing tracks from a local library on an external drive. Interestingly, the latest version of Get iPlayer Automator specifically states that on ML it prevents sleep while downloading. As for ReallyPreventStandby, I have now followed up my earlier posts, and have a shell script to prevent standby and one to permit standby once the SB is idle. I haven't fully checked with Activity Monitor or the like, but I don't think my inhibit standby script does repeatedly spawn a process. The trick is, yo check whether a process (my Dummy application) is already running, and to do nothing if it is. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95980 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

That is, they would sleep even when there was hard drive activity, although Apple specifically stated that hard drive activity prevented sleep. It would have been a nice feature if Logitech/SlimDevices had worked round this, but it was hardly a bug . I am not sure if you mean it is an issue for Apple to sort out or an Apple-specific issue for Logitech. My view is that Apple at last have it right. I think it is great that my Mac Mini will at last go to sleep reliably after the time I have set in preferences. It is each App that knows best whether it needs to override these defaults. With the power assertions they have at last given the tools that allow App developers to implement this. I agree with you. Power assertions seems a good way to go. I wonder if Apple just decided that hard drive activity simply did not prevent sleep reliably enough, and decided to provide power assertions. Sorry but this is the wrong way round. We should not need Caffeine anymore if developers cotton on and adapt their programs for ML. I would worry that providing such a menu bar facility would give developers a get-out from doing so. Using caffeinate directly from the command line gives us all we really *need* in the mean time - apart from convenience. We should not need third party sleep timers or third party keep-awake timer kludges. Logitech, along with other developers need to be pushed to take advantage of power assertions under ML. I partly agree. Certainly developers need to take advantage of power assertions. I am not sure that it is a matter of pushing, as developers do need time to respond to the changes in ML. caffeinate from the command-line is, as you say, all we *need*, but a double-clickable file (even if not a menu bar item) is *much* more convenient. I have several programs that are still useful but are no longer being developed, so caffeinate (via command-line or shell script) is needed. And others where from time to time I want my computer and display awake, so that I can see what is going on with them. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95980 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Many many thanks to those of you who have been working to put together a workaround but I feel it needs to be sorted by Logitech. I think you are a bit hard on Logitech. Mountain Lion introduced a new sleep policy (hard drive activity is ignored in resetting the sleep timer, only keyboard or mouse activity counts) that might not have made it into the final version of ML, so it wasn't really something to concentrate on. And ML has been out for less than a month. Also, it is primarily an Apple issue, as any program that runs for a long time without human interaction (large downloads, video conversion, etc) gets caught. If you look at the Mountain Lion section of Apple support community, the thread help with caffeinate, you will find, as soon as I have time to put it up, instructions on how to write your own script to keep a Mac awake. Someone else will need to write a simple program to put this in the menu bar, in the way that Caffeine did. I know a fair bit about this kind of problem, because of the reverse issue. My Mac running Snow Leopard refuses to go to sleep according to the Energy Saver settings. That got solved by using a third party sleep timer, but those were not reset by hard drive activity. So I had to use Jiggler or Caffeine to keep the Mac awake when I needed to (or Really Prevent Standby or Sever Power Control for Squeezebox use). danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95980 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] OSX Mountain Lion sleep issues
I'm getting further into things. I'm not sure if the ps -ax bit needs = 1 or = 0. I think it may be 1 when run from the terminal but 0 when part of a shell script. You can't use caffeinate on a Mac application, only on a Unix command. So the caffeinate line needs to be caffeinate -i open -W path to Waiter.app I have seen suggested that it should be open -W -a but I don't know why this should be. It may not apply in this case. The -W is important, as caffeinate only stops sleep as long as open is running, and without the -W this just opens the application and is then finished, while with -W open remains active until the application is quit. One can perhaps tidy up the script with a parameter to put Waiter into the background (I think it is -g) plus a line (using osascript -e to call an Applescript) to put Terminal into the background. It looks to me as though Really Prevent Standby itself would work using a suitable shell script along those lines to prevent standby rather than the default option. I'll be happy to test if Gordon or anyone want to work it out further, or I might find the time to try it myself, now that I know how to use caffeinate. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95980 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] OSX Mountain Lion sleep issues
I haven't tested this yet, and I'm not experienced with scripting. But I think the following or something like it would work under Server Power Control. 1. Create a program that does very little. The Applescript delay 10 saved as a stay-open application would do (stay open is important). Give it a name such as Waiter (perhaps better would be something more complicated such as MyPersonalWaiter in case Waiter is part of the name of some other process). 2. Now create a shell script whose active content is if [ $(ps -ax | grep -c [: print:]*Waiter) = 1 ] then open -g pathtoWaiter.app caffeinate pathtoWaiter.app fi where pathtoWaiter.app os the full path to the application. (I had to put in a space between : and p else it would have come out as a smiley) The logic is as follows The $( ) bit counts the number of running processes containing the word Waiter. There will always be one (that is, if these were Terminal lines, not sure if that also applies as a shell script) because the actual grep message provides one such process, but more than one if Waiter is running. So the condition holds only when Waiter is not running. If Waiter is already running nothing happens At that point Waiter gets opened in the background and caffeinate prevents sleep while Waiter is running. We should then be able to use this as the shell script for ServerPowerControl to run. One advantage of this script is that it can be used to prevent sleep whenever we want, not just for LMS issues. I'll experiment further, but better coders than me might like to try themselves. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95980 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

The Jiggler scripts are #!/bin/bash osascript -e 'tell application Jiggler to launch' to turn it on and #!/bin/bash osascript -e 'tell application Jiggler to launch' to turn it off. These are shell scripts. The first line I think defines what shell is being used. osascript calls an Applescript, and the -e flag says that the line between the two occurrences of ' is the script. For multi-line scripts you can either use -e '...' -e '...' repeatedly, one line at a time, or omit the -e and call a file. I seem to remember that if you tell application Jiggler to activate this starts it and brings it to the front, whereas launch keeps it in the background. Caffeine on the Mac should be running all the time as a menu bar item that you can click on, and the Applescripts would be tell application Caffeine to turn on and tell application Caffeine to turn off -- danco danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48521 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

And then I use SvrPower Control to run this program while my SB is active and to turn it off when idle. -- danco danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48521 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

Or did the plugin do anything wrong? It may be that trying to make a plugin that works across different operating systems generates spurious error messages. I say this because things like chown work on files and folders, and the message not a directory may be no more than a warning. Are the relevant files mentioned in the logs present in /usr/local/sbin (/usr is normally invisible, but can be reached using the Go menu in the Finder)? Does the plugin work? -- danco danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48521 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl
Should the custom commands work on the Radio? I have gone to the Server Power Control item on my Home Page, and selected a command. SPC reports that it will run the command in 15 seconds, and then reports that it has run the command. But the command is not actually run on my Mac. I take it that the automatic action on not-idle is not intended to be carried out, and that one has to choose from the menu. Or is that supposed to work, but just failing in the same way that the items chosen from the menu are failing? -- danco danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48521 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
