No no need to install 9.0c. My Vista installation is as it came from the DVD with Dx10 and nothing else. After installing the sdk and running the demo it just worked. I don't believe the sdk installs any other version of Dx. This is also consistent with my other 2 PCs that already had 9.0c

You do need to have DirectX 9.0c installed - 10 won't work. I would suggest getting the redistribution one instead of the SDK one, though. Also expand the download into a directory that is not in program files or some other protected area to actually install it from. I used c:\temp. Also run
