Thanks for the heads up Ted. Don't think it'll help my problem at home, my ISP just sucks.. (COX) Though for commercial, it does better, but still has issues. Follow-up: I disabled 802.11ac on the 5 Ghz band on the router and the laptop stabilized. Go ahead, you explain it. A friend tells me that one of the "features" shipped in this month's Monthly Update was a re-ordering of the priorities for accessing protocols on the Wifi, and that might cause problems if your WiFi adapter or router offers some protocols but they're not well-implemented/broken. Perhaps this clue might help someone. Absolutely! Chromebooks rock! I picked up a 15" ASUS with 1920x1080, 2Gb, 16 Gb SSD, refurb ~$150, and it is pretty much the perfect Net Computer we've been promised for a decade or more. With that as a front end, and Chromecast hooked up to the TV as the back end, it's a pretty good little browser and entertainment center, decent webmail interface, etc. However, when you're dealing with Windows, locally or remote, you're dealing with all the joy MS packed into it: security flaws, unsafe software, shaky updates, 32-/64-bit incompatibilities, weird network behavior, etc. ___ Post Messages to: ProFox@leafe.com Subscription Maintenance: http://mail.leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://mail.leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/cacw6n4v98k+jneqyqo7v2gts8wrahxrbysukwg6k_b4kwzy...@mail.gmail.com ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice. Re: [NF] Windows updates August problems?
I spent about 7 hours on the phone with about 7 to 10 different people at Microsoft the first time we ran into that. They were more interested in passing me off to someone else rather than coming up with a solution. About the 3rd person I had talked to at least gave something that works, but not in every case. We had to: pull the power cord and wait 30 seconds before plugging it back in and trying again. Works on some of the machines. through trial and error, we came up with these: pull the network cable - works on some. pull the USB dongle for wireless mouse/keyboard - works on some, hold down the left shift key while booting - works for 1 machine. for my laptop, I have to pull the battery, sometimes have to do it 3 or 4 times before it works. combination of the above - works on some. A complete fustercluck if I ever saw one! Also, there's an issue that you are just moving the problem to the remote end. One of my VFP clients has a terminal service hosted at a datacenter and an IT staff to manage the machine, but they still run into mind-bending issues when updates come out, locking up VMs, blocking printing, etc. And it's our fault, since our app isn't working . ___ Post Messages to: ProFox@leafe.com Subscription Maintenance: http://mail.leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://mail.leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/CACW6n4utkwhxoRhuM5hiyszAOUzrDcO5U9g1T=F5YX=kzh0...@mail.gmail.com ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice. And as a double-bonus, if you had any updates hidden, say because they corrupted your machine, the cumulative update un-hid them so they get applied and, *boom*. How can you not love the company that does this? I DO! I DO love them! We STILL do not have any Windows 10 machines (and I have ten never-used Win 7 boxes still in inventory for future expansion) for this reason. But see, I think that the Windows 10 forced update "feature" is actually a design bug that has caused Microsoft to achieve only 50% of its projected adoption rate for this OS (even though they gave away most of those adoptions for free and deliberately tricked and defrauded a lot of people into the "adoption"). Eventually somebody over there is going to wake up and realize this fact, and fix it. They keep inching toward it with some little change every few months. So when they finally return to full user-control of updates, then I will be able to avail myself of what is otherwise, according to many reports, a pretty good operating system. We STILL have about half our machines at work and my personal laptop, that won't reboot properly after some updates. Get the black screen with the spinning white dots forever. The only common thing between them is they are all Dells. Microsoft is really beginning to bug me (more so now then ever!). I've pretty much worn out the power switch. Windows ALWAYS should be rebooted after updates, I think, because the MS engineers just don't understand how all the caching and retained-in-memory.-DLLs and write caching and such actually work in the real world of heterogenous machines, OSes, etc. The biggest problem with this one is all the background processes. With a high-end processor, too much RAM and HDD, the machine loads ~100 processes at startup, and stuff starts updating and caching and so forth. Without digging into the Task Manager, there's no clue to the operator that anything is happening other than the machine is really slow and unresponsive.
