Morning Fern, most unices come with dd, which can be used to generate raw media images. I know. :-) But the image itself then cannot be read unless you have a QDOS Filesystem driver installed either as a module or as a "fuser" system. It's easy enough to duplicate a QDOS floppy using dd to an image. But you can't do anything with the image unless you have tools that can read it. It would be nice(r) to be able to mount the image as a floppy disc (using loop device) and then access it as a "floppy". That's the state I'm attempting (when time permits) to get to. At the moment, the image can be read by the ctools utility - at least, I think that's the correct name. Bryan, Not sure where that information came from! My USB floppy works fine on my Note books PC under Windows 7. I often use it in conjunction with QPC, although it is also used directly from Explorer under Windows 7. I can also use the floppy from a VMWare VM with no issue regardless of what OS the VM is running. I wonder if that information is due to the fact that most modern machines will not allow for booting from a floppy by default (not unreasonable as they no longer have a drive fitted by default). To enable booting from a USB floppy will nearly always require the BIOS settings on the PC to be adjusted from the defaults, but I have yet to encounter a PC that does not allow that as long as one knows what you are doing. Click on UNBLOCK, it will now run. But next time you start the program, it is BLOCKED again. I had a look at the QL2K.LOG (which I have sent to Jimmy, author of QL2K) and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong, although Jimmy will know better than me how to interpret the results and look for a clue in the file. Someone kindly sent me a known working version from their 64-bit Program Files folder. The first page seems to be all about: * Win7 not (always( recognising USB floppies * Win7 corrupting floppies during formatting * Win7 not writing to floppies * Etc. So, it appears that floppies might be supported but that the support is a tad on the flaky side. Only 1TB? Surely you must have more than that! ;-) Yes! Only 1TB on the old PC itself in its internal drives. My calculator gives an overflow error when I try to work out the grand total including everything else ;-) I can see that turning off UAC would benefit in some ways, although I don't mind being asked every time I start a program if it makes my computing safer when something tries to write to somewhere it shouldn't. That's the best that Windows 7 can offer? Linux has been doing that (under KDE at least) since I first started using it. Back in 2001. Fair comment. I had something called Aquasnap on XP which let XP do some of the things Win7 can do. But QPC2 and a few other programs left "footprints" all over the screen as it moved around, so Aquasnap was of limited to use. However, I'm man enough to agree that there are things it does better than Linux. I mentioned the Blue Ray DVDs as one example. When I come up with another, I'll let you know! The 64-bit version shows the UNBLOCK button now, so (admitting my lack of knowledge here) it is probably not unblocked. UAC queries and if I allow it, it starts normally. Is this what you might expect? UAC still queries when it starts of course (I expect it's because QL2K writes its log file in the Program Files folder as it starts.) That's correct. Windows doesn't like you doing that any more. Jimmy suggested installing in something like C:\jadiam.org\QL2K instead of Program Files. BTW, back to topic, amid all the winding up of Norman, I somehow got QL2K working. Worst part is I don't know what I did, as it happened at a step when I made 3 changes so I don't know which of them got it going. Really strange, I'd understand it if Windows or QL2K gave an error message when QL2K failed to start. But nothing. It asked for permissions etc, a few seconds of the circular egg timer then nothing! I have now got both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions running in their respective folders. Normally a daft thing to do I suppose, as I'll have to duplicate copying things into both, but at least I can run both and test software on both. UAC still queries when it starts of course (I expect it's because QL2K writes its log file in the Program Files folder as it starts.) But the mysterious non-appearance of the program has stopped for some reason. Probably until the next time I reset the PC. Jimmy Montesinos has asked me to zip up the content of the QL2K folder and offered to take a look to see if I've somehow installed it wrong or something. But first I need to download a 7-zip or something. To be fair, QL2K is the only program so far I've had these problems with, and it ain't a program I'll be using regularly. Many of these problems with older XP-era apps can be traced to permissions. Try assigning full permissions to the folder in which you install the program and you _may_ find that all your difficulties go away. As for the utterly absurd decision to implement a 32 bit program folder called "Program Files (X86)" ... I can only wonder at the kind of twisted mind that dreamed such a thing up. ;) Adrian www.memorylanecomputing.com > -Original Message- > From: ql-users-boun...@lists.q-v-d.com [mailto:ql-users-bounces@lists.q-v- > d.com] On Behalf Of Malcolm Lear > Sent: 23 August 2011 10:53 > To: ql-us...@q-v-d.com > Subject: Re: [Ql-Users] QL2K on Windows 7 > Welcome to the worst Windows ever!!! Morning all, Dilwyn Jones (breaking [in] a Windows 7 64 bit PC) Oh oh! You thought 32 bit Windows was trouble, welcome to your worst nightmare! :-( > It should be in c\Program Files (x86)\q-emulator As Rich points out, Windows 7 decided that all 32 bit applications should live in a folder structure that prevents (most/some) of them from working because there are "invalid characters" in the path name - a lot of applications really don't like the '(' and ')' characters in the path name. backwards compatibility my arse! I've got a few programs at work that are 32 bit and completely fail to run under Windows 7 at all. Even from the so called 32 bit compatibility side of things. We've had to install the huge Windows 32 bit emulator with a version of XP running in it to get these to work. Sigh. c\Program Files is for 64 bit executables. Indeed it is. And only for 64 bit executables. Don't even thing about trying to begin to consider attempting to try and put anything non-64 bit in here, or Bill Gates will come out of retirement and hunt you down! ;-) And another thing, if your application attempts to write to files in it's own folder beneath c:\program files or c:\program files (x86) then you MUST have administrator rights or it simply fails. All application files, ini files etc MUST now be stored under the c:\documents and settings\your name (or whatever it is called this week!) This is something that MS started to do under Vista and they have continued the hardship into Windows 7. It's a right PITA for people/developers selling application that need to store their own config etc files and now, MS prevents you from doing so. They must be stored in what MS refer to as your "local profile". Alternatively, you can turn off User Account Control (UAC) in Windows and your problems will magically "go away". In case you are wondering UAC is that bloody irritating thing that pops up, every time you try to do something, and asks you: * Are you sure you want to do this? * Are you really sure? * How sure are you really? * Have you got a note from your parents to allow yo to do this? * Are you sure you have a note? * Etc etc etc If you have Vista, or Windows 7, you'll most likely have met UAC. How to turn it off? Vista: http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm Win7: http://www.petri.co.il/disable-uac-in-windows-7.htm I'm sure the above will work fine. I have not tried it as I simply don't use Vista or Windows 7. I did try Win7 as it came on my laptop. Never again! My advice to Dilwyn is simple, if you ever want to stop effing about with Windows and having to rebuild your PC from the bits that survived a heave out of the nearest (open I hope) window, install Linux. I thoroughly advice Linux Mint 11 as it still uses Gnome 2. Ubuntu - much favoured by many - has gone over to Gnome 3 which is bloody awful. (Other opinions are available - but they are wrong!) Linux Mint 11 have everything you need to listen to music, watch DVDs etc. And run QPC. However, there are two things I've found it can't do: * Access floppy discs from within QPC. A tad irritating I admit, but as I don't have a floppy on my laptop, not too big a problem! * Play Blue Ray DVDs. Apparently the encryption used on these (to prevent you playing something you own when you go away for a few nights, for example) is such that bypassing it is a tad (a) difficult and (b) set's you up to be prosecuted. I converted a friend of my wife to Linux Mint 9 some time back and she swears by it now. No more long long startup times etc for her. Hi Dilwyn, Can you check out QL2K.log and send it me by email. You may prefer using private email for that. I'm using this 64 Bits versions very often without any issues on Vista and 7. This 64 bits should be installed in the regular Program Files but I haven't took the time to rewrite the installer. Cheers. Phill. Good news. I looked at the MESS emulator in Quanta a few years ago - Vol 25 ssue 3 June/July 2008 page 42. The name stands for Multiple Emulator Super System For those who aren't aware of it, it's a multiple emulator system which you can use to emulate your favourite arcade game machine or retro computer - about 250 computer systems when I last looked. The QL emulation always made it hard to save/load so adding floppy disk access or microdrive images would mean one more usable QL emulation! Re: [Ql-Users] QL2K and Info-Zip
Having been inspired to fire up my copy of QL2K and play with Dilwyn's Snowfall program, and the FizzBuzz suggestions, I visited his website at http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/ and thought I'd try out some other programs. Firstly I need a working unzip program that preserves the file headers & dataspace. Unfortunately http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/arch/unzip541xq.bin just gives me a "bad parameter" error after I type in the device at the first prompt. Does anyone know if unzip541xq.bin works with QL2K, and if so how? I have never been able to get the SFX (SelfExtract) routine to work on QL2K. Alternatively, is there another way of getting an unzip program to work on QL2K? -- Regards, Stephen Yes. Try this, I've just run it to make sure it works. Place a copy of QL unzip in QL2K's WIN1_ folder in Windows. Unzip it with a Windows zip if you wish. Don't worry about losing the dataspace/executable header - QDOS Unzip has something called an XTcc field, which will a;llow QLAYT to recover the dataspace. Assuming you have QLAYT program (not the qltoolsq program, that's for floppies) in QL2K's WIN1_ folder in Windows: Start a DOS (cmd) box. Navigate to the QL2K WIN1_ folder with CD commands in the Windows DOS box. Issue the DOS command: QLAYT -i Unzip -X (note: lower case -i, upper case -X) This appends Unzip to the qlay.dir directory and recovers the dataspace from the XTcc field. That's it - when you start QL2K you should now have a working Unzip in QL2K. (Thanks to QLToday's article in Vol 12 issue 2 by David Denham - very useful article for QLay users, mostly valid for QL2K too, taught me a lot about qltoolsq and qlayt) Would be great if someone could adapt a FLP driver to add to QL2K, e.g. QDOS classic drivers or something like that. QL2K is fine as an emulator, but the file transfer difficulties puts a lot of people off. Dilwyn Jones ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Hi All, Some QL2K users have seen that there is some malfunctions with the help page of QL2K. That wasn't a problem of QL2K itself but this was a problem with my website architecture. I finally solved this small but multiple problems by changing many stuffs on this architecture. That was not so easy because there is a lot of things to manage together between internet supplier, hosting services, firewall, networking, software, routing, referencing, moving sites and so on... The long time of this resolution was mainly due to lack of spare time too. There is some small others changes that will occur in the near future but there will not have major dysfunction anymore. For example, we are thinking to rebuild completely the website to a new more attractive design. I'm apologize for problems generated. Yes, I use an old Epson Stylus Colour which happens to have it all - USB, parallel, Epson control codes (no QPCprint needed!) - in fact all I lack is a parallel cable to test it with, and I'm too mean to buy one without knowing it would work. It seems that there is an "index" file in the folder being > used for the emulator file storage. How does one handle this? The files in my QL2K setup (laptop, WinXP Home) appear in directories, each with an index file "qlay.dir" which stores the file headers. The reference to these directory paths has to be set using the [WIN MDV] button during boot-up but once WIN1_, WIN2_ etc have been assigned and QL2K booted one can list files with "dir win1_" etc. and save and load as normal. An empty Win directory contains only a zero-byte "qlay.dir" file, and to that directory programs & files can then be saved. I suggest you refer your member to http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/A.Jaw.Venema/ where the QLAYT tool may be found, which can be used to create these structures. It has a good manual which explains the process although the command-line is fiddly to use. Using this, however, I have set some twenty directories which are copies of my old QL floppy disks. From these I then copied files into more useful larger directories. Microdrive emulation is more complicated with a single hard-disk file containing a number of QL files. If the reference to these is not set during boot-up then a simple "dir" will fail with the familiar "not found" error. QLAYT can convert to and from these formats too. -- Regards, Stephen ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
