2018-04-13 Thread Philip Williamson
This is a beautiful bike, Bill. The Legolas is one of my all-time favorite
Rivendell bikes.
I appreciate you pointing out the difference between a cyclocross bike and
an all-rounder. I once asked Ira Ryan if a cyclocross bike was a good
do-all bike for most people, expecting him to be enthusiastic about it, but
he flatly said, "No. A cyclocross bike is a race machine." I was like, "Oh.
That makes sense." Stuck with me.

Congrats, I expect your going to be very happy. There are a lot of beautiful
details on the Roadini frames (love the chainstay shaping, the stay ends at the
rear drop outs, the ball socket seat lug, the filed fork ends, etc etc etc),
and of course it will ride like a riv which in my experience has always been a
very good thing.

2018-04-13 Thread tc
Gotcha, Ted, thanks so much for the descriptive info. I ordered a
Roadini. Supporting Riv, and less stem and seat post showing, plus what I
take to be a more refined frame sold me. I have no doubt that the BMC
could be made to work; but, I felt better after talking with Riv that a
Roadini would be the ticket for me personally. 10 years ago the decision
might be different.

Re: [RBW] Re: BMC Road vs Roadini

2018-04-13 Thread ted
Regarding the BMC road Tom writes "... better for the more flexible Gumby
types"
I don't think that is accurate. My BMC is much more aggressive/gumbyish
than my wife's Roadini, but that is largely because that is what I was
going for. I've got a -17deg 13cm stem on my BMC with 7.5mm of spacers
under it. That puts my bars ~3in below the saddle and gives the reach I
like (originally I tried a 12cm stem and I prefer the 13). This is on a
frame that is a size smaller than I initially thought I would buy. If I
wanted a more relaxed position going up a size or two, using some spacers,
and selecting a -6deg stem would have done that. I'm pretty sure you can
set up a BMC road with a similar position to the one you would set up on a
Roadini.

I think the real discriminators are stem style (threadless vs quill), and
aesthetics (e.g. lugs vs tig, tt slope, paint etc). They are both great
bikes, size either to get the position you want and you won't go far wrong.

Me too, Chris. I was shocked by the difference. It was in sunlight when my wife
brought it home yesterday and I brought it in, but it was late afternoon, so
the sun went down soon after. I was stunned to see how dark it looked. I had to
wait till this morning to see if my eyes or brain were playing tricks on me.
Nope. It really is that stunning. In the photos, I compared the realitive
contrast between the pin striping and the headbadge to get some idea of
calibration of light change (if that makes sense).

Thanks, Phil!

With abandon,

[RBW] Re: BMC Road vs Roadini

2018-04-13 Thread ted
Tom,

She said something like oh they are so different. I'm not sure I'll get a
response from her that will satisfy your interest. She does describe both
as seeming light and responsive. In lieu a more extensive response from her
I will offer that:
The Roadini has a 34/48 crank from RBW and drop bars (nitto dream I think),
and compass 32mm tires. The Hilborne has a typical RBW crank (24/36/46 I
think), albatross bars, and until a day or two ago 40mm fatty rumpkin tires
(now it has 38mm compass tires). I suspect that the differences in the way
she experiences the two bikes stems far more from the bars and the tires
than the frames (keeping in mind of course that the Roadini probably
wouldn't fit 38mm tires).
This spring we have been doing training rides sponsored by a local club as
prep for the "cinderella classic" tomorrow. When she started doing those
she was riding the Roadini. She had some problems with upper back and neck
which were the limiting factors for how long she felt she could ride. At my
suggestion she tried riding the Sam instead, which went well, and that will
be the bike she rides for the event tomorrow. In riding with her I haven't
noticed her being faster or slower on either bike.

hope some of that is some help, though I fear it may not be
ted

Called Riv. They say there's a def difference in the ride of the Roadini

it.

I fantasize about long tours with gobs of stuff. It will likely never

What I DO do often is just get out and ride 15 to 35 mi, without anything

Sounds like BMC bikes are very nice, and you get a lot for the $$, but more
aggressive in stance and therefore better for the more flexible "Gumby"

Why not have it repaired and wrap the heat damaged paint area with 3M

It's definitely worth fixing. I was heart broken when my first Ram was
smooshed by a carless driver with me aboard. I'm on my second orange Ram.
I'd have the brake bridge repaired and come up with some funky solution to
the repaint of the area. Think of it as a war wound and wear it with pride.

That is a fact. Dremel is a weight savings tool. I did cut off the
seatpost to 2.5" of sunk depth and that saved me 22g. I celebrated the 52g
of chain I got to cut off, thanks to my 1x drivetrain and SHORT
chainstays. The steertube weight reduction was 49g.

Maybe I'll do some skids to lighten up the tires. :)

[RBW] Re: Bill's 57cm Legolas build thread

2018-04-13 Thread Bill Lindsay

I have it built enough to weigh it and ride it around the block. It's
confirmed at 19.3 pounds. The only stuff to be added are bar tape and a
bottle cage:

The build bits that have been added are a Dura Ace 10sp rear der + indexed
barcon shifter. A SRAM 1091 chain. Paul Minimoto brakes, upgraded to
metal brakepad holders and koolstop pads. SRAM carbon brakelevers. My
gram-counting spreadsheet has me at 8785g total, which is 19.35 pounds.
You always add a tiny bit of mass, greasing threads and such, but I still
hope to be at 19.5 when it's totally done. 32mm road tires will have it
under 19lbs.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqabeam Quickapillar Frame Finished!

2018-04-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Well worth reading. I find The Hobbit delightful, and have read it through
many times. TLOTR is a children's tale that grew up and, to some extent,
grew out of its genre clothing; it's essentially an ancient epic in the
form of a fantasy novel, but (thank God!) written by someone with very deep
roots indeed in ancient Western epic. So I find that much of it drags,
these sections saved by the author's descriptive imagination and his
language. So, I skim, and do so without embarrassment. Am currently
skimming through it again, for the 50th time or so. I've got the trilogy on
Kindle, as also The Hobbit.

The movies were, unusual for Hollywood (look at the Narnia travesties) kept
close to the books and well done, but the books are better.

Patrick Moore, who has read the Narnia series even more times (starting
when my father began to read them, just published, to us children circa age
5, 4, 2, and -- well, Peter wasn't born yet).

Well done! looking forward to seeing future pics built up and out in the
wild.

Regarding LOTR... I'm a bit ashamed to admit I have not read the trilogy.
I've read the Hobbit several times and always intended to complete the
trilogy but simply never made it a priority for no particular reason. That
will soon change since I've finally bought the set (the hardcover copies
Riv was selling last year) and they are slowly moving up on the to-do
list. I always wanted but hesitated to buy myself copies since most I've
seen anytime the thought occurred while at store had the film covers vs.
the illustrated copies Riv had and I strongly prefer illustrated for my own
book collection. I was very pleased to see Riv selling them when I was
placing an order for other items and added to the cart.

I personally enjoyed the films but never felt the need to purchase the dvds
for regular viewing. Last year I did have my own Hobbit and LOTR movie
marathon while my wife was out of town for a few days, however. At the
time I hadn't re-watched the LOTR films since initial release and had not
yet seen the Hobbit so I watched them all in order over the better part of
a week and borrowed from the local library. Obviously, I could have also
borrowed the books at any time but always thought I'd just buy them
eventually.

Toshi: A bit late to the party, but very nice Roadeo.

How do you like the Kojaks? And why Kojaks rather than a Compass tire? I've
used Kojaks on 3 bikes, and for a "non-premium" tire that resists thorns,
they're pretty good indeed. But I'd think you'd want a premium tire for
such a nice bike.

[RBW] Re: rear racks and long chainstays

That's the nice thing about the Nitto R-14 Rack as a saddlebag support.
You can rotate (and shorten/lengthen) the rear stays to get it in the right
place. It doesn't work very well with panniers, though, which limits its
flexibility.

Thanks Steve (and everyone else who recognized the feeling and sympathized
with my untimely frame failure),

You're right about my Ram being the first generation orange pearlescent
with cream highlights. Same as I rode on the GAP from Cumberland, MD at the
2012 Riv Rally East (I recall your had your cream Kogswell).

Rivendell, to their unparalleled credit had Joe Bell refinish it after a
right dropout replacement a long time ago. It would be incomprehensible for
them to be accountable to any degree of responsibility after the years of
my use and the places I've been on that bike.

Before CycleArt was absorbed by HIA and moved to Little Rock, I got a
colloquial estimate from Greg on the iBOB list of $1100-1200 to replicate
the OEM paint job the Rambouillet had on introduction. That's been a while
now and represents a significant seed I may plant, I had a very nice
conversation with Jeff Lyons yesterday.

Re: [RBW] I think I'm going to throw up

2018-04-13 Thread ascpgh
Patrick,

I can't point to a causative event, only a hazy recollection of some vague
sound that could have been from the rear fender as its mounting tab rotated
a few degrees with the caliper under braking which did not register as the
process of breaking loose.

I've been all over the bike in the last year (almost to the day) when I
changed the brakes to Paul Racers and replaced the fenders. If it has been
gradual, I wasn't seeing cracks in the finish surface being telegraphed to
the surface so I imagine that if it was festering there was some moment
that brought the it to fruition.

It was only when I had it in my work stand and stopped the rear wheel with
the brake to quickly check brake cable tension for lever feel and caught
the flop of the rear caliper which first registered in my mind as something
to do with to a loose mounting bolt. Maybe stopping the unloaded wheel in
the stand did it. Know way to know.

Time to mop up spilled milk, and tears. Waiting to hear from Michael at
Maestro Frameworks whose shop is a block from the house our young friend my
wife and I mentor lives.

[RBW] Re: I think I'm going to throw up

2018-04-13 Thread ascpgh
Kieran,

It's clear in the failed mode that the stay walls were drilled as sockets
for the bridge, so relocating it would would be more of a chore than if its
ends had been mitered and the stay walls left intact.

Even if I opened the rear clearance, I'd have to contend with the fork
clearance. I replaced the dual pivot side pulls with Paul Racers to
optimize clearance for Stampede Pass ELs under the hammered Honjos, a
combination I have really enjoyed.

Sorry, sorry for that.
But ... a few years ago I had the same thing happen to my not too expensive
Centurion and just made a dressing by putting a wooden plate on each side
of the stays and shaping it. Can be done more or less elegant. A variety of
beausage in my view.

your requirements may vary, though
