I’m unaware of what great offerings the market offers.

As far as function goes, I’ve got that figured out. Attached are our

iPhones/keys/essentials. I like both of these bags, but neither holds all

do know that Riv is re-doing some of their Sackville line, so I’ve emailed

we’ll see what those new bags are like.

 Do you have any recommendations?

 -streamlined, unobtrusive
 -zippers preferred
-no garish colors (frame is already a saturated color - raspberry

-hold a 32 oz flask AND an phone/keys/granola bar

[RBW] Re: Clem L arrived, couple of thoughts and questions

2020-08-28 Thread Adam Leibow
My wife has those wheels on her Sam Hillborne and she loves the
multicolored nipples. They are machine built wheels. My theory about all
the braze-ons is they just give you way too many so you can mount any kind
of rack + fenders + reflectors and doo-dads of all sorts. Ultra
flexibility.

[RBW] Re: Locking Up your Riv

2020-06-18 Thread Adam Leibow
I have several locks including the Bordo I bought from Riv. The Bordo is
great since it's more substantial than any cable lock (in that bolt cutters
won't be enough to get through it). I use it as the sole lock only in
"light" lockup situations (areas I feel safe in and for short periods of
time). I live in SF, so usually my lockup situations are "heavy" such that
the Bordo is supplementary to at least one U-lock and I have to strongly
consider whether I can lock up the bike at all. In summary, it's a great
lock whether it's the only lock needed or one of several needed.

[RBW] Re: 59cm Atlantis (current model)

2020-06-15 Thread Adam Leibow
Hi Bryan,

If Steve is correct that your PBH is 87.5cm, then you and I have the same
exact PBH figure. I have owned both the 59cm MIT Atlantis and now own the
55cm MIT Atlantis. The 59 is a BIG 59. I was able to fit well but had less
than 1cm of standover (with big 2.3" tires).

I sold it and later replaced it with the 55, which is a better fit FOR ME
as a mountain bike. I am 5'-9" tall with very long legs for my height. How
tall are you? The 59cm might suit you better in the reach department if you
are lanky, but if you are wary of minimal standover then 55 or 56 might be
more appropriate.

Feel free to reach out if you have specific questions since my experience
might be relevant to you.

-Adam

Cool story! It's awesome that that shop was able to appreciate the bike,
and took such care in doing the work. That is a really nice build. That
being said, I can't imagine how much you spent on all this! One reason I am
able to afford the bikes I have is I can build them myself, which is a huge
savings. Just a thought.

i would like to see what you got. ideal would be something like velocity

also accept a velocity synergy or atlas (slightly wider/beefier rim OK -
but cliffhangers would be too much). i am hoping to spend as close to $200

too depending on how it affects the overall cost.

I had the 32F rack mounted on my sam hillborne successfully with deore V

[RBW] Re: Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-08 Thread Adam Leibow
As someone who's had both the Cheviot and the Clem L, I don't understand
the comments about the Cheviot being lighter or faster. My Cheviot was
neither compared to my Clem L, and it wasn't because of a difference of
part weight or the presence of a rack or not. The builds were almost
identical. I found the Clem L to be more springy and light (maybe not in
actual weight, but in pedal stroke sensation / effort).

However, it could have been the tires. The Cheviot had 2.0" Big Bens and
the Clem L had Compass Antelope Hills (~2.3"). The Big Bens are much
heavier and have more rolling resistance. Perhaps try a lighter, suppler
tire like the Antelope Hill or the Schwalbe G One?

As someone who owns an actually light bike (sub-20lb titanium road bike
with carbon fork and no cargo whatsoever), I really don't see making the
Clem L meaningfully lighter, unless you're talking about big differences
like "front and rear steel racks vs. no racks".

Ride characteristics of a frame and bike fit are just as important to your
speed as sheer bike weight.

[RBW] Re: WTB: 59 MIT Atlantis

2020-04-05 Thread Adam Leibow
Steve, I went through the same thing and tried the 59cm Atlantis because my
friend was selling it for a good deal. It was big for me but I made it
workfor two weeks, then I sold it. Now I have the 55cm, which fits me
well although I am still working out the reach and bar setup. TBH, I know
the OP Mike and I know he would fit the MIT 59cm (55/56 would be too
small).

2020-02-14 Thread Adam Leibow
i agree with this a lot. i sell bike stuff on instagram @adom_sale and it's
super annoying when I list a hot ticket item, one person responds with
"extreme interest" and says they can pay soon, only to go MIA for three
days while four other buyers are lined up, ready to send funds. it's gotten
to the point where i won't hold an item for someone who does this; i just
sell it to the next person in line. too bad for the person who was first in
line.

[RBW] Re: Help me buy a Riv

2020-02-14 Thread Adam Leibow
if you are prioritizing a city build, i'd go with the Homer or Sam. You
don't need the meaty tires of the Atlantis/Cheviot/Joe, and if you do
decide to do some offroad, the Homer & Sam are still great at it. The
bigger-clearance'd, stouter-tubed Rivendells might become annoying if you
are trying to zip through the city all the time. That said, they'd still be
pretty darn fun.

[RBW] Re: In your opinion, what's missing from the Riv lineup?

2020-02-14 Thread Adam Leibow
I think they should widen the tire clearance on a Homer, but keep the
lighter tube spec. This would be an all-day rider (not a tourer) but with
2.2" clearance for extreme fire roads and easier single track, a la Crust
Bombora or Black Mtn Cycles monster cross. Perfect bike for a mixed terrain
brevet.

[RBW] Re: Narrow-wide 1x chain ring question

2020-01-21 Thread Adam Leibow
IME oven cleaner was not strong enough to remove the black finish from a
Raceface chainring, so someone recommended lye, which is serious stuff. I
never ended up buying/using lye, but it's probably a strong bet to remove a
finish from an anodized part.

Also IME most or all narrow wide chainrings are all branded for no fewer
than 10 speeds; you will probably not find one stamped 9speed or 8speed.
They'll still work fine with an 8spd or 9spd chain, just make sure your
drivetrain is clean and lubricated adequately.

[RBW] Re: Switching Appaloosa from 700 to 650b

2020-01-06 Thread Adam Leibow
I have some bikes with virtually 0" standover which I ride fairly
aggressively offroad. In my experience if you bail on a trail you do not
sit down on the top tube with your legs perfectly extended downwards,
rather throw the bike down sideways and dip off to the side in 99/100
cases. I had a 59cm MIT atlantis (too big for me) briefly that I rode on
some rocky-rooty-muddy trails and did not feel concerned about the absence
of standover. If I were you I would continue riding the 62cm especially if
you find it fits you well. If you simply can't get comfortable with the
knowledge that there is no standover, I would buy the size smaller before
going through the hassle (and possibly botched geo) of having a
framebuilder move the brake posts. just my opinion

Re: [RBW] Re: What does a BMC Monstercross weigh?

2019-12-19 Thread Adam Leibow
Scott, handling is normal/fine although I think the stem could be 10-20mm
longer to fit optimally (i go back and forth on that which is why I haven't
made the change yet). I highly recommend this bike, rides zippily like a
Homer and the color options are great this batch. It handles well on single
track. I ride it around golden gate park trails here in SF. Also, here is a
video edit I made riding the Road Plus on Mt. Tamalpais dirt roads:

if it were me, i would see if i could find a used wheelset at the same
pricepoint but with more classic parts (non-disc hubs, more silver parts).
you could, as someone else mentioned, do a want-to-buy post for a wheelset
at $150.

[RBW] Re: Choco vs choco-moose

2019-11-18 Thread Adam Leibow
IME anything "-moose" is triangulated and therefore stiffer (can equate to
harsher riding); the benefit is it's more rugged for heavy duty riding and
stiffer (if you are a bigger rider with a heavy pedal this can be a pro).
one other benefit of "-moose" is your bars will never slip down.

[RBW] Re: Make my AHH look less tempting!

2019-09-27 Thread Adam Leibow
i lock up all my rivendells all over san francisco, and it might be safe to
say san francisco is worse than the town in the UK for bike theft. & i have
never had a bike stolen (i even went to UCSB). i attribute this to a couple
of factors:
- i always lock my bike in a bright prominent area with a lot of foot
traffic (nearby a hotel main entrance, for example). bonus points if you
can see your bike from wherever it is you'll be going.
- i go crazy overboard on locks. u lock for the frame, second u lock/abus
bordo for the front wheel, small abus chain lock through saddle and rear
wheel. remove all bags.
- always bring bike inside whenever possible.

some ideas for making the bike look shittier than it is:
- plastic grocery bag wrapped around saddle
- ratty/worn/stained bar tape (un-shellacked cloth tape is great for this
and it's nice beausage)
- minimize polished parts, increase worn parts (rusty steel quill stem?)
- if drop or albastache bars, use non-aero brake levers
- cleverly placed sticker here or there (decrease pristine factor)

hope this helps

Catch & release Atlantis frameset for sale. I got this from clayton.sf to

married to keeping my Clem L as my offroad shredder Rivendell.

Asking $1100 (same price Clayton.SF asked). I will favor a local sale in

some time to find a box and package it properly.

[RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa 700c to 650b via Paul motolite barkes

2019-09-05 Thread Adam Leibow
you can't make the wheel size smaller with the motolite brakes, only
bigger. for example, a vintage MTB with 26" wheels can take 650b or even
700c (small tires) using the motolites. but you can't go the other
direction unless you have a framebuilder move the canti studs down.

hello rbw people - selling my fiance's atlantis. this is the one alluded to

https://www.ebay.com/itm/53cm-Rivendell-Atlantis-Touring-Bike-Frameset-Toyo-Made-in-Japan-Shimano-600/113869740180

cosmetic condition is "fair" but it's a blast to ride. my fiance crashed
once which bent the tip of the fork dropout slightly outward. this was
fixed professionally by Steve Rex. He also gave the entire frame a
straightening for good measure. So it rides great!

see ebay link for photos & more information. i ask to net $800 OBO..
located in San Francisco and can deliver within the city limits or
peninsula (possibly east bay or marin too). I can also ship via bikeflights
at buyer's expense ($50 conus probably). I will throw in a set of Compass
RTP if you pay the full price.

seattube is 53 C-T. toptube is 54 C-C

hmu if you interest

i concur that the clem L feels light for what it is. i think because it
lacks a top tube it gives up a bit more flex which makes pedaling easier.

[RBW] Re: anybody tried WTB Riddlers?

2019-08-23 Thread Adam Leibow
i really like this tire. i, too, had the 700x45 version and used them on my
black mountain cycles MC and then my Sam Hillborne. they roll fast but
still offer great traction in dry dirt (both loose & hardpack) conditions.

two things to note based on my experience:
1. the center tread wears quickly because it is thin.
2. the side knobs are so built up that cornering can feel "unique" at
times. as in, you turn sharply and find that the tire stops leaning at a
certain point. this is only a problem on the road. what you lose in road
turning capability you gain in offroad traction. ymmv or whatever.

lighter than any other rivendell i've ridden (except perhaps the roadini i

tires. ordered some schwalbe g one all around 38s. i will post pics when

2019-06-21 Thread Adam Leibow
if you are trying to do this super budget, find an old fully rigid complete
stumpjumper or rockhopper from the early 90s, add the riv accoutrements,
(swap the bars to boscos, add fenders, brooks saddle, basket+racks,
schwalbe fat tires). done deal for easily under $600. alternatively, find a
vintage MTB frameset with good clearances and build it up riv style. i have
done so many builds like this.

[RBW] Re: Tires for HHH tandem

2019-06-12 Thread Adam Leibow
I didn't read the whole thread so apologies if this has been stated: the
tire pressures required for tandem weights are much higher than normal to
support two peoples' weight. Compass EL seems risky to me for sidewall blow
out. I have the WTB horizons on mine, which seem just strong enough not to
cause worry but ride fairly lively and smooth.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell tandem builds

2019-06-04 Thread Adam Leibow
As a current Hubbuhubbuh owner, one piece of advice I can share is that
friction shifting was a PITA. My theory is the amount of distance the cable
travels combined with how much more a tandem frame flexes (longer tubing
distances + the weight of two people) equals mucho ghost shifting and
chain-jump weirdness. I could be wrong. But my problems went away when I
flipped the switch on my Ultegra shifters (mated to Paul thumbies) to
"index" mode. I'd steer clear of friction shifting on the tandem but I am
interested to hear others' experiences

[RBW] Re: Chevoit or Clem jr L

2019-04-30 Thread Adam Leibow
I have both (60cm Cheviot & 59cm Clem L) and disagree that the cheviot is
faster/sportier. To me the cheviot rides stouter/stiffer and the clem L
feels flexier and "planes" if you believe in that. I prefer the Cheviot for
carrying a substantial load (clem L flexes too much) and the Clem L for
lighter loads & faster rides. I use the Clem L on group rides to keep up
with my local MTB & CX group ride friends. They're amazed that my
"commuter" can keep up.

Jon - the shifting is great! very quick and precise. Sram is great for

I'm just using an XT hub (a 10speed one, i dont know the model) with a

i recommend this setup if you are interested in modern shifting. You can

[RBW] Re: Ethics Question

2019-03-06 Thread Adam Leibow
i swap parts on my gf's bike all the time. she doesnt care as long as i
dont make her upright bars drop bars (for example). and i always tell her
what i'm doing while i'm doing it because i know she doesn't care (and
would probably rather i shut up about bike stuff).

[RBW] FS: 700c/29er Velocity Dyad Deore LX wheelset

2019-02-28 Thread Adam Leibow
Hello RBW group,

I have for sale a very standard & solid 700C Rivendell wheelset.

Velocity DYAD 36H silver
Deore LX hubs 100/135OLD

Here's a horrible picture of what they look like mounted on a Rivendell in
bad interior light:

I am pretty sure the spokes are just straight gauge & the nipples are
probably brass but don't hold me to it. The wheels are "true enough"
meaning they ride well and probably don't spin totally perfectly like a
brand new handbuilt set, but are not far away from perfection.

I am looking for $100 net. I live in Outer Sunset and work in SOMA in San
Francisco and much prefer a local sale! I can deliver to pretty much any
where in SF 7x7. I will give it two or three days before offering to ship
in case there is somebody local who can come get em.

However if shipped I will package well & ship via Bikeflights but whenever
I guesstimate the cost of shipping it always ends up being more, that I
cover. If you send me $100 for the wheels, I will ship and trust you to
trust me to get the best shipping price which I will trust you to fully
imburse me for. Hope that tongue twister makes sense!

Thanks for looking!

Adam

Patrick, thank you! the bottles are copper, and i agree about them not
matching the more baby blues and pinks and creams that i've got going on.
However, if I let them patina enough, they might ;)
