[RBW] Stolen Bleriot (San Francisco)

2020-10-29 Thread Lee Chae
Hey Riv community,

A friend had her 57cm Bleriot stolen today in the Outer Sunset in San
Francisco. Please be on the look out for suspicious sales. Pictured as below
but the front basket had been swapped out for a saddle sack. She’s an essential
worker and the Bleriot is an essential get-around!

Erik,

Riv sells extra SKS clips for $2.00 per

I use them on the rear of my fixed Quickbeam and they work as advertised
for easy wheel removals.

Hi all,

Thanks, Bill, Eric and Rick for your thoughts and suggestions! It is
beautiful country up there. We took Howell Mtn Road up towards Pope Valley,
but had to turn around as we ran out of time due to breaking camp a lot
later in the morning than we had planned. Not a bad thing as we were
enjoying the camping at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park.

But, I plan to return to do that loop.

Hey RBWers, hope you are all enjoying a good fall!

I'm thinking about doing the following ride this Saturday morning and
wanted to get your thoughts on how difficult, how much time, relative
safety and traffic conditions, etc. Note, I'll be traveling with a camping
load on the bike.

I'd appreciate any input you may have on:

1. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park to Pope Valley via either Howell Mountain

2. Chiles and Pope Valley Rd to Lake Hennessey

3. Lake Hennessy down to Yountsville, likely via the Silverado Trail

Re: [RBW] Son Edelux II connection with SV-8 Dynamo hub

2015-06-27 Thread Lee Chae
Hi David,

This is a pretty easy fix. Just tin the wires using solder and a soldering
iron a la:

http://www.instructables.com/id/Strip-and-Tin-Wires-Like-a-Pro/?ALLSTEPS

Everything will be neat and tidy and easy to work with. You can get your
solder and iron from any Radio Shack. If you get the right kind of solder
and flux, you can tin your brake and derailleur cables, too.

Oh man, I seemed to have botched my hasty attempt at connecting my new
Edelux light to my new SV-8 hub... both obtained from RBW a few weeks
back. I'm hoping someone here on the group can advise. What I did right
off the bat was clip off the two plugs that were pre-installed on the ends
of the Edelux wire. I did that because the Edelux end plugs did not appear
compatible with the the connector cap and cover that ultimately fits over
the connection terminal of the SV-8. So now I have a single end of wire
all frayed that really doesn't want to stay in the SV-8 connection terminal
all that well. It the attached image, you see the connector cap and cover
fitted onto the terminal, which snaps on and off.

Anyone here have the same set-up, or any advice otherwise? Thanks for
 your time.

Re: [RBW] Bertoud Bag Decaleur Installation Update

2015-05-23 Thread Lee Chae
Hi Michael,

Regarding the white elastic loops on the Berthoud bags, you're right, they
are a bit too big. But with non-bulky loads, all you need to do is thread
one end of the loop through the main loop and everything cinches up just
right. It'll take a ride to get used to doing this while in motion.

Here are a couple pics to demonstrate:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/flickr_lee/17357997952/in/dateposted-public/

I finally got the new Bertoud bag and decaleur installed, and tested on my
Ram. Thanks again to all who offered so much good advice. In case not
everyone is riding for the whole weekend I want to share a few of my first
 impressions.

I have a small Acorn Bag Rondinee bag and considered buying the larger
version but bought the Bertoud after three failures to win the Acorn
lottery. (Hard to win from EST). Each of these bags has plusses and
minuses. Bertoud has a slight edge on looks and Acorn on functionality.

Pluses. The leather trim on the Bertoud looks very nice; the large bag is
a perfect fit on my 62 cm Ram; the stiffener, along with the added ridge
piece provided by Boulder Bicycle gives the bag a consistent rectangular
shape where my Acorn sags a bit at the top. It probably holds more than I
should put in it and my glass case rattled around inside until I stripped
off my wind breaker and stuffed it into the bag. ( It was a gorgeous, sunny
day in northern Vt but 55 breezy!)

Negatives: The white elastic loops that close the outside pockets were
mostly the wrong size and ragged at the edges. It ended up taking a long
time to get the bag operational because I wanted my favorite leather worker
to rehab it with the nice brass turnbuckles that Acorn uses. He was at
Disneyland with his grandchildren and when he got home he said it would be
difficult to do it right. Additionally, where they do have elastic, Acorn
uses rounded latches and black cord, both of which work better than the
pointed metal and white elastic on the Bertoud.

The outside rear packets on the Bertoud can't be closed, while empty, with
the supplied elastic, which is too long to loop tightly but too short to
try to retie. Additionally, even though the bag is bigger those pockets
are smaller than Acorn and also smaller than my iphone 5.

The tan canvas of the Acorn reflects light and makes it easier to see
inside, while the black stiffener in the Bertoud absorbs light and makes it
hard to see things inside the bag. I'm baffled by the persistent use of
black interiors in so many different kinds of bags. I always prefer a
light interior, which makes things much more visible.

The decaleur works fine (except the bizarre safety pin) and I installed it
with locktite (was it Patrick who suggest that) and it held well over the
first twenty miles of bad roads.

I plan to replace the poor elastic ties and to get white contact paper to
 line the stiffener.

My ideal bag would combine the Acorn's light color, nice turn buckles, and
shoulder strap loops, with Bertoud's leather trim, square shape, size
 choices, and real availability.

I've uploaded some photos to Flicker:
 https://www.flickr.com/photos/25287678@N08/sets/72157653328881511

BTW, the Ram had hammered honjos for eight years until they broke. I
replaced them with cream longboards but don't like them nearly as much.
Also this was my first time publishing photos since upgrading to
Yosemite. Qudos to Apple to for taking iPhoto, a stupid program, and making
 it even less user friendly.

 Michael

 Hey gang,

from my garage in 2011. This week it appeared and was sold on Ebay. I
have, since Tuesday, spent countless hours on the phone with ebay (empty
promises and no help), SFPD, and San Jose Police in order to go through the
proper channels and get my bike back (now a frame only)

Some people have had luck in buying back their old items - I am not
 interested in that solution.

The seller (in San Jose) has many suspicious listings (frames and parts in
various sizes, few details) but I don't want to post that information here
because what looks like a bicycle chop shop seller could also be someone
who isn't intentionally selling stolen good and might just be flipping
 Craigslist bikes for extra cash.

If anyone here happened to buy a 54cm road standard frame in blue on 7/17,
I just ask that you wait a little bit and not pay for the frame while I
work with SFPD to retrieve it.

Does anyone have helpful tips to give me a better chance of success?

And why wait another 20 years? Ent-MOOT should be an annual event, at

Hi everyone. This was probably mentioned at some point over the months, but
do we have a campsite at China Camp secured for that weekend? There is a
huge one with a great big fire ring that would be perfect--if it hasn't
already been booked. The two hike and bike sites are pretty small--would
probably host about 6-8 tents total.

Looking forward to it,

I was talking with a cyclist yesterday and he asked if I was going to Ales

scheduled for Saturday, July 12. So, if you happen to think you see
someone who may or may not have invented the Mountain Bike zip past you on
the trail, you may be correct.

 More info: http://www.alesandtrails.com/Home.html

Also (and still plan a more comprehensive local area resource list for
those out of town folk) if you are going to just engage in Day Use of
the China Camp trails, there is a fee associated with access. Those who
pay for camping have full access for no additional $ amount, but when
Friends of China Camp took over trail maintenance from the California State
Parks Department (funding issues in past years in CA), they began this.
You can pay a fee at the kiosk near the main entrance. You can also
purchase a year pass (runs for 365 consecutive days from purchase) for $35.
The website now lists the day passes for $3 - which seems to have been
 reduced since I last checked.

Anyone who either already has or needs a campsite for Friday night – let’s

service as a 'round town single speeder. Since building it up, I've found
that I'm using it way more than I thought I would! It just feels really
nice to be way up high and not have too many gears to fiddle with.

 Here's a Pic. https://www.flickr.com/photos/122008974@N05/14005280629/

The frame is an REX Criterium by Araya, made with Araya 531 Tubing. I
don't know anything about it other than that. It's lightweight and quick,
and I like it, so I s'pose that's all that matters. Its got quite a bit of
 attractive beausage.

 The frame is a 63cm C-T with a 59cm top tube. I haven't measured the ST
and HT angles, but I imagine they're a bit steeper than my 56cm
Hillborne's. My PBH is 88, and the bike actually fits quite well, though
with little standover. It's currently built with quite the mishmash of
parts, most of which I had lying around from previous builds/unbuilds.

 Tech Deluxe 12cm Stem
 Cromo Albas
 V-O seatpost
 Brooks C17 Saddle
original Sugino Mighty Comp crank 130bcd
Silver Long reach brakes and Tektro mtb levers
 Black P45 fenders
 Berthoud saddle pouch

Wheels - super cheap-o single wall single speed rear wheel
Bontrager race-light front wheel left over from my racer days.

 Gearing is 42-16 Freewheel

So, down to the real question: Since I'm riding this bike way more than I
thought I would, I'm looking into getting a proper wheelset for it.

Options are Sturmey-Archer (sunrace) S3X fixed gear threespeed with a
freewheel screwed on, or just a nicer sealed bearing single speed wheelset.

I know there are a few S3X riders here so, how does it feel? I mean, is
there noticable drag or mushy-ness? In the 3rd (direct) gear, does it feel
the same as a good single speed? The three speed is attractive to me,
because I sometimes pull a trailer with my daughters with this bike, and
sometimes 72 gear inches is a bit high..

Or I could keep it single, but just with a nicer matching wheelset.

Or I could build it 1x8, which I already have all the parts for.

Mostly looking for thoughts on the S3X hub, but all other
 comments/questions are welcome of course!

All the kit, including the small HP Lezyne for the gofast, fits into a

Chipping in: I put the 700x32 Compass tires on a few weekends ago. Pumped them
up to about 70-75 psi and took them on a couple of rides. I really liked the
feel and cornering. But I was coming from a handful of years spent on Hetres,
Lierres, B-lines, and Col de la Vies. So I was worried I was sacrificing some
cush in trying out this whole 700c thing. This morning I let out some air to
get them to 50 psi. Cush achieved! Glad I hadn't wasted my time cobbling
together my first 700c bike.

It's making me think there's a light and lively 700c sportif somewhere in my
future.

I have a build concept for a SimpleBeam kind of thing. The steep hill I
live on completely rules out a singlespeed for the uphill part, and rules
out riding fixed for the downhill part. Still, I notice that for my
commute I use a particular small handful of gears. It makes me think that
it is plausible for me to build a 2-speed, using a White 16/19 on the back
and two chainrings on the front with 3-teeth of difference, so I could have
 one rear wheel position.

Right now my concept is a 35/38 in front with the 16/19 in back. My two
gears: 35x19 and 38x16 would be 50 and 64 with 27 diameter wheels
 (700x32).
 On a 110mm BCD, I could alternatively easily run a 36/39, a 39/42, a
40/43 or a 42/45 in front without having to chase down any weird
 chainrings.
 On a 94mm BCD, I could run a 29/32 for offroady stuff.

As a shifting maneuver, I'd loosen the right side bolt. Stick-shift the
chain from big-to-small and then from small-to-big. Then tighten the right
side bolt again and ride away.

Anyway, by my numbers, spinning at 110RPM with a 27 diameter wheel is
21mph, which is plenty fast for road cruising for me, especially when I can
coast downhills. I think I can handle the 50 gear up my hill as well.

I wonder what others feel they need. I know Patrick Moore zens out with
a slow metronome cadence climbing with 70-something gear inches. Who else
thinks my two speeds are a bad idea?

Re: [RBW] Re: Sanity check: moving posts to 650b-ice SimpleOne

2014-02-20 Thread Lee Chae
Hi Keith. That second QB 650b conversion on Jim Cyclofiend's website is mine. I
bought the frame/fork/brakes/wheels from Rich. I'll post something more
detailed in the morning, but in short, I could fit Hetres in there no problem.
But the increased pneumatic trail made the famously stable Riv ride too
sluggish for me. So I switched to Soma B-lines and have been quite happy. As
Bill alludes to, however, that BB gets pretty low, which is an issue since I'm
riding the QB fixed. I use 165mm cranks, but am wedded to toe clip technology.
It took some time before I found a pedal + toe clip combo that wouldn't scrape
the ground when walking the bike. (I use MKS Sylvan Lites and Soma double-gated
clips.) Despite it all, I have yet to have a real pedal strike incident and I
ride that bike the most frequently as it's my commuter (which means I'll
probably go down tomorrow). I'm not a racer though, but neither am I tootler.
Or maybe I'm an unracer and untootler or somethinglikethat.

Best regards,
Lee

I don’t have proof, by my guess is that the S3X is more sturdy than a
standard Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub because it doesn’t have pawls inside.
Because it has no pawls, it also runs silently, without the constant (if
quiet) ticking that a 3-speed hub normally makes.

To run in fixed mode, you use a splined cog that slides onto the hub and
is held in place by a locking. There’s a bit of “lash” in the hub—even with
the chain properly tight, there’s a slight lag between backpedaling and
forward pedaling. This eliminates a bit of the “flywheel” effect of a true
fixed gear, but it still rides pretty much like a regular fixie.

You also have the option of spinning on a standard one-speed freewheel,
which turns the S3X into a coasting hub. The benefit to this setup is that
the pawls (the part that usually breaks) is outside of the hub and easily
fixed—either fix the freewheel or put on a new one. I have a White
Industries Eno freewheel on my Quickbeam; my Motobecane is still in fixed
 mode.

I have my bikes geared so that the top gear is my normal cruising gear
(somewhere around 72 inches) and I have two lower gears for the steep stuff
(75% and 60% of the top gear). With a top gear of 72 inches, this gives a
low of 45, which is for me good enough until the gradient goes over about
 10 percent. YMMV.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best summer cycling caps?

Sorry, Patrick, I haven't tried their cotton caps before. So, I don't know
about sizing. You may want to measure your dome and give them a ring. I
hear their customer service is very good. The wool caps I have from them
are super stretchy--no discomfort at all for me, unlike some of the other
wool caps I own.

Best of luck,

Re: [RBW] Re: Jamboree, China Camp

2013-08-23 Thread Lee Chae
I can think of 3-4 great rides using China Camp as a start-end point and
covering a few different types of ride:

1. A mellow ride around the Paradise Loop rollers. Only one medium-size
hill along the way. So, a climb out and a climb back in. I would figure the
basic loop would be ~25 miles(???), but can be extended with some easy
miles and cover a range of great places for a lunch, including a great
little seafood shack right out on the pier ;)

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Paradise-Loop
http://www.331fish.com/

2. A medium-effort ride out to Point Reyes and the great Bovine Bakery.
Several climbs to deal with, but the scenery is worth it. And none of the
hills are killers, though the baked goods may be.

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/point-reyes-loop
http://www.thebovinebakery.com/

3. A harder ride up Mt. Tam either on paved road or trail, followed by the
Seven Sisters rollers, the beautiful descent to Alpine Dam, the climb out
to beer and sausages in Fairfax, and an easy bit back to China Camp.

http://www.strava.com/activities/29392795
http://www.yelp.com/biz/gestalt-haus-fairfax-fairfax

4. A dirt ride: There are lots of single-track-type dirt rides right in
China Camp, and many more in the immediate surroundings.

http://www.marinfattire.com/chinacampbiketrails.html
http://mikesbikes.com/articles/mountain-bike-trails-marin-north-bay-pg126.htm

One question I had is it seems many Riv owners own more than one Riv. How
many will be packing more than one to the Jamboree? I mention this in hopes
of there being some sort of Entmoot called during the event, as that's the
only Riv I own.

I think the main weight savings were the ultralight tent, sleeping bag, and

packability. Another great addition was the flour sack towel. I love these
things. You can use them for a lot of tasks, and they are so absorbent that
I also use them to towel off after a dip in the water or a shower or faucet
bath. Finally, since the weather was so mild, I only took one added layer
for emergency warmth, and it was lightweight wool stuff.

There's a Motel 6 and a Travelodge in San Rafael, about 4 miles from the
campgrounds. There's also an Embassy Suites less than 2 miles away from it.
The first two seem to be around $70/night for a king bed, and the Embassy
Suites about $170 (all current rates).

Admin Jim Cyclofiend has been known to lurk in the trails and roadways in

Also, the campground has pay showers, just fyi. And if you use it as a

Re: [RBW] Re: Newbaum's cloth bar tape

2013-07-03 Thread Lee Chae
1) Yes, I ended up liking four coats the best, too.
2) I agree. I remove just enough backing to make the next loop. I found
this kept the wrap tight on the bars, and also avoided having the tape
stick to itself.

On a side note, I've never been able to get good color using clear shellac
on colored tape. I found it would alter the hue in unexpected ways. I moved
on to trying teflon spray as a way to keep the cloth relatively clean. That
only worked so-so. Now, I neither shellac nor spray. Just use the cloth
tape until it's too grimy and then replace. Does anyone have any tricks
regarding the clear shellac. I like gray bar cloth and would like to keep
the color gray, but with a little protection from dirt and grease.

Thanks,
Lee

 Two things:
 1) In my experience it takes at least four coats of shellac for it to end

 2) The trick to preventing the tape from twisting and adhering to itself
is to remove the backing only a little at a time. It takes a little
practice to get your technique down but then it's not too bad.

Hi Michael. Just an aside here, but if you plan to use a handlebar bag with
the Grand Ene front rack, it will most likely break under a regular load
unless you are also using a decaleur that is bearing the weight. Mine broke
carrying a very light load. And I've read reports of others breaking, too.

Hey Riv listers. Here's a great resource for colors:

Hi Justin. I have a Shimano DH-3N71 that's been in use for a little more
than 4.5 years. It's on my commuter (first a Kogswell, now a Quickbeam).
I've used it year-round during this time, and park it outside during the
day. It's always worked just fine despite being exposed to the rainy
seasons here in the SF Bay Area. I've taken it out for bike camping
adventures and trail-riding, as well. Again, no problems. So, I've enjoyed
my experience with the Shimano.

Hope this helps,

Re: [RBW] Re: What Is Your Moustache Attitude?

2012-09-07 Thread Lee Chae
Good morning, all.

I guess this is a good example of everybody needing to make their own peace
with moustache bars. I like them low and a bit far away. With this
positioning, I do most of my riding with my hands at 10 and 2 on the curves
leading from the hooks to the bar ends. When my hands need a little relief,
I rotate my wrists or move my hands to a new place. When my hands or back
need more relief, I can lean into the hooks or go upright at the bar ends.
I also use the hooks position for headwinds or faster moments. And, I like
grabbing on the straight bar segments when climbing.

With this configuration, I find that I have to tilt the bars down or else
the bar ends force my wrists into a broken position, like after you swing a
hammer or cast a fly. I've also positioned my saddle and bars so that I'm
pretty balanced and can lift my hands off the bar and still stay in my
riding position. So, not a lot of pressure on the bars to begin with.

With all of that said, on a couple of longer rides, at the 60-70 mile mark,
I have felt some discomfort in my hands that I have yet to experience with
drop bars.

Anyways, here's some pics of my setup:

I love the feel up on in the hooks but the end of bar feel has been
difficult to find a happy place for me. I have raised the bar now and
installed a dirt drop stem to shorten the reach. Feels better sitting up
but doesn't feel as good when climbing or in the hooks. Overall I like

While I like the poster, and do not regret buying it sight unseen, I
can't say that it is what I expected it would be. I didn't look at the
artist's website so I had no preconceived notions except for what my own
sense of excitement at the mention of Rivendell.

Since those who have not bought it yet can actually see what it's about
on the Blug section, I'm going to be a bit more specific in my comments:

I like it, but am not overwhelmed by it. What does bother me, though, is
seeing the boys foot/shoe showing under the tire. Aesthetically (or
whatever term is appropriate) it bugs me because my mind questions how can
that be possible. Is he lifting the bike? Doesn't seem so, did then someone
rolled the bike over his foot? Doesn't seem so either as the bike doesn't
seem to be tilted up. Anyway...

Other than that detail, I believe that like almost all of the RBW frame
colors (with the except of the Hunqapillar gray) the more I look at it, the
more it will grow on me. That is, unless the issue with the foot under the
wheel also makes me more and more uncomfortable...

Can anyone come up with my explanation that allows me to go Aha!!! and
makes the whole foot thing make sense?

At least if I end up not liking it at all, I paid the lowest price by
buying it unseen. I do like RBW's price escalation scheme as it supports us
 wild risk takers... :-D

Hope no one gets mad at me for this post...

Re: [RBW] Re: Stolen Rivendell on ebay

One thing to make sure of is what type of coverage you have via renter's
insurance. Some policies offer replacement value, which covers you for
the cost of replacing your bike with a like bike at current prices (minus
deductible, of course). Other policies will only cover you for the initial
cost of the bike minus depreciation (and deductible). The first type of
policy is the one I prefer.

My second insurance policy is a secret, locked chamber *inside* my house

Re: [RBW] Done talking myself into like the moustache.

2012-04-08 Thread Lee Chae
Hi Scotty. The search for the right bars for the right bike can definitely
be categorized under the journey of self-discovery. There are a lot of neat
handlebars out there, and a good number of them will sing like sirens as
you sail from one website to the next. But, I think what it all boils down
to is that 90% (or more--probably more) of the time we ride a given bike,
we are riding in a certain position. Find out what that position is and try
to recreate that on the bike you are working on, given the differences in
geometry, saddle position, handlebars, etc.

For instance, if you are feeling that the moustaches are too long a reach,
and you are in an upright-y position given the dirt drops, you may need to
move your saddle back a bit, to recreate the right distance between hands
and center of gravity that other, comfortable setups gave you.

In other words, I have had a bit of whiskey and beer tonight and am now
meting out advice, so take that into account

Good luck,
Lee

dirt drop stem I feel I am leaning forward too far in the position where
the brakes are. I could use some suggestions for bars that give me a closer
flat section near the brakes that wont force me to buy everything new. Just
 the bar. Am I dreaming?

I won't make a habit of relying soley on the Aardvark though. I generally

Re: [RBW] Rando Advice

2012-03-06 Thread Lee Chae
Hi Smitty. Congrats on your decision for a new adventure. I have a few
cents to offer:

- The switch from 40mm to 32mm tires will change how your bike handles,
imo. The difference may not be a big issue for you, but I'd be hesitant to
make big changes before going on my longest ride ever. I think if you are
comfortable on your Supremes, you should go with them. The Kojak slicks and
Cypres may give you a little boost in perceived effort/speed. If that's
really important to you, I'd get them now and try them out over the next
couple of weeks.

- Similarly, I think good advice on the food issue is go with what you
know. One approach is to see if there are places along the route (ideally
the controls), where you can purchase snacks. If so, I'd pack enough food
for a couple legs of the route. Then, just eat stuff from the controls (if
they appear to be places that sell food you like). For instance, on rides
of that distance, I usually pack a sandwich and a sandwich bag of munchies
(fig bars, etc.). I usually buy a lunch at one point during the ride, and
if I feel like I need a break or boost on the back half of the ride, I'll
stop for chips and a Coke/V8/Gatorade, whatever. I usually snack on the
munchies as I ride. The home-made sandwich is my back-up. I'm sure this
will be a good learning experience in terms of figuring out what works for
you fuel-wise. Overall, I say just have a plan in place in terms of knowing
if and where you can get food along the route, and filling in your
between-stop and emergency needs by packing a few things in your bag.

- My tool kit is the same one I take for any ride or commute. I have it
pared down to the essentials for fixing flats (tire levers, patch kit,
spare tube) and making adjustments to saddle and handlebar position and
brakes (wrenches). I also carry a chain tool and spare links, a tire boot
(square of material I snipped from a FedEx envelope), lab gloves, and some
zip ties. I don't carry extra shifter/brake cables, chain ring bolts, or
brake pads, but I know folks who do. Depending on the length and
anticipated light conditions, I'll take a set of back-up batteries for my
tail light (I have a generator front light). My back-up front light is a
headlamp, which I only bring when I really think it may come into play
(e.g. really crappy weather). In other words, I plan my tool kit around
needs that I've experienced as opposed to all anticipated repairs. (If I
ever go on an extended bike camping trip, I will probably do the latter.)

- A couple of things I also pack is a small bag of electrolyte pills
(Endurolytes), and I have two packs of goo I shove in a small pocket on my
bag. The goo, which I hate, is for real emergencies (mine or others). I've
known people who have suffered real bonks and it made me think it would be
a good thing to have something just in case... As for the electrolytes, I
sometimes get thigh cramps on long rides on hot days, and I find these help
me out. They also help settle my stomach if it starts getting upset over
the combination of constant riding and eating that usually go hand-in-hand
on these rides.

I hope you enjoy it, and don't forget to post a ride report!

I've got 40mm Marathon Supremes on there now. I imagine I'd be the only

can't imagine he'd sell crappy tires.

What sort of foods do people eat? I'd rather avoid things in the power goo

My initial plans to ride up to the show have been canceled due to
other events. But, I was planning on creating a ride based on the SF
Randonneurs' Davis 200K route. You can find the cue sheet here:

http://sfrandonneurs.org/route-archive.htm

A few notes:
- I haven't ridden this route, but I know that SFR tries to choose
safe and scenic routes where possible, which was why I was planning on
using it. With that said, they do this brevet at night and I don't
know whether the day-time vs. night-time car traffic patterns differ
greatly.

- You'll need to figure out which BART station you want to use as the
ride start, and how to link that up to the start of the cue sheet.

- You'll need to map your own leg from Davis to Sacramento, but I'm
sure that Google can find you some good ones.

Happy riding,

Personally, I would rather take BART to Richmond and then take Amtrak to
Sacramento. That will put you in town just a few blocks from the NAHBS.
You'll have more time to see the show, which will be *much* more interesting
than the rather boring, flat roads of Solano County.

HI Thomas. How about visiting RIv (I'm assuming you're local given the SF
Craigslist link) and checking out a new Sam Hillborne ($1050 frame/fork)?
It would make for a great all-purpose bike and is quality, comfortable
steel. And, with the extra $300 you save on the frame/fork, you can pick
some useful accessories, like racks, lights, and fenders, etc.

Just my two cents.

I am new to bikes and RBW but would like a quality comfortable steel

Re: [RBW] Riv,Miyata, and Pelican stolen in SF

2011-09-06 Thread Lee Chae
Hey JL and Ray. Sorry to hear about the theft, JL. Recently, there's
been a well-documented stolen bike spree going on in SF. Areas that I
know of that have been hit are: the Richmond, Cole Valley, Inner
Sunset, and the Mission. All have been garage break-ins with very
similar characteristics. Three apartments within one block of my
building have been hit (including my building). I don't know if it's
the same person(s) doing it, but in the case of my building,
he/she/they left the bikes that had their frames u-locked to something
substantial, and stole those whose frames were cabled. That
particularly sucked for my building, as it's hard to u-lock bikes to
the racks there and most people had some sort of u-lock+cable
combination.

For the Mission thefts, I referenced people to this SFPD officer, who
specializes in bike theft: steven dot pomatto at sfgov dot org

JL, you might want to contact him as I'm hoping that this will add to
SFPD awareness of this particular spree.

Good luck,

Re: [RBW] A Stolen Surly (Posting For A Customer)

2011-08-12 Thread Lee Chae
This really sucks. I live in the same apartment building as the
victim, and I was the person who set up the bike racks. There were at
least five bikes stolen, along with some wheels and one saddle+post.
The bikes were all locked to the racks, some with cables plus u-locks,
others with u-locks. The garage is protected by a keypad-coded garage
door. That is the main theft prevention device. I always hypothesized
that once a thief got in, none of the bikes would be safe if the thief
was really prepared. The thief tried to get through the cable securing
two of my bikes, but it looks like he/she/they couldn't make it
through the cable. I don't remember the brand, but I bought it because
it was heavy duty. It wasn't Onguard or Kryptonite or MasterLock.

That Surly was nice, and something special given the couplers.
