I think Grant's designs favor a butt-back position, for handling as well as
comfort and power. At least my Rivs, including the Sam HIll, all seemed to
handle best when I have my saddle rearward -- the long stays would indicate

Have you tried to remove the fitting on the pump that fits over the valve stem?
Some pumps have rubber O-rings that surround the valve stem to seal it
different ones for different valves. If there is one on this pump I'd see if it
comes out and try to put a presto valve in, if it leaks air
