Re: [TANKS] Re: An Era is OVER!

2017-02-20 Thread TyngTech
What about attendance?

As the dude who provided the prepped fields for the first five years of the
hobby (and that little sortie in 01 doesn't count), nobody here has the
right to diss my attendance record. Attendance from here on out won't be
an issue as I've decided to pull out of tank combat all together. Good
luck with the hobby and no, the Cromwell will not be sold.

[TANKS] Re: Dangerous Power E1

2017-02-14 Thread TyngTech
The E1 is a nice marker. If you wanted to go more compact you can lop off
an inch from the back end quite easily. Everything to the right of the red
line is not needed for marker operation.

As Doug stated, the marker runs off of 150 to 200 psi pressure. Never run
straight CO2 to the marker. The velocity is adjusted by adjusting the
regulator.

What are you printing, Loic? My Locust survived a two-day event using
3D printed idlers and TTS sprockets. Both the idlers and sprockets took
hits with no visible damage. My mantlet was also 3D printed and took a LOT
of hits over the weekend. It had a layer of fiberglass reinforcement on
 it,
but it didn't show any damage either.
I believe that 3D printing has a lot of uses in RCTC, but there are
some things that it just isn't isn't suitable for. For example, I tried 3D
printing suspension units for my Locust. (there are some pics in a past
thread) Initial results looked promising, but long term durability just
wasn't there. The constant stress of a 50lb. tank on the printed parts
eventually broke many of the suspension units.
On the flip side there are some cool capabilities that these printers
put forth. The illustration I'll use for this point is my Locust turret.
For one thing, the Locust is a small tank, but it's turret is equally
small. (about 8.5in in dia. plus the little storage area in the back) To
get a nice accurate turret without the inside being bulky I designed the
turret on a CAD program and then printed it in three pieces. After gluing
the pieces together I fiberglassed it. This gave me a nice durable turret
that didn't waste the limited internal space available.

Re: [TANKS] Rookie primer

Flags are easy. Cut up a coat hanger, slap some tape on one end, drill a
3/32" hole somewhere on the model and there you go. FYI, I won't be at the
battle this weekend. My real estate empire needs my attention this
weekend. Hate to miss it.

[TANKS] Re: relay switching

2016-04-18 Thread TyngTech
Are you looking to reverse with the relay? If so, you can wire two relays
into an H-Bridge or get a dedicated reversing relay. The 3.7 control from
the toy would drive transistors as in Franks diagram and these would feed
12v into the reversing relay coils.

Here's a reversing relay for a winch. Replace the MOM toggle switch with
two transistors that provide switched 12v to the relay. You would hook the
drains of the transistors to the relay.

[TANKS] Re: relay switching

2016-04-04 Thread TyngTech
The motor wires are your PWM (pulse width modulation) fwd/rev signals so
they get connected to the RPWM and LPWM pins on the IBT-2. You also need
to provide 5V to the VCC, R_EN, and L_EN pins. Your 3.7V from the toy may
suffice (if not, run the toy at 5V). Your larger motor and it's separate
power supply get connected to the B+, B-, M+, and M- pins. Tie all the
grounds together (the ground on the toy battery and the ground on the big
motor battery). When testing, if the motor is jittery or only goes full
speed in either direction, wire a small resistor between the two 3.7V PWM
signal wires.

These boards are pretty solid and have built in thermal cutouts. Just
watch your battery polarity.

[TANKS] Re: New Track System

2015-10-26 Thread TyngTech
Pretty website but has this track been tested with a 120lb tank neutral
turning in tall grass yet? Reason I ask is that without guide horns I
think this track will run off the drive sprocket (especially with a
suspended tank). The first gen tanks used chain tracks (with wood slats)
and slipping off the drive sprockets was the issue with them if I recall.

Yep, an upright bottle or siphon. FYI, I bet you could bypass the E1's
built in regulator and run with a 150psi warship reg. That could be an
interesting and space saving option. Maybe I'll pull the reg off the E1
and check the factory pressure setting.

FYI, if discarding the E1's grip, there's an extra 1" of length on the back
of the marker body that does nothing for marker operation and could be cut
off.

2015-10-13 Thread TyngTech
An HPA marker can run "dry" CO2 just fine. It can be an issue if the
o-rings used are not CO2 compatible as these may degrade at some point. To
fix this is to replace the o-rings with known CO2 compatible ones. There
are several sellers on eBay that sell CO2 compatible rebuild kits for most
markers. I intend to do this with my E1 if I ever finish up my little
T-60. FYI, my E1 shoots quite nicely on CO2 and it didn't explode in my
hand or produce any of the other disasters the so called knowledgeable on
the paintball forums always predict when running CO2.

This company is taking Turnigy 85A brushless controllers and modding them

The stock controller from

I'd consider finding the OEM of the product and see if they would produce
brushed versions for you. The code to do so is open source and freely

[TANKS] Re: brushless motor questions

2015-07-29 Thread TyngTech
Can't say I truly understand the brushless nomenclature (i.e. KVA) because
nobody ever talks about the controller side. Brushless motors are
basically steppers and without the controller are inert chunks of iron and
copper. What I don't get is the KVA ratings (rpm's per volt) of these
motors. In my mind, the controller dictates rpm by how fast it is
energizing the phases, not by how much voltage is being applied. Voltage
would affect acceleration and torque or am I getting this wrong?

 Hello –

We’ve had a few discussions regarding brushed vs brushless motors. The
most important point I remember was that brushed and brushless ran at
similar energy efficiencies under load. I’m wondering about efficiency with
 respect to size and weight.

 Let’s compare this brushless motor

 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?I=LXLWY0P=7

 to this brushed motor

 http://www.andymark.com/CIM-motor-FIRST-p/am-0255.htm

Both are in the 300 watt range. At 12v, the unloaded brushless motor,
rotates at 32k rpm and the brushed motor at 5.3k rpm. Of course, the
brushless motor would need a lot more gearing to make it usable in a tank.
That aside, could I expect roughly the same performance from both motors ?
It’s hard for to believe that because the brushless motor is 1/14 of the
brushed motor weight and 1/7 of the volume.

Is there another factor (besides cost) I need to take into account when
comparing a brushed to a brushless motor ?

 Thanks,

 Doug

run it as a TD (the Frank P. method ;-).

speed controller is cheap and reliable but crude. If the system I'm
suggesting here is viable it could make a reasonably cheap system possible
with the added advantage that if your ESC goes belly up during a battle
then you just take the SSR out of the circuit and you're back to a basic
 MAG speed controller.

[TANKS] Re: Introduction and questions

2015-05-18 Thread TyngTech
Chris,

The GTVe marker is no more. That model had a very week electronic trigger
that worked only half the time. My current tank uses a mechanical marker
triggered by a sliding cam powered by a door lock actuator. The current
batch of low cost electronic markers from Spyder (the Fenix line) are a
quality product and I've used them in a few projects for FOA. The Spyder
Fenix's are some of the last remaining emarkers that can use CO2 (most
higher end markers are air only now).

So Caleb asked what the ZekeTurret was for. Besides a very cool toy for my
grand kids, It's also demonstrator for my ZekeServo concept. The ZekeServo
is basically a very strong worm gear mechanism built into the form of a
large scale heavy duty r/c servo. The intent is to offer a larger, more
powerful, and affordable servo for the robotic and maker crowds. Think of
a hexapod bot you could ride on. This servo would allow you to build that.
Hopefully these will be available in laser cut kits this year.

Besides the cool factor, there are a couple practical elements to the
curves. Since this is being designed for lasercut ply, the curves define
the shape using the shortest possible line (laser cutting is priced by cut
length). The curves also make it easier to finish the edges off. The
intent is to wrap the edge of the piece with glass cloth (or your fabric of
choice) and adhesive of choice. This is a powered remote controlled device
hence the battery connection.

Because this hobby is dead unless we make an effort to make the cost of
entry easier and more affordable. An exposed loader addresses both these
areas and if I recall, it is not unprecedented. We had an Abrams battle
one year with an exposed loader and I think we gave it hit exception. If a
builder can fit everything into the turret, kudos for them but there aren't
that many of us out there. BUT if a new guy shows up with a generic tank
(with an exposed loader) that moves, turns, and shoots (all still requiring
much skill and wherewithal to accomplish BTW) he/she shouldn't be penalized

grounds for debate about valid hits. If you have the skill to build a small

you made a simple socket to receive the tube, then you could reload
quickly using a modified Navarrone Gun loading process:

 - Disconnect magazine from marker
 - Cock spring
 - Pour 20 balls down the tube using preloaded tube of 20
 - Reconnect magazine to marker
 - Release spring to push balls into socket and marker breach

It's cheap and easy to make 6-10 pre-loading tubes out of PVC and simply
load them with a funnel before the battle.

For the spring, you could either duplicate the spring provided with the
marker and make it twice as long or buy a replacement spring and place
two springs in the longer tube.

Building reliable paintball feed that fits within the scale confines of a

external loaders like the old Kingman 40 rounders IF they were exempt from

you made a simple socket to receive the tube, then you could reload
quickly using a modified Navarrone Gun loading process:

 - Disconnect magazine from marker
 - Cock spring
 - Pour 20 balls down the tube using preloaded tube of 20
 - Reconnect magazine to marker
 - Release spring to push balls into socket and marker breach

It's cheap and easy to make 6-10 pre-loading tubes out of PVC and simply
load them with a funnel before the battle.

For the spring, you could either duplicate the spring provided with the
marker and make it twice as long or buy a replacement spring and place
two springs in the longer tube.

That was me on the rules proposal. Four size ranges with corresponding
ratings if I recall. I've always seen this hobby as a combat sport which
shouldn't be hampered by scale factors. IMO the as built size ratings was
an elegant solution to the never ending scale arguments. Others felt
otherwise and implemented the everything gets the 4/40 rating. Not an
issue if everything was built to 3' feet as the original intent but now we
have all these mighty mites running around and they get 4/40, just like
your big old lumbering 1:6 scale Tiger!

Thank you, that was my goal ! Seriously, I was very jealous when I saw
Joe, Frank, or Paul pick up their tank so easily. You’ve seen Bad Kitty. I
need help getting it into and out of my car, and I use a hoist to get it
from the floor onto my workbench. I wanted something smaller and more
manageable. I will miss the “go absolutely anywhere” factor, though.

A while ago somebody proposed a rule change that would allow players to
build vehicles at any scale and give them defensive ratings based on their
size. I think that’s a good idea. It would let people build the tank they
want at the size they want. No more hunting for obscure tiny vehicles.

Nice fabrication skills on display also.

Thank you again ! I especially appreciate that compliment from you because
of your craftsmanship. This tank was new for me in that I used a CAD
program, GeoMagic Design, for the whole thing. It made a huge difference. I

trail-and-error iterations I would always go through before using CAD. I
still had some screw-ups, but not nearly as many or as bad.

Did the ACME nut (as shown in the pic) come with it? If so, do as Frank
suggests. Instead of an additional nut to clamp (that ACME spec is an
oddball one) you could tap a a set screw into the provided ACME nut. Red
Loctite might be strong enough to hold the nut in place. Another option
assuming the outer diameter of the ACME threading is 7/16, you could but a
clamping shaft collar on there and attach the sprocket to that.

Re: [TANKS] New Track Idea

2015-02-09 Thread TyngTech
Josh,

A TTS track (short for Tyng Track System) uses a continuous loop of
treadmill or conveyor belting as the main tension member. The tracks
are mating pads adhered to the inner and outer faces of the belt. Guide
horns are incorporated on the inner pads. Guide horns engage the roads
wheels to limit side to side play.

First TTS being fabricated for T005 (friction
drive): http://www.rctankcombat.com/order-of-battle/tanks/T005/Page4.html
First sprocket driven TTS on T028 (converted from friction to
sprocket): http://www.rctankcombat.com/order-of-battle/tanks/T028/
First production TTS
T040: http://www.rctankcombat.com/order-of-battle/tanks/T040/Page3.html
Current polymer TTS from TriPact:

beginning. The reason I liked using the roller chain is it added strength
to the track and allowed me to use very common drive sprockets. One idea I
toyed around with was removing the chain and building a pinned tread that
still meshed with roller chain sprockets. Do you think this is practical?
You mentioned a 'properly designed drive cog' in your post. I realize that
a roller chain sprocket is not designed for driving track, but what
differences are there between a roller chain sprocket and a drive cog.

Thanks for the input from everyone.

Looks like a sweet ride Doug.

There's one important aspect about your track design that you failed to
mention: the rigidity of the 90 degree angle between the chain and the
tread. If that angle is not held rigid over the life of the track, the
probability of throwing a track goes up. Attachment links significantly
increase the rigidity and therefore the reliability of the track.
Personally, I think that your attachment chain design is as good as a
chain-based design can get. End of evolution.

The performance of the TTS design is legendary and well-proven on the
battlefield (which makes all other R/C tests look like kindergarten
projects). Will's and Doug's attachment chain designs are also
seasoned. Not as good as TTS, but definitely battlefield approved.
Basically, the last category in track designs that hasn't been fully
 explored is self-linked treads.

If you're going with 3D printing for prototypes and injection molding
for production, you might as well design an interlocking tread that can
be pinned together just like the real thing. When used with a properly
designed drive cog and guide tooth, you would never throw a track.
Moreover, a cleverly designed set of parts could be used to make a wide
array of different tracks. Single-tooth, double-tooth, offset tooth,
narrow, medium and wide tracks could all be built using the same
elemental parts. If you combine the pioneering work done by Garnet for
T011 with 3D printing and modern injection molding, I think the result
could be successfully battle-tested and used on a wide-variety of
 vehicles.

Loic and FoA have pushed that frontier further along with their scale
metal track links, but I don't think the evolution is done and a
semi-scale version in plastic would be greatly appreciated in many
 different R/C worlds.

Re: [TANKS] New Track Idea

2015-02-07 Thread TyngTech
Josh,

Impressive work so far. It looks like your modeling your tracks after
construction equipment. This is fine for low speeds, flat surfaces and no
suspension. I think you will find these tracks will throw quite often in
our typical battling environments and speeds. If your after a performance
track, you WILL need to incorporate guide horns IMO, especially if your
thinking suspension. Also, other traits that make for a good performance
track IMO are stiffness along it's length, light weight, and ability to
shed debris. It doesn't take much to distort a track to the point where it
will disengage from the drive sprocket. The finer the sprocket mechanism
the more so in my observations.

Here's a diagram of how tank mixed steering works in our hobby. Two
channels are used (the left stick in this example, up/down - left/right)
that are mixed by the mixing circuit to control the two motors in a tank.
 Hope this helps.

switch some where between the speed control and motor (or similar). So
with something like the Victor or Talon would it be a simple plug from the
receiver (Rx)? If so is there not usually only one stick on the Tx for
speed therefor one spot on the Rx for a speed control? But it sounds like
 you need two?

For simple FWD/REV control go with the Victor SP's which are the closest
replacement to the old Talon SR's. The new Talon SRX's have extra features
that aren't required for simple tank driving. FYI, the new Victors are now
being made by Cross the Road electronics (same as the Talons).

Re: [TANKS] Remote Triggering - R/C MOSFET switch works fine

2014-10-12 Thread TyngTech
I added that feature so that we can conduct the Doug Experiment one
battle to see how reduced firing rates affect
the game

An immediate effect will be the reduction of long range gunnery. If the
Cromwell only gets to shoot once every 10 seconds or so. You better
believe said Cromwell is going to be right on somebody's six when it takes
that shot! ;)

[TANKS] Re: Beware the S.C.C.

2014-08-25 Thread TyngTech
Hat's off to the Smith clan. The bloodlust in their genes was evident, and
Caleb? Never since Sgt. York has there been such carnage on the field from
one man! I'm most impressed with how he finished off the QF25 into a field
piece of surgical accuracy and Ninja agility. The upgraded Cromwell didn't
do to bad either. The new uber accurate rotate was letting me hit targets
at ranges that I would have passed up before. Fun was had by all and I'm
looking forward to the next battle.

unison. Then,Okay if we must, we will play..
It was all a Pennsylvania ruse!!!.Brothers Isaac and Joshua
manned the Bofors and Navarone while brother Caleb operated his new arty.
THEY LIT US UP MAN. It was brutal. Shots rained from every direction.
Heard Caleb say Gotcha inna little crossfire, how you like dat?Even
when using high speed evasive maneuvers, hits came out of no where. Oh
 the inhumanity.
After the clan left for home, the executive veterans quorum were heard
to mumble something about a new rule ..I believe it is to be named the
Caleb clause. This reporter was not privy to it's details, but I think it
might have something to due with placement of the arty gunners.. Again,
this is only second hand hearsay ,but on a chain around the waist I think
 was the sentence.LOL.

Papa Brian commanded T-77. Sadly for him, firing gremlins abounded.
But he did well for a rookie driver.

Obviously we all had a great day. Stay tuned for video. We have tons
to sift through. Sister of the clan, sorry did not get her name , ran video
on my camera, Chris was also filming. And we have battle cam from my PzII
 and the Semovente.
Stu came up looking for ideas to incorporate into his future productions.

Steve said, and I agree, yes that's true, it was one of the most
enjoyable battling days. Weather and scenarios were perfect.
