You might try running DiskWarrior on the drive. It frequently fixes things that Norton doesn't (you don't say what version of Norton you're using or what version of the OS is running, btw). Of course, just because the computer is new doesn't mean it's perfect. Sometimes even new stuff doesn't work (don't even get me started here...). Also check the PowerDomain control panel to be sure the scsi cards are configured correctly. It's also possible that your cables inside the computer aren't connected perfectly. You might want to reseat the ATA cable to the drive. What you might have done instead was to either: 1) Boot the pb from the Retro CD and then do a restore entire disk and replacing all contents or 2) Install a system folder on the powerbook and rename it "Previous System Folder". Then do the restore and choose "restore entire disk". When you get to the point where you choose the volume to restore *to*, use the dropdown menu to select "replace corresponding files" rather than restore entire disk. This way, you won't try to write over the system folder while it's in use. This is just a quickie on restores, but it's all in detail in the manual. How'd this happen?
G'morning all, I have an odd bird here and, though it probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference in my backup integrity, it is frustrating and annoying nonetheless. I have 7 drives in my local container. When I rewrote my scripts about 6 weeks ago the drives/partitions were in this order: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. Today when I open configurevolumes it still lists them that way. However, about a month after I rescripted (say, end of January) my desktop container now resolves (in all my scripts) to the following order: 4,5,6,7,1,2,3. Nothing odd happened here hardware- or software-wise that I can think of. And the only way I know of to fix this is to ugh rescript again...which I really really don't want to do if I can avoid it. Specifics: G4/450 OS 9.0.4 Retro 4.3 Is this a function of a corrupt Retro.Config error shudder or have I just missed something incredibly simple? Does this sound familiar to anyone here? Hi Mark, I got an assertion check on a restore a couple weeks ago. Basically, the technotes told me to call tech support. :-) For me, I quit Retrospect, restarted, and tried the restore again. Worked just fine. However, my assertion check was a different "elem" number than yours. Dantz Tech Support has documentation on what these mean and what the cures are. I'd say a call to them is in good order. Re: Purchasing a new system
I've noticed that Ecrix is coming out with larger tape libraries, Does anyone think that will make it a more viable solution or is AIT still the way to go? Hi Tim, Ecrix has tape libraries (they call them autopacks) already in service. And VXA-2 is right around the corner. AIT is a great solution, indeed, but I've found that Ecrix's solution is just as good and WAY big less expensive. $.02 Pam -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ Search: http://www.mail-archive.com/retro-talk%40latchkey.com/ For urgent issues, please contact Dantz technical support directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 925.253.3050.
Re: Purchasing a new system
My boss is really leery of Ecrix, no matter how much I push it. She's worried that, should something happen to the company in two years or so (since they're the only one doing this kind of tape/drive now), we won't have the $$ in our budget to purchase a whole new system. I keep working on her. :) Julia, I don't buy that argument. What if Sony decides to stop making AIT's? Then what? Sony's AIT is just as proprietary as Ecrix's VXA. After all, isn't the MacOS proprietary -- now? And DLT was proprietary at the beginning too. I look at it like this...somebody has to be the first and they're going to work with their proprietary formula until some other company decides to pay the licensing or OEM (or whatever they're called in hardware) fees. I've tried just about everything I can to get this to work, but with no luck. Has anyone set up a similar system, or is this just not going to work? Hi Jeff, I don't have experience with the Exabyte. What I can tell you, though, is that if it is anything like the Ecrix external adapter (they now have their FW on the inside of the box so there's no need for the converter to hang around) there is a pinout on the inside of the case that needs to be jumpered in order to work with the adapter. To maintain UL certification, this is something that must be done by one of their in-house techs. You might give the exabyte folks a call and see if there's a way to jumper their boards. Re: turning windows client on/off via script
The users generally know when the backups are coming, but they don't always remember. I'd like to give them a way to automatically script turning the Retrospect client off at the beginning of an experiment, and to turn it back on at the end (or, more likely, at the next reboot). It is possible to go to the Win clientAccess and name these files as private. That way they won't get accessed. hth, Pam -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ For urgent issues, please contact Dantz technical support directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 925.253.3050.
Re: turning windows client on/off via script
I'd like to give them a way to automatically script turning the Retrospect client off at the beginning of an experiment, and to turn it back on at the end (or, more likely, at the next reboot). The issue is probably the performance hit when the backup is running, rather than simultaneous access to the files. Ah, then I have two ideas if this is the case. 1) Give the user priority in the client. This may give enough bandwidth to the client while still getting backed up. Or maybe... 2) Make a separate backup server script for those data gathering machines. This way, they'll get a warning that the backup is about to start. The user can answer with "ok" or they can answer with a delay till x time (or for x minutes...I can't recall which it says). This way they'll have the option of delaying the backup till their machine is free. Would that work better for you? Re: G4s and error 519
So Retrospect reports errors that it finds in the network setup that doesn't affect ANYTHING else? If these errors existed then why does nothing else complain? Yet. I copy large files from one machine to another, but that never fails Yet. If it is a SCSI problem, then shouldn't Retrospect report it as such? I've not found 519's to be SCSI issues. They are network issues. And almost always hardware. If you're experiencing 519's on multiple servers then I'd take a hard look at the infrastructure in place. Somewhere there is a "frayed" cable or a port/switch/router/hub that's either failing or getting ready to fail. Backup software should the most reliable software in use on the network, yet Retrospect is the only software that consistently fails to do what it is supposed to. This *is* the most reliable software in use on your network. And, in addition, it is probably the most useful network assessment tool you have as well. If Retrospect is telling you that you have a network problem...you do (or will) indeed have a network problem. Consider looking at it as more than just backup software...consider looking at it as a diagnostic tool. Better than any other tool out there for finding hardware problems. I like Retrospect and simply want it to run correctly and of course reliably. It does run correctly and it does run reliably. Dantz just doesn't market all its features apparently. Wouldn't it be odd for them to put this out as a networking tool that does backup too? Better that it does the backups right and gives you the value add of being a kickin' proactive diagnostic as well. It's all in how you view it. :-) Besides, if you use this added value to your advantage and find the failing segment before it fails you will be a hero, get a raise, get a promotion, a nice Christmas bonus, maybe conquer the world. OK, I got a little carried away...maybe you won't get a promotion. Re: Backup renders ASIP server mute, deaf
Thanks for your reply. Why yes, I did order this G4 this summer. I'm forgetting what "MP" stands for, though. At any rate, I'm curious as to what the "known issues" you refer to are. I did read the Apple TIL #25147 on the Ethernet Update 1.0, which describes symptoms not quite like mine: Andrew, MP = Multiprocessor This is a newer issue than what the ether update addressed. There were a bunch (in round numbers) of postings on this at macfixit and I believe there's a TIL on it too that states that there isn't a fix for it yet but they're working on it. sigh I'd have to hit the web to get you more details but time doesn't allow it right at this moment (feel free to search though g). It's happening with Summer 2000 iMacs too as I recall. I can't try moving the backup drive at this time; the G4 has no SCSI card, and I have no other machine available, but I will hope to give this a try eventually. Ah, so I see weekend work in the making...hostile takeover of some unsuspecting users' machine. heh. Re: Feature suggestion: missing member notification
What I'd suggest that if someone is restoring, there should be a few alerts (or at least a couple of BLINK type messages) that it could be incomplete. Also, it would be useful if it could be indicated in the backup set list some sort of incomplete icon for a missing set, plus a text message. Owen, I understand your frustration here but it seems that you're asking software developers to include notifications or "backdoors" or whatever you want to call it to cover every possible situation that a user might run in to. Plainly put, you're asking that this developer put in a "feature" that will tell you if someone's been tinkering around in your machine. Frankly, that's what security software is for. In fact, Retrospect already has a security feature for access to backup sets so that co-tinkering can be avoided. Developers cannot possibly be held accountable for multiple admins/users/tinkerers working on one computer. Maybe that other person was trying to help you and when he/she couldn't find the needed tape, marked the member missing thinking they were doing the right thing (or maybe not, I dunno). I guess what I'm saying is that responsibility for what happens on my computer lies with me. If someone else is getting into my important files then it is my responsibility to secure the sytem from prying eyes or to train that person in my methods of backup/filing/restoring/working/whatever. It is not the responsibility of a company like Dantz to let me know that someone's been mucking around with my software. ok, what's going on here?
Leave it to a computer to make us feel humble. I know I must be missing something really simple here but I've got a problem that's got me stumped. Before calling it quits for the day I switch my location manager from my dial-up set to my Retrospect set. Location Manager being what it is...sometimes the configuration doesn't switch well and I need to restart (it seems to be related to how long I've been connected on the dial-up but that's another issue altogether). I launch Retrospect and go to configureclients to make sure all is well for the evening's backups. Now, here's the problem. For the past few days my clients are seen just fine when I manually check them. However, when I sit down at my computer in the morning I see that my Windows client is getting a -1028 error during the scripted backup. As soon as I see this, I launch Retrospect and do a run script and all goes swimmingly. Now, the Windows box isn't touched from the time I manually check it in the evening to the time I re-run the script in the morning. This worked just fine until recently. Nothing in my setup has changed at all except that I've put an Ecrix drive into the mix. But I can't see any reason why a new backup device would impact the client's ability to be seen during an unattended script. This only happens on the Windows client and it only happens on the unattended backup and there are no other errors. Manually checking it or doing an immediate run script are just fine. It's driving me mad (not a far drive, btw). Anything short of tossing out my Retro.Config file would be appreciated. Re: Windows 2000 Clients
After the client reboots, it suddenly doesn't work, unless i stopstart the Retrospect Client service on the 2000 machine after it boots. Hi Martjin, It sounds like you're backing up via static IP addresses but the clients are running on DHCP. Therefore, when they reboot they'll have a new IP address and Retrospect won't find them. You might want to check to make sure you're using Subnet Broadcast or Multicast so that the clients will automagically be found after the next reboot. Re: backup strategy
Maybe I don't need five storagesets? I've read somewhere one will do... I use VXA 170 meter tapes. What am I missing?? thanx, / jakob Jacob, First I want to suggest that a lot of your frustration can be diminished by having another go at reading the manual cover to cover (personally, I did it with highlighter and sticky notes in hand). I'd be willing to bet this will reduce your frustration level. This manual is not just an educational experience...it's an adventure. These guys are just warped enough...er, have a wry enough sense of humor to make the manual a not-so-dry read. It speaks to the end-user, rather than to the engineers. :-) That said, in order to decide how to best design your backup strategy, you will want to decide a few things: 1) the purpose for backing up 2) how much data can you afford to lose 3) how much change in data occurs each day/week/period 4) how many times per week/month can you rotate backup sets offsite 5) your budget for tapes (taking into account how much your budget would be effected to completely rebuild a system from scratch vs restoring from backup) 6) can/will any data be archived off the client workstations periodically (for instance, archiving a completed project for posterity) to CD. Once you've figured out your purpose in backing up and decided how much data you can afford to lose, then you can sit down with a calendar and decide how to design your strategy. I've found that the examples in the manual are perfect for most situations. One of the strategies may be right for you. We can't really tell you how many tapes to buy or how to design your system. What we can do is tell you what's been successful for us. For my clients I've found it best to run one full backup before making any final decisions. This gives me a starting point. Once I know how much initial tape space will be taken up, I can work from there on a tape budget. It will also give me a good idea of how long a full backup will take. Remember that because of the way Retrospect handles duplicates, you shouldn't need as many tapes or as much time as you may initially think. One full run on a fresh tape(s) will help you to gauge your needs better. IMO, backing up is more than "how many tapes do I need to buy to fit all my data on a full backup". It is a strategy. Re: restore older files only?
I want to back up the G3's and restore the files onto the G4's, but I don't want to overwrite newer items with older items. (especially things like "Finder" and "System"). Is there a way I can prevent Retro overwriting corresponding items that have a newer mod date? Don't know if this'll be useful for your situation, but it works for me. I use two tools to do this: Retrospect and Conflict Catcher. 1) Restore the G3 "stuff" to a folder on the new drive. Rename the G3's system folder to "Previous System Folder" (or something of your own choosing). You can pick and choose what to restore but that could make the process take longer than necessary, imho. 2) Install Conflict Catcher 3) Have CC8 do your system merge. It's really quite cool and is much swifter than comparing system folders file by file. 4) File away anything else you might want from the restored folder and toss the rest. hth, Pam Pam Lefkowitz, President Consulting Core Computing Technologies, Inc.
