Hi Bill
Try replacing root=/dev/sdb1 with root=UUID
of this is that if I want to attach a SATA hd to my
main system which currently has 3 IDE hds, I need to change the GRUB
boot entry and be prepared for all of the IDE drives (hds and DVD-RW)
to be deprecated by 1 - ie /sda becomes /sdb, /sdb becomes /sdc etc.

I've just been having a look at the new Feisty Fawn (groan!) version of
Ubuntu. In the Add/Remove programs
Seems that the Vista launch at Hardly Normals has already happened. at
midnight last-night.
Caught part of the Ch 7 11AM news which showed the countdown at a HN
store with Gerry Harvey spruiking their deal with M$.
Showed some IT student buying (the only oz copy?) the Bill Gates
autographed
to spend the money on a Wii or
even an XBox 360.
I haven't used Windows (XP Pro) since last April and haven't missed it (
well, except for the Trojans, Virii etc.).

I've just watched a preview of Vista on the Seven Sunrise program and
all I can say is: Wow!!
I get a new looking desktop
-2 capable
Modem/Router.
Thanks

monitoring programs but haven't as yet found
one that does what I want.
I'm using Kubuntu 6.06 Dapper and Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy on a home LAN.
Thanks in advance for URL's/program names etc.

Hi Gerald
Check the settings in AlsaMixer.
May need to set volume via AlsaMixer and KMix as well as in individual
programs. Its a bit of a balancing act in my experience.
Another thought - Does the laptop allow the sound to be turned on/off by
way of function keys?
