I have used Lacie in the past. But have been switching to Western Digital for
the last two years. Only last week bought a 500 Gb Western Digital My Passport
Essential. It is certainly very small and USB 2 bus powered. Though it needs to
be run off the machine. I tried a powered hub and
realise Intel Macs could boot from USB. I hadn't tried it and just
assumed it was only FW, as the non-Intel ones are.

As long as you follow some basic rules you do not need them. If your
machine has its firewall on and is behind a hardware firewall router
you should be perfectly safe. Though it will help if you change your
router password from the default. If necessary get a password manager

I used Senuti and it went fine. No problems at all. I do not think
that they removed the files but just copied them so you should have
the chance to try out a number of them. All you really need is to get
the data off, then wipe the iPods when you are happy. Then reload via
iTunes.
