You know that this mailinglist is for the Freenetproject (http://freenetproject.org)
and THIS Freenet is a peer-to-peer network, do you??
It's an anonymous and censorfree network where every user share space on their
harddisk and bandwidth. ->it's different, it's not like Napster, KaZaA, ...!
(read more on http://freenetproject.org/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=WhatIsFreenet )

Freenet from the Freenetproject is NOT an ISP. You need an internet connection
to run a Freenet node and to use this network.

The donation for this OpenSource project is for paying a full time coder and
other things. If you really mean this Freenet I'm talking about, send a
second eMail to this mailinglist. We will help you to get started.
(I think you mean that Freenet is some sort of an ISP and you have to
pay for it a donation through PayPal... I'm hoping that I don't
missunderstand you...)

Stef

You can check this, read below.

surf to http://hawk.freenetproject.org:8080/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/devl
fill in your subscribed eMail address and click on "Edit Options".

For some things (like view other freenetproject.org-subscriptions, edit
options) you need your password. If you don't know anymore your
password, click on "Email My Password To Me".

With your password you can change your account options.
You can retrieve this information and change all things with
email, simply send an eMail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
with the subject "help" (without ").

I hope that it works; yesterday I did this steps with WWW
and now my devl-account is reactivated.

put in your subscribed eMail address and click "Edit Options".
Then you can click on "Email my password to me".
You will get your password, I did it yesterday with success.

For possible actions via eMail (like unsubscribe), send

subject "help" (without ").

Quoted from this help-mail (sent by the mailinglist):
"The following describes commands you can send to get
information about and control your subscription to Mailman lists at
this site. A command can be in the subject line or in the body of the
message."

"unsubscribe [address]
Unsubscribe from the mailing list. Your password must match
the one you gave when you subscribed. If you are trying to
unsubscribe from a different address than the one you
subscribed from, you may specify it in the 'address' field."

->That means in your case:
Send an eMail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with
"unsubscribe " followed by your password in the subject or
body. That's it.

I never did it, but it SHOULD work.

Yes, there's a line in the config file:
# The port to listen for incoming FNP (Freenet Node Protocol) connections on.
listenPort=XYZ

It's a randomly chosen port by the setup or by the generation of the config file.
This port is usually between 1024 and 65535, the node announce itself ONLY
with the current IP address and the chosen FNP port. (that's a node reference,
look in the seednodes.ref-file)

Other nodes only tries to connect on the FNP-port.
I see also a lot of listening ports between 1025 and 4500, but I don't know the
reason. (see the attached text file)
Client programs uses only 8481 for the Freenet Client Protocol (FCP),
for the browser (->mainport) and 8891 for the distribution node (if
not deactivated).

This situation IS a security problem. But read Freenet's port usage in my
answer above. You only need to forward the FNP port to the Freenet node.

Under Linux there is a command "whereis". It looks in all paths for
executables and can show you where it is exactly.
Perhaps there's something similiar in OS X?

You have to download this file ("freenet-ext.jar") and to put it
in the ./lib directory.

Here are the specific lines in "Build.bat":

if exist lib\freenet-ext.jar goto haveext
echo freenet-ext.jar not found:
echo Please download http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/freenet-ext.jar
echo into the lib directory.
goto end

Fred uses a own library. If you want to use a fast platform specific
native implementation, then you have to use the Onion FEC library:
http://onionnetworks.com/developers/

AFAIK you can find something on the Nubile-freesite, but it's perhaps outdated.
(I never used this native code)

>I ran updatesnapshot about 2 hrs ago.

It's not a problem in fred builds, this "Unable to find native library for fecX"
is a status message; there's nothing wrong.

On http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/ you can find all files.
(but you don't know which build is in which TGZ-file... :( )

The Windows snapshot updater always gets the file "freenet-latest.jar".
We know that it has been compiled on January 25th and it contains the
build 547.
I suppose that people without a backup can extract the older build from
the TGZ-file made on the day before:
Extract the "freenet.jar" file from "freenet-20030124.tgz" in your
Freenet program directory. I bet that you'll have now build 546.
(if not then try "freenet-20030123.tgz")

>Dear Sir/Madam,

The Freenet Daemon must be able to connect to other nodes on the Internet.
FNP (Freenet Node Protocol) now uses TCP; the most nodes listen on ports
between 1024 and 65535. If your Internet Service Provider allows to
establish those connection to the Internet, then you can run Freenet.
If your ISP allows only connections to the Internet by standard services
like WWW, eMail, news, [...] over their proxyservers then you have bad luck.

Freenet works best on a fast computer with a fast Internet connection;
on a fixed IP address and a open TCP port (other nodes tries to contact
your node on this port) and when you run Freenet all the time.

If you can run Freenet, then there's "no limit" for information,
no possibility to censor something.

Freenet is beta software. It's possible that Freenet works better/
over more connection types (like over eMail) and other things
in a higher version. Try it out!

Yes, something is strange. The site is always retrievable, but something with
the timing is wrong:

retrieved DBR version date of the latest article on Cruft
../cruft//?date=20021124Friday, November 22, 2002
../cruft//?date=20021125Saturday, November 23, 2002

../cruft//?date=20021129Monday, November 25, 2002

I think it's not a problem with the node build. I have "Build: 627" and
I can load *all* Freesites. (or is there a different result on a stable node?)

Perhaps it's a mistake on Cruft's side (wrong version inserted)?

You got a very old Frost version... Where did you get it?

The official website of the Frost developer is:
http://jtcfrost.sourceforge.net/

The newest files under http://jtcfrost.sourceforge.net/files

I can't find this files either. They are perhaps from the old Freenet0.3 times?
Frost (newest version) and Freenet0.5 works great.

In Freenet0.4 with the encrypted datastore the node used "node_*" to access
and to decrypt the datastore.

I don't know if every node in Freenet0.5 uses the DS in the same way.
Perhaps you can only use your existing datastore with a node on the SAME
FNP port and with the specific "node_*" file??
In this case you can feed your new node with the routing files from the
old one (to keep your good references to other Freenet nodes).
It's in the "lsnodes_*" and "rtprops_*".

[freenet-support] HOWTO unsubscribe

2002-09-23 Thread Stef

Hello spammers on this mailinglist!

You are annoyed about the Beta version 0.4 of Freenet? You can try Freenet in some
weeks/months, it improves (I
hope) with every found bug in the software. If the most part of Freenet is fixed and
the code doesn't change so
much, then I promise you the documentation will be better.
You can try the "competition networks": GNUnet (http://www.gnu.org/software/GNUnet/),
Entropy
(http://entropy.stop1984.com/); perhaps there are other ones.

I never unsubscribed on this list, but I can say what I know. "Bruno" is like a little

If you forget your password, don't worry, you will receive a monthly

I never used the above commands, but I think when you don't make mistakes, then the

unsubscribe you.

I hope I could help you.

[freenet-support] Fwd: Be patient and explore; this may help get past the "Failure Stage"

2002-09-21 Thread Stef

I'm sure that Nicholas wanted to post this advice to the support-mailinglist,
and not directly to my mailbox...

(I know Freenet, Frost and FMB; I'm not a newbie...) :)

These may not be much help, but they are worth reading. But when you get
done (for Frost) I suggest opening freenet with the right click menu in
your tray (lower right) to be sure it is active and not "just running."
Then click on your icon for Frost. Explore the map in left pane. Click on
any item at end of branches and examine all that is in the right pane. Try
clicking on one item at a time (give more time that internet normally
requires to react) and see what has happened. IF nothing is evident try
another item. Slowly you will be come acquainted with it.

If you read a URL in a message, I find it best to highlight, copy and then
paste into the window on the freenet screen (or almost as successful in the
usual browser entry field). Be very patient in some cases, moderately so
in some others. To down load a file from frost, you do not seem to need to
enter the keys although they will appear in right pane. Just highlight the
name of the item of interest and then click on the arrow pointing downward
in horizontal bar running across the right pane. The arrow should change
color (orange+yellow) when it is active.

Generally just do a lot of trial and error once you get a couple of things
done successful as one success usually means the system is all working (but
something may just not work because they really don't work).

Good luck.

Re: [freenet-support] Attn.: webmaster of fmb and anyone else that can help

2002-09-03 Thread Stef

I can't believe that Frost causes the corrupt datastore bug.
This bug happens very often, when a datatore is near full.

That's a good idea to use a Freenet-only machine on LAN,
and then use the FCP connection to this machine for
client applications. (stability, security, ...)

Do you use an up to date version of the Java Runtime Environment?
And a stable one? What's the output of "java -version"?
Try it with a new version from java.sun.com.

I use the Sun JRE version 1.4. My permanent node runs well with FMB, Frost
and FProxy (surfing) on the same machine. No problem with BlueScreens,
rarely corrupt DS bug, but bad memory management on WinME.

Stef

Re: [freenet-support] Problem to configure Freenet with my firewall

2002-08-30 Thread Stef

Hello,

I don't know IPCop, but I found some information about your problem.

I suppose that you want to run a Freenet node in your network. The node must be
accessible from the Internet to
work well. (in detail: the node listen for connections on the FNP-port, FNP=Freenet
Node Protocol; FCP is the
Freenet Client Protocol and serves the clients in your network)

Here can you find documentation in different languages:
http://www.ipcop.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/IPCop/IPCopDocumentationv01

On this page you find information about portforwarding in English:
http://www.ipcop.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/IPCop/IPCopAdministrationv01#5_Administration_amp_Configurati
Search for the string "Port Forwarding" and you are there. I hope you find infos for
your problem in this
section or in the next section.

You can choose a FNP-port or take the randomly generated one from the Freenet setup.
Now you have to forward
this TCP-portnumber from the Internet side of your firewall to your Freenet node in
the network. Everyone from
the Internet should be able to contact to this port on your firewall.
In "freenet.conf" or "freenet.ini" set your firewall's IP address as "ipAddress=".
If your Internet side
has a dynamic IP you should use a dynamic DNS service like dyndns.org; then you can
set
"ipAddress=xyz.dyndns.org" (the node needs his IP to Internet to announce itself to
other nodes)

Greetings,
Stef

Re: [freenet-support] Attn.: webmaster of fmb and anyone else that can help

2002-08-25 Thread Stef

I'm new to this mailing list, but I know Freenet, FMB and Frost. I hope I can help you:

- You can download Frost from http://jtcfrost.sourceforge.net/downloadindex.html
(www.freenetproject.org -> "Third Party Tools" -> Frost)
To run Frost you only need "Frost.jar". In a new directory run the command "java -jar
frost.jar" and Frost
will start. Fill in the preferences (if not standard, for example other Freenet host,
port, ...) and wait for a
while. After some hours your Frost is updated with the newest boards. In the
Information window you can add
other boards to listen and post. Other questions: please ask in the Frost board
"frost" or "frost_help"

- For FMB: It's the software made by nacktschneck, his freesite is edition-based. (for
Freenet help read
Nubile's site http://127.0.0.1:/SSK@qe3ZRJg1Nv1XErADrz7ZYjhDidUPAgM/nubile/10// )
FMB is now in the version alpha4a, if a new alpha version is out, you can surf to the
6th version. You need
"fmb.jar" to run FMB with the command "java -jar fmb.jar". Then you should chose an
unique nickname; your
private/public keypair will be generated. Everyone can if a message is yours by your
public key.
Then you should rightclick to some active users and listen to their channel.

- I don't think that the freesite creator of colours is the same like the one of the
FMB-site. He wrote on his
site, that you can send him a feedback over Nearly Instant Messaging (NIM, it's
embedded in the freesite), over
the "colours" board in Frost or over FMB. His nick on FMB is "nobody else". With the
coloured links on the top
you can surf to other editions. If you reached the end of the chain, then is that
edition not yet inserted (or
it's fallen out of Freenet).

Good luck!

Greetings,
Stef

Re: [freenet-support] Re: unsubscribe

2002-08-25 Thread Stef

I'm new to this mailing list (eight days ago), but perhaps I can help you:

After my subscription I received a mail with the subject "Welcome to the "support"
mailing list" from support-
