Hi. My sister tells me that this url goes to an article that has a series of slides. Using Windows XP, WE 8.4, FF or IE, I was unable to access the text on the slides. I have WE 9.1, but, am waiting for my new desktop to install it and use it with Windows 7 or 10. Is there a way to access the text in this article? Is this a common practice of MSN to present the articles as slides? Is there an alternative (mobile) site that has better accessibility? http://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/pets/8-surprising-things-dogs-can-tell-about-you/ss-AAcVtti#image=1 Martha ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. WindowEyes and Common Winforms Controls
Hi Guys: Has WindowEyes ever started looking at the standard Winforms Controls for accessibility and their selectable Accessibility settings for use with screen readers? I am again considering the TabbedDocument, views, control and perhaps the Winforms Grid control with lists or tables inside each grid column for a display on a windows form. In the past WindowEyes did not handle the TabbedDocument control well and I have never even tried the grid control pretty much guessing WE would either fail completely or be a mess to try and use. The consideration of WindowEyes of the old, dos style, xml quote standard windows controls is decades out of use by anyone who programs against the windows platform and the Visual Studio quote standard controls listed in the windows tool box for development of windows based applications is what is, and has for many years now, been what all windows developers use. But Ihave never heard of WindowEyes having any accessibility documentation on either the accessibility of these controls nor what properties to set to make them accessible to WindowEyes. Has anyone heard about WindowEyes getting more involved with the modern windows platforms and the related controlls used by windows developers or are they still only considering the old dos controls the quote standard windows controls? WE Development Platform
Hi Again: Do you know if the developers at WindowEyes, AI2, have anyone developing full-time using Visual Studio? I just thought about this since I read something about another screen reader having folks using Visual Studio full-time and thus their developers are very aware of the windows controls used to develop projects against windows and even for the web. There are great project management tools produced by Microsoft, Visual Studio is the gold standard when it comes to any Microsoft Project development and the Microsoft Database and Database Management tools the best on the market and... WindowEyes is suppose to be a Microsoft Partner so shouldn't I expect them to be using the Microsoft development platforms and management software on a regular basis? If this all sounds like griping perhaps you are right but I have been wating and waiting to hear that WindowEyes would be going Microsoft ever since the big publicity campaign about WindowEyes becoming a Microsoft Partner but heard nothing since. I am not slamming WE but trying to get a handle on if it is going to be a useful tool for a major project I am building in Visual Studio which right now it is not a solid choice. Just frustrated with the hope and now the dwindling expectations of using WindowEyes on modern development platforms - especially Visual Studio. Hi Martha: I just tried the link with the latest version of Firefox and Window-eyes 9.1. I was able to read, what I assume is the text of the slides, because when I clicked on the Next Slide button, the text changed. Re: Is this a paid upgrade?
I'm also getting an error message but this is due to excessive traffic. Everyone wants the upgrade right now. As far as it being paid, I don't think so, because it shows I have one sma count remaining, and i've had one remaining since version 9 came out. So I think we're all just gonna have to wait til the excitement dies down and we can give the servers a bit of a break. Re: Window-Eyes 9.2 is Now Available!
Hi You don't need to go that route to upgrade, simply visit http://www.gwmicro.com/upgrade, enter your serial number and it'll generate an upgrade. I bet a lot of people are doing this now, so patience is a virtue. I tried upgrading directly from within window-eyes by going to the help menu, and then check for updates, and after a couple minutes I received an error message saying that the download wasn't successful and to try again in a few minutes. It's probably because everyone's hammering the servers to get the upgrade. I'll hang out for a few and try it again in a bit. Window-eyes 9.2 is now available
Hi. Those who are receiving an error when attempting to download the upgrade of Window-eyes 9.2 have encountered this error before, smile, and you are not alone, believe me!This isn't my first rodeo, and I am certain I can speak for others. I tried downloading the upgrade from the help menu on my desktop computer running Windows 8.1 and on my laptop running Windows 7 64 bit home premium edition with the same error Loy mentioned. I usually have been able to get an upgrade installed on the day of its release, but I'll try every few minutes as in the past. I have personal business to take care of later on today, and so if I don't get the upgrade downloaded and installed before that time, that will allow more time for a break, smile. This upgrade sounds very promising, and yes, I reserved my copy of Windows 10, smile. Also, when I try to check the update page to go over the information concerning the s m a count and the other various messages, the page will not load. I, like others, am chalking things up to the overwhelmed servers. Chris, hammered sounds like a good word, smile. . RE: a problem web site using W E 9.1
Hi Don, I just checked out the Shop Plans page on www.selectelwireless.com. Whoever created this site made little or no effort to make the content accessible. The first red flag was that the home page didn't have any headings. Not good. On the Shop Plans page, each plan has its details presented as text in an image. And, the images have vague and inaccurate alt text descriptions like Value Plan and Home Plan. So, the author will need to add more descriptive alt text to the plan images or redesign the page so the plan details are presented as text instead of images. Please reach out to this company if you haven't already done so to make them aware of these accessibility barriers. Thanks, Marc -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+msolomon=aisquared@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Donald L. Roberts via Talk Sent: Monday, July 27, 2015 12:06 AM To: t...@window-eyes.com Subject: a problem web site using W E 9.1 I need to know whether the below problem is operator error on my part, or is the problem the web site design? Specifically, please look at www.selectelwireless.com and try to figure out the specifics of their phone plans. I can click on the various links but am not able to read any info regarding the allowed minutes and costs of the various plans. This is just one of several sites I have encountered which exhibit this behavior, and it doesn’t matter whether I am using Firefox or internet explorer 11. My results are similar if I use the shark. It certainly doesn’t hurt my ego to be told that I am doing something wrong because I just want to learn the right way to read such a site. Thanks for feedback. Window-eyes 9.2 is now available
Here's a follow up message. Just before I started to type this e-mail, I received two different messages when trying to download Window-eyes 9.2. The first message that came up was a message telling me that an active internet connection is required to download the upgrade. I tried the bard website and the page came right up. I then once again tried to download Window-eyes 9.2, but rather than waiting a few minutes for the error to be generated, the error generated immediately when pressing the enter key. This scenario occurred using Internet Explorer 11. Yes, I have Firefox and Google Chrome installed And I received the second error message twice immediately when pressing the enter key. . Well, after I send this message, I'm gonna give the download another whirl, smile. Tips For Those Doing New Upgrades!
Hello everybody, I wanted to be absolutely sure you folks are aware of this. Several of you no doubt arre, but during upgrades like this, the server or servers that are used get hammered so that some people can't upgrade successfully. Another problem can be ISP packet inspection and other similar issues between you and the AISquared servers and other crazy Internet related things. So keep all of this in mind. The Internet is great, but when servers are hammered, some do better than others. I hope this helps! Richard, As mentioned, there are a couple screens that come up that do not have Window-Eyes running. These couple screens will require you to run Narrator. Windows 10 will block the installation of any version less than 9.2. 2) You manually install Windows 10 on a system Windows 10 is no different than any other operating system at this point. Window-Eyes itself can not be installed until Windows 10 itself is fully installed so you would need to use Windows Narrator to help you with the Windows 10 installation. Windows Narrator can be launched with Windows-Enter. 3) You are upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 You must have Window-Eyes 9.2 installed on your Windows 7 system before the Windows 10 upgrade will allow you to continue. I have not seen the final Windows 10 upgrade which will start being pushed out on Wednesday so I can't say specifically what will happen but on the internal builds I've been testing I've seen the following. I had Windows 9.2 installed and running on my Windows 7 system when I started the Windows 10 upgrade. Everything was working well and speaking perfectly. However, there are eventually two back to back screens which have Window-Eyes unloaded and require you to launch Narrator. After those two screens the upgrade will continue and Window-Eyes will eventually launch and be working under Windows 10. However, under Windows 7 only there is a problem with the Window-Eyes accessibility driver. The issue is Windows 7 requires a mirror driver which Window-Eyes has. But after the upgrade, Windows 10 does not support mirror drivers so it blocks them leaving Window-Eyes without the driver causing there to be no off screen model. In most cases you don't even need an off screen model but it is still important to resolve this. The easiest way to resolve this is to simply run your Window-Eyes 9.2 upgrade on itself under Windows 10. So after Window 10 has been installed just download your Window-Eyes 9.2 upgrade and run it. This will install the necessary accessibility driver causing you to have a full 9.2 working copy under Windows 10. 4) You are upgrading from Windows 8.x to Windows 10 You must have Window-eyes 9.2 installed on your Windows 8 system before the Windows 10 upgrade will allow you to continue. Like Windows 7 there are a couple screens that come up without Window-Eyes running so you will need Narrator. After that Window-Eyes will come up and your Windows 10 will be running perfectly with Window-Eyes 9.2. There is nothing extra you need to do. Windows 8 and Windows 10 both use an accessibility driver, not a mirror driver, so life is good after the upgrade. If you uncheck the use autocomplete for address bar check box first, then several other check boxes will become unavailable in whatever check state they are in. It's best to tab through them all and decide if one or more of them is giving, or will give, you problems, then uncheck the use autocomplete for address bar last before tabbing to ok and pressing Enter. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+fenderwal=sbcglobal@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Chris Grabowski via Talk Sent: Monday, July 27, 2015 3:09 AM To: richard kurlander; Window-Eyes Discussion List Subject: RE: turning off suggestions Hi, Turn them off completely. 1. RE: Is this a paid upgrade?
Window-Eyes 9.2 is a paid upgrade. In the US, the upgrade price is $49. But, if you have an active Software Maintenance Agreement (SMA), the upgrade is free and will not use an upgrade count. For example, if you have an active SMA with one upgrade remaining, you can download 9.2 and you will still have one upgrade remaining on your SMA. If you own version 9.0 or 9.1, you can purchase an SMA to get version 9.2 plus two future upgrades. Also, if you have Office 2010 or newer installed, you can get version 9.2 at no additional cost through the Offer for Users of Microsoft Office (www.WindowEyesForOffice.com). Please keep in mind that if have a retail license and switch to the free version, you would forfeit the free technical support and premium voices that are included with your retail license. I hope this helps. RE: Window-eyes 9.2 is now available
Yes, Window-Eyes 9.2 is a recommended upgrade for all of our customers even if you aren't using Windows 10. The upgrade includes new features and improvements that are not specific to Windows 10. You can read about all of the changes in the Window-Eyes 9.2 Read Me: http://www.gwmicro.com/Window-Eyes/Version_History/index.php?details=9.2.0.0. As far as how easy it is to roll back to 9.1, it would require that you uninstall Window-Eyes completely and then reinstall 9.1. These steps are easy for some to perform but more difficult for others. RE: Changing sorting criteria for messages in Outlook
Yes. Go to the View ribbon using alt V, then tab or control tab until you hear Arrange by. Alt arrow down and tab around the options. By default Outlook sort by date with the most recent on top. If you want to reverse the current order so that, say, oldest messages is at the top of your inbox, you'll want the View ribbon again and the Reverse order button is one button past the Arrange by button on the ribbon. The keystrokes to get right to the buttons are Alt V for view ribbon and B for Arrange by or V for Reverse Order. You'll be making the arrange by selection for just the folder you are currently in. If you want all folders to look like how you just set it, then go to the first option on the View ribbon, which is Change Vie. Do an alt down arrow to open the menu then arrow up once to get to the last option which is to save the current folder view to other folders. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+robin_van_lant=key@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Rick Blair via Talk Sent: Saturday, July 25, 2015 5:04 AM To: 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: Changing sorting criteria for messages in Outlook Is there a simple way to change the sorting criteria for messages in Outlook? After the page opens where you check for updates, press enter on the visit update website. Since there is a lot of internet traffic because people are trying to download the upgrade, the page may not load. But if it does load, use the usual navigation keys to find the status of your s m a if you have paid for one. For the person who asked if the upgrade is a paid upgrade, if you have a software maintenance agreement, the upgrade is free. Please refer to the readme which clearly explains the upgrade information. I would suggest contacting Ai Squared to find out about the price of an upgrade is you don't have an s m a. Hi Reeva, This is an excellent question. In 2015, we will be releasing a product called ZoomText Fusion. This product will combine the power of ZoomText and Window-Eyes in a single product. ZoomText Fusion is specifically designed for people who have progressive eye conditions or are in transition from low vision to blindness. ZoomText Fusion includes all of the power of ZoomText Magnifier, ZoomText Magnifier/Reader, as well as complete and full screen reading into one, single, integrated product. Re: WindowEyes and Common Winforms Controls
Umm, I think we've talked before and I have no problem using the WinForm controls all the time with WE, so I guess it depends on how much time your willing to put in on it. There are ways to handle the controls by setting their values textually, and sighted assistance is very helpful. However, it is tough. That's the good news. The bad news is that WinForms and WPF apps are not the norm any more, it's all about creating Win apps and store apps and standard based Windows desktop programming is going the way like your reference to DOS. Have a look into universal apps in Win 10 and you'll see what I mean. That's the future of development. Have you looked at or heard about Visual Studio 2015, using XAML and trying to put together your own UI from scratch? Good luck. On 7/27/2015 6:49 AM, Rick Thomas via Talk wrote: Hi Guys: Has WindowEyes ever started looking at the standard Winforms Controls for accessibility and their selectable Accessibility settings for use with screen readers? Re: installing Windows 10
Hi Doug: Thanks for pointing out the problem with the mirror drivers in Windows 7. Now suppose I have Windows 7 and want to stay with it, but I have downloaded Windows 9.2. How will the lack of a mirror driver affect me? Will there be any applications which will become unusable for me? Kevin Huber On 7/27/15, Doug Geoffray via Talk talk@lists.window-eyes.com wrote: Don, There are four scenarios when it comes to Windows 10 and Window-Eyes. Let me address each. 1) You get a new computer and it already has Windows 10 installed You must have the full Window-Eyes 9.2 installer. Regarding how Microsoft is going to upgrading a billion devices to Windows 10, there is an interesting blog post you may find interesting: http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/07/02/windows-10-preparing-to-upgrade-one-billion-devices/ Regards, Doug On 7/27/2015 10:44 AM, Don H via Talk wrote: When Windows 10 becomes available can it be installed without sighted help? Let me address each. 1) You get a new computer and it already has Windows 10 installed You must have the full Window-Eyes 9.2 installer. Re: installing Windows 10
Kevin, Oh, there is no problem at all if you just stay with Windows 7. The upgrade always contains the mirror driver when being installed under Windows Vista and Windows 7 and the accessibility driver when being installed under Windows 8.x and Windows 10. It just figures out your environment and installs the correct one. The issue is only when you upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 because the driver itself never got switched from mirror to accessibility. But since all Window-Eyes upgrade installers have everything, this is why I suggested just running it after going to 10 as it will realize you are in 10 and install the accessibility driver. Thanks Doug: That's a great relief. Kevin Huber On 7/27/15, Doug Geoffray via Talk talk@lists.window-eyes.com wrote: Kevin, Oh, there is no problem at all if you just stay with Windows 7. The usual types of interfaces most financial analysts use is an excel style layout which is controlled usually by tabbed views to display the diferent content. This project is not for phones or apps but a true desktop project for standard or large displays. How did you find out that the usual WinForms controls were no longer supported in VS 2015 in favor of the xaml controls? I hadent heard they were being deprecated from any of the programmers using VS 2015 but I never thought to ask them that specifically. As for making the Winforms controls more accessible I want: A Master Detail layout with a Listbox at the top: A couple or 3 controls under it that get dynamically loaded from a DataBase and from the data held in the DataTable bound to the listbox with many sortable columns. I am thinking that the groups of controls perhaps 3 textboxes or some type of grid and a couple of textboxes will be in each view and each view will have its own MenuBar with various selections including sorts that will sort the MasterListbox based on the columns related to that particular view. If I use a grid control inside the view as one of the controls it would have perhaps 7 columns and about 30 rows along with each column having a heading and each row having a heading and then the 2 textboxes holding notes and related metrix for each ticker as it is arrowed over in the master listbox. I tried WindowEyes with a TabbedDocument some time ago and opted for using a text box with lines of details in it as it read very well with WindowEyes but now that I am thinking that this puppy may some day get published I am considering a more modern layout as described above. I will likely go ahead with the design using a tabbed document initially and perhaps you can help me set it up to be accessible with WindowEyes so navigation works smoothly through the list, the view with its MenuBar and dropdown MenuItems and the Grid with its columns and rows and the tab list of available views. My problem before was that tabbing around or arrowing I had trouble getting into the tab list once in the view content with the textboxes and, in this case the Grid which get dynamically updated. Perhaps a hot key to jump to the tab list from inside the view content and some way to read that I am in the tab list would work but I am not sure how to setup a hot key to jump focus to the tab list - but I havent looked at it in a long time now. How have you handle navigation of TabbedDocuments in your projects? RE: Problem with selecting text.
Hello Chris. This is Sky. If your talking about internet explorer, they have changed the how you select text selection to how a sighted person would do it. In IE, to select a line of text, you hit the function key f8, to make your first selection. Then, you use your up and down arrow keys, or the left and right arrow keys, or the control arrow keys to find where you want to end. Then, you hit f8 again, to finish your selection. A dialog comes up. You have 3 choices. The first choice, is to copy the selection with playn text. This would be like how you would do it in notepad with the shift arrow keys and control c for copy. Next, is a button that says copy text with formatting. What this does, is it copies the selection but it preserves the font information and the formatting information that is on the web page. The next button is reset selection, which, as the name suggests, resets the selection. The last button, is cancel, which cancels the dialog. I hope this helps. Sky. PS. I am also Window-Eyes certified which means I will be able to help users and new users Window-Eyes. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+skyt=shaw...@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Chris Judd via Talk Sent: Monday, July 27, 2015 9:54 PM To: window eyes talk list Talk@lists.window-eyes.com Subject: Problem with selecting text. RE: windows XP support, gone.
Pamela, Some people said it worked under WE 9 and WE 9.1 and GW Micro said try at your own risk as it was not tested with XP. Now it flat won't work which does not surprise me in the least. If these people want to stay current with their screen reader then they will have to upgrade their OS or get a new computer. WE 9.2 Bugs for Word 2010
Hello I installed WE 9.2. Then I installed the latest factory settings for Office 2010. Yu have the option to leave, replace, or merge dictionaries; I chose merge. Then document text was read garbled. I went back and picked replace instead, and document text read as expected. Another problem. While in Word 2010, I move onto a word, bring up the shortcut menu, pick synonyms, and choose a replacement word. Then, the read current line hotkey says no menu item. If I press Ctrl+Backslash and Escape, then the replaced text reads properly. The best to all the AI Squared team!
