RE: Jaws and copy text question

2017-05-26 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
That’s how it often goes with some new things.

At least JAWS has a kind of equivalent method that can be employed if you like
the f8 method. True, not the same keystrokes, but, it does achieve pretty much
the same thing.

Just shows how folks can get used to, then embrace something they first aren’t
sure about.

I tell you, the Window-Eyes method for copying text is less cumbersome.

Wow, I wish I heard this when the F8 method was first introduced in 9.0.
If I remember right, it was the worst feature ever introduced. (smile)

Hi,
My original question on this thread was how to close a programme and
give focus to the desktop while using Jaws and have speech.

Upon exiting a programme like Thunderbird with alt F4, where Window-Eyes
gave focus to the Desktop with speech, Jaws does not. Well, on my system
anyway. The only way I can give focus to the Desktop and have speech is
to to press Windows d after exiting the programme.

Pressing Windows m or Windows d does give focus to the Desktop with
speech but the programme has only been minimized and not closed.

By just using alt F4, can anyone exit a programme or drive, give focus
to the Desktop with Jaws talking.

Thanks
Neville.

RE: Raul, Carol is happily using the Caps-Lock key

2017-05-26 Thread David Moore via Talk
I know many people including me, who have a desktop and still use the laptop
layout for JAWS, because you gain a lot of extra commands that are easier to
perform than always using the numpad, plus, you gain the caps lock. For
example, try this command using the numpad LOL! To look up a word your cursor
is sitting on and get its definition using research it, press Insert+Windows+R.
The definition will come up immediately. Now, Try using Caps lock+Windows+R and
see how much easier that is to do LOL!

Well, my laptop has a full-size keyboard; so, on the NumPad, I turn off the
NumLock and use the 0 key as the Insert key. I'd only need to use the
CapsLock as a modified Insert key if my laptop DOES NOT have regular
computer keyboard. In essence, whether on a laptop, or on a desktop
computer, I always use the default desktop keyboard setting.

Re: Jaws and desktop

2017-05-26 Thread Neville via Talk

Hi,
My original question on this thread was how to close a programme and
give focus to the desktop while using Jaws and have speech.

Thanks
Neville.

the correct key is windows d. not windows m. windows m will not
minimize things
like dialog boxes that may be opened in a program. windows d will
minimize

everything.

Try using windows key M to get back to the desktop.

Hi,
Just authorized the latest copy of Jaws and very much a learner.

When exiting a programme, say Thundrbird, or exiting a drive for the
Desktop, ,after pressing alt F4 Jaws goes quiet. The pressing of
Windows d once or twice is required to place focus back on the Desktop.

Is this annoying behaviour normal for Jaws or do I need to change
some setting somewhere? If so, which setting and where?

Thanks
Neville.

Now that was truly hilarious Olusegun. Even though I hate the death of
Window-Eyes, I really enjoyed your message. Of course, this could be in bad
taste, but I wish it had been the biggest giant instead because I realize
after taking it for a spin for a day or so just how powerful Window-Eyes
truly was with it's more open scripting nature than JAWS. Plus, just the way
things are done in JAWS to me seems a little antiquated and clunky. But I
suppose I just have to get used to it and I really am grateful for the
opportunity.

Re: Message numbers in particular mailboxes?

2017-05-26 Thread Carol and Roger via Talk
On my computer, and it's getting to where I am afraid to post anything,
the number on the outside of the folder, at least for me, using
Thunderbird, indicates the number of unread messages. Once I delete
messages, I (because I have multiple accounts) shift tab to the folder
list and right arrow twice to refresh the numbers and then left arrow
twice to get back to the folders list and the numbers automatically have
updated. Since I can't keep tract of the actual number of messages with
Jaws, I use this a lot to keep up with unread messages.

Carol, who is taking a break from Thunderbird.

Hi there Folks!

It seem as though after deleting messages from particular boxes, the
message number doesn't seem to change. For example, I have a box
called important. Let say there is 100 messages in this box and I
decide to delete 20 of them. When I shift tab back to the important
box Jaws still reports there are 100 messages in this box. I
frequently empty and compress the trash boxes so I don't believe this
is an actual issue. Does anyone know what I might try to get the
correct number of messages in each of my boxes? Thanks much! de

understand the name zoomtext fusion is being used, it's a different

zoomtext to work with jaws, zoomtext hotkeys were changed. I can't get
clear answer on this but my understanding is that in the new zoomtext

Kate has been my voice for screenreading for almost 14 years. I need her. I
bought the we version of zoomtext fusion as i was using we for office and

Fortunately, my husband revived my Window7 machine and Window-eyes
still works. I need to use Jaws more often so I can learn it, but I
just can't bring myself to do so when Window-Eyes works with programs

Re: Jaws and desktop

2017-05-26 Thread net bat via Talk

it depends on what is opened on the screen.
have someone watch while you do it.
try this with the w e control panel or a jaws settings screen opened while wlm
is opened. windows m will minimize the wlm screen but the w e control screen or
jaws settings screen will still be opened. if you use windows d everything will
minimize. both ways will put the screen reader focus on the desktop but windows
m will not minimize the w e control screen or jaws settings screen.

RE: messages keep opening in plain text mode

2017-05-26 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi Mike,

Here are my notes on Outlook:

How to configure Window-Eyes for use with Outlook

It needs to be emphasized that these steps must be done in the ordre listed.

First, install the set files for the most current version of Office or whatever
version of Office you are using.
This is done from the Factory Settings dialog, opened from the File menu within
the Window-Eyes control panel.
Indeed, Office 365 is the most accessible version of Office to use with any
screen reader, and this is because Microsoft is updating it on a monthly basis.
At the time of this writing, Office 2016 is the most current version of Office,
and it is the version included in Office 365.
Next, install the Office Enhance app, and then the Outlook Enhance app, in this
precise order.
Even if the above two apps are already installed, you can reinstall them
without uninstalling them.
Note that a reboot is always required after installing the Outlook Enhance app.
Next, make sure that the Outlook Enhance add-on isn't disabled within Outlook,
as follows:
>From the main Outlook window, press:
alt-f, t, A twice, tab 4 times.
Down arrow to disabled and tab to go and press enter.
Next, arrow through, if something like Outlook Enhance is in the list, press
space on it.
Shift-tab to enable and press enter.
Press Ok or close all dialogs you opened.
Restart outlook.

A point about the display of messages in the message window:
Alt-Shift-V toggles the virtualization of messages, that is, the display of
message content like a web page.
This is the most convenient way to display messages since it allows the opening
of web page links from within messages just as though you had opened them on a
web page.
Message virtualization can also be toggled from the Outlook Enhance app menu
from within the Window-Eyes control panel.

Further, from within the message window, the hot keys Alt-1 through 7 read the
message headers, and, any of these, pressed a second time, will place the
cursor on the corresponding header.
Also, the hot key Control-Alt-A opens the Save Attachments dialog, where you
can choose a location to save any or all the files attached to the message.
Note that if the dialog does not appear when you press this hot key, the dialog
may have opened, but you may need to Alt-tab to it.
Attachments can also be save by choosing the File Attachments option from the
File menu within the message window.
Perhaps the easiest method of handling attachments is to press Alt-7 twice to
focus the list of attachments, and you can tab through the various options for
opening or saving any or all of them.

Regarding the reading of headers or saving attachments, it is possible that
these functions might not be available or perform as expected.
In this case, it may be necessary to repeat the above configuration steps, or
simply restart Outlook, or even reboot the system to reset all of the required
components.
This should get everything up and running properly.

Outlook allows you to configure the display of messages in any folder, and even
to apply such views to other folders.
This is done from the View tab in the main Outlook window.
if you find that your messages aren't displaying properly in the list of
messages in any folder, you can reset the view by pressing the following keys,
one at a time, Alt, V, X.
Here Ends How to configure Window-Eyes for use with Outlook

That's how they do! It's always been that way so why should they adjust
what they do? Their installation rewrites the shortcut even if one
already exists. In my opinion this is just lazy on the JFW's team's
part. How hard would it be for them to check for an existing shortcut
and at least keep the existing one? When you install NVDA there's a
checkbox where you can decide to keep the existing shortcut or have a
new one created. It's not hard for us to reset the hotkey but it's a
little annoying to have to do it when all other screen readers handle
this in a much more convenient way.

I had changed the name of the desktop icon to just say Jaws so when I
did the update a new desktop icon for jaws was created. The old renamed
one was still there and still had the hot key in place. The new icon
added by the update did not have a hot key assigned. So I would say
that the update replaces the existing idesktop icon if it is still named
the default title.

RE: Jaws hot key undefined after update

2017-05-26 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi Steve,

I simply responded to the prompt to update when Jaws launches.

Thanks,

Rod,

Did you use the procedure to update JAWS or did you just run the latest
installation file? I tend to run the latest installation file because I can
download it once and run it on multiple computers without the need to have
each computer download the update. When I do that, I loose the hot key
every time. I am not certain if this happens when I follow the update
prompt or not. Running the latest installation file seems to have some
ability to look at what was installed because I don't have to authorize the
version again, but I loose the hot key.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Hi,

Has anyone had the experience that the hot key we had probably all set up in
the Jaws desktop shortcut is removed after an update?
This happened to mine after the recent update.
It makes sense, of course, since I guess the icon got updated as well.
I'm just wondering if this happened to anyone else.

Thanks,

Press Jaws key+6 to get into settings center, press ctr+shift+d to use the
default configuration. Type the letters l a b into the edit box. Tab over and
press Space on the Key Label result. A dialog will open showing you a list of
all the keys you can change labels for. For example, you can arrow down to Tab
and you’ll hear JAWS say “Tab Tab Speak”. Press Space on it and it will change
to “Mute”. When you’ve made all the changes you want, tab to OK and press
Enter. Next, you can hit alt+f4 to close Settings Center and say “Yes” to the
prompt to save changes.

2017-05-26 Thread Marvin Commerford via Talk
That's how they do! It's always been that way so why should they adjust
what they do? Their installation rewrites the shortcut even if one
already exists. In my opinion this is just lazy on the JFW's team's
part. How hard would it be for them to check for an existing shortcut
and at least keep the existing one? When you install NVDA there's a
checkbox where you can decide to keep the existing shortcut or have a
new one created. It's not hard for us to reset the hotkey but it's a
little annoying to have to do it when all other screen readers handle

RE: Jaws hot key undefined after update

2017-05-26 Thread Steve Jacobson via Talk

Actually, the volume setting is also in the same screen. It is the next
tab after you set the pitch control. Now, for something nice, though,
they did include hot keys for changing the speed. Increase and decrease
for temporary use is alt-page up and alt-page down. To make permanent

Fortunately, my husband revived my Window7 machine and Window-eyes

just can't bring myself to do so when Window-Eyes works with programs
like Vipre and Jaws doesn't. Also, Window-Eyes has a setting which

Re: Jaws hot key undefined after update

2017-05-26 Thread Don H via Talk
I had changed the name of the desktop icon to just say Jaws so when I
did the update a new desktop icon for jaws was created. The old renamed
one was still there and still had the hot key in place. The new icon
added by the update did not have a hot key assigned. So I would say
that the update replaces the existing idesktop icon if it is still named
the default title.

Yes, this can be done. My instructions may not be the best, but I think you
can figure it out since you have already been in the Jaws options and found
the voice settings. From within the voices setting, choose voice
adjustment.
Press alt-v to get to the combo box where you choose which cursor you want
to modify.
you will get to an option where you can down arrow through options for
default cursor, PC cursor, Jaws cursor, etc.
You can not have the option set to default. After choosing the cursor you
want to set, tab until you find the pitch setting. This is the next tab
after
the punctuation setting.
You change it with the arrow keys.
Once you have it set, tab to save as and give it a name, something you will
recognize, like Glen pitch 44 and press enter on OK.
You will be asked if you want to set this for the default. Enter on yes or
OK, I forgot what it is called at this point.
Now, you will have access to that voice whenever you want to use it.

Technically, the shortcut was replaced by a new one which doesn't have the hot

My shortcut stayed on the PC, it was just the hot key that disappeared.

Hi Joseph,

You're brilliant. That worked! I just press CTRL+Home, and then I can read the
message that was not reading on opening it. I can either do read all with
CTRL+SHIFT+R or just arrow line by line down.

I thought I had accidentally discovered this myself when first encountering the
problem and looking for a work around. But it was sometimes working and
sometimes not. However, I have just tested it again and it worked as you said.

Thanks so much as it now shows the Mail program can be used with WE. Sometimes
people say something is not accessible with a certain screen reader when it
actually is.

Hope Sandra sees this message too.

RE: End of Life Message

2017-05-26 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
I figure they’re trying to hit all WE users, just in case they couldn’t contact
some by Email.

I, too, was surprised by an update message, but, then saw why that update was
sent. This, made me a little sad when I read the message. Probably was Doug
or someone else at VFO, who came from GW, originally, who wrote that update.
It would feel like putting another nail in the coffin, for me.

Yesterday, the window eyes thing came on that tells you there are new aps to
download. It surprised me. After I told it to download, I got that
message. So, I guess they sent an ap with that. They really didn't need to
do that! Pam.

How are people getting this end of life message to come up?

RE: WE with Win 10 Mail

2017-05-26 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi Ramona:

I did find a work-around, of sorts. Please try this for me since I’d like to
know if it works for someone else besides me.

What I found is pretty much the same as you already observe. However, here’s
what I did.

When opening the first message, as you noticed, it worked. When opening the
next message, it didn’t seem to read anything. For some reason, if I press
ctrl+end, then ctrl+home, it then read fine.

Again, please try this and let us know if it works.

Subject: WE with Win 10 Mail

Hi,

My Name is Ramona mandy. I am new to this list and this is my first post. So
please excuse me if this topic has already been discussed.

Does anyone have any experience with using WE with the Windows 10 Mail app and
can advise on accessibility or otherwise?

I am running WE 9.5.4.

I find that when I first launch Mail and Enter on the first message I select,
WE will read it fine and I can navigate and hear the text by moving up or down
arrow.

However, if I then close that message with escape or delete it with CTRL+D,
then open another message, if I arrow up or down, it just says blank. WE also
does not read it at all when I open it.

In this case, if I turn off browse mode and tab, I sometimes find a link to
download message and pictures which is odd because I thought the message would
already be downloaded. I enter on this and then sometimes I can launch browse
mode and read the message, but once again, not always.

Sometimes, if the message is presenting as blank, I can turn off browse mode
and will find a link by tabbing to read the message in a web browser which then
works, but I don't want to have to always read my messages by opening them in
IE.

I find the rest of the program is reasonably accessible such as tabbing to
buttons. It is this reading problem that I am interested to hear how others
have found it.

Thanks
Ramona

2017-05-26 Thread Ramona Mandy via Talk
Thanks Sandra,

In fact that was very helpful because it confirms to me that I am not doing
something wrong.

It is a strange glitch.

I am going to see if the MS Accessibility folk have any advice.

I do use an Outlook account for two of my other email accounts and I might
end up using it for my one that I hoped to use Mail for too.

Thanks
Ramona

Hi Ramona,
I ran into the same problem you did. The first message read without a hitch
but that was it. I couldn't get WE to read the next or subsequent messages.
The rest of the program is, as you say, pretty accessible but it's no good
if you can't read messages. I gave it up as a bad job in the end and went
to Outlook 2016.
Sorry not to be more helpful.

Cheers,
Sandra.

RE: WE with Win 10 Mail

2017-05-26 Thread Ramona Mandy via Talk
Hi Ian,

My account in Mail was set up for me by a sighted person. So I do not know
if I would have had access issues doing that or not. However, someone on the
ATUG list who is VI was able to set it up with WE and so I think maybe it
can be done with WE.

I am further down the track than that in that I can do most things, just not
read subsequent to the first message in any session.

There is another on this list with the same issue and so it seems that that
is the breaker to what looked like an accessible program.

I am going to call the MS access helpdesk to see if they can shed any light.

Ta
Ramona

Hi Ramona. I tried the program but couldn't get passed the "Add Account"
button. From there on, nothing spoke using curser keys, or the numeric key
pad so unless there's a trick I don't know, it doesn't seem to work.

I have the latest version of WE.

My priority email program is ThunderBird and that does what I want.

Sorry for the bad news.

Net Bat, I am using W10 Home with all updates.

Alt tab does nothing as regards bringing back the speech when returning
to the Desktop. Maybe I have been spoiled by years of WE because it
always automatically gave focus to the Desktop after leaving a programme.

for windows 7 you can use alt tab to switch from the jaws screen to the
desktop

or find the jaws option to run it from the system tray.
another option in jaws settings is to turn on focus. this will tell you
when jaws has lost focus in your programs.
for me it says lost focus every time i close wlm and i have to alt tab
to bring focus back to the desktop. or mouse click the desktop.

Hi,
Just authorized the latest copy of Jaws and very much a learner.

When exiting a programme, say Thundrbird, or exiting a drive for the
Desktop, ,after pressing alt F4 Jaws goes quiet. The pressing of Windows
d once or twice is required to place focus back on the Desktop.

Is this annoying behaviour normal for Jaws or do I need to change some
setting somewhere? If so, which setting and where?

Thanks
Neville.
