[tw] Re: [TW5] Introducing a simple BarChart plugin

2017-03-16 Thread Jed Carty
I have been looking at how to update this plugin and I posted an
experimental version
here http://ooktech.com/jed/ExampleWikis/BarChart/#Bar%20Chart%20Creator

You can make the charts vertical or horizontal and you can make the
sections into multiple bars instead of just a single bar and I made a tool
that lets you design your chart and outputs the widget code so you don't
have to remember everything. That may be my solution to how complex things
get when you start adding options to something like this.

Hi all

Here’s what I would prefer – something in the direction of:

---
  DON’T PANIC. There is a problem but it’s likely not a disaster.

TO BE SURE it is recommended you create a fresh backup of your TiddliWiki right
now using your file explorer.
AFTER you did the backup, you can try to save this wiki.

AVOID DATA LOSS: close and reopen this wiki now and check the content. If
something is wrong, return to your last backups.

Stay safe,

I'm not sure I understand - is your intention to create a service like more

...and to run it like cousins Simon and Daniel Bard do with TiddlySpot is
run, i.e public, free, reliable etc

That would be incredibly generous. But I must assume I misunderstand
something because that would be quite a moral commitment considering how
people truly rely on TiddlySpot. Of course, your project is interesting

So, if I may, exactly what *is* you intention?

Thanks!

I do think that is something in all this. Perhaps it not so cut and dry?

Personally I am very interested in Danielo's ongoing project of a TW that
BOTH can auto-save into Browser Storage (into an automatically created
local database), rather than using the Download Saver mechanisms. It can
also be synced with a remote database. Once that is done you can use it
from more than one location. Basic info here: https://noteself.github.io/

I haven't had time, nor have I the competence, to thoroughly test it, but I
think it is very suggestive to see something concrete like that actually
seems to work.

Its in some ways, potentially, a demonstration of how the "on-line" and
"off-line" can be crossed. I think its interesting to look at in the
context of Jeremy's comments.

Best wishes
Josiah

[tw] Re: Voicing Futures ...

2017-03-16 Thread A M Alfaro

Arlen,

I'm a part of the minority which cannot use USB sticks at work. Security
recognizes and blocks flash drives. The more restrictive my environment
becomes, the more I dread the day I can't even get TW at work. I tired to
email a copy of my project management wiki to myself at home and it was
blocked based on content and file size. I imagine one day I won't be able
to email myself an empty wiki from home to work, which is what I did to get
it last month. I could get to the website but couldn't download an empty
copy.

---

Andrew,

I think I get the analogy you're trying to make, but I believe the premise
is slightly off because Excel is a complete package, meaning it's designed
from top to bottom for all "parts" to work together. Tiddlywiki and the
browsers are not designed that way. The only way to solve that would be for
Jeremy to repackage the single file application as that "Excel"-type of
program. I don't know anything about the JSON side of TW, so it could be
that it provides this type of solution (?).

Also for clarification, TiddlyFox is just a FireFox addon that smooths the
user's saving experience. It isn't a tool being manipulated by TW which
seems to be how you're describing it. In fact, what you're describing as
the future of TW is already in trouble and continues to be TW's recurring
problem. Browser security continues to evolve in ways that close off the
function TW needs to smoothly save over itself. That elegance is at the
mercy of the browser developers.

I completely get that mine is an unpopular opinion but I'm not seeing any
way around it: Jeremy's fallback measure of using the Save dialog will
become the only available way of saving TW in the future. I don't think of
it as inelegant; I think TW users just aren't used to it and are loathe to
accept it. Like I said before, we got used to a different experience. We
have the expectation of it. Maybe it's time we reset our expectations on
this one thing? Is it truly so disruptive to the user experience? I don't
think so.

>From my point of view, it's actually much easier now that TW "falls back"
to the Save dialog.

Peace,
Anita

I don't think that it is too complex considering that most of the time you
have to be digging around inside tiddlywiki a bit to get to the RSOD, which
means that the target audience will be people who are at least willing to

Re: [tw] TW5 - Another RSOD suggestion

2017-03-16 Thread @TiddlyTweeter
Ciao PMario

Before I reply on your suggested message (I need think about it a little
bit first)... I'd like to make an observation ...

I think one of the reasons its not so easy to get the message exactly right
is awareness that users are likely, unfortunately, NOT routinely
backing-up. So the message of advised steps also has to kinda deal with
that. BUT should it? IF we were SURE they were backing up then the message
could be a lot simpler I think.

BECAUSE I run redundant backup that detects changes in a TW every 30
minutes or so I would rarely follow your suggested steps. I'd just close
(without saving) and re-open & if the problem came back I'd revert to a
previous version.

I suppose what I am saying is *I don't see why TW creators should have to
have the hassle of laying out complex steps because users are lazy about
backup*. In a way I think they should ASSUME people back-up. But also give
alerts, in the "Red Screen", to encourage them to do that if they aren't
already.

Backup is universally understood as a basic principle. Its likely one of
the most straight-forward concepts you encounter in TW. I don't like to see
you developers over-apologise when Users do need to take some ordinary,
understandable, responsibility too.

I hope it is clear what I am saying. That whilst reminders of backups are a
very good idea, especially in "crash" messages, I'd NOT try to address
salvage in every post-crash scenario ultra-carefully. It just gets too
complicated. IF you had decent recent backups already you'd simply bail out.

Best wishes
Josiah

small glitch. To be safe, please close the window this TW is in and
reopen it. NOTA BENE: Please make sure that you always regularly
backup your TiddlyWiki because failures do happen & it would be a
great shame if you lost your work.*A message something like that.

Having the message in Glaring Red may feel like a good idea. I think a
softer colour like Light Pink would be just as good without the extreme
aesthetic alert factor.

Just some thoughts.

As I wrote, that should be possible too. ... But I'm not sure, how you
would want to implement it. .. IMO for a "low latency" system, it's
important, that only the stuff that's really needed is running. ... So the

2017-03-16 Thread Lost Admin
Other than the official TiddlyWiki (empty.html from TiddlyWiki.com) are
there any other current wiki templates that I should think about including?

Is anyone interested in playing beta-tester?

Before I go public, I've got two more items on my must-have list:

1) encrypt the passwords in the password database.

2) re-do the internal structure for storing wikis (I just don't like it as
it sits now).

And on the should-have list:

1) Give people the ability to change their password

2) Give people the ability to delete their account

3) Give people the ability to re-set their wiki (basically delete and
re-sign-up in one shot)

On, and one last question. Does anyone actually care?

Re: [tw] TW5 - Another RSOD suggestion

2017-03-16 Thread tejjyid
That's my experience too. I've never seen it when it wasn't my fault.
That's why I feel the apology is awkward, because mainly it will be the
user at fault. The communication is well-intentioned, but it doesn't match
the pragmatics of the situation. That kind of mismatch is what I was
looking to avoid. But look, I don't want to waste your time on it. As a
final compromise/suggestion, how about "Sorry, but this might be serious.
To protect your data..." But I will absolutely be happy with your final
call. Otherwise this kind of discussion can go on for years!

Thanks for taking the time over this.

[tw] Re: Voicing Futures ...

2017-03-16 Thread tejjyid
I'll try again, but my posts keep getting deleted...if anyone can help me
that it'd be appreciated...

I don't think it's right to characterise the problems as being with the
single file architecture, because I don't really see TW as a single file
architecture, any more than Excel. TW is a program and a data file, as is
Excel. The difference is that the program for TW is called the browser. We
think about the TW program as being that part of the data in the file that
gets executed, but that's really analogous to VBA code.

*Program*   -
File
Excel
   Application functions
   Enables VBA-
user code (VBA, formulas); data
   File IO
Browser
   Enables JS -
application functions (JS, macros, widgets); user code (ditto); data
   ?FIle IO?

The problem occurs because the TW driving program, the browser, is not
longer fit for purpose. If Excel stopped saving spreadsheets, that'd
obviously be a pretty major disaster. TW, though, doesn't control the
browser, so we have to take our lumps when it does stop saving.

I switched to using Firefox for TW (from Chrome) because of the extension
which allowed overwrite saves. The save(n+1) option is rubbish; I mean it's
doable, obviously, but it is not convenient. It's not a user-winning
experience. If that goes, I guess I'll switch to using Tiddlyfox, which
seems to be OK. It's the program TW controls which can run TW and also
save. It's a pity to lose the "elegance" of running with a program that is
already readily available, but in terms of offline user experience ,
downloading a program, installing it and running it is not a big challenge
for most people.

I think the future will be TFox for standalone; browser for online; Node
for the minority; offline browser for the rest, and I don't really see a
problem with that. It's more user-friendly, IMO, than running TW on top of
a database. No matter how hard people work to make the underlying
technology transparent, I think the extra complexity will eventually show
up. I don't think that's the right place to invest the technical talent.

Cheers, Andrew

Hi Matt

In TiddlyWiki, themes determine the layout of the display but the colour scheme
is determined by the palette. They are set independently so that users can mix
and match the layout they want with the colour scheme they want.

In the control panel “Appearance” tab you’ll find a list of available palettes.
“Contrast (Dark)” is a built-in dark theme, but you can adjust things with the
built-in palette editor.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

[tw] [TW5] Hours Filter - as a counterpart to the Days Filter (suggestion)

2017-03-16 Thread The Bo
Hey guys,

I was thinking about a hours filter which is working same like the days
filter to show tiddlers I created or modified the last x hours.
It was quite simple to change some parts of the days core filter. So I want
to share my result:

$:/core/modules/filters/hours.js

/*\
title: $:/core/modules/filters/hours.js
type: application/javascript
module-type: filteroperator

Filter operator that selects tiddlers with a specified date field within a
specified hour interval.

\*/
(function(){

/*jslint node: true, browser: true */
/*global $tw: false */
"use strict";

/*
Export our filter function
*/
exports.hours = function(source,operator,options) {
var results = [],
fieldName = operator.suffix || "modified",
hourInterval = (parseInt(operator.operand,10)||0),
hourIntervalSign = $tw.utils.sign(hourInterval),
targetTimeStamp = (new Date()).setMinutes(0,0,0) +
1000*60*60*hourInterval,
isWithinHours = function(dateField) {
var sign = $tw.utils.sign(targetTimeStamp - (new
Date(dateField)).setMinutes(0,0,0));
return sign === 0 || sign === hourIntervalSign;
};

if(operator.prefix === "!") {
targetTimeStamp = targetTimeStamp - 1000*60*60*hourIntervalSign;
source(function(tiddler,title) {
if(tiddler && tiddler.fields[fieldName]) {

if(!isWithinDays($tw.utils.parseDate(tiddler.fields[fieldName]))) {
results.push(title);
}
}
});
} else {
source(function(tiddler,title) {
if(tiddler && tiddler.fields[fieldName]) {

if(isWithinHours($tw.utils.parseDate(tiddler.fields[fieldName]))) {
results.push(title);
}
}
});
}
return results;
};

})();

type: application/javascript
module-type: filteroperator

Usage:
e.g. [hours[-2]]

Is there a need for this filter? Are there any suggestions?

Regards,
The Bo
