In summary, I have a security mechanism which I've considered offering

key which locks the product to the specific system over a limited or

Re: [U2] History of Prime Information

2013-04-29 Thread Jerry Banker
Prime Information was originally developed by Devcom I'm not sure what the name
was at that time but I do know that Prime Computers bought them out and bought
the rights from Pick to develop independently. Prime became a database
powerhouse with the product at one time encompassing almost 50% of the database
business in the US. From what I heard Vmark was a group of users of Prime
Information that decided to go UNIX so they developed UniVerse borrowing much
of the expertise from Prime to build a product that would ride on UNIX instead
of Primos, Prime's operating system. They even took over some of the offices
that Prime had on Speen Street. When Prime went under, don't ask why, at the
end of the 80's, early 90's, Vmark bought Prime Information.

[U2] UniVerse on a Windows Virtual Server

2012-11-21 Thread Jerry Banker

We have two virtual servers with UniVerse on them, one for testing and another
for development both used just for that purpose and not tuned for production.
We are thinking of going virtual with our production environment. We are using
Windows as the operating system and don't plan on switching.I've been asked to
get opinions from the users group from people that have gone into using
virtualization with their production environment. What are the pro's and
con's?Any suggestions on how to set the systems up?We have less than 75 users
with device licenses using the apps on a regular basis, plus web users. Our
current UV release is 10.3.3 32 bit on Windows 2008 sp2 64 bit, should we
switch to a more current version and/or 64 bit Universe?Any experiences would
be helpful.

I've been looking through the documentation that comes with UniVerse trying to
find a subroutine that can be used in a UniBasic program that will take an XML
document, in any of the many ways of formatting XML, and return the file,

recieve or is there a built in subroutine that will parse any document and give

Strange I was reading this article on sharding
(http://technoroy.blogspot.com/2008/07/shard-database-design.html) and I
starting thinking as I read. We can do this in UniBasic using UniVerse and
distributed files, what's the big deal. Granted I may not be as up on this as
some of the newbees but I have a few years of decyphering technical newspeak
and it looks like some of the things that a shard is, is already being done
in U2. Distributed files, where you can set up tables to be accessed separately
or together, has been around since PI days. Like data, being stored together
with a single read and single write is a mainstay of any of the Pick databases.

restart the spooler again because the option for activating an

There is no function like the T correlative to translate to an indexed
 file
from a dict item, so you will need to do in BASIC as an I-type. The
 command
 is BSCAN, e,g.

BSCAN BVAL,ID.LIST FROM FV,ID USING FIELDNAME ELSE BVAL =

ID.LIST contains an AM delimited list of keys to records in file FV
 than
 match ID in FIELDNAME.
BVAL is the value of the indexed attribute that matches ID. If there
 was no
match, then BVAL will be the next indexed value past ID, so I always
 test if
 BVAL = ID.
FV is the open file variable to the indexed file.
ID is the value you are searching for in the indexed FIELDNAME.
FIELDNAME is the name of the indexed fields in FV (e.g. CREATE.INDEX
 MYFILE
 FIELDNAME).

A BY SEQ clause is optional, SEQ is either A or D for ascending
 or
 descending, (ascending is the default).

 See HELP BASIC BSCAN

I usually loop on BSCAN until BVAL NE ID. I am not sure if that is
 always
 necessary.

I use I-types that incorporate BSCAN to return values from indexed
 files all
 the time. It works great.

RE: [U2] blank lines in code / mixed case

I started to write this many times and each time it went against what my
Mama always said, If you can't say anything nice then don't say
anything at all. Yes, I know that was also said it Bambi but it was
around long before the movie. Mixed case programming is a relatively new
way of programming and if you have had any time in the business you
would realize this. Yes most programmers didn't learn typing because
during the years when we went to school very few straight males took
typing. Personally I think you should be thankful that those bumbling
two finger geeks created the language that puts bread on your table.

Subject: RE: [U2] blank lines in code / mixed case

 Kevin:

I'm sorry to say, on this rare occasion I disagree with your
 assessment.

First, anyone who learned to type has no problem with the [Shift] key
 being used. In
fact, those who've learned to type often type words instead of letters
 so there is
nothing efficient in saving the [Shift] keystroke; to be honest,
it's
 usually a
problem not to include the key as part of the overall typing
framework.
 I often
laugh when I see C code because I know it was designed by geeks who
 couldn't type
and are, ultimately, two finger peckers. :-)

To those who say they don't have time to learn how to type I say they
 have an
obligation to learn to use the tools of their trade. Do accountants
 not know how
to use a 10-Key? Do doctors not know how to use a stethoscope? Do
 carpenters not
know how to use a plane? Of course they know how to use them!

With that said, let's look at some of the major aggravations of this
 case issue.
Most of us, not all but most, have multiple windows open when we work.
 We may have a
web browser open, or an email client, a word processor, a spreadsheet,
 or other
applications. All of these applications, and I mean all of them,
 expect [Caps
Lock] to be off (in fact, so does Unix)! When we move our focus to a
 U2 window we
have to turn that darned function back on. When we go back to one of
 the other
applications we end up typing cAPS lOCK all the time. This is so
 true that even
when we watch demonstrations, where U2 is in the mix, we see the
 demonstrator having
the same problem over, and over, and over (like switching back to U2
 from another
window to enter a TCL command, then backspacing over the typed in
 command to change
it to upper case). For those who spend the majority of their time in
 the U2
environment, [Caps Lock] is probably set to on. However, for most of
 the rest of us
it's a colossal aggravation, over, and over, and over.

U2 (UV much more than UD) has come up with some partial solutions to
 this casing
issue (because they recognize the error of their ways but it's too
much
 trouble to
fix it). UD is tough at ECL because case makes a big difference in an
 ECL verb.
Having an ECL shell processor that can upper-case all commands doesn't
 quite work in
UD when one wants to use a lower case ECL verb. With case
sensitivity,
 it's clear
there is a difference between the variable CUSTOMER.REC and
 Customer.Rec. I'm not at
all convinced those who've thought this through really would create
one
 variable
CUSTOMER.REC and another variable Customer.Rec. Yet, again,
upper-
 casing
forces everyone to work around its serious limitations. The only
 place where I've
found case to be important, other than in MV, is in command line
 options in Unix
(here we run into those two finger geeks again). :-)

Upper case is an anachronism and should be treated as such rather than
 defended. It
is unwieldy for far too many and, in fact, interferes with efficient
 typing at every
turn. Forcing people to use [Caps Lock] in U2 while all other used
 applications
require [Caps Lock] to be off is a egalitarian ruse for autocracy.
:-)

 This is, of course, IMHO...

I am admittedly a dinosaur of the upper-case bent with U2. Before I
 put on
my flame suit, hear me out..

We developers type thousands - possibly even millions - of characters
 of
code per year To press the letter R with caps lock on or off is
 only one
keypress - keeping in mind the state of the cApS LocK. To type READU
 then
is only 5. ReadU however, is 7 - an increase of 40%. Now, assuming
 that a
typical program is 4000 characters, there's a potential of an
 additional
1000+ shift keypresses just to maintain case. Meaningless, you say?
Everything we do takes an investment of time, and even a fraction of a
second can turn into a significant investment when multiplied times
 millions

RE: [U2] blank lines in code / mixed case

2008-03-10 Thread Jerry Banker
If you ever want a scare then go through the programs in the Universe BP
file. Some are upper case program lines with mixed case comments and
prompts, the way I prefer it, some are all lower case, some are mixed
case, and some are a mixture of all types. In the latter it appears that
whomever was programming at the time picked their preferred case. So it
appears not only we mere mortals have a problem deciding what standard
to use.
My problem with mixed case in a program is not necessarily a reading
issue but a search issue. Let's take the example of the variable var,
if you use all caps it is easy to find, search on VAR. You can do the
same thing if you have all lower case but then the programming doesn't
stand out from the comments or the prompts. If you program in mixed
(camel) case then you would have to start looking for VAR, VAr,
VaR, Var, vAR, vAr, vaR, and var, I know that no one would
use a three letter variable in this way but it is possible and this is
just a three letter variable. You can see what happens if you use a
longer variable or command or by throwing in numbers and special
characters. It explodes exponentially.

I was not trying to offend anyone with that remark but back in the day
typing was something that girls took and boys took shop. It was a fact
not an accusation. Although I think it would have been a great asset for
me today at the time it was hard enough trying to get through all of the
social pressures without creating an additional one of my own making.
Social norms change and today both genders do and should learn how to
type because most of the kids will go into office jobs. Back then most
men were likely to end up tightening a nut and bolt.

I was not trying to offend anyone with that remark but back in the day
typing was something that girls took and boys took shop. It was a fact
not an accusation. Although I think it would have been a great asset
 for
me today at the time it was hard enough trying to get through all of
 the
social pressures without creating an additional one of my own making.
Social norms change and today both genders do and should learn how to
type because most of the kids will go into office jobs. Back then most
men were likely to end up tightening a nut and bolt.

All I can say is, you must have a lot of free time. I sometimes have
three or four projects going at the same time while also making bug
fixes, helping users, managing the database, making minor changes to
programs, and helping to train a new programmer. Some of our code is
close to 20 years old. When I find free time to work on an older program
I might get enough time to restructure the goto's out of it and I feel
like I've accomplished something. There are three of us now, at one time

We must remember that programming and computers in general has changed
 much since the beginning.
 How many remember punch cards.

Can programmers today relate to a time when programmers submitted
there

How about a half a day turnaround to see if your program compiled? And
the fun task of reading core dumps.

There are many factors to consider.

 Subject: [U2] Estimating Timelines

Snipped from Louie's contribution on the Include Wierdness

 - I have noticed that some programmers inflate their estimates by
 10
times, just so they will look good finishing early. We have to
 beaccurate, without lying.

Speaking for myself, this is usually necessary because today's
applications are so complex that all the dependencies are impossible
to
 forecast.

It is not a question of lying - it is a question of trying to
 anticipate
 the worst case.
The first estimate you give is the only one that management (your
customers) will ever remember. You can explain the changed
circumstances until you are blue in the face - it makes no difference.
The customer cannot see the issues. You are late in delivering.

A good example just occurred today.

Set up a control flag for particular function.

Easy enough - we already have a screen for these things - just add one
 field
Should be about an hour. Tops. No big deal.

Add the field and test it.
SB+ spits it back at me with a matrix out of range error.

These are linked screens - we are on the fifth screen.
 I smell a big problem.

I create a sixth screen and put the field on that additional screen.
Now I get a different (more informative) message. Too many fields on
 linked screens.

As I suspected - we have hit the limit of this arrangement. We are on
 an
 old version.

Now I have to totally re-design this set of screens.
With Page forward and back keys
Don't forget the Inquiry mode - How do I make those use the same
screen
 defns?
Make sure it functions exactly as it did before - it does not want
to
because the sub-screens are a different herd of cats.

Now, how much time should I have estimated for this task?
 And this is not unusual.

Does anyone out there have any thoughts on THIS issue?
I think it (estimating timelines) is one of the more difficult tasks
we
face. Especially when interfacing to an existing mature application.
Coding is the easy part of this job.

 Cheers

READ F2R FROM F2, KEY THEN...
READ F3R FROM F3, KEY THEN...
 F1R36,X = F2R13 / F3R82 * F1R8 + F3R43

Just understanding the code takes a lot of backwards and forwards
thru
 code.

This wouldn't be so bad if they had at least standardised of F1
always
 being
HPMAST, but they didn't, so the next program does this

OPEN 'HPCONTRACT' TO F1 ELSE STOP
OPEN 'HPTRANS.FILE' TO F2 ELSE STOP
OPEN 'HPMAST.FILE' TO F3 ELSE STOP
READ F1R FROM F1, KEY THEN...
READ F2R FROM F2, KEY THEN...
READ F3R FROM F3, KEY THEN...
 F1R36,X = F2R13 / F3R82 * F1R8 + F3R43

The formula at the bottom looks identical to the formula above but
 it's a
totally different file / field combo. Multiply this by around 1700
 programs
and you begin to get a sense of what I face. If a program hits a file
 or
record error it simply stops with no feedback to the user that the
 update is
complete. Data integrity is an illusion.

The system has been migrated from Pick, but without all the code
being
converted. As a result one has to try compile with a PICK compile,
and
 if
that fails, try a universe style compile. The dictionaries for the
 most part
contain only F1, F2, F3 with the heading correct some of the time,
and
fields in use that do not appear in the dictionaries.

Thus far I have started changing code to always open HPMAST to
 F.HPMAST, and
to always read HPMAST into HPMAST.R. Code takes on a whole new
meaning
 when
you know what file you're working with.

An additional swing is that every summary total is always calculated
-
nothing is stored. This means that every program that ever displays
 ARREARS
for example has the code to calculate arrears in it. That makes 200
 separate
routines with the exact same code in it, just with differing file
 variables
(ie not a simple swap out).

The code needs to be changed, errors need to be trapped, and
 duplicated code
weeded out but the time to rewrite complete code doesn't exist. Using
included code allows me (the only full time programmer) to phase in
 the
 changes as time permits.

The idea is to phase the new code into the system as and when a
 program is
modified. Most programs create qpointers to the various (15)
branches,
 then
open the the qpointed files. The method of doing this varies
 considerably
from program to program, with a bewildering array of possible file
 handles -
my plan is to create ideal code for opening, reading, writing
files,
 stored in SNIPPETS.

I have started converting the opens to a standard, eg F.HPMAST, and
 read a
standard record, eg HPMAST.R. Keys variables are set to a standard to
 allow
the use of INCLUDES. Standardises READ includes, WRITE includes all
 preset
 with error trapping code.

The theory behind the includes thing is that one can still produce a
 full
listing of the code to debug if required. One can change just a read
 and
write in a program without having to get involved in other files in
 the
routine (really messy but allows the process to start and proceed on
a
 very
 part time basis).

Recompiling everything is far less tiring than trying to concentrate
 and not
leave out code whilst being moved from fire to fire, besides which
 having it
all in SNIPPETS allows me to get it right in one place and know that
correction is being filtered into the whole system by a simple
 recompile.

 Adrian Womack wrote:

Does anyone else think it's bad practice to have code in INCLUDES?
Surely it would be much better to have the INITIATE.FEEDBACK
GIVE.FEEDBACK routines written as subroutines, and then simply call
 them
 from the appropriate spots.

In cases such as this, it is a good idea to divide the process into
 steps,
and see which step has the problem. For instance, configure your
 printer
driver to print to file, then run the program, then examine the file
produced to see it it contains what you expect it to contain. Then
send
 it
 to the printer.

Because I have an HP Color LaserJet 4550 PCL printer (and I'm a nice
 guy),
I created a file that had those escape sequences (not using Pick, just
 a
low-level editor), and ran it out to my printer. It printed each word
 in
the proper color. So that says the code sequence is right, for an
 actual
 PCL printer.

Email me privately if you'd like my test file.

Also, it's possible that there is a problem in using the Generic
 driver.
 Try a different driver.

But consider this: you can spend a LOT of time hand-writing PCL
 sequences.
If you value your time, you might use a tool to make this easier. With
 our
Print Wizard product, you could generate the following print data:

 =
 PWMLBODYPRE
 FONT color=redRed
 FONT color=blueBlue
 FONT color=blackBlack
 =

...and pass it to Print Wizard, which will render the intended output
 on
ANY printer with a proper Windows driver.

If you think this looks like HTML, that is intentional. We mimic HTML
 in
many ways, but also include tags for barcodes, paper sizes,
 orientation,
 overlays, etc.

 Hey,

 UV 10.2 / PIOPEN Flavor

I'm trying to resolve an erratic issue with totaling on some reports,
where it runs the column out to 9 decimals.

It only happens when we apply the 'MD2' conversion with an OCONV,
rather than using the Conv field in the DICT item.
And, it does not happen consistently.

Why, then, do it this way? Because we must decide whether to present a
foreign currency amount, or a USD amount.
We store the foreign currency amount in its output format, but USD in
 its internal format.
Our accountants want the AR Amount to appear in the same column,
 regardless of currency code.

 Consider the DICTs:

This is what formerly appeared on reports, before handling other
 currencies:

Top of D10 in DICT CRJ, 6 lines, 51 characters.
 001: D ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE AMOUNT
 002: 10
 003: MD2
 004: A/R-TOTAL
 005: 10R
 006: S
 Bottom.

For diagnostic purposes only, to demonstrate there is no embedded
 decimal in the data:

Top of D10.RAW in DICT CRJ, 6 lines, 52 characters.
 001: D AR AMT WITH NO (02/04/08,RBH)
 002: 10
 003:
 004: AR-TOT RAW
 005: 10R
 006: S
 Bottom.

A simple form of the actual OCONV, without the conditional IF:

Top of D10.OCONV in DICT CRJ, 20 lines, 542 characters.
 001: I AR AMT - Oconv'd (2/5/8, rbh)
 002: OCONV(D10,MD2)
 003:
 004: AR-TOT OCONV
 005: 16R
 006: S

What is used now in the report; We present field 10 if USD, or field
26
 (already converted) otherwise:

Top of AR.TOT.USD.FRGN in DICT CRJ, 20 lines, 1,407 characters.
 001: I ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE AMOUNT USD / FGRN (JMK, 15 MAR 2007)
 002: IF D22 = USD OR D22 = THEN OCONV(D10,MD2) ELSE D26
 003:
 004: A/R-TOTAL
 005: 10R
 006: S

Top of D26 in DICT CRJ, 6 lines, 57 characters.

RE: [U2] copying files in Unix from one IBM AIX computer to another IBM AIX computer

2008-02-04 Thread Jerry Banker
I tried suspend the other day and was surprised to find that if you
suspended the database while a lock was present it preserved the lock
making it stop a copy waiting for the lock to be released. This is on UV
10.1.12. So I'm not surprised that it could cause other problems. You
need to get everyone to stop updating and releasing all locks before
setting the suspend.

I'm trying to copy UniVerse files (all types) from one computer to
 another
using an NFS mount and the Unix cp command, but am getting damaged
 files
because they are in use. They are large files, between 4 and 22 gigs,
 some
 hashed, some dynamic, some directories.

I tried to suspend UniVerse and then copy one file or directory, then
 unsuspend, but that hasn't helped.

I am wondering if I need to pause a minute or so between the suspend
 (uv
-admin -L) and the copy? In other words, is suspend immediate, or
does
 it
finish all the current writes and then pause?

RE: [U2] [uvrestore] - help with a couple errors..

2008-01-30 Thread Jerry Banker
The uvrestore uses the pathname in the backup when it tries to restore
the backup so what you are probably seeing are the errors produced when
it can't find the directory on the new system and you don't have full
access to create them. It would be better, if you are changing the
location, to save the file with a path that is relative to where you are
and not from the root (on Unix it would be ./chris).

we

ADDS Viewpoint A2 Enhanced emulation that AccuTerm does. Now, I have
(without involving screen) proxied telnet sessions by setting the TERM

worked

 in AccuTerm.

This will be an interesting project, indeed. Thanks for your help. I

In the unix profile for the user we check to see if there is any
 active
screen session by doing a screen -ls - this will only display
 sessions for
that user. If there is a disconnected session the profile attaches
to
 that
session otherwise it creates a new one.

It works well - even repaints the window when the user reattaches.
However, note that the only terminal emulation it supports is vt100.
 You
may also need to change the default command escape sequence (ctrl-a
 takes

 damage),
but all of that is pretty well documented in the man pages.

   Hi all,

Back in the mvBASE days, a telnet disconnect would allow an
 interactive
user's activities to continue. UV is smarter than this,
however,
 and
  is
quick to get rid of disconnected users. At least, it does not
 behave in
  the
   same way.

What I would like to know is if there are facilities within UV to
 allow
  this
   sort of behavior.

One scenario I dreamed up involved using the UNIX utility screen
 (which
  has
been ported to Windows with cygwin). The issue would be tying
 screen
sessions to existing telnet sessions and incorporating security so
 that
  we
do not have people resuming one another's screen sessions. Has
 anyone
attempted this? Or is there a third party tool to do this?

The key thing is: as much transparency to the end user as
possible.
 The
tools we have available on the client side are AccuTerm 2K2; and
UV
  (running
on various flavors of Windows 2000-2003) on our servers. If
screen
 is a
potential solution, the cygwin layer could be installed.

The reason I ask is because disconnects - which we have some
 control
  over;
but often is left to the whims of customer infrastructure, can
 cause
  garbed
up transactions; which gives us untold headaches.

Ideas, anyone? We wouldn't go back to mvBASE if our lives
depended
 on
  it;
but we do need to solve the disconnect issues for our customers
who
  refuse
to pay for high quality data connections to our servers and the
  associated
   equipment.

   Thanks much,

RE: [U2] UV SEARCH Bug?

2008-01-17 Thread Jerry Banker
My guess would be that when a search is performed on a type 1 file,
without a select list, it reads the file names and some may have been
split by the name truncation used with type 1 files. With an active
select list the search routine probably uses the select list which has
the full concatenated name. A type 19 file wouldn't have the same
problem because it does not split the long names.

I am working on a UV 10.2 system and the BP file is a Type 1. SEARCH
BP and then entering a string that is known to be in the records
 returns erroneous results. For example:

  SEARCH BP
 STRING: KK
 STRING: cr

 5 record(s) selected to SELECT list #0.

 CLEARSELECT
 SELECT list number 0 cleared.

 SELECT BP

  SEARCH BP
 STRING: KK
 STRING: cr

 48 record(s) selected to SELECT list #0.

Why would the SEARCH with no active list return 5 but the SEARCH with
the active list returned 48 items? Copying the records to a type 19
file, the SEARCH works fine on the type 19 file. It only seems to be
with the type 1. Any clues?

I would think that honoring a reasonable order of operations when
parsing would resolve this. The extraction operator should
 certainly
  be
   higher priority than comparison.

In fact, it works correctly in a BASIC program (UV 10.1.8). I
  compiled
   and ran the following:

   0001: XX=
   0002: XX1=5
   0003: XX2=X
0004: IF XX1=5 THEN CRT YES ELSE CRT NO

It returned YES as expected. If it suffered from the same
  affliction,
it should have returned NO as (XX1) is not = 5.

Therefore, it would seem that the parser for the I-Types is, as
originally suggested, broken, or, more specifically, is not
 consistent
   with the BASIC compiler.

I confess, however, that I have not verified the alleged I-type
  behavior
   on my system.

Chuck,
Thanks for verifying it. Also thanks for letting me know about the DLIST
command I was wondering if there was a way to look at an I-descriptor.

Subject: Re: [U2] Universe 10.1 Itype possible parsing problem

I would think that honoring a reasonable order of operations when
parsing would resolve this. The extraction operator should certainly
be
 higher priority than comparison.

In fact, it works correctly in a BASIC program (UV 10.1.8). I
compiled
 and ran the following:

 0001: XX=
 0002: XX1=5
 0003: XX2=X
0004: IF XX1=5 THEN CRT YES ELSE CRT NO

It returned YES as expected. If it suffered from the same
affliction,
it should have returned NO as (XX1) is not = 5.

Therefore, it would seem that the parser for the I-Types is, as
originally suggested, broken, or, more specifically, is not consistent
 with the BASIC compiler.

I confess, however, that I have not verified the alleged I-type
behavior
 on my system.

RE: [U2] cron/printer memory segment removed message

2008-01-07 Thread Jerry Banker
Doug,
What it is doing is a good thing and is alerting you to a problem you
are obviously having. It's cleaning up the memory segment that was left
by an aborted process. If you continue to get these messages on a
regular basis then you should look into what is running that is aborting
prematurely, possibly running out of disk or memory.

[U2] list vs. email

2008-01-02 Thread Jerry Banker
Maybe you didn't get my last message. It doesn't matter around here if a
forum is better or not, the PHB's will not allow the users to surf the
net even to get email. At one time I was registered on this list as my
personal hotmail account but I had to stop using it because they blocked
access to hotmail. I also have accounts at yahoo and my space but those
are or were blocked so I have to use my business email account to keep
from having it blocked. The only other way would be to only look at the
questions and responses from home afterhours; in that case I would be an
observer and not a participant. Personally I like to think on occasion I
have helped someone on this list instead of just gathering the knowledge
of these fine people without giving anything back.

email ?? -
except that the date/time order is always correct and it does not clog
your mail, and
you get dozens of forum style benefits which of course you do not have
to take as it
then implies spending time on that darn web thing ? - Infact it takes
me longer with
the email list as I have to do my own housekeeping and setup my mail
client to place
all the mails in a separate folder and then go through and delete the
emails etc. On a
forum I just go to it, look at what has changed since I last logged in
and come away
 again all happy and relaxed.

The reason why we all use the list is because everyone is on here, I
use the forum as
well but no one is on there so it is pointless. The point is if we all
used a forum (the
existing one or a new one) we would get certain things that people
complain about
fixed like the time lag - which gets me on virtually every post.

There are forums on the u2ug website if you want to use them. If you
changed this list into a forum that would be just one more site my
employer would ban us from so you would loose several people from here.
We're not allowed to surf the net all day at work. Email they won't stop

I could sign up from home but then you would only hear from me after

Part of the volume are the excessive answers. On the D3 forum

 I guess you're talking about U2 Internals type knowledge - what's
hidden
under the covers, behind those fancy GUI interfaces? The kinda stuff
you
can automate and interface your application to make it 'smart' -
especially for monitoring or reporting-type stuff?

Just ask and someone will tell you what you need to know...lots of
knowledge here. I'm sure someone will recommend the UniVerse Internals
 class from IBM. :)

I downloaded the UniVerse Online Library, I have been going through it
but what's unsettling is that almost all the admin docs refer to
administering universe with some windows GUI tool (uniadmin) what I
cannot seem to find are any references to administering universe
WITHOUT
uniadmin, surely there are people administering universe (on unix
 systems) without uniadmin

I was hoping to find a doc that detailed things that Phil pointed out
,
but so far all I can find are ways to administer universe using
uniadmin

  I guess you're talking about U2 Internals type knowledge - what's
 hidden
under the covers, behind those fancy GUI interfaces? The kinda stuff
 you
can automate and interface your application to make it 'smart' -
especially for monitoring or reporting-type stuff?

Just ask and someone will tell you what you need to know...lots of
knowledge here. I'm sure someone will recommend the UniVerse
Internals
  class from IBM. :)

  On a slightly different subject

I downloaded the UniVerse Online Library, I have been going through
it
but what's unsettling is that almost all the admin docs refer to
administering universe with some windows GUI tool (uniadmin) what I
cannot seem to find are any references to administering universe
 WITHOUT
uniadmin, surely there are people administering universe (on unix
  systems) without uniadmin

I was hoping to find a doc that detailed things that Phil pointed
out
 ,
but so far all I can find are ways to administer universe using
 uniadmin

Unauthorized access to the tmp directory would be my first guess. The

Subject: [U2] [UV] server-side ODBC question

We're evaluating phone systems and need to access our UV customer data
for call routing. One of the systems (Vertical Televantage) can only
communicate with other databases via ODBC. In this scenario, UV would
need to be the ODBC server and Televantage the client. Caller ID
would
be passed to UV, and it would return back whatever customer data we
might want to use to route to the appropriate call center agent.

Back around '03 I explored something similar with our SQL Server based
CRM application and ended up making UV the ODBC client instead. Seems
like I couldn't find a way to go the other direction except via a
desktop VB app - not in the background as a service. I did
successfully
connected to UV as an ODBC server from Excel some years back, but
again,
that was via the desktop. I also remember setting up a separate
SQL-ized UV account and Q-pointers back to my Pick flavor account's
data
to make that work. That was on a different platform and version of
UV,
 though.

Has anyone done something similar using ODBC and UV as the ODBC
server?
Does what I remember about the process still hold true, or am I
 completely off base?

 Thanks,
 John

Today I came across an error I've never had before. While updating a
field on all of the records of a file (approximately 400,000) I
received
the error below and the program halted in the debugger. I wasn't
running
the program in the debugger. This is happening on our test system
that's
running Red Hat Linux AS 3 and UniVerse 10.2.4. The program I am
running
is a short program that reads each record, it gets from a select list,
and substitutes the value in a field with another value then writes
the
record back out. No big whoop. It runs without any errors on our live
system running the same Linux version but on 10.1.12 of UniVerse. The
config on both systems is set up the same, or at least the same config
directives that are on both systems. The test version is a 5 user
workgroup version and the live system is a 117 user enterprise
version,
if that makes a difference. This has happened more than once on more
than one file. The first time I was able to do a 'C' when the debugger
prompt showed up but the second time it quit the session before I
could
 continue it.

On the UniVerse system the SYS.CTL and LOCK.FILE do not exist are they
in Unidata? We use a program that was built by Charlie Noah that uses a
file that contains tables that equate system and inode numbers to file
names. You probably know him from the jbase lists. I would rather he
send it than myself because mine has been modified over the years to
reflect the systems that we have been on.

a Universe Administrator to run this command, and be in the home

Maybe a signature block is all that is necessary.

What brilliant marketing there. I'm truly in awe! grin

Seriously though of course, you're right. It is a difficult line...

For example, someone may ask 'I need to do [blah]'.
I may respond, 'Well, there is a free utility you can download from my
 website that does [blah]'.

Now if the utility is free, and I'm answering a question, and I'm not
looking to profit, I'm not marketing.
But visiting the website necessarily means being confronted by other
stuff
 that isn't free.
And what about those who don't want to spend any money, don't want to
see
any ads, but do want free stuff?
(Hey now, THAT sounds like the MV community...)

So I would put my 2c on - posts that are primarily intended to be
adverts
for products should be so marked. Where they are primarily intended to
offer
assistance - like Tony's in this case - we should leave it up to the
conscience of the poster. After all, having [AD] is not a slur - some
people
might even *miss* the advert otherwise...

Tony,
It does make it rather difficult when perhaps the fix to a person's
problem does lie in a product that just happens to be sold by the
answerer. I, personally, liked your little demo and showed it to a few
people out here. Was it an ad? That's questionable because it does
contain advertising material but also some good instruction.
I know when someone sends a blatant ad or not so I can delete it if I
wish. However, sometimes I find a little nugget of information I was
looking for even in the ads.
I expect them on a list like this where you have a variety of users that
also build products for sale.

 Standards vs Styles.

I think Standards are top-down delivered entities in the language from
the
database providers, ie IBM, Raining Data etc. It's the syntax of
commands.

Styles are the localized adaptations of the commands, combined for a
consistency. They should not extend beyond the horizon of the programs
that
 the 'stylists' have control over.

Thus, we can share 'styles' and even vote on them. But we all can
choose to
pick and choose which ones we feel are better suited for use within
our own
 horizons.

IBM and RD give us programmers the same box of crayons respectively.
It's up
to us to draw with them.

  Colin,
  excuse my top-posting - I'm using Outlook.

Lol. Well it was supposed to be rhetorical and I wasn't expecting a
response but since you have; may I cast an opinion that boiling down
a
definition of good code to being efficient and maintainable and
calling it a standard is an oversimplification and well, plain
  dangerous.

Of course code should try to exhibit both qualities but, as you
point
out, they're value calls and aren't measurable by themselves.
Standards
should always be concrete. Possibly like: Always use a matching
'END'
clause after an 'IF/THEN' construct regardless of the number of
  statements (eg no single-line IF/THEN conditionals). It's a
concrete
rule and it can be justified because it makes code 'look' consistent
and
that's something which helps errors to stand out. It's also no less
efficient at runtime to use IF/THEN/END than a single line IF/THEN
for a
condition with only one statement to be performed. (Whether a shop
would
actually choose that as a real standard is not the point in this
  example).

Among other qualities of 'good' code, I would say - Does it also
perform
its function? Obvious to say but does code always handle potential
errors? something which I see very little of in certain areas of
standard pick code. This can make code quite convoluted... using
  READU/LOCKED/ON ERROR/ELSE, BEGIN/END TRANSACTION etc. Possibly
overengineered, inefficient, even ugly. But is a program performing
its
function if say, an update gets a ledger out of balance because it
doesn't handle a lock, or an out of sync update anomaly correctly.
There
is the real risk of costly repercussions to the business. I'm sure
everyone has seen examples of programs that only blind luck keeps
  running in production.

On the no need to look in a manual therefore it must be
maintainable
mantra. A hypothetical if you will: You're in a U2 only shop working
on
a testing the values of a dynamic array variable. Would you a) use a
DCOUNT(), FOR/NEXT construct and call IF/THEN multiple times or b)
use a
single IFS() vector function? (leaving aside REMOVE() for the
moment)
can you tell me which construct you'd use measured against
efficient
  and maintainable?

I'd look at it in light of the efficient and maintainable
standard
and say: The single IFS() function is an order of magnitude simpler
and
quanta more efficient than the DCOUNT/FOR/IF/THEN/NEXT. In my mind
something which is a simple, single statement is more maintainable
than
a multi line/multi statement construct. So for my money, it's a lay
down misere I'd use the IFS().

However, IFS() isn't used very often in code I've seen. Do you still
give in to your standard and use the IFS()? You could make an
assumption
about the maintenance programmer coming after you. Will they look at
IFS(), suddenly go very pale, panic, run screaming out of the room
crying 'heresy' and never code again? Or do you give them a smidgeon
of
credit, that though they have never seen IFS() before, they can open
one
of the dusty, paper manuals that's been propping up a shelf for the
past
20 years and read the explanation of IFS() and work it out (Of
course,
they could then refactor it back to a FOR/IF/THEN/NEXT construct
because
they're being paid by the hour).

It's a curly path and I reckon that unless you have concrete
statement
which says - never use or always use vector functions - it's a
  guideline not a standard.

  Cheers,
  Stuart

 Description:
UniVerse error: Unable to bind socket to telnet port 23. It may be

Running an open ports utility I see nothing bound to port 23. The

 Has anyone any suggestions?

 Thanks.

We recently resolved this error for a TEXMUG member - in this case it
was some Verizon wireless software that had a ghost bind on port 23.
It
didn't show as bound anywhere but when that software was un-installed
 telnet to UV began working.

I use the exact same email group software (majordomo 1.94.5) on my

groups.
 Our
groups never see the delays the members of this group see, so with
 all
 due
respect, there's something different happening that's causing the
 lags. We
often see as many as 200 emails a second going out of our server,
 which is
an 800mghz PIII with 120GB disk, no mirroring (I know, bad idea)
and
running fedora core 4 (old...). Our group members get their emails
 back
within seconds, literally. I send an email to this group, and it
 sometimes
takes an hour or so before I see it come back to me. I send an
email
 to
one of my groups at home, and I get it back within seconds.

Now then, with that said, I've also added bulk_mailer to my email
 group
server so maybe that speeds things up a great deal. I don't know. I
 did it
so I would quit getting the annoying 'too many email connections

 your

 netzero,

Unless you are running RFS, no, there are not any. However if you are
they should be on a separate mount. Some may think you need them but
from my experience the database is so robust it has never been
necessary. Of course I've never run the database on MS.

We've been having performance problems as of late which have been

to disk IO. When I was talking with our hardware vendor, he had one
of his

Sun tech: Because of the inherent difference of random and sequential
you want
to ensure your archive/redo logs are on a different mount then your
database
 files.

Me: Oh - we're not on Oracle.

Sun tech: Whatever the database, you've got archive/redo logs.

If we're not using RFS, can someone confirm that Unidata really
doesn't have
archive/redo logs - or am I just clueless. I've been wrong before...

I felt the same way with that part of the test. I have never seen a need
for some of the conversion codes described because there is usually
something less obscure and more descriptive (English like) that can be
used. Now for some programmers the formats and conversions in the test
may be used but I have worked for companies in manufacturing, education,
banking, and accounting and some of the conversions in the test I would
never and have never used.

I attended the one in Denver and there was no signup for any of the
classes just go where your interests lie. Unless the rooms are really
small, or the session is of great interest, I doubt if you will have
trouble getting to go to any of the classes. Some of the classes of
greater interest are duplicated so if you want to go to more than one
class at a particular time check the schedule, there may be one of the
classes repeated later in the week. Also don't forget to take advantage
of the certification tests.

[U2] Putting Universe on a SAN

2007-11-09 Thread Jerry Banker
I know I saw some information on this list about not putting Universe on
a SAN. Does anyone have that information readily available? Does anyone
know if the problems they were having were fixed or could be fixed? We
are thinking of putting our Universe data accounts, not the runtime, on
a SAN and using replication to another SAN off site. There will be other
databases on the SAN, FoxPro and SQL Server, Will this cause a problem?
Are any of you doing this? What kind of results are you getting? UV is
on Red Hat the others are on Windows will that be a problem?

Subject: Re: [U2] Putting Universe on a SAN

re SAN's and Universe:

DELETE.FILE and RESIZE.FILE will not work on dynamic files that are
NFS mounted. (Universe keeps the DATA.30 file open while trying to
delete the enclosing directory. This will fail on an nfs mounted
directory.) Override the VOC entry with your own version.

Do not access a snapshot of a file from the same mount as the
original. At least on NetApps, the inode of the snapshot will be
the same as the inode of the original. Universe will confuse the data.

Besides the usual caveats about making sure that a single machine
controls locks for any given file, it is also worthwhile to keep the
NFS under a set folders(4-6 or so) and then give each of these
folders its own mount point on the host machine. Effectively creating
multiple devices under UV.

Of course: do not try this without a good UPS. Most SAN's have one
built in too.

Corruption of a group is still possible, but our experience has been
good.

My advice would be to replicate snapshots rather than live data
(Unless you are using Uv Replication). With snapshots, you can
temporarily suspend IO, take a snapshot, and continue.

If you are doing live replication at the SAN level, then a major
problem (an errant DELETE.FILE, for instance) will be replicated on
your backup SAN. Also, suspending IO will avoid catching files in
transitional states.

Good Luck!

Bill,
So what you are saying is that it is bad usage of the equate statement
even though it can be done. I agree and the '=' is used more often for
this type of equation. However, this program was created 15 years ago
(long before I started here) and had been working fine until the code
was changed with the variable being inserted instead of the raw
character causing us to wonder about why. The program is back to the way
it was and is working fine. We just thought we could get an explanation
from someone on the list as to why it made a difference and maybe let
some of you all out there know to watch out for these little quirks of
the language.

Jerry:

I hate to mention the obvious, but one should not equate anything unless
they intend
both sides of the equate to change when either variable changes. For
instance,

DIM MYREC(30)
EQUATE MYREC.DATE TO MYREC(1)
EQUATE MYREC.NAME TO MYREC(2)
--etc--

Thus, whenever MYREC changes, due to a new record read, so does
MYREC.DATE, etc.
Alternatively, you simply have to alter MYREC.DATE to make sure the
MYREC record has
been changed too. To fix the problems you've encountered try:

VALID.CC.TYPES = 'A':@VM:'B':@VM:'D':@VM:'M':@VM:'S':@VM:'V'
VALID.CC.NAMES = 'American Express':@VM:'Carte Blanche':@VM:'Diners

One of the rules for UniVerse to use an index is that the restriction
occurs in the first WITH phrase. The reasoning is that the majority of
records to be excluded will have been excluded by the first WITH clause,
and that therefore the second WITH clause need only examine the record
selected by the first WITH clause.

I created a pre-store, a few years back, that does something similar
thing in the regular editor. I think we were still on UV 7.4 at the
time.
ED ED FIB
6 lines long.

0003: SAVE
0004: XEQ DECATALOG @FILE @ID
0005: XEQ BASIC @FILE @ID
0006: XEQ CATALOG @FILE @ID
Bottom at line 6.

So when in the regular editor all you have to do is type in: .X FIB
Which is a few more key strokes but less than all of the commands.
I didn't want to do the run because most of the development at the time
was done on a live system. But you could add: XEQ @FILE @ID or XEQ @ID
after the last line and save it as FIBR to do as you are doing.

Once you've executed a format command in your logon session, you simply
type 'FOR' at any time the rest of the day, in any edit session, to
format with the same parameters.

FOR -I3 -M3 [Indention of 3, margin of 3]

BTW, If you're chasing a pesky bug that's hidden in a 14 tier nested
LOOP,IF,CASE,Whatever then use this:
'FOR -TRACE' it will put pipes in for you where we used to draw lines
with our ruler to trace the logical flow.

Then when your done and want to compile:

'FIBR' will file it, compile it, and run it [don't get to habitual with
the 'R' if your in a sub].

The AE invoked compiler removes the old source when it starts, that way
if the compile produces no object, it doesn't run the old object code.
At least this is the behavior on UV 10 or higher.

But I just found out that if any Employee is 'working' in New York, you
have
to have a New York Workers Comp policy.

This is a new ruling, and I just called Albany compliance (866-298-7830)
to
find out if attending a conference 'counts' as employment
duties/working.
And they said yes.

So - I for one will not be able to be attending since I'm not going to
add
New York Workers Comp to attend a conference!

And I thought it should be 'known' that if you are attending as an
'employee' or sending an 'employee', you may want to find out if you
need to
have a New York Workers Comp policy in place.

Hope I can make the California show now!!

Brian,
1. I checked the spooler this morning and one of the spooler queues was
locked up with one of those child process errors but I don't know when
that happened. I stopped and started the spooler and it cleared the
error to it. I don't know what that could possibly have to do with the
other problem though.

2. One of the first things I checked when the limit error occurred was
the lock table and it only had one lock set.

I had a wonderful day off. I spent the morning with my youngest
Granddaughter at her pre-school. I read a book to the class and got to
eat with them and play games.

1. Did you check in the uv spool directory to see whether UV was
creating a spool file for some unknown reason (I know your program
doesn't but that fits with the message).

2. If not, could this just be reporting the wrong error message? Is
there, for example, any chance that your program is failing to release a
lock (hey, we've all been there) and that the lock table is filling up?

the error below and the program halted in the debugger. I wasn't running
the program in the debugger. This is happening on our test system that's
running Red Hat Linux AS 3 and UniVerse 10.2.4. The program I am running
is a short program that reads each record, it gets from a select list,
and substitutes the value in a field with another value then writes the
record back out. No big whoop. It runs without any errors on our live
system running the same Linux version but on 10.1.12 of UniVerse. The
config on both systems is set up the same, or at least the same config
directives that are on both systems. The test version is a 5 user
workgroup version and the live system is a 117 user enterprise version,
if that makes a difference. This has happened more than once on more
than one file. The first time I was able to do a 'C' when the debugger
prompt showed up but the second time it quit the session before I could
continue it.

Subject: [U2] Unidata and Win2k3

Good Afternoon,

We are presently in the process of trying to evaluate whether or not it
would
be in our best interests to locate a portion of our software
infrastructure on
a separate server and I wondered if anyone on this listserv has ever
done
anything similar. We are preparing to move to our vendors newest
software
version - Release 18 - and are concerned that the potential load on our
existing server might be problematic. Our existing production server is
also
going to be Release 18's new home. We're creating the new environment
and
maintaining the existing production environment, at the same time...on
the
same box.

Initially, we had the option of moving our present Release 17
environment to
either a combined (both app and database on the same server) or
distributed
(not supported after 8/8/2007) configuration. From the beginning, we
planned
to be a combined environment. As other users have gone LIVE with a
combined
environment, we've started to notice that some (a few) were having load
issues. This is a condition we **really** want to avoid. After we
created a
test environment, we decided to pound on it to see what kind of results
we
would get. Unfortunately, a few times we bought the server to a virtual
standstill (this was done during the summer so our normal load was
rather
light). Through discussions with the vendor, a recommendation started to
evolve where the portion of the infrastructure that is used to handle
communications with the database, be moved to a separate server. This
communications server would be hard wired (IP to IP) to our
database/app
server and would handle all traffic between the app/web and the
database. The
thinking is that by off-loading the overhead associated with the app/web
accessing the database onto a separate box, our performance will
improve.
We've created a test communications server and are in the process of
setting
it up on our network. After further discussions today with the vendor,
we're
still not sure what type of results to expect. But mention was made that
Unidata is resource hungry (especially on Windows), and would probably
benefit
from this off-loading.

I have found over my many years in IT that, although I may think the
issue I
am facing is completely unique, this is rarely the case. Has anyone on
the
listserv ever had to off-load an aspect of their infrastructure onto a
separate server in order to accommodate any resource issues between
their
app/web and Unidata (on Windows)? Even if you've not had to do this, are
there
any recommendations in light of the scenario I've painted above?

Thanks in advance,
Rob Smith

He has un-installed and re-installed PE-UV 10.2 with same results:

UniVerse will start when machine boots, but not telnet. When you
attempt to start manually, you get Telnet error 1067.

We looked in system.Ini to see if anything is actually bound to port
23
 - nothing appears to be.
He also ran TCPview to see if anything is listening on port 23 -
 nothing.

We thought of changing the telnet port from 23 to something else, but
when we try to start UniAdmin we get an RPC error.

He checked the windows event log and it records the UV telnet service
not starting with an error WSA Error 10038.

These folks are extremely happy with UniVerse and the application that
 is helping grow their business.
PE offers the best option for their getting more familiar with UV and
 speeding future development.
 Please help.

The right answer will make you guest of honor at the next TEXMUG
meeting
 Nov 1 (free meal!)[travel not included ;-) ]

 Sincere thanks,
 -Baker

Larry:

Can I get authorization to attend this meeting? The afternoon session
is at 3pm, so I would need to leave about noon driving to get there on
time.

Session cost is $35, plus mileage of course. I could take care of my
dinner if needed.

Speaking of User Groups...

If you're in the Northwest, you definitely want to attend the next SAPUG
- Seattle Area Pick User Group meeting next Thursday September 20th.
We're going to hear details about the most ambitious UV project I know
of from Steve Ritchie of Market America:

Join Steve Ritchie, VP of R/D and founding member of Market America to
hear about how Universe is being in numerous unique ways to run their
company as well as their growth financially and the steady buildup of
their IT department. Steve will talk about challenges with rolling out a
truly massive UniVerse project and about how the power of UniVerse has
helped propel Market America to a billion dollar company in 5 countries.

This is the project that elicited gasps at the U2UG Meeting at last
year's Cincinnati Spectrum show.

Our afternoon session will feature a technology preview from MITS
looking at some of the technology underlying the advanced features in
the next releases of MITS Discover and MITS Report. Special thanks to
MITS for making their expertise available and underwriting this meeting.

For details, see http://www.sapug.org and make sure to RSVP soon.

Thanks, Ross

What types of problems did you encounter that you had to send them code?

We use ES Oracle ODBC driver. We've been using it for almost a year
with UniData 6.1 on 64-bit HP-UX 11.11. Before that, we were using Data
Direct sequelink.

I like ES because
* Cheaper than SequeLink
* Easy to install.
* and ES Support is very responsible.

ES knows about U2. You can even find BCI installation document on their
site. However, when ES asks you to send an example code for debugging,
you may need to write it in C, unless you give ES a right to access your
UniVerse machine.

We had been trying for about a week to get DataDirect (a trial version)
to work with UniVerse. It would work with Linux but not UniVerse.
Because of that and its price tag, we looked for another product and
found Easy Soft. We had the trial version of it up and working within
hours and the price tag is very nice compared with DataDirect.

We will only be using to from UniVerse to access a MicroSoft SQL for our
credit card numbers this is due to PCI compliance and we wanted 1
database for all of our different systems. From the UniVerse side of
things, we will have to access the SQL with a batch process 2 times a
day, with an average of 2-3000 records.

Just wondering if anyone has utilized it and had any issues with it that
we should be aware of in making our purchasing decision.

RE: [U2] [UV] checking files for corruption

You can try doing a uvbackup on the file to /dev/null. When the file is
backed up it checks the integrity of the file.

Subject: [U2] [UV] checking files for corruption

Hi all,

UV 10.1.8

What is the best way to verify the integrity of a file while users are
accessing (if possible at all)?

I see that fixtool will set an exclusive file lock when executing
without any options. If I understand correctly, the -start and -stop
options will scan the file setting group locks. Would it work to set
-start to 1 and -stop to the last group in the file? If so, how do I
tell what the last group of the file is?

Thanks in advance,

Scott Thompson
