I should have mentioned that the encoding was really slow compared
with what I've been used to when encoding in 3ivx. I think this might
be because of the multi-pass setting. You could probably use single
pass but my understanding is the compression might not be as efficient.

Thank you Markus. Even though the doc has a psd suffix, my Mac was
set to open it in Preview where the 4 layers were invisible. This is
the first file of its type I have ever received with that clever
multi-layer approach to combining files into one. So you're right. I
wasn't understanding
Theres no clear agreement or concensus, up until now the advise from
most people was to avoid h264 until more people could view it.
Now things like the ipod supporting h264 are going to help, it will
likely help encourage people to upgrade. People with no video ipod but
who want to buy videos

interest of broader distribution and maximum compatibility I'm
sticking with MP4 for the foreseeable

Mpeg4 is where the maket has been up till now, but h264 is now

Both the video ipod and the PSP work with H264, and as the quality is
better I am hoping that people viewing stuff on these devices quickly

Yes, we're using H.264 within a .mov file because of the extra
features available with .mov, such as clickable hyperlinks.
Based on our vlog's stats, the vast majority of our watchers are using
iTunes. So we place a link at the end of each vid hoping they'll
click through to our site and leave
Fast-start, scrolling, scrubbing and jumping. These are the most
important features for viewing temporal video online, I think.
Quicktime handles all of these features much better than Flash for
quality video for the same speed/file size.

a .mov file into iTunes, hit command-i and then edit the meta-data for
the file exactly the same as you would for an mp3.
