Re: Apple Bugs And The Blind Community

2012-05-10 Thread Fanus
Yes, I find it strange that after all the upgrades wich
worked quite well, people crusify Apple for a bug in the
latest upgrade. My view is for instance that the last 3
upgrades of JAWS are the most unstable of all since JAWS 5
and we have to pay an arm and leg for each upgrade and no
one complains.

Hey you have to find the language roter in the voiceover settings. You
can do this by going to settings, general, accessibility, then
voiceover. Right after roter, there's the language roter. From there
find the language you want to remove. It should say that the language
is selected. All you have to do is double tap on it and it should no
longer say selected.

Re: iOS 5.1.1 is out Voiceover going silent bug

2012-05-10 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
well this all goes to show that it could be what I say it is, we need a few
control subjects who use the speed at 100% or at least more than 60%, and who
have the issue, to reduce speed for say 48 hours or so and see if it occurred.

I use my device at 40%, last night I upped it to 100%, and used it like that
for about an hour or so.

I rapidly swiped through news apps, switching to letter navigation etc, and
swiping like mad.

once, and only once, I got Voice Over to hang for about 10 seconds, this has
never, ever happened before, and the only change I've made is the speed of my
synth.

I continued to swipe at my usual forotious rate. Now this is only one test, we
need those of you who state you have the issue to drop your speed, just for a
day or so, and see if the issue goes away.

it maybe that previous coding of the OS allowed without issue the speed that
some users like, but, that coding in iOS v5.0 does not.

I'm not saying that it is the speed issue, but, that it seems plausible, and
without anyone who has the issue, declaring that they have the issue, with
speed below 60% then we cannot rule it out.

more over, we know that the iOS device continues to operate normally, only
the speech stops, leading me to consider it a synth specific issue.

the people who have the issue, seem to have the speed set high, were as,
those who say they do not, seem to have it set at 50% or less.

I do not have the issue, never have and I have owned all three versions of

So that's 6 iOS devices, and never had the issue, but, I have my speech rate

Does anyone with the speech stopping issue, have their synth rate set at a
more moderate level say, 60% or less?

If we can find a user who has their synth speed at 60% or less, who has the
issue, then I'll begin to consider it being a different cause of this issue,
but, the more I talk to folk about this, the more those who suffer it seem to
 have in common.

That is, a tendency to be running your Voice Over synth up at 90% - 100%.

I personally have my speech rate set to one hundred percent. I think I would
go crazy trying to use my phone at half that speed for any length of time.
Maybe someone can go ahead and give it a try and see if that's really a
contributor, but I doubt it since so many of us have experienced this
particular bug under all sorts of circumstances and situations across

my iPhone 4S. This happens whether I reboot the phone prior to playing,
clear the apps from the app switcher, and clear the memory from apps like
xSysInfo. The crashing has always happened during the practice area.
Sometimes as soon as I do the shake section, sometimes when I do the drums.
If I try skipping the practice area by just tapping and holding the corner,
it goes a bit longer, but still crashes eventually. Here's the odd thing.
The iPhone 3GS I upgraded from had no problems both before and after I
jailbroke it. The iPhone 4S has had these problems both before and after
jailbreaking. I know you say on your web site you don't support jailbroken
devices. I get that, but the fact that the iPhone 3GS worked after a
jailbreak and the iPhone 4S didn't work at all, regardless of the jailbreak
tells me that there is something else going on here other than jailbreaking
being the cause of the problems. I also have an iPod Touch third generation,
not jailbroken, and the game works on it.

If you have any ideas of what else I can try, please let me know. This is a
great app, and I would like to play it on the iPhone 4S.

so, you have a good point here.

Re: getting refunds for unauthorized third-party charges

2012-05-10 Thread Brent Harding
I don't know if the bank can help me. They just deliver the bill. I paid
Sprint the portion I would owe if this charge wasn't there by subtracting
$9.99 from the total, but Sprint implies it's all up to these unknown people

This is probably something you should take up with your bank to either
dispute and or block charges from this company or simply request a new
credit card and change the billing info on your Sprint account and disable
any automatic billing features.

So it's happened to me twice in 24 hours. I was about to email and agree but

hq Daniel by default. How do I check?
I personally don't think that making the speed down for 48 hrs will be any use

How To Revert To Old Apps

2012-05-10 Thread Teresa Cochran
hi, all,

I've successfully used the method outlined in this website to restore the old
version of Google Books, since accessibility is broken in the latest version. I
thought this might be useful. It involves restoring the apps from trash or Time
Machine in Mac OS X. I'd imagine this could work with the recycle bin in
Windows, too. I like the name of the site as well. :)

I love this game and I hope they don't give up on it. So hopefully the
response I got wasn't a canned one. I would urge those of you who play
this game and have 4S phones, to also contact them and give them a
positive report on how it doesn't work. If you read the app reviews,
it's obvious that we, blind users, are not the only ones who have this
issue with the 4S.

More feedback on speed dots?

2012-05-10 Thread Traci
Hi all,

I went through some of the viPhone archives and read about folks using the
speed dots screen covers.

I was hoping to get some more feedback on the 2 models. If I understand them
correctly, 1 model has all the letters covered with dots except fj, and the
other model has fj covered. Both models have the other dots sprinkled around.

I'm curious who is using which one and if they feel they are worth it.

For those of you using the model where nearly all the letters are covered, are
you able to text without really paying attention to voiceover? Say for
example, you are in a noisy place.

My last concern is the screen placement and longevity. I read a handful of
messages where folks couldn't get their screens to stick and stay in place.
How annoying for a $10 purchase. Any further thoughts on this? Is it a good
idea to take the cover to Verizon and have them fit it?

Thanks for the info. In a perfect world I'd have a braille display, but $10 is
far more realistic then $1700. :)

Re: More feedback on speed dots?

2012-05-10 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, I use the one with more dots. I find it very helpful even in noisy
environments, but still like the voice to be heard to be sure. As for
sticking or not sticking, if you find that it doesn't stick, you can go
to a room full of steam, such as the bathroom when the shower is running
and the door is closed, and you can re-affix the screen protector.

fj, and the other model has fj covered. Both models have the other

For those of you using the model where nearly all the letters are
covered, are you able to text without really paying attention to
voiceover? Say for example, you are in a noisy place.

My last concern is the screen placement and longevity. I read a handful
of messages where folks couldn't get their screens to stick and stay in
place. How annoying for a $10 purchase. Any further thoughts on this? Is
it a good idea to take the cover to Verizon and have them fit it?

Thanks for the info. In a perfect world I'd have a braille display, but
$10 is far more realistic then $1700. :)

RE: More feedback on speed dots?

2012-05-10 Thread Rick Alfaro
Traci,

I have the standard model with dots on all the letters except for f and j.
I do find having it quite helpful. However I'm not sure I'd go as far as to
say I'd be totally comfortable with absolutely no VO feedback. Note that I
do have clicks turned off and have keyboard voice set to none but I do get a
confirmation when placing my finger on a letter. Honestly, I've never tried
it as I would normally be wearing a BT headset when out in a noisy place and
using my phone.

Regarding longevity, I've had mine on for several months with no issues. I
do highly recommend you have a sighted person put it on the screen for you
however to avoid bubbles, and to make sure everything lines up properly.

Best,

Rick

RE: getting refunds for unauthorized third-party charges

2012-05-10 Thread Cristobal
Go through the usual steps. Ask to speak to a supervisor, document your
calls and who you spoke to. Email them with the same queries etc. Complain
politely, but insistently and if you want, as someone else on the list
recommended reach out to a third party government agency if you want to go
that rout. If all else fails or you just dont' want to deal with the
headaches, change your number. I think the Sprint fee is something like
$25.00.

This third-party biller doesn't have my credit card number, just my phone
number. I called Sprint last night, and the lady was kind of rude and
basically told me because my number might be available to people, that
consents you to be billed any amount by anyone who has the ability. She said
that Sprint can't and won't reverse it because it's up to these people,
likely overseas, or the people you get when you call their 800 number sound
like they're overseas. Maybe this company will send a check, which is a
hastle, but I wonder why Sprint can't just deal with this mess when it's on
their bill?

I had something similar happen with me and ATT. They did 3 things.

 1. Reversed the charge.

 2. Contacted the company on my behalf and had them stop any future billing

 to my ATT account.

 3. Put a block on my phone lines so that text charges can no longer happen

 without a code.

Of course, the company in question didn't have my credit care number and
so this may be a different situation. However I've had to change my card
number before due to other problems and I know it can be APITA.

Re: Contacts

You shouldn't lose anything. I would recommend backing up your iTunes
library folder, as it saves some sync settings and makes the process
of setting up easier. It's usually located under your My Music
folder. Whether you do so or not, though, iTunes will stop syncing
contacts automatically. When you go into the sync settings to
re-enable it, iTunes should detect that you are syncing with a new
user account, and will ask if you want to merge all the contacts
between Outlook and your phone, or replace all the contacts on your
phone with the contacts in Outlook.

iCloud/Microsoft Outlook 2010 issues

2012-05-10 Thread scott blanks
Hey all,

My first post here. Great information thus far.

I'm trying to assist a friend who has an iPhone 4s, Microsoft Outlook
2010, and Jaws 13. He is attempting to get up and running with iCloud.
I'm pasting his message below in hopes that someone will have further
experience working with the cloud and Outlook, particularly in the
area of contacts and the calendar. His comments below are fairly
vague, so apologies in advance, but these are the only details I have
at the moment. Please speak up if you have any suggestions, hints, or
further questions that I can pass along to him that might help resolve
the issues. His message follows:

In addition to auto-complete problems, I have found my calendar is now
on ICloud. This apparently makes the reminders graphics inaccessible to
JAWS. It reads graphics and the subject of the calendar entry, but I
cannot move through it with the tab key, not even after finding it with
the JAWS cursor. I can dismiss it after getting in, but I can't move with the
tab key...at least it doesn't read accordingly.

All this makes me think I need to get Apple to change my ICloud settings
to have my MS Outlook update my IPhone, but not to let my IPhone update my
PC. Maybe this would allow my PC to act as it did before.

Re: Audible and Downcast

2012-05-10 Thread Kevin Barry

I believe audible titles are DRM protected so downcast won't play them.
The audible app is quite accessible from what I've seen though.

Cheers,

Ricardo,

good point, I'm also using the high quality premium voice.

which of course all ties into my point about speed.

those using higher speeds tend not to use the high quality premium voice
synth, as it does not scale as well.

so, you have a good point here.

re: More feedback on speed dots?

2012-05-10 Thread alex wallis

Hi list,
just to weigh in hear, I have had mine on since getting the 4s in I
think november or end of october last year, it has shown no sign of
coming off at all, and the dots seem to be standing up quite well to
being taken in and out of pockets etc.

I have the version with all the dots labeled.
Firstly, I didn't get anyone sighted to help me put it on the screen, I
used the hole which goes over the home button as a guide and was able to
hook it over the button and then just wiggle it slightly to sort lining
up out.
Interestingly though, when sighted people have looked at my screen, they
have commented that the dots are not quite lined up with the icons, as
far as I can tell, the protector is on straight, at least the holes that
go over the home button and part that you put to your ear seem to be
lined up. So if it is on crooked it must be a tiny amount that isn't
noticeable by touch, unless of course the screen layout relative to the
position of the dots has changed minutely with the 4s.

Now, on to usefulness, I have to be honest, I don't really find the
protector that useful, the only real reason I keep it on the phone is to
keep the screen clean, and I suppose if I wanted to, I could buy a
normal clear protector that would serve just as well.
I got both models when getting the protector, as I really wasn't sure
which one I would need, but the second is still in its unopened packet.
The reason I don't find the protector as useful as I thought I might, is
mostly because I use a bluetooth keyboard for texting, I just couldn't
be bothered to mess around with the virtual keyboard for that, as I
moved from a tradition of nokia communicators all of which had physical
quwerty keyboards. So I have never learned to text in the traditional
way with an ordinary keypad. I also use the bluetooth keyboard for
dialing phone numbers from scratch when not on a call.
If I have to dial numbers internally on a call, I just take the phone
away from my head and flick across the screen to find the one I need on
the keypad rather than trying to aim for it in particular.

I do find the 4 buttons on the bottom useful for locating the individual
icons in the dock, but I think I would manage that quite easily without
them.
Out of interest, what are the other dots useful for finding that aren't
letters? I usually just get by by flicking from control to control, but
if the other dots really do help with navigation I may see if I find
using them more efficient.
the dots I am thinking of that I never use are the row of 3 on the top,
with the dot right below the line of 3 on the right hand side with no
other dots near it. the end nearest to the sleep wake button.

the other dot which I don't use marks the center of the screen.
In fact, in all the time I have been using the phone, I have never had
any need to particularly find the center of the screen.
any feedback on my navigation style is welcome, I suspect most of you
reading this will be comparing me to a sighted person who can't touch
type and just pecks at the keyboard with two fingers, as I suspect my
navigation method of constant flicking is far from efficient.

I look forward to any replies,
Alex.

Hi. I just want to let you know that I'm experiencing crashes with
Aurify on my iPhone 4S. This happens whether I reboot the phone
prior to playing, clear the apps from the app switcher, and clear
the memory from apps like xSysInfo. The crashing has always happened
during the practice area. Sometimes as soon as I do the shake
section, sometimes when I do the drums. If I try skipping the
practice area by just tapping and holding the corner, it goes a bit
longer, but still crashes eventually. Here's the odd thing. The
iPhone 3GS I upgraded from had no problems both before and after I
jailbroke it. The iPhone 4S has had these problems both before and
after jailbreaking. I know you say on your web site you don't
support jailbroken devices. I get that, but the fact that the iPhone
3GS worked after a jailbreak and the iPhone 4S didn't work at all,
regardless of the jailbreak tells me that there is something else
going on here other than jailbreaking being the cause of the
problems. I also have an iPod Touch third generation, not
jailbroken, and the game works on it.

If you have any ideas of what else I can try, please let me
know. This is a great app, and I would like to play it on the
iPhone 4S.

Re: getting refunds for unauthorized third-party charges

2012-05-10 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
That sounds still like Sprint is giving you the run-around. Since the
company is billing Sprint, who is in turn billing you, there has to be
something that Sprint can do. It's annoying for sure, but I would keep
at it and if all else fails, then have Sprint change your cell number at
no charge to you. Unfortunately that would be a last resort because of
the hassle of giving out your new number. I wish I had a better
solution, but from working in the cell phone field in the past, I have
an idea of what can be done. If you have to be a pest, then that's what
you have to do by keep calling Sprint, logging who you talk to, and
speak to a supervisor, or a level 2 person if at all possible.

She said that Sprint can't and won't reverse it because it's up to these

I had something similar happen with me and ATT. They did 3 things.

1. Reversed the charge.

2. Contacted the company on my behalf and had them stop any future
billing to my ATT account.

3. Put a block on my phone lines so that text charges can no longer
happen without a code.

Of course, the company in question didn't have my credit care number
and so this may be a different situation. However I've had to change
my card number before due to other problems and I know it can be APITA.

Re: how to put songson a jailbroken i phone?

2012-05-10 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, whether it's jailbroken or not, you can always put songs on it via a
file browser app such as Filer. If you want to use the Music app though,
you can get a jailbreak app called PwnTunes. This app basically turns
your iPhone into what would be considered a normal usb stick. When it's
in this way, you can copy music files to it and build the music library
and play the music from the Music app just as if you had synced it.
Regarding your contacts, even without jailbreaking you can sync contacts
either from iCloud or Google contacts and never use iTunes for that.

Hope this helps.

Re: un-registering iPhone 4G-Need urgent help

2012-05-10 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

You can definitely erase your friend's info and get your data on the phone.
Here's how.

Back up your old phone to either iTunes or iCloud before you start. That way,
you'll have the very latest info on your new phone.

To erase all the data on the new phone, go to Settings, choose General, then
Reset, then the option to erase all data. YOu'll have to confirm a couple of
times that you want to erase all the data.

Once the phone restarts, you can turn on VoiceOver with triple-click Home. Go
through the setup. At some point, you'll be asked whether you want to restore
from an iTunes or iCloud backup or set it up as a new phone. Choose iTunes or
iCloud, depending where you backed up your old phone. If it's backed up in
iTunes, you'll need to connect the new iPHone to your computer to load the
data. This will include your contacts and apps, and all your app data.

Best,
Anna
