Re: Deleting photos from Talking Goggles and Camfind
Open Camera or Photos, either will give access to camera roll. I think the actions button is the key, tap that, go down and tap all the pictures you don't want, then back to the bottom for the possible actions, which includes Delete ## photos, images or whatever. Re: Which app is better for the following?
Hi. If you have a standscan pro, and would like to use it, there are some better alternatives than digit-eyes, my experience with digit-eyes is that you will have to be very patient if you do not know exactly where the barcode is located. That works better with the help of standscan. with the following programs: Redlaser. It is very easy to use with standscan. I found another app called: qr code Search for: Best barcode scanner -- scan qr code made by simpleact inc version 1.2.2. With this app you will have to hold your item in standscan pro and lift it a little, but it works great, and it can search for barcodes on google. Best regards Annie. As to which app is best for what this really depends on your personal usage patterns and the product and the things you are trying to identify. I think a combination of Digit-Eyes for actual barcode reading and then Tap Tap See and Talking Googles satisfies most of my needs with the occasional use of VisWiz where I want a specific answer to something I am trying to figure out. It’s just like with navigation apps, Sendero LookAround often gives me the information I need, but Ariadne is also good and for turn-by-turn Navigon is probably still at the top of my list. The nice thing with the iPhone is that for a relatively small investment in apps you can find some to suit most of your needs. For me having Digit-Eyes, Talking Goggles, Tap Tap See and VisWiz is like having a small selection of specialty tools in my toolbox which are good for a certain purpose and all it cost me was $21 since Tap Tap See and VisWiz are free, Digit-Eyes is $20 and Talking Goggles is a Dollar. Question from prospective user
I am interested in the VO-calendar but want more info Can I still enter calendar appointments with Siri if I use VO-Calendar? My main objective is to have the calendar read out in a list format so I can skip all the dates that do not have events. I also want it to start the list with a date or week that is convenient. My Facebook birthday calendar got synced with my calendar so that when I try to view a list view it starts with January of 2012 and goes to 2014. I want now and a few weeks or months ahead or back. Will VO-Calendar do this? The price is very high in comparison to most iPhone apps so I want to be sure I really will use it. I have tried quite a few apps to attempt to get the calendar to show a convenient list view but have not had success. Do any of you who use this app have any advice for me? I did read that it was difficult to set alarms with it but I usually enter calendar appointments with an app called Add Reminder to Calendar and this is quick and easy. What I need is an app that lets me view events in a list view and find specific events . Thanks for any advice. Entering symbols like Star and brackets
Hi All, How does one quickly enter unusual symbols such as asterist (*), brackets, degrees symbols, etc? I know how to enter manually using the touch pad, but this involves 3 different layers including More symbols and then shift with more symbols. I'm actually hoping to use Siri within Search to quickly look for something like the following: *.MP3 If anyone knows of any tips and tricks to dictating this kind of search edit field entry I'm all ears. This activates the so-called button free mode. If you do manage to activate it which usually takes me a few tries, you can do a single finger swipe from left to right on the top half of the screen to go forward 60 seconds or a single finger swipe right to left to go backward. If you swipe vertically it will insert a Bookmark. You can turn Voiceover on again when you are done and find a Close button at the top left which will close/turn off button free mode. Keep in mind that even while it is still on, once you turn on Voiceover the swipe gestures to forward or go back don't work any more. I suggest you write to Audible and tell them as well that you would like to see a Jump Forward option similar to the Jump Back button although I am pretty sure they got the message and I assume their next release will reintroduce some more controls again. Re: whatsapp
I have been in that situation where spending a buck required asking myself do I really need it or do I just want it. Often times it resolved my inner conflict and yes, sometimes I ignored that inner voice and spent the dollar anyway. It's no crime to be poor and I try to remind myself that I'm eligible too and have had to make those kinds of decisions in the past. - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, April 07, 2013 9:09 PM Subject: RE: whatsapp Hi Fred, To you or me and maybe to most people on this list 99 Cents is not an amount we think about a lot. However, keep in mind that there are people on this list from countries like Vietnam, India, some African countries and who knows where else to whom spending a Dollar may not be something they just can do without thinking about it. Yes, if somebody from such a country has an iPhone that might be an indication that they are not as poor as others although the iDevice they have may just be an older iPhone 3GS that was passed on to them. In any case, I don't think it's very respectful to tell anybody it's only 99 Cents so what's the big deal because those 99 Cents may in some countries just be most of the food money for a day. My girl-friend in the Philippines works 9 hours a day and 6 days a week waitressing in a hotel restaurant and she takes home about $5 a day for that. Even those of us in North American, Australia and most European countries who have little are very lucky to be where they are. There are also people to whom $10 or $20 or even $100 isn't a big deal, but I bet if you commented that you couldn't afford something right that moment and it was $100 you would not appreciate some rich person's comment What's the big deal, it's only a hundred bucks. OK, I don't want to start a big debate about poverty and all that and I don't want to offend you in any way, Fred, but I have been to third-world countries and such comments just rub me the wrong way. It's too bad Apple doesn't allow people to gift any apps to people in other countries because otherwise I'd just send that person the What's Up app. Regards, Sieghard From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Fred Olver Sent: Sunday, April 07, 2013 8:31 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: whatsapp What's the big deal, I looked, it's only $0.99 U.S. Fred Olver - Original Message - From: David Chittenden To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, April 07, 2013 10:28 PM Subject: Re: whatsapp Nope, not unless the manufacturer decides to give it away promotion. Re: autocorrect for idiots
Hello Jordan, I know how to use this feature quite well so here's the following instructions on how to do it. First of all AutoCorrect is on my phone so you don't have to change that if you have changed it, going to settings general and works as AutoCorrect and change that on. Then going to the texting or email after you like to use composer email. Spell the word that you hire you think it should be spelled then punch th double tap on th at the space key then after you hear misspelled, double tap on the delete key thingy Williard where the two spelt and the word menu item. Now this also brings up of a choice of words and it gives you between two and three words to choose from. Double tap on the one that you want and you should be good. OPS before I get bothered that I didn't get full instructions, I forgot to mention one more thing, after you hear the word menu item swiped the left and that'll bring you up to your choice of words to choose from. Re: Using a phone that has been jailbroken without a Sim card
Hi, In this situation, the unlock won't have been because of the jailbreak as a software unlock for the 5 hasn't been released yet. The answer to your question depends on the version of iOs that the phones are running. If they are running anything other than 6.1.3, you may be able to use redsn0w to hactivate the phones and essentially turn them into iPod touches until you restore them through iTunes, at which point they would ask for a sim again. Unfortunately I haven't attempted hactivation for about 8 months so I can't be sure that it will work on the iPhone 5. If the phones are running 6.1.3 then I'm afraid you're out of luck. In the UK we have what are known as pay as you go (Or paig) sims that are extremely cheap to obtain and this would probably be the root that I would take if I just wanted to use the phones as touches - E.G. buy 2 sims and install them in the phones but never use them. Having said this, if the eventual goal is to have an iPod touch, from a profitability point of view, it would probably make sense to simply sell the 2 phones and buy a single touch. Cheers, Ben. Hi, unlocking and jailbreaking are not synonymous. You can currently jailbreak an iPhone 5 as long as it's not running iOS 6.1.3, but I don't believe you can unlock it. Re: Talking Goggles: Automatically Closing of Program
Hello, Talking Goggles would automatically close while,I was using it and not only when is laid idle. Zesterday, I was using it to read the computer monitor because I was place in a position where a windows screen blocked the screen reader. It crashed about every couple of minutes. I do understand the concept of how to move apps, and how to move apps into folders! But, is there some trick to getting an app into a folder? I face the most difficulty when the folder sits on row 2, column 4, and the app simply refuses to land on the folder. Does the folder sit slightly up/down/left/right of the direct row/column? I explore the screen a bit before moving apps around and moving them into folders, but it sounds like you're already doing that. RE: Navigon
Hi, I mean no offense, but you must have set something incorrectly or you are not putting in a route. Navigon will not give you any voice feedback if you just open the app and walk around. If you are at your house wherever that is and you want to go to let's say the Best Buy which is a mile away, then you have to create a route and either put in the street address of the Best Buy or you have to see if you can find it as a Point of Interest maybe under Shopping. If you have Around Me you could see if you find it in there, then tap on the Route button and then if Navigon is on your phone you can pick Navigon as a routing application and Around Me will send the information to Navigon and all you have to do is tap on Start to start your route. Then once you start walking, Navigon will give you voice directions, but it will still not announce cross streets and so on, it will only tell you where you have to turn. Of course you also have to make sure you have downloaded the maps for your area/state, that for best results you have the speed profile set to Pedestrian with Voice Announcement and that you select the TTS voice, not the human voice. The human voice will tell you, for example, Turn left in 100 metres, but only the TTS voice would say, for example, Turn left onto Main Street in 100 metres. Raul did a Podcast on how to properly enter addresses into Navigon, I think it's on Applevis. Regards, Sieghard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: is there any way to get whatsapp messanger free
Hi Steve, If you don't have a credit card you obviously wouldn't be able to buy it online from Apple. As Chris pointed out, many places sell them like grocery stores, drug stores, probably Wallmart, Target, Best Buy etc. Keep in mind that once you buy the gift card, you need a rather long code that is on the card and that consists of a random series of numbers and letters. You might need sighted help to get it off the card. What I usually do is when I buy a card at a store which I typically only do is when they have a promotion going like buy a $50 card for $40, then I just pull out my phone, I go to the app store, tap on the Featured tab at the bottom left of the phone and wait for the page to load. I then touch the Featured tab again and swipe left 2 or 3 times until I get to Redeem, I go into that and ask the clerk at the store to scratch the code and read it to me. I'll put it in right away and redeem the gift card, then I check my balance which you do in that same area and once I make sure the balance is there I just tell the clerk to throw out the card since at that point the card has been redeemed and is useless. RE: a battery saver, but effective?
Hi Ramy, I doubt such apps will do much despite their claims. I would just follow normal battery saving techniques like making sure you turn off Bluetooth and especially WiFi if you are out and about and don't use it. WiFi uses up a fair amount of battery. Also make sure you don't have any GPS apps running unless you need them and don't set location based reminders like Remind me to call John when I get home, these use location services and drain your battery faster. If that is not enough you would be much better off trying to find either aa battery case or an external battery which would allow you to charge your phone when it gets below 10%, if you try and find something with at least 1500 to 1800 MA you should be able to charge your phone back to 100% if you start when you get the 10% notification. RE: Moving apps into folders?
Hi jordan, The folders are exactly aligned in the rows and columns. I find it much easier to move a folder next to an app I want to put in it then the other way around. If you move an app and you accidently let go in the wrong spot you may put it into another folder or create a new one. If you move a folder you can really go with the little beeps as to how many spots you moved it left, right, up or down. Hence if I have an app in the very right place in row 4 and I want to move that into a folder that sits in row 2 and column 2 (second from the left edge) then I move the folder into row 4 column 4 which means into the position the app is in, this will push the app into column 3 on row 4 which means it will be just to the left of the folder. I would simply double tap and hold the folder, then drag it straight right 2 beeps which means it's now in column 4 on row 2, then I drag it straight down 2 beeps. Now I look for the app to the left of the folder, I double tap and hold on it and drag it to the right just a bit until it says it's on the folder, then let go. Now I can drag the folder back to where I want it. This primarily is only a matter of practice and as long as you have good special awareness and are able to drag your finger straight across a row or straight up or down you'll get better at it. What will make it more unpredictable is if you have problems with the directions, e.g. you think you are dragging your finger straight across row 2, for example, but in fact you are dragging it across and down or across and up. Re: iPad mini question
In settings/general, there is a choice to use the side button as a mute button or as a lock button, so you could set it as a lock button and lock the mini into protrait that way. If you want to use the mini in portrait mode and don't think you'll want it in landscape mode much if at all, then set the side button to mute and therefore unmute, the sounds of the iPad. Then, bring up the app switcher and perform a swipe with three fingers fromleft to right across the screen. This will bring up page 1 of the app switcher. In there you will find the lock switch. Put the mini in oportrait, then double tap the lock button. You will hear it say something about locked in portrait. Dismiss the app switcher and your mini is now locked in portrait mode. RE: a battery saver, but effective?
Hi, Recently there was a message about turning on screen curtain and saving battery life. RE: a battery saver, but effective?
Well, after reading this, I decided to do a bit more research. It's still up for grabs whether or not screen curtain saves battery power. I have read in different sources that it does and I have read that it does not. The following from the VoiceOver Wiki suggests that it does. VoiceOver can also turn off the display but leave the touch screen sensitive to touch, saving battery power. Apple calls this feature Screen Curtain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VoiceOver Of course, Who knows who writes these wiki articles. So, it's still a mystery I will have to simply experiment with. Zello and iPhone question
Two questions. 1. Are there some apps that when working in them phone calls cannot come through? It seems that both in mail and in Braille Touch that calls will not cut off the app and give me a way to answer. The tone for a voicemail will chime, but I cannot answer my phone. Maybe the way it is supposed to be? 2. I have Zello Walkie-Talkie and user name is Reggie Alvarado in case anyone wants to add me. Listened to applevis podcast and understand most of the things I need to do. However, though I am on Applevis and see there are people there to talk, I cannot hear them. Something I need to turn on? Re: a battery saver, but effective?
a battery saver, but effective?None of them actually can save you battery power. They just monitor power consumption and the apps that your not using at the time so you can close them and I'm not all that sure that works either. I've tried deleting apps from the app switcher as somebody said you have all those apps opened and I never saw that that made any difference either so these kinds of apps probably won't gain you any extra battery power. Just because there's an app for that doesn't always mean it's worth anything in my opinion. - Original Message - From: Ramy Moustafa To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, April 09, 2013 6:41 AM Subject: a battery saver, but effective? Re: Using a phone that has been jailbroken without a Sim card
Thanks, Ben. I think he should probably buy the two sim cards, as you suggest. Is redsn0w a program he can find somewhere, in case he chooses to look into that option? On 4/9/13, Ben Mustill-Rose b...@benmr.com wrote: Hi, In this situation, the unlock won't have been because of the jailbreak as a software unlock for the 5 hasn't been released yet. Re: Screen Curtain a battery saver, but effective?
While not having done as much extensive research as Neil, grin, my brother, who is sighted, says that the screen curtain effectively shuts off the display, while still making it sensitive to touch, so, the less amount of light being emitted by the cell phone only stands to reason that it would save battery life. Having said that, it's been my experience that my battery drops more quickly when my screen curtain is off doing the exact same thing, as when the screen curtain is on, so I guess in this respect, the research I did was experiential. Smiles. One can even take this a bit further using a laptop as an effective means of understanding the concept. If one puts a laptop side to side with a screen-less note taker, one finds that the note taker uses up it's battery life a great deal longer than the laptop. Even if using a laptop compared to a netbook, especially those utilizing a solid state hard drive, the smaller screen means less in the way of power needed to form the picture on the screen, especially comparing the 17 inch screen laptop to the minute 7 to 11 inch netbook screens. In conclusion, the less power you need to run something, the more battery life you'll save. At least that's been my experience. Hi Donna, I'm sure that if you read the edit field character by character you will find that the asterisk has been spelled letter by letter rather than the single symbol being entered. Re: App similar to can I stream it?
Thank you very much for being willing to make your app more accessible. I really appreciate this. I don't have a lot of technical knowledge, so I can't explain to you how to do this, but I know that Apple does provide guidelines so that developers are able to make their apps work with voiceover. One thing that I noticed right away with the app was that the buttons, for the most part, were not labeled. Voiceover just would say button, button, button. If you could put identifiable labels on each of your buttons so that voiceover would be able to know what they were, that would go along way in making the app more accessible. Re: a battery saver, but effective?
Nope. I guess for me and probably for lots of people, it's the idea we've had engrained in us from using windows that less programs open makes it easier to switch between applications on the fly. I'm thinking of people who rely on the Alt+Tab keystroke to move between open programs. But, I was out today launching and then closing apps using the app switcher and if anything, all of that moving apps in and out of operation seemed to drain the battery faster. I had 38 percent battery power when I started my unintentional experiment and wound up with 22 percent battery power after about 2 hours of downloading and installing 2 apps as well as doing some live streaming while simultaneously switching between a combination of iMove, Talking Goggles, and the iPhone camera. Part of this was to demonstrate some features of the iPhone to sighted family members and also to get more familiar with how streaming and app usage behaved while using the phone completely on the Verizon network. I turned the screen curtain on and off numerous times and used the triple click home feature to turn VO on and off to make things easier for the sighted people using the phone. Today was unusual in that I normally don't have several apps open at once or download app after app and then mess around with their settings. I also don't have sighted folks using my phone so there's no need to adjust the screen curtain and VO settings. I noticed that the Wifi setting automatically gets deactivated while the blue tooth feature does not, this even if my keyboard was here at home while I was across town. Admittedly, this may have been the cause of the battery draining so quickly. I do keep the screen curtain on out of habit just as a privacy precaution. I've lived around sighted people all of my life, so I've learned to be a bit proactive when it comes to keeping my net surfing/phone usage as private as possible. I had an app I ran on my Symbian phone that took certain battery saving steps as the battery wore down. It would start by turning off radios, dimming the screen and closing applications. It was all configurable, i.e. you could go in and configure it to turn off certain things or shut down certain apps as you went from 3 bars of battery life to 2 bars and then to 1 bar. Bluetooth and open apps may not make much difference, but if you're in a situation where you need to stretch things out, every little bit can help. Obviously, you also don't need such an app because you can do all of this manually, but I found this app was nice in case I forgot to turn off bluetooth when I wasn't using it, and besides, why use an iPhone if you aren't going to run apps that help you remember things and keep you from needing to do a few mundane tasks. Re: Screen Curtain a battery saver, but effective?
What you're saying makes sense if the screen is actually turned off when the screen curtain is on and requires less power than when the screen curtain is turned off. I've heard though, that the privacy of the screen curtain is handled by setting the background and the foreground colors to be the same. I don't know how it really works, but if this were the case, you would not see any battery savings. This is different then say my laptop running Ubuntu where I can physically turn the monitor off and no power at all is being sent to the monitor. Given that the screen on the iPhone is also a touch screen, they obviously can't kill all power to it. I run the screen curtain for privacy purposes. If it saves me battery power then that's great. If people find that running with the screen curtain on saves them some battery power then they should use the screen curtain. As I said, I haven't noticed a big difference myself, but I go ahead and run with the screen curtain on anyway. Re: a battery saver, but effective?
I've heard that bluetooth being on doesn't drain the battery much, but it has to use some power, and you might be in a situation where every little bit helps. I turn bluetooth off if I know I won't be using it for a while. I figure it saves some power and makes for a more secure device. RE: Screen Curtain a battery saver, but effective?
Christopher, what you are saying makes sense. The screen must be on in some way in order to use gestures. I know a couple people who have developed apps. I'll run this by them. That doesn't mean they are experts on screen curtain necessarily, but they might know a bit about it. It does no harm to ask. Thanks for your thoughts. Re: a battery saver, but effective?
In some rare cases, closing certain apps can indeed save battery power. For example, Downcast, Instapaper, and even Dropbox can monitor your location to perform certain tasks when your location changes. They will continue to do this even if you switch to another app or reboot your device. At times when saving battery power is essential, closing these apps can help. This applies not only to apps which monitor your location, but also to apps which are allowed to continue running indefinitely including VOIP apps. In most cases, aside from exceptions such as the examples above, apps are suspended by iOS after some time, I believe ten minutes, so closing them will not save battery power. Re: Moving apps into folders?
I mispoke. IOS 6 allows for 16 apps per folder on the iPhone 5. Andy -Original Message- From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Tuesday, April 09, 2013 11:42 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Moving apps into folders? Re: a battery saver, but effective?
Contrary to the beliefs of several people, Bluetooth management in the iPhone is extremely efficient. If nothing is connected, Bluetooth remains off. It is able to switch on rapidly when a Bluetooth signal is obtained, but the Bluetooth transceiver's system will only cause a couple percent per hour of increased battery drain when active with one device. Even wifi switched on but not connected is extremely well managed, so its drain is negligible. When connected to Wifi, on the other hand, and actively surfing, getting email, and other data transfer tasks, Wifi becomes quite draining. That said, the largest drain I've seen on my iPhone is from GPS. This makes sense when one considers how weak GPS signals actually are. I don't know of an app, but there is a PC application called Free Youtube Downloader, you just open the program and paste in the YouTube link and it will automatically start downloading the video. I was under the impression that what it does is set the brightness to 0. This would be the simplest implementation as well if this is the case. Re: Entering symbols like Star and brackets
Hi Arianna, Thank you for this no space tip as it actually works. For others, I asked about a method of dictating a search query such as *.MP3 and have it automatically entered as is without spaces. I have solved half of my problem and still can't figure out how to use the dictation to enter the asterisk symbol rather than the word asterisk. It might be due to my build as I'm about 2 updates behind on my iPod Touch 5th gen. Those using an iPhone can actually do this, so again, it might be isolated to the iPod Touch 5th gen and or it's older build. Re: Screen Curtain a battery saver, but effective?
Apple officially told me, on more than one occasion, that the screen curtain does not turn off the backlight. It merely adjusts the background and foreground colours to black. So, the only benefit to power savings is that the display is no longer making rapid alterations to match the requirements of running apps. Depending on the app, this can be a fairly substantial battery savings. If you do not want the power drain from the backlight, turn your screen brightness to 0. Re: Screen Curtain a battery saver, but effective?
Hi James, I just turned the brightness up on my iPod Touch 5th gen to 100%. I then activated the screen curtain with a triple 3-finger tap. I then went into Brightness and wallpaper and the percentage of screen brightness was still at 100%. There might be a difference between iPod Touch 5th gen and iPhone, but all things being equal, the suggestion you conveyed below might not be true in terms of screen curtain regulating brightness. Just a quick test so my results will vary with others'. (Smile). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
