RE: can you use paypal to pay for apps?

2013-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mich,

I just googled using paypal for a Canadian iTunes account. Here you find
many links to forums and articles where it is clear that Paypal is only an
option for US iTunes accounts.
In my opinion using an iTunes gift card is still one of the best options.
You can buy these just about anywhere including Safeway, Shopper's Drug
Mart, 7 1 1 and so on and they come as small as $15.
As was pointed out before, you sometimes even find a deal where somebody has
a promotion which allows you to buy a card at a discount.

Sieghard

Re: I finally contacted Schwan's about their app

2013-08-30 Thread Lisa belville

Hi, Vicky.

The Schwan's phone customer service is so flakey these days I don't even use
them anymore. I've had instances where orders were canceled only to have my
delivery person show up with bag in hand. I've had the same driver for
three years, so he just gave me his cell number and it works much better
this way.

Regarding the app, I installed it and couldn't get past the log in screen,
and I couldn't get there without a lot of what sounded like repetitious
double tapping on the various log in links. I get that this app is new, but
these people aren't designing these things in a vacuum anymore, so why it's
this buggy is beyond me unless the issues are due to it being hugely
incompatible with voice over. If I'd paid for this I'd be really irritated.

I'm farily certain there's a feedback link in the app itself, and this might
be a better place to try lodging a complaint.

Subject: I finally contacted Schwan's about their app

As the subject line says, I finally got around to contacting Schwan's
about their app not being very usable with VoiceOver. Truthfully, I might
not have called them today; but, when I got a push notification from them
telling me my next service date was tomorrow, although it actually isn't
until next Wednesday, I figured I had indeed better make sure no one from
Schwan's was going to show up at my door tomorrow.

The person with whom I spoke at their customer service number, she told me
not to worry about that message on my phone, and confirmed what I already
saw in my account regarding next Wednesday being my delivery date.
However, when I started to tell her of my problems with the iPhone app,
she told me it was a new app and bugs were to be expected. So, of course,
I next asked her to whom I would give feedback regarding such bugs, so
they could hopefully be fixed in the future. And, she gave me a web site
of:

schwans.com/app

When I checked out that site, though, it just gave a YouTube video
regarding the app, and had a few frequently asked questions. So, on the
Schwan's site, I went to their help link, then to their contact us link,
and there was a form I could fill out and submit. Thus, that is what I
did in the end.

Now, regarding that form, there was a place to choose a subject of the
inquiry; but, not finding one related to the iPhone app, I just chose
other in the drop down menu. Then, where one had to type their message,
it gave five hundred characters, and one could check and see how many
characters they had used as they went along. I would have liked to have
had a few more hundred characters to explain the things I tried to do with
the app, but I finally did manage to put some information into the form
and get it submitted.

Hi Lisa and All,

I didn't see a feedback button in the app. But, you were right
about a button, as I did see a contact us one. However, double
tapping on that button didn't produce any results, and thus I
couldn't open the contact us part of the app to reach them that
way. Also, in case anybody else wants to contact them and
reference the ticket number they gave me via email after I
submitted my information, that number is: LTK11153012825113X.

Re: Managing Files on iDevices

2013-08-30 Thread Alan Paganelli
I would add to that, you can also uncheck apps that you want deleted from
your phone. The advantage is, when you hit the apply button, you can do it
all in one shot. example,, if I want to roll back an app because it is not
as functional as the previous version I can check the previous version
assuming of course I didn't delete it from my computer. You should also
know that using a previous app that it might or might not work any longer.
For example, I like the previous version of the Chicago Bears app. Why?
Because it shows video in the title of the peace and the newer version does
not. This can be important if I'm not using WI-FI and the clip is video. I
might choose to view it when I get home and connect to my home network.
It's a minor thing but the developer is letting people chose for themselves
which version they want to use. That's not always the case.

Yes, if you go to your account info, you can configure your payment

RE: Pre-Order iOS7 without the Eye, and get 50% off

2013-08-30 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for setting me and others straight on your site. As I said, I
didn't see any other way to pay and it certainly was because I didn't go any
further when I got to the PayPal button. I would have been very surprised
for a person like you to make your site difficult to access because of a
captcha.

My feeling is that anyone who is subject to purchasing items on the net
should have a PayPal account. The less often I have to put my credit card
number on the net, the better. When I had my Visa account locked on me
because someone had broken into the secured site of one of the people I
purchased an item from, I got my PayPal account and it is linked to my Visa
card. Of course, I never have to put in my Visa card number. I haven't had
a problem since. I am not saying that I will never have a problem because,
who knows, even PayPal can someday be broken into. Fortunately, they have
an excellent record for security.

Hi Ron, just to clear up any confusion, a Pay Pal account isn't necessary to
buy something via Pay Pal. If you don't have a Pay Pal log-in, you can
complete a credit card form. There's no captcha or anything like that, and
it's a very straightforward process. Hope that helps others not just in this
instance, but if they ever want to buy something from someone who uses Pay

For others in a situation such as yours, please keep in mind that although
Jonathan's tutorial will undoubtedly be very good, you are also going to

Hi everyone, thanks to Raul for giving me permission to tell you all about
my new eBook coming in September.

Apple's iOS, the mobile operating system powering iPhoneR, iPadR and iPod
TouchR, is undergoing a significant revamp with the release of iOS7. The
majority of iOS users can see what's on the screen of their iOS-powered
devices, and they'll be preoccupied with analysis and debate about the
radically different look of the operating system. There'll be plenty of
technology blogs out there that showcase some of the new features of iOS
once it's released, but much of this coverage won't cover new features from
the perspective of those who use VoiceOver, Apple's built-in screen reader.

  Hi Marie,

You can do this one of 2 ways:

  1. If you hook your iPod up to iTunes and go to the Books section you
should have the following radio buttons (I assume you are using the latest
version of iTunes):

  Audio Books

  Books

  PDFs

  Authors

  List

You should probably try and check Audio Books and then tab until you get to a
list view which should then list all your titles. You can now just press the
Delete key and should get the following message:

  iTunes

Are you sure you want to delete the selected audiobook from your iTunes
library?

This audiobook will also be deleted from any iPod, iPhone, or iPad that
synchronizes with your iTunes library.

Do not ask me again checkbox, unchecked

  Delete Audiobook Cancel

You can now check the Do not ask me again checkbox if you don't want this
warning to pop up next time, then press the Delete Audio Book button.

You may get another warning/prompt whether you want to move the book to the
recycle bin or keep it in your library and unless you want to completely delete
the book from your computer, I would of course keep it. Either way, once you
deleted the book, you can sync your iPod and it should be removed.

  2. Go to your iPhone in iTunes, then tab past the Summary, Info, Apps,
Tones etc. radio buttons until you get to the Books radio button.

Check the Books radio button with the space bar and then continue to tab.

You will get to some other radio buttons like Sync Books, Sync All
Books, and then Sync Audio Books and Sync Selected Audio Books.

If Sync Audio Books or Sync Selected Audio Books is checked, you can
uncheck them and then sync your iPod and this should also remove the books from
your iPod, but it will keep them in your iTunes library should you want to sync
some books back at a later date.

If you check Sync Selected Audio Books you can tab a few more times and you
get to a treeview which should list all your books and each book should have a
checkbox.

If you maybe want to keep a couple of books on your iPod, you could uncheck
all the ones you don't want, then sync and only the ones you left checked will
remain.

This second method is probably better because the books stay in your iTunes
library where you can manage them at a later date.

This second method also is the same for music, tones, photos etc. You can
typically choose to Sync All or Sync Selected items whether it's music,
ringtones, books or photos and you have various choices how you want to do
this. In music, for example, if you choose to Sync Selected music, you can then
choose to check entire genres, albums, artists or playlists. With Tones you can
Sync Selected Tones and then you get a treeview with all your tones and you can
check the ones you want to sync.

  Sieghard

How do I delete Audible books from my IPod 5th gen?

2013-08-30 Thread marie baisez
I don't use the Audible app. to read or manage the books simply because it is
not available on the app. store here in France. I can't find a way of deleting
the books from the Pod, there is no action choice in the rota even if I
highlight only a part of a specific book.
I can't find a way of deleting the books from ITunes either, can't find a list
of them, probably did once but couldn't find an option to delete anywhere.
Can anyone help?
The books I have read take a lot of room that I wish to use for something else
now.
Thank you in advance, cheers now,

Creating a point in Ariadne GPS

2013-08-30 Thread Robin Christopherson
Dear listers

I’ve got a shiny new guide dog (Archie, german shepherd, in case you’re
wondering) and there’s a bridge in a park I used to hit every time with Tenby
but could do with some help on with Archie. I have several GPS apps (not
Blindsquare for info) and of the ones I’ve got I believe that it’s only Ariadne
GPS and My Way Lite that allow you to create a point and then navigate to it.
My Way Lite seems about as counterintuitive as an app could possibly be so,
unless someone can give me a swift brain transplant, I’ll pass on that one. On
Ariadne GPS I’ve created points in the past as I can see them in there – but
again I think I’m probably a candidate for a regular dose of Omega 3 as I’ll be
blowed if I can find out how to create one now. I’ve been through it several
times and can’t see how to create a point at the point where I’m standing and
give it a name etc.

So please can a clever clogs out there give me step by step?

Oh, and by the way, when I say “Hit it every time” I mean in the way one would
want to hit a destination and not in the way one would want to hit, say, a
fellow Sumo wrestler.

Thanks, Robin.

Moderator's message about repeated questions - Was Re: where do I go in itunes to check and change my payment info?

2013-08-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Mich, your friendly moderator here, just wondering why you have
sent the same question around 3 times that I've counted so far? It
cannot be a glitch in your system because each of the separate questions
is worded differently, so I'm curious as to what's going on? Remember
that in some cases you will not see your own posts to the list, but you
can be sure they are getting to you. Also, keep in mind that if you ask
a question here and you don't get an answer fast enough, then you should
wait more, or you should try finding the answer elsewhere, like the list
archives, or Google. We welcome questions and discussion on list for
sure, but it does get a bit annoying when the same question is asked in
the span of a day or two by the same person.

I hope this helps.

Re: Creating a point in Ariadne GPS

2013-08-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Robin,

The Add to favourites button is to the right of Start monitoring at the top of
the screen.

Good luck with Archie! That's the name of my husband, by the way.

I, too, have a new guide dog by the name of Galda and we're learning to find my
usual places, too. A hidden tennis ball at the place I don't want to miss works
well with her.

Cheers,

Anne

Blindsquare for info) and of the ones I’ve got I believe that it’s only
Ariadne GPS and My Way Lite that allow you to create a point and then
navigate to it. My Way Lite seems about as counterintuitive as an app could
possibly be so, unless someone can give me a swift brain transplant, I’ll
pass on that one. On Ariadne GPS I’ve created points in the past as I can see
them in there – but again I think I’m probably a candidate for a regular dose

been through it several times and can’t see how to create a point at the

So please can a clever clogs out there give me step by step?

Oh, and by the way, when I say “Hit it every time” I mean in the way one

 say, a fellow Sumo wrestler.

 Thanks, Robin.

Phone Drive app on sale for $0.99 (August 30, 2013); reminder that Prizmo OCR app is still on sale for $4.99

2013-08-30 Thread Esther
Hi All,

The Phone Drive app is on sale today for $0.99. It usually lists for
$1.99. This app can be use to transfer files between your computer and iOS
device and view various file types (play music, read documents, etc.) It
has Dropbox and iCloud support, is a universal app (for both iPhone and
iPad), and has good international language support (localized for 15
languages). There's a very nice AppleVis podcast demonstrating this app:
http://www.applevis.com/podcast/episodes/phone-drive-use-your-ios-device-portable-wireless-flash-drive

Here's the link to the AppleVis directory entry:
http://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/utilities/phone-drive

And here's the App Store links to the app:
• Phone Drive ($0.99 usually lists for $1.99) by Eightythree Technology
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/phone-drive/id431033044?mt=8

Phone Drive usually stays on sale for only a couple of days. There's also a
free, lite version of the app that has more limited functionality and only
works with up to 10 files that you can check out:
• Phone Drive FREE (limited to 10 files and other feature restrictions)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/phone-drive-free/id434342171?mt=8

I'd also like to remind people that the Prizmo app is still on sale for 50%
off ($4.99 vs. list price of $9.99) until September 6, in their
back-to-school sale. Up till now, this app has gone on sale relatively
infrequently. For students who received scanned PDF images of documents,
Prizmo will let you open and read such files attached to your mail, or
transferred or downloaded from a computer or web site, even if you are
using an iOS device with a poor or no camera (e.g. iPad, iPod Touch). And
it can be used to OCR text documents imaged with the device's camera,
although blind users may find this works best using a device like the
StandScan Pro to assist in holding your iPhone flat, steady, and the
correct distance from your document for a good OCR image. Prizmo also
supports OCR in multiple languages. If you transfer a lot of OCR'd files
back to your computer, Phone Drive can expedite the file organization,
naming, and transfer.

Here's the AppleVis directory link for Prizmo:
http://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/lifestyle/prizmo-scanning-ocr-and-speech

And here's the App Store links to the app:
• Prizmo - Scanning, OCR, and Speech (on sale for $4.99, regularly $9.99)
by Creaceed
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/prizmo-scanning-ocr-speech/id366791896?mt=8

HTH. Cheers,

Esrher

Re: replying and sending specific texts problem

2013-08-30 Thread bj colt
Hi Joeseph,

My wi fi is fully connected and my o2 subscription and data transfer is fine.
This is the only contact I have this problem with. A slight change to my
initial post. I was able to reply to one of my friends texts he sent me.

So the situation is that I cannot send texts to my friend from my iphone. I can
send everyone else in my contact list an text, no problem at all. Sometimes I
can send my friend a text but it is a hit or a miss. Yet I can reply to him
when he sends a text.

I have fully deleted his information and set it up again.

I am puzzled as to why I can reply to his text and not able to iniate the text
at all times?

Hope this makes sense.

Hello DJ, there is another one or two things going on here, you could not be
connected to the Internet which meaning your phone is in other GPRS mode or it
just doesn't see your Wi-Fi it depends on whether you use your cellular data
there and the UK. Or are you using your Wi-Fi, both of these things or one of

Sounds first strange, sounds like to meet with me need to make a telephone call
to Apple or do the following first backup your iPhone and iTunes and let's do a
complete restore and see if that works from there. If not make a call to Apple
or go to your local Apple store because I went down there couple weeks ago
because I was having an issue with battery and that was other people that were
having the same issue with text messages. And I might give you a new phone. But
I hope so I listed above fixes your problem.

replying and sending specific texts problem

2013-08-30 Thread bj colt
Hi List,

I am having difficulty in sending my friend text messages from my Iphone. I get
an error message saying send failure. Yet sometimes I can send a text no
problem at all. My friend ihas an iphone as well.

Has anyone any idea what the problem might be? I have deleted his full contact
details and set them up several times with no change in the situation.

Any help would be appreciated.

Live long and prosper, John

Hello DJ, there is another one or two things going on here, you could not be
connected to the Internet which meaning your phone is in other GPRS mode or
it just doesn't see your Wi-Fi it depends on whether you use your cellular
data there and the UK. Or are you using your Wi-Fi, both of these things or
one of these things needs to be on in order for your eye messages to come

Hi Joeseph,

A new twist to this problem is that I deleted my friends contact so I could
then add him when he texted me. I don't have his name in my contact list yet
his name is there but I can't seem to add him as a new contact. I clicked on
edit but no choice to add him.

It might well be a call to Apple or my phone company o2.

How to Reboot an IOS Device

2013-08-30 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Hi all,

Just curious, can one execute the equivalent of a reboot on an IOS device
such as iPod Touch 5th gen? I'd like to simulate the restart process found
in a Windows computer. I know I can press and hold the Sleep/Power button
for about 4 seconds and at the prompt double-tap the screen to shut down,
but I'm finding that I forget I completely shut the thing down. In other
words, I would like to find a way of using some sort of IOS process to shut
down then automatically restart my iPod.

Re: How to Reboot an IOS Device

2013-08-30 Thread Joseph FreeTech
For those who may know a bit more about the technical processes involved,
when pressing the sleep/power button and the Home button at the same time
for 10 seconds as Chris suggested, is this equivalent to a proper shutdown
and reboot, or is this the same as forcing a shut down by pressing and
holding the power button on a Windows computer? If this is an illegal
powering down of the iPod, this of course risks the stability of the OS.

Also, this process Chris suggested does not result in a restart of my iPod
Touch 5th gen with VoiceOver talking. At this point I have no sound and have
no idea what my iPod is doing. Guess I should have waited for more feedback
before taking action on the suggestion--especially since I know better. :)

Re: How to Reboot an IOS Device

2013-08-30 Thread Joseph FreeTech
HI all,

To answer Keith's question regarding the complete shutdown of VoiceOver if
one executes a hold of the Sleep/Power button and Home button for 10 seconds
for a shut down, this not only results in VoiceOver being disabled, it also
appears to reset VoiceOver back to factory defaults. I had to attach my
non-speaking iPod Touch 5th gen to my desktop and use iTunes Accessibility
to turn voiceover on once again. I'm still a bit P/O at myself for using
such poor judgment! I now have to add previous items back on the rotor and
hope I didn't trash parts of the operating system! I'll definitely be more
cautious in terms of how I follow advice next time!

There is no direct restart. If the device totally hangs, you can hold the power
and home buttons for about 10 seconds to force a reset. Otherwise, to restart,
you will need to shut down, then turn on the device again.

Thank you, You're a credible source, and I can obviously now confirm this

saved myself some unnecessary frustration. To be clear, the simultaneous

pressing and holding the power button to force a shut down on a Windows

Re: How to Reboot an IOS Device

2013-08-30 Thread Joanne Chua
pressing the home and sleep button is a way to reset the device. It is
different from pressing the sleep button alone, (sleep button alone) for
turning it off and turning back on again.
To turn off your device, press and hold sleep button for a few second, until
you hear voiceover anouncing something a long the line shudding down iphone,
slide right for ok or left for cancel.
After you have slide according to your option, voice over will either say
iphone is shudding down or you will back to wherever you were.

It might well be a call to Apple or my phone company o2.

Sounds first strange, sounds like to meet with me need to make a telephone
call to Apple or do the following first backup your iPhone and iTunes and
let's do a complete restore and see if that works from there. If not make a
call to Apple or go to your local Apple store because I went down there
couple weeks ago because I was having an issue with battery and that was
other people that were having the same issue with text messages. And I might
give you a new phone. But I hope so I listed above fixes your problem.

My wi fi is fully connected and my o2 subscription and data transfer is

So the situation is that I cannot send texts to my friend from my iphone. I
can send everyone else in my contact list an text, no problem at all.
Sometimes I can send my friend a text but it is a hit or a miss. Yet I can
reply to him when he sends a text.

I have fully deleted his information and set it up again.

I am puzzled as to why I can reply to his text and not able to iniate the

 Hope this makes sense.

Hello DJ, there is another one or two things going on here, you could not be
connected to the Internet which meaning your phone is in other GPRS mode or
it just doesn't see your Wi-Fi it depends on whether you use your cellular
data there and the UK. Or are you using your Wi-Fi, both of these things or
one of these things needs to be on in order for your eye messages to come
through and go out. The other thing is is that your Sellier signal could
either being too low or too much basically it overpowers the Internet. Now
is the name of US and I hope I've answered your questions and if not do not
 hesitate to write me back.

Re: How to Reboot an IOS Device

2013-08-30 Thread Joseph FreeTech
Does anyone know the technical processes that take place when one uses the
simultaneous press of the Sleep + Home button? I'd like to know if this is
what some deem an extreme measure similar to pressing and holding the power
button on a Windows machine, or if this is a safe practice on an IOS device.
Sorry to be so repetitive, but I'm looking for a credible answer and I keep
getting descriptions of what the process will do, processes which I have
already conveyed knowledge of. I've already found out it wipes out
VoiceOver, so I'm curious how the process effects other functions of the OS.

pressing the home and sleep button is a way to reset the device. It is
different from pressing the sleep button alone, (sleep button alone) for
turning it off and turning back on again.
To turn off your device, press and hold sleep button for a few second, until
you hear voiceover anouncing something a long the line shudding down
iphone, slide right for ok or left for cancel.
After you have slide according to your option, voice over will either say
iphone is shudding down or you will back to wherever you were.

There is no direct restart. If the device totally hangs, you can hold the
power and home buttons for about 10 seconds to force a reset. Otherwise,
 to
restart, you will need to shut down, then turn on the device again.

 Hi all,

Just curious, can one execute the equivalent of a reboot on an IOS device
such as iPod Touch 5th gen? I'd like to simulate the restart process

for about 4 seconds and at the prompt double-tap the screen to shut down,
but I'm finding that I forget I completely shut the thing down. In other

Re: How to Reboot an IOS Device

2013-08-30 Thread David Chittenden
Actually, pressing the sleep and home buttons simeltaneously for 10 seconds is
not the same as holding in the power button on a windows machine. Pressing the
sleep button six times in rapid succession is the same as holding the power
button on a windows machine as it crashes the iOS springboard. In fact, this
method only works when VO is turned on, and can damage your system.

Press and hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds is Apple's recommended
method for clearing out all the driver stacks and rebuilding them. This does
not happen when you turn the iOS device off then back on again.

Unfortunately, there is a very occasional bug in iOS which you experienced.
Sometimes, when press and hold power and home buttons for 10 seconds, VO resets
itself to factory default and deactivates. Nothing else is effected, and this
only happens very occasionally. My understanding, from several months ago, is
that Apple had not yet been able to reproduce this particular bug. When I
tested it with my older iPhone 4 by performing several hard resets in a row,
the bug occurred twice in 30 resets.

Having been a beta tester multiple times for different companies, I can state
that, no matter how much we believe bugs are easy to fix, until a bug occurs
reliably, it is extremely difficult to track down. Once it has been tracked
down, repairing it may not be a simple matter for many reasons, the strongest
in my mind is that, sometimes when a minor bug is fixed, the change causes very
major problems elsewhere.

All of this is to say, write an email to accessibil...@apple.com explaining
what happened so they will know that this particular bug is still very
occasionally present. Note: I have not experienced this bug since the last iOS
upgrade.
