Hey, that's an absolutely fantastic idea! And you could probably make it even
better by sewing it to fit over the entire unit like a shower cap, so nothing
gets dirty--not just the Braille cells. My sister- in-law sews; maybe I'll ask
her to whip me up some covers for my BrailleNote PK, BrailleSense Polaris, and
my Brailliant BI 32. Thanks for the awesome idea! HIMS used to make a cover
like that which you'd get with your BrailleSense, but they no longer make one
for the Polaris, which is a shame, considering how expensive these devices are.

Re: best braille display in general

2018-02-04 Thread Eric Oyen
the Braille Sense U2 has a removable battery pack. It's lithium Ion and those
things have a pretty long shelf life, but after 5 years, they are starting to
wear thin. I could also probably take the battery module over to Batteries Plus
and have them rebuild it. That will cost about $80 or so.

Re: best braille display in general

2018-02-04 Thread Eric Oyen
I use my braille sense with a silk cover over the unit. I can read the braille
through the silk. This does 2 things:
1. keeps the cells clean
2. keeps my fingers off the dots (no chance of them getting dirty).

The silk cover can be cleaned with woolite or even dawn dish soap. I have had
my sense U2 now for 5 years and all cells still work as new. :) I think I will
have to order a replacement battery though. the one that came with the unit
doesn't hold a charge nearly as long as it once did.

RE: best braille display in general

2018-02-04 Thread M. Taylor
Hello anouk,

You know, you just reminded me of something.

I suspect that one reason why I've had such good results with my Braille
display is because I always, always, always wash my hands thoroughly, paying
particular attention to the tips of my fingers, before touching the display. I
frequently wipe down the display with a damp cloth, as well. Further, I always
keep the surface of the display covered, when not in use.

I don't know about the newer models but the model that I have has a maintenance
mode in which you can have all of the pins raised, simultaneously, for easy
cleaning.

I think every display gets problems with its cells after a few years. They
either need to be cleaned or in worst case replaced. I have had my brailliant
for nearly 6 years now and it has been cleaned twice, no cells replaced and
the cells are still good. But because your fingers go over the display so
often, it needs to be cleaned after a few years to keep working properly.
Unfortunately it is not that easy to do on your own.

I like my brailliant bi 40 very much. I’ve had good luck with Humanware
customer service.

I also own a Braille Sense Plus which is still chugging along after ten years
of use. the only issue with it is the charging port where you have to jiggle
the cord to get it to make contact enough to actually charge. Unfortunately,
this display is too ancient to be sent in for fixing the charging port. for
feel in reading, I like the Hims display better then the brailliant, but the
brailliant works better with my i phone and computer. I use the hims for stand
alone book reading now and nothing else.

2018-02-04 Thread llumpkin
It’s “Braille me” and there is a “buy” link on their site. Though you’ll pay
over $100 for shipping from there and not get technical support though I’d
expect the company to stand behind their warrantee. They’re hoping for American
distributorship soon. I suspect National Braille Press might be a distributor
but I have no direct info on this. They are mentioned on the site.

The Vario Ultra is the braille display I have. After a few months, the Micro
USB port broke. After being repaired well enough, two dots have now stopped
working. No, I cannot recommend this display.

Where do you buy the brailleme display? Apparently, it is made in India? I can

Re: best braille display in general

2018-02-04 Thread Anouk Radix
I think every display gets problems with its cells after a few years. They
either need to be cleaned or in worst case replaced. I have had my brailliant
for nearly 6 years now and it has been cleaned twice, no cells replaced and
the cells are still good. But because your fingers go over the display so
often, it needs to be cleaned after a few years to keep working properly.
Unfortunately it is not that easy to do on your own.

Re: best braille display in general

2018-02-04 Thread Andy Baracco
I once owned a Refreshabraille 18 and sold it because I just had such a hard
time plugging the USB cable into the unit to charge. Even my wife, who is
sighted couldn't figure it out. When I asked APH about the design of that port,
I was told that they wanted to make it extra sturdy because don't you know that
blind people are always dropping things.

i enjoy using refreshabrialle 18 and vario ultra 20 which are produced by
baum. refreshabrailel 18 is great with battery longivity. vari ultra 20 is
great with keyboard sa to have chords instead of using space bar. gtreat. but
battery, yes. since it is also notetaker, too. both are good.

andrew, for orbit, i was told that orbit doesn't have joystick and doesn't
have cursor and doesn't have navigator buttons. is that true??? if not true, i
woudl take orbit as if ithey have navignavigator buttons, cursor, and joystick.
please explain to us. thank you!

i did share feedback with vfo groups colleagues, and they want to hear

Re: best braille display in general

2018-02-04 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Hi, thank you for this reply... I for many years, have not spent money on
products such as Braille Displays or Printers and other high priced devices.
Before I pull thetrigger on a nice Braille Display, I need to know that
what I choose, I will find that the money is well spent.
I am using the Orbit 20 and absolutely love it!! I read books and played a bit
with the remote I Os side of it. My only problem is, I just don’t have any
idea of the others besides the Vario Ultra 40 of which I had about an hour demo
with. $4,000 scared me especially that there was around $400.00 warranty. Too
much money for uncertainty. Again, thank you for your reply. Andy and Shubert

The Vario Ultra is the braille display I have. After a few months, the Micro
USB port broke. After being repaired well enough, two dots have now stopped
working. No, I cannot recommend this display.

Re: best braille display in general

2018-02-04 Thread Patti Johnson
Wow, That makes me wonder how truly durable any of them are. I've had
two Hims displays that afte only a couple years end up with problems,
my u2 now has dots that are not coming up well, makes reading
sometimes difficoult.
I am not paying to have it ifxed.
I can honestly think that my Braille Lite was the only display I ever
had that lasted a really long time without problems. Even my Pacmate
after a year or two started freezing up on me and t hat kind of thing.
I am using a pacmate display now, and so far it's fine, but the whole
pacmate itself had a lot of problems, for me.
