Re: Can a RAM slot bad?

2006-04-26 Thread Michael Parker
yes, and this is not an uncommon problem. Hopefully you've purchased applecare and can get this easily fixed. If not, I would look on their website for a recall. (I'm not sure if they issued one, but it is fairly common). The interesting thing though, is that this problem probably effects a

Re: Apple supports booting XP

2006-04-06 Thread Michael Parker
hmm.. The games bit is very true. And as a gamer it is of constant annoyance that only some of the best games are released on the mac. This is made more annoying by noticing that the apple stores are carrying more ipods than software these days. The only reprieve to this is hearing the windows

Re: Boot failure: grey circle with diagonal bar

2006-03-20 Thread Michael Parker
The symbol is a universal symbol for No in this case, it's telling you it can't boot. It sounds like you may need to either take it in to a repair shop or try to reinstall the OS. Some tools such as diskwarrior can usually get a system to boot if it's not. Also you can try booting into safe

Re: No working USB Ports on my ibook

2006-03-15 Thread Michael Parker
FYI, you can try this to see if this will fix the usb ports. hmm... I wonder if I could open up a repair shop and get $600 for this? I would reset the pram. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238 If that doesn't work I would try reseting the pmu. This problem is not unheard of

Re: iMac screen :-(

2006-03-11 Thread Michael Parker
I believe the lampshade has an adapter that you can hook up an external vga monitor. Although $900AUD doesn't sound like a horrible cost for fixing the 20 imac. If you ever wanted to sell it, I don't think you would get a buyer without a good screen (unless they wanted it for parts). Mike

Your much better to grab the original footage again if that is an option. Whenever you convert footage back and forth, you will loose out on some quality. If the original data has been erased then try this: I'm sending you a link to two wmv to mpeg converters. imovie should import mpeg with no

Re: Ports and the internet

James, I would suggest not running two interfaces at the same time for what your trying to do if you can avoid it. The reason is that someone is blocking the ports that your using on the lan for a reason. I'm guessing do to your email address that your at a university and they are limiting the

I live in the silicon valley and here, you can get internet access via library's, internet cafe's and most coffee shops. I imagine if your in some sort of suburb you should be fine, but if your crossing the country, you're going to be out of luck for at least some of the time. Mike ---

Re: Interesting desktop idea from Sun

2006-02-12 Thread Michael Parker
A 3d desktop, is an interesting concept, but SUN coming out with a pretty gui? Ok, I admit, i've been a bit sceptical of SUN's GUI design ever since around 1998-1999 when they came out with some new gui and totally confused the unix geeks for weeks. My prediction is that Windows will do 3d

Re: Opening .sitx files

2006-02-06 Thread Michael Parker
.sitx is stuffit's new format. It varies from the .sit format in that it is further compressed, making it an appealing format for those paying for the bandwidth that your using to download your files. What you probably need to do, is to download the free version of stuffit that supports the

Re: large screens for Macintosh

Hi Colin, I'm really not sure what that mac that your trying to use or the size and resolution of the monitor that your trying to use. Both would be usefull. What I can say is that if you have a new mac, you should have no problems displaying on any screen that I'm aware of. Even if you have

Hi Rod, I strongly doubt that a Non Disclosure Agreement has anything to do with this. I've signed a few from apple and they never give out information about non released products except to those who definately need it. I don't think a customer would qualify as needing to know new information

Re: Installing InDesign 2.0 on Intel iMac

2006-02-01 Thread Michael Parker
More than likely this is a permissions problem. Which is why it appears for some users probably with less access. So this would be a good starting point to check. If the permissions are fine, you can try the lower two workarounds. I've found that the first one is sometimes needed. If you

Re: The horrors of Ethernet cables

I've made my share of Ethernet cables, and my opinion that it varies on ease depending on cables and tools that you have. But to be sure, this is not easy the first time you do it, and you are likely to mess up many times initially. If you only need a few cables and they are set distances that

I think Ronda's suggestion will probably work. If not, you can try another approach which is to run a permissions repair. If that still doesn't work. download the combo update from apple.

Hi Lloyd, Usually with scanning, once you get the basic settings right, then you shouldn't need to spend alot of time enhancing each photo. My guess is that you are scanning a high resolution (perhaps in full color) and that is causing the delay in scanning. Typically, I scan at around 150 dpi
