Subject: [WISPA] Spectrum Analyzer Recommendation?

Hi all,

Was wondering if any of you have owned or used a spectrum analyzer for
common WISP frequencies like 3.3-3.8Ghz, 5Ghz, as well as 11, 18, 23,
and 24Ghz. I'm primarily interested in 3.3-3.8Ghz and the complete 5Ghz
range. Something that could analyze as low as 900Mhz and as high as the
60-80Ghz would be nice too, but not as important. I've tinkered with a
Bumblebee device before in 5Ghz, but wondered what analyzers you folks
would recommend.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Personally, I had terrible luck with my Spectran, but I am tired of
explaining my story every time this subject comes up. Maybe my
particular unit was a dud, but at any rate it was so inaccurate (as
verified by a calibrated RF signal generator) that I had to replace it.

Hi Guys,

I rented some gear from http://www.trs-rentelco.com/ about a year ago.
These guys were a HUGE help in figuring out a problem that had come and gone
for years (FM radio interference that was always worse in winter than
summer).

John called me a few days ago and said they had quite a bit of gear for
sale. If you are looking for an analyzer you might want to touch base with
him. I've cc'd him here.

laters,
marlon

Re: [WISPA] Spectrum Analyzer Recommendation?

2010-01-22 Thread jp
We've got an older HP (now agilent) spectrum analyzer that does up to
22ghz. Most people don't know how to use it. I had plenty of experience
with O-scopes, and obtained a manual for it, so I'm comfortable with it.
The average 25 year old geek would be lost after turning it on.

We occasionally drag it out and use a directional antenna to locate a
source of interference. Sees the cell phone, 900 paging, and some 900
unlicensed stuff real good. 5ghz is harder as the antennas are much more
directional.

For monitoring over a time period, Trango 900 SUs and Alvarion 900VL SUs
are great at spectrum analysis too via the CLI, as is the Alvarion FH
900 with the spectrum analysis firmware and windows utility. For 5ghz,
I'd recommend an Alvarion VL SU for the band you are testing.

No offense, but as also a BSEE, I offer that many people with
a degree still have no clue about test equipment or simple things like
soldering irons.

I recall all too clearly a young lady who had her BSEE doing an
internship with the FBI, who had no idea how those components
were actually connected together on a board.

Good point. Right after starting my first year of engineering school, I
literally had to teach one of my classmates how to use a phillips
screwdriver. This person didn't stick with engineering for long :)

I guess I'll just say that I know the difference between my RBW and VBW.

Re: [WISPA] Spectrum Analyzer Recommendation?

2010-01-22 Thread jp
During high school and college, I had a nice summer job repairing and
final testing some expensive government electronics. It used skills I
already had, rather than anything from college. The people involved in
building what I tested and fixed didn't have any electronics education.
They knew their resistor colors, knew diodes only went one way, and
could read the labels on chips. They were holdovers from the declining
minicomputer businesses, and they were one step away from being replaced
by a wave soldering machine if the production volume were a little
higher.

When I was in college 93-95 at a reputable engineering school, I had an
EE roommate and many friends in the department. They went from math to
breadboards to FPGAs, imaginary logic circuits, and VLSI. Nothing as
simple as actually building or repairing things; that's for hobby or
lower end jobs. It doesn't make for star researchers or big business
inventors.

I studied computer science. You could graduate without actually opening
a computer or assembling a network cable. You'd have to be able to
program the computer with a variety of languages and a variety of
methods and algorithms. You'd probably get a nice job managing a team of
programmers or a serious software project after graduation.

I dropped out and started an Internet business like many did during that
era.

Subject: [WISPA] spectrum analyzer

Well, I know we have been round and round this subject before, but, I am
finally ready to buy a spectrum analyzer

What I want

Coverage of 900MHz, 2.3-2.5GHz, and 5-6GHz
Absolute power readings... I don't really care what the range on the
power readings is as I can adjust the level as needed with attenuators
But, I wish to do repeatable testing and comparison of radio cards and
pigtails with the unit...
Portable I don't need, (but would not object), to a hand held unit,
but a big rack mount won't do me much good
Reasonable price 1K$ or so. Referb or recon is fine I'd
consider used from someone well known on wispa
Ext. antenna input

Ideas? Suggestions?

I remember some talking about hand-held units on here before. Any body
ever get one and use it?

Thanks

Re: [WISPA] spectrum analyzer

2006-12-12 Thread Mike Brownson
We've got one of our Avcom Rental units available for sale. We rent
these for $100 per week. This has been used on and off for the past
year and it's time to move it. It sells for $3K new, we need $1000 for
the analyzer. We have a 5Ghz freq extender as well for $400, normally
$800. Only thing needed is the 900MHz freq extender. So what we have
will do the 1.7-2.7GHz band plus 5-6GHz (with extender) for $1400.
Portable (not handheld) unit with large easy to read screen, markers,
memory and peak hold functions plus more. More info at
http://avcomofva.com/products/default.asp?page=psa1727b.

The order has already been placed for these units and they should be
arriving in the states shortly. I believe John ordered a few extras so if
anyone wanted to get one who missed out on the GP they still can. I think
he ordered 6080s with the memory expansion. I'm looking forward to trying
mine out.

ought to be worth it, especially for WISP use. I expect some clumsy
features and inconveniences, but I'm willing to live with that for the
price. With the group purchase we will save a couple hundred bucks. If
you're interested, get in touch with John (binary1000) quickly as he
will be placing orders soon.

With the extra ram for plotting, it is about $1000 US.

Is it as good piece of hardware for the price?

I recently purchased one of these...
On its maiden trip, the technician cracked the LCD screen...:(

I sent to Germany for repair and it is currently 'stuck' in customs where
they are trying to assess import duties on the unit for repair!

I really never got the chance to evaluate, but may be interested in a group
order also.

Please keep me in the loop as to the cost and when/where we should place our
order.

It may actually be cheaper for me to just purchase a replacement instead of
paying for the repair.

BTW - has anyone else used one of these that can provide a recommendation on
it?

Re: [WISPA] Spectrum Analyzer

2006-06-15 Thread Jack Unger

Cliff,

Your willingness to help the WISP community by evaluating two of these
units will (I'm sure) be appreciated. :)

Reviewer's Note: LCD screen easy to break.

We'll stay tuned for your report on how the unit actually works. Some
key features that I look for in a spectrum analyzer are:

1. Sensitivity - should go down far enough below the threshold of your
equipment to determine if noise is lurking within 10 dB or 15 dB below
the threshold.

2. Ability to save results as an easily-viewed file. For example, it's
nice to save sample data as a jpg.

3. Peak-hold feature is an absolute requirement.

4. External antenna jack needed for (hopefully obvious) use with a
directional antenna.

5. Lightweight is nice.

6. An internal attenuator is nice. Overload a spectrum analyzer and you
blow it out (Ouch - Another opportunity for permanent storage in the
German Customs Department).

7. A built-in battery is nice.

8. It should be WiMAX-ready, mesh-capable, and MIMO-enabled, with
dual-polarity, tree-penetrating power.

9. The ability to watch television on it while driving cross-country at
100 MPH is an absolute necessity. So is a turn-by-turn voice-navigation
feature. And, oh yeah, it should also download music, have a built-in
high-resolution digital camera, and a multiband, multimode cellphone.
Without all of these feature, what good is it really???

10. Last but not least - easy-to-use intuitive operation, backlit
keypad, long battery life, ergonomic shape to fit both small and large
hands, stylish customizable faceplates,

Tracks lost kids and dogs...

to the stage where one would come in handy I'm just beginning to look into

If I remember correctly from my SA repair and sales days, only the
extremely old HP 8569A's went to 1.5Ghz. You can get external mixers to
go up 40Ghz, but hardly relevant to WISP's. After a certain
revision(which you can hardly find the older ones) included an internal
mixer to go to about 1.5Ghz.

Those still look pretty old-school. Have you used the handhelds from RS,
the FSH 3GHz and 6GHz series or the handheld Anritsu(s). Same cost or less
to rent/buy and no upconverters required...

You probably want the one with ethernet. Then you can set one up and
remotely access it via laptop. (Useful for things like Scriv is fighting
with right now)

You'll need the frequency converters for your 5.8 gig band checks.

These are really really cool units. Wish I had one of them instead of my

RE: [WISPA] Spectrum Analyzer

2006-05-07 Thread Brian Webster
You can buy Canopy units and use the spectrum analyzer feature. That has the
drawback of the directivity of the antenna pattern but it's also able to be
run remotely. Install it with a TV antenna rotor and control all of it from
the ground from a laptop. For use in the unlicensed spectrum this is a cheap
way to have a spectrum analyzer that does what you need. I think you might
also be able to do the same thing with Trango gear.

Thank You,
Brian Webster
