Actually, I was able to get the stock shift knob off using a vice, instead of
having a car roll over the knob.  This doesn't work for everyone, but it did
work for the person I was helping ('94 G20t.)  Just another option if the car
method doesn't work for you.  My initial method is much simplier.  Get a big
strong guy and have him twist off the knob for ya.  It worked for me, but then
again, my car barely had over 300 miles at the time.  =)

Uh... I'm not everyone, I'm no one!  Anyway, my only guess to that would be
that since the short shifter starts out with a notchy feeling (not the case for
everyone), one would assume that it's harder to shift, and therefore causing
assumption of gear grind.  It was bad enough I had a few friends mention the
gear grind to me not too long after my short shifter was installed.  I had no
idea what crack they were smoking, but I sure wanted some (must have been all
those exhaust fumes from their H-cars.)
