Shouldn't be much of a problem at all. Most companies just don't want to deal with the support hassles. Example, iTunes isn't supposed to work on a machine that doesn't have built-in USB. It has no problems running on machines with NO USB though.
One thing, despite what may be written on the box, if you only have USB 1.1, you won't get more than 4-6x write speed from the drive.
