Hi Eric,

Thru your description you failed to mention the device used as the 
source material for the burn or what sort of data it is. If you are 
"duping" CDs or otherwise relying on the internal CD as a source, this 
could be the problem. I forget how fast that drive is, but I'm pretty 
sure it isn't very fast. Have you tried making a disk image to your hard 
drive and burning from there? I also suggest that you make this image 
from the USB burner, even if it is slow, because it is newer technology 
and is more likely to be able to be successful for a successful dupe. 
Some older CDs don't "rip" audio really well. Lastly, I'd turn off VM. 
It can do awful things to audio files.
