OS X is just too slow under a 604 processor. Even using an original G3, like
a 233 or 266, is a bit too painful for real everyday use. OS 9 is like
greased lightning compared to X under those conditions. Since there's some
considerable effort at getting X installed on an unsupported machine, no use
ending up with a dog slow X install, where you are constantly switching back
to OS 9 to get anything done.

I'd suggest a G3/300 or better upgrade card, and preferably one with a 1 mb
cache.
