Interesting. It sounds as if the list server can key off of something
else in the header, like "Sender" maybe, not just the "From" address
being in the subscriber list. Thanks, I'm learning a lot from you! I
know that newsgroups don't involve email, but the list does, and it's
those transition points in sending and receiving posts that are
confusing (at least to me).
There are two explicit headers:
X-Injected-Via-Gmane: http://gmane.org/
Original-Sender: news <[email protected]>
I would assume that <[email protected]> automatically is posted
without going through the moderator. Gmane only forwards the mail to
the list if they have already verified your email address. I receive
posts I make back from the list very quickly.
Right, there is no routing through the moderators for your posts. The
list server must look at more than the "From" address to decide whether
this is necessary, and I didn't know that. Definitely clarifies the
situation! Maybe the "Original Sender" is subscribed. That would allow
the list server to find a subscribed address without any special case
handling for interactions with Gmane (and other newsgroup managers), and
also allow Gmane to get its own copy, strip the trailer, and post to the
newsgroup.
Do you know what the mechanism is here? Does the list server know of
Gmane as a special case?
Gmane will receive the post at the same time it is sent to members of
the list. I do not know the exact mechanism. Gmane only carries
mailing lists that they have been requested to carry. If the owner of
the list does not want it carried, it isn't carried.
