Stuart,
If you use a "Hoppy" lighting isolator/controller, you could power the
trailer lights from a 12V battery. I think the Hoppy would be triggered
by the 6V lights OK, but I'm not sure how you'd charge the 12V battery.

The lights would be very dim if operated at half-voltage, and the
trailer wiring isn't probably heavy enough to handle the current that 6V
bulbs would require.

Frank,
I use a Hoppy lighting isolator in my truck to power the trailer's
lights. It has a "power" lead that picks up +12VDC from the battery, and
3 leads that are connected to the truck's lights (tail, LT, RT). The
"trigger" leads only cause the isolator to apply power to the output
leads, they don't supply much of any current themselves. I'd personally
bet that 6 volts would be enough to trigger the device.

The biggest problem is if the 6-volt system is positive ground, as many
were. That probably won't work with the Hoppy.

It could be done with relays; one VAC'er made up his own system that was
in the trailer, using 3 of them. He used the trailer battery to power
the trailer's lights, but of course it WAS being charged from his tow
vehicle. A big advantage was that it eliminated voltage drop from the
tow vehicle to the trailer, so his lights were noticably brighter.
Stuart could use relays with 6 volt coils (if he can find them) and the
polarity problem is solved, but he still would have to charge the
trailer's battery. Of course, if night-time towing is limited and he has
a good on-board charger, the battery might well hold up w/o constant
charging while on the road.

And then, he has the problem of finding a suitable brake controller and
6 volt magnets.....

The 6v equivalent of an 1157 is an 1154, it fits the standard dual
filament socket.

I would think that the wiring should be heavy enough for lights,
depending on the year of the airstream. I notice that newer model
anythings (80's up) tend to have thin wiring. The amp difference between
6 and 12 v is about double, so one 6v bulb is approximately equivalent
to 2-12v bulbs. Most older wiring was big enough to handle extra bulbs.

I can't think of any way short of a major electronics project to get a
12 brake system to run off 6v, EXCEPT that if you have a hydraulic
operated controller, you could add a power wire from the trailer battery
to the controller, then back to the brakes. It would take an extra plug
but would work if really have your heart set on this :-)

You could use the car to charge the trailer battery. There are also
voltage converters that change 6v to 12v but they aren't cheap or easy
to find. I have one for my firetruck to run a modern two-way radio. You
still have a problem if the Merc is positive ground, you would have to
reverse the polarity on your trailer.

Could it be a '59 or a '60 Pacer. Pacers were 16 feet I believe. RJ sayes
its 18 feet. Jill, try measuring it ball to bumper.

Only hitch in that scenario is that Pacers had a serial number of SS NNN in
'58, SS 9 NNN in '59, and SS 0 NNN in '60.

i agree whole-heartedly... and, for things like gauges, instrument panel lighting,
etc., there's a voltage divider thingy to supply the 6v current where needed... i
can't find the relevant info/description of the 'thingy', but someone will come up
with it
