In my situtation, yes, it's worth it.

1) I run my own internet based business and make more money when i'm online
for a few hours a day. It's also a tax deduction. I estimate being online
when we travel increases my income as $10 - 20 each day, over what it was
when i used a teathered phone and had less time online. At 3 days per
weekend and 2 weekends per month on the road, it more than pays for the
service.

2) my father in law had cancer and lived 8 hrs away - we made frequent trips
to see him before he died. Two kids live 8 hours away. Only one home of the
3 had interent (#2 has an open AP i use, but prefer providing my own
internet) I can use it both in the car as we travel and in the house when we
arrive. See #1 for why this is important.

3) I can stay online for a solid 3 1/2 hours as we drive up I81 in VA - from
just north north of Harrisonburg to whatever is 3 1/2 hours south. It's not
nearly as good on the trips to Toledo and Cleveland - i think i get maybe 30
min blocks, if i'm lucky - too much of WV and KY don't have national access
and verizon coverage in parts of KY and OH is spotty (i'm supposedly in NA
coverage areas but can't connect). Some parts of ohio have broadband access
- it's quite speedy. See # 1 :)

4) Because i'm paying for it, i can use it 24/7 - and not just nights and
weekends. This is important when we are in the car - i can make lots of
money while phil drives and it beats sleeping out of boredom.

5) i can talk and use the internet at the same time :) more importantly, i
can use the internet without dragging a tethered phone along or running down
the phone battery.

6) When i stay in hotels i don't need to pay $10 a day for internet (about
half the hotels i use never provide it free :()

7) from the 'ain't technology great' department - my kids call me when we
are traveling and ask me to look up things for them. My mother in law needed
some phone numbers to settle her husbands estate and phil had me look them
up for her as he drove home. of course this isn't enough to justify the
cost, but it is fun. :) Even my mom is getting into the act - she has stuff
she wants me to order for her every time we visit.

if you don't travel much and/or can put up with limited daytime use then a
cable for the phone is a good deal.
