Re: Recovery of lost info

Do you have an AUTO-SAVE set to save your work often -- such as every 10
minutes, every 3 paragraphs, every xxx ?? Your note suggests that part of
your doc was recovered. That says that your autosave setting (if even set
ON at all) is set for far too long an interval. Maurice

My first thought is that the 'dictionary' you are using is corrupt. Search
your system backups for the version you were using
before the upgrade and restore it. Because no one ever does back ups these
days the alternative would be to reinstall openoffice.

Any "coincidences" in the crashes? Like when using a particular sequence
or format? Any clues in the resulting display / file / messages?
Are you using any macros (especially "home-grown" macros)?
Have you asked a local friend to try the exact same text & routines (using
a different computer), to see if it's some curiosity about your text, or is
it a "David Carrol" anomaly?

Should the USA (and Canada & other countries) welcome them? We all have
long-standing provisions for LEGAL immigration. Is it enough?
Put yourself in their awful circumstance -- wouldn't you move heaven &

Good grief !!!

Cease adding acres of religious text to posts. If that means using a
separate (gmail?) acct just for blog posts, then BY ALL MEANS do that.

What you elect to send to OTHE recipients is, of course, your own affair.
But religion HAS NO PLACE in Apache OpenOffice (or any other blog) posts.

It's a colossal nuisance to have to wade through all that stuff, looking
for relevant blog material.

So please CEASE !!!

Re: RUDE

2018-04-30 Thread Maurice Howe
Beautifully put. And right on target.
Yes, "Open Source" products (like Apache OpenOffice) aren't for
everyone. Millions of AOO users (I doubt if anyone really knows how many)
dearly LOVE it. Part of that "love" is not paying anything except your own
initiative & talents in making it work for YOUR chores. That, and the joy
in knowing you're no longer pouring cash into Bill Gates bluejeans.
Spend a few minutes learning what AOO can do for YOU. And by all means,
contribute by helping others like yourself sort out the quirks for the
benefit of us all.

Avoid losing files

2016-11-25 Thread Maurice Howe
Lost a valuable info file? You only have to lose your royal ass once to be
cured. There's frequent backups, of course, but here's a simple way.
Rename a file being revised by including today's date in the filename,
such as "XYZ 2016-11-25". For multiple updates per day, add an alpha
suffix.
Never fail to rename a file when you change it.
The "downside" is using disk space but you can later delete older
versions.

Re: READ ONLY

2016-10-25 Thread Maurice Howe
Dealing with balky read-only files is quite simple. Just open the file to
view it, do "select all" (usually ctrl-A), copy it to the clipboard
(ctrl-C), open a new file using whatever file extension/file type applies,
do a paste (ctrl-V), then do "save as" with a new filename. Then you are
free to edit the new file any way you want.

It's a great product (although not a "product" in the usual sense). Brian

I've done lots of volunteer work over the years -- Rotary International

president and treasurer of a Rotary Club, officer and councilor for Mended

*More* people should volunteer. True -- Mended Hearts is a bit different

This whole "spellchk" & "delete profile" is utter nonsense. Surely,
SURELY!, AOO is smart enough to handle this with a simple macro. Maybe
even with a "tab" pointing to the macro.

This "*spellchk is busted*" mess has gone on long enough. Garden variety

such a macro, but I'll bet 60 or 100 (10,000?) other users/developers are.

Couldn't you simply OPEN and SAVE files under new names anywhere you'd like

Re: Euro Symbol...?

2016-02-29 Thread Maurice Howe
More about "usual" & "special" characters:

There are a lot of symbols available through using the ALT+ method, the
thing is that the codes you use depend on your system locale. The symbols
shown on this site have nothing to do with my locale. Perhaps the best way
to see what's available is to start the Character Map (Windows) application
(START > Programs > Accessories > Character Map) and see what's available.
Things become a little confused when you go above the 255th character; you
may need to experiment, but they are available by using ALT + n (i.e. a
five digit code). For instance, ALT + 12556 = ♀, ALT + 2556 = ³, ALT + 0255
= ÿ and so on.

If you Google "alt key codes", you'll find many other sources.

Re: Euro Symbol...?

2016-02-29 Thread Maurice Howe
Martin, you're using RoadRunner so I assume you're in the USA. If that's
so, I can help by snail-mailing a chart that gives the kybd codes for all
of the usual alphanumeric characters, plus €, ¥, æ, Ø, and a great many
other useful symbols. You simply use the ALT key with a 4-digit
numeric-pad combo (ALT-0128 for €).

Or, go to www.alt-codes.net for even more "ALT-n" symbols.

These codes may also works for other "national" kybds -- I don't know.

Email your postal address.

Re: [ PROPOSAL ] A new REVERSE string function for Spreadsheets

2016-01-15 Thread Maurice Howe
Oh, that's easy. The facility already exists -- No need to "add" a
feature. I often have lists of names that need sorting is various ways.
TABLES are the answer. It may be cumbersome to make a table from a list,
but it really pays off for applications like yours. Table elements are
usually separated with tabs but spaces work, as well. And it's easy to
convert a table to text when that's appropriate. Play around -- you'll
find a way that fits your need.

Exactly. We had a variant of the bug that occurred upon installation and
profile migration from version 3.x; that one was fixed. These, much more
limited from the numbers we see, other occurrences are even harder to
 track and diagnose.

add an option to reset the user profile from a toolbar.

That has been the favorite option so far, together with an option for
resetting the profile when one (un)installs the program. You will find
the full discussions on the dev list, but technically the complexity is
that you can't delete the profile from a running OpenOffice (so this
would have to be scheduled for the next restart and coding it becomes
more complex) and that you (un)install the program system-wide, but your
 profile is a per-user setting.

Andrea.

Hello Maurice - I've tried a few experiments to perform mail merge. I have

The instructions I found provide reference to using a text file or a
 spreadsheet as the data source.

 https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/How_Tos/Creating_Mail_Merge_Documents_From_Text/CSV_or_Spreadsheets

My suggestion would be copy the address table from the Word document into a
spreadsheet. (I tested copy from Word table into Calc spreadsheet and that
preserved the column and row layout.) Then use the spreadsheet as the data
 source.

This method worked in my tests.

(import at least) so should one have a PDF document, and require reading
without the Adobe product, the document, if not encrypted/protected, can be
imported to the ODF and saved, without having to use or read in huge

I have OO-4.1.0 on Xubuntu Linux. I just installed it, and when I started up
Writer, after a few seconds it presented me with a notification saying that
there was updates for an installed extension.
So I clicked on the button. After it found the extension update, I clicked
on the Install button. The first time this happened, it then presented me
with a list of installed browsers and asked me to select one. I clicked on
chrome, because I do have Chrome installed. It failed saying that it
couldn't find the default browser. Now, every time I try to rerun the
process, it doesn't present me with a list of installed browsers, it just
fails, saying again that it can't find the default browser.

So, I can't find where to change the default browser in Writer. Does anybody
know? I tried renaming the profile folder, that didn't work, it still
failed.

HeartBleed bug

2014-04-26 Thread Maurice Howe
According to MalwareBytes, Apache is very vulnerable to the HeartBleed bug.
Any truth in that? Here's what they say:

Cheers,
Maurice Howe

It is a bug in OPEN SSL. It affects version 1.0.1 through 1.0.1f
(inclusive), and it affects servers that run Apache and NGINX mostly. Open
SSL is used in a lot of things and the complete list of what is affected has
yet to be tabulated, so there's probably other stuff too. Apache and NGINX
are the most important ones to start with.

Thanks for your comments, Alan.

My problem with tables is evidently so rare that it's not worth pursuing.
It's easy to avoid the issue by sticking with AOO (odt), so it's no
biggie. I'm also using MS Word 2003. The failures occur with any
vanilla table (no cell formula, etc).

Let's just forget my problem; at least for now. Your time is better spent
on my pressing issues.

Thanks again.

 anything useful. Any ideas?

As for save and retrieve, if retrieving in AOO after building in AOO, I
couldn't say. I haven't encountered that problem. My questions for you would
be:
- is it one particular file or every file that has a table in it?
- is it any table or only tables that use a particular feature, eg, cell
borders, bullets within cells, cell formulas

If MS Office won't open the file my first impulse would be to forget about
it until the problem with AOO opening the file is resolved. Once the .doc
file can be built, saved and opened again in AOO then try opening with Word.
I expect it will open once AOO is also able to open it.

fyi - I built a simple test table in AOO 4.0.0 with four rows and four
columns, put values in each cell, autoformated the table using the default
autoformat style and saved it as an MS Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) file. Then
opened it in MS Word 2003. It opened with no problem. In Word I added
another table with the same number of rows and columns, applied one of
Word's auto formats and saved the file again. Then went back to AOO and it
opened no problem.

My version of Word is old (haven't used it routinely for quite a few years
now so haven't gone to the later versions). My lack of problems makes me
think you're encountering a problem with one of the following
- the particular file you're working with
- the MS Word version the file is being saved as
- a feature used in the table design

Each issue must be troubleshot to try and come to a solution.

If what you are asking about is the ability to translate a non-English

natively), there is some discussion about what can be used here:

option for automatic distance between words in a sentence such as this:
OpenOffice --- is-

Hyphens between words consider them points. I hope my question this time is

Everyone,

I have a server with centos 5.10 that has openoffice 3.1.1. I am trying to
use openoffice as a text editor trough a gui interface with various versions
of fedora. The fedora machines connect remotely via ssh -Y
util...@server.com through a konsole window. The problem that is
present occurs when two different users connect to the same account on the
server ie util...@server.com or if the same user connects twice to the
server using the same account and starts openoffice in both konsole panels.
When this occurs the temporary files that openoffice creates get corrupted
which causes both edits to fail.

Is there a way to cause openoffice to create different temporary files when
two or more users are opening files via openoffice on the same account on
the server. I did not want to be required to create different accounts on
the server for each remote user, and I would like the users to be able to
open more than one openoffice on the same account.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hmmm. McAfee's Stinger32 anti-malware pgm said that it was the FreeOCR.exe
ITSELF that was the sort of all the grief. I took Stinger's word for it,
and let Stinger delete the offending exe file.

Looks like my original inquire created quite a stir. Sorry to have taken so
many of you from more important tasks.

The comments on the cnet freeocr page indicate such infestation.

You could try Calibre, downloading only from http://calibre-ebook.com/
which will convert a PDF into text. Anything I have ever downloaded

As a general rule I suggest only to download from an application's own

I'm guessing, of course, but by don't answer

I opened that 32,000+ row Cornell file as an XLSX in 15 to 20 seconds. To
peek at it, I turn CELL WRAP on, and saw that some cells had massive amts of

 Hi Dick,

I can confirm the problem you report with AOO 4.0.0. But I then
tried with AOO 4.0.1, a newer version which should be officially
released soon. It was able to load that XLSX file. It was slow, but
it did fully open. When I saved it as an ODS file, OpenOffice's
native format, subsequent opens were much faster.

I can send you the ODS version if you want. Or you can try again
with AOO 4.0.1 once that releases.

 Regards,

@Rob -- what OS are you using, given Julian's comment on this as well.

Windows 7, 32-bit.

I tried 4.0.1., Linux-32, and well basically gave up at the (about)
 25% load status.

For me it stopped there as well. I took a phone call, and when I checked
again the document was open. Check your CPU and see if it is still showing
the soffice process as active.

-Rob

 I will try again.

RE: Alphabetizing when using a spread sheet as an index for parts storage.

2013-09-23 Thread Maurice Howe
I think all (most?) spreadsheet programs require that you select [highlight]
the entire range of data to be sorted (which may or may not be the whole
spreadsheet), then click DATA, then SORT, then tell it which major/
intermediate/ minor columns to use, then press ENTER. If you simply select
a column and do SORT, it will sort THAT column only, leaving the rest of the
data as was. (Why? Because that might actually be what you wanted to do.
In most cases, including yours, it isn't.) The same logic applies to
sorting TABLEs when using the TEXT part of OpenOffice.

Yes, you can give the range a name but it's so simple to do the above.

Subject: Alphabetizing when using a spread sheet as an index for parts
storage.

In using a spreadsheet , using two columns where the first column contains
the part description and the second column indicates where the part is to be
found alphabetizaation was tried..

This feature hasn't been used in quite some time. When activated the
alphabetizing is done using the SECOND column. This puts all the part
descriptions in chaos but the placement in alphabetical order.

To accomplish the alphabetization properly the parts list was cut and placed
in the second column behind the position the part is to be found.

It works and then the columns are then changed into proper placement and all
is well.

It's necessary to upgrade the spreadsheet because of constant additions and
removals.

What is the necessary procedure to get the alphabetization of the
spreadsheet based on the first column?

Thank you
